Non-native reptiles are often detrimental to native communities and ecosystems and can be extremely difficult to manage once established. Thus, there is considerable interest in predicting the likelihood of establishment of nonnative reptiles. We assessed three hypotheses describing possible factors contributing to the successful establishment of introduced reptiles in an effort to better identify potential invaders.

An Examination Of The Sources Of Resiliency Possessed By Teachers Of Students At-Risk Of Not Meeting Graduation Requirements, John H. Mayberry
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Teacher shortages exist in the fields of special education and alternative education, particularly for students who suffer from behavioral and emotional disorders. Significant attrition, high stress levels and burnout indicates organizational cultures may not provide support for teachers' resiliency. There are teachers who find a way to survive and even thrive in less desirable environments with limited support (Patterson et al, 2004). Resiliency attributes include a personal sense of competence, belonging and optimism (Bernshausen and Cunningham, 2001). The lack of qualified teachers willing to work in alternative educational settings threatens the quality of education that students with behavioral and emotional …
Prediction Of Discretization Error Using The Error Transport Equation, Don Roscoe Parsons Iii
Prediction Of Discretization Error Using The Error Transport Equation, Don Roscoe Parsons Iii
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Since its conception, computational fluid dynamics (CFD) has had a role to play in both the industrial and the academic realm. Due to the availability of relatively cheap computer resources, CFD is now playing an increasingly critical role in the industry compared to experiments. It is also becoming increasingly important for the CFD analyst to have an in-depth understanding of the error inherently present in numeric and mathematical models. At a minimum, CFD simulation results should be accompanied by some analysis of the error including some type of grid convergence study and an estimation of the corresponding numerical uncertainty.;Error estimation …

The high rate of civil commitment in West Virginia indicates that the bureau of mental health in the state has been inefficient and unproductive at facilitating the procedures of mental health system delivery, to the point that the two state hospitals of West Virginia are often at their full capacity and incapable of admitting any new cases. This inadequacy at managing psychiatric emergencies causes frequent diversion of civil committed patients from the state psychiatric hospitals to other community psychiatric units, and ultimately costs the state an un-budgeted {dollar}4 million annually.;The main objective of this research is to contribute to the …
The Application Of Electroanalytical Techniques To The Study Of Coating Systems, Kenneth James Croes
The Application Of Electroanalytical Techniques To The Study Of Coating Systems, Kenneth James Croes
Coatings and Polymeric Materials
Electroanalytical techniques are often employed to augment standard practices utilized to study and characterize coating performance on metal substrates, yielding information that is not provided by standard coating analysis methods. Electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) was utilized to study epoxy-amine coatings incorporating oligomers and monomers of phenylenediamine in the coating structure; these results were compared to unusual EIS results obtained in previous studies of organic-inorganic hybrid sol-gel coatings attributed to the sol-gel structure. With a different coating structure, the unusual results were replicated in coatings containing phenylenediamine oligomers but not monomer. The results suggested the oligomers caused the coatings to act …

Electrochemical Investigation Of Powder Coatings And Their Application To Magnesium-Rich Primers For Corrosion Protection, Casey Roy Orgon
Coatings and Polymeric Materials
Corrosion is the decomposition of metal and metal alloys which threatens the integrity of manmade structures. One of the more efficient methods of delaying the corrosion process in metals is by coatings. In this work, the durability of two polyester powder coatings were investigated for corrosion protection of AA-2024-T3. Polyester powder coatings crosslinked by either triglycidyl isocyanurate (TGIC) or β-hydroxyalkyl amide (HAA) compounds were prepared and investigated for barrier protection of metal substrates by electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS). Polyester-TGIC coatings were found to provide better long-term protection, which can be attributed to the increased mechanical strength and higher concentration of …

Quantitative Assessment Of The Discrimination Potential Of Class And Randomly Acquired Characteristics For Crime Scene Quality Shoeprints, Nicole Richetelli
Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Footwear evidence has tremendous forensic value; it can focus a criminal investigation, link suspects to scenes, help reconstruct a series of events, or otherwise provide information vital to the successful resolution of a case. When considering the specific utility of a linkage, the strength of the connection between the source footwear and an impression left at the scene of a crime varies with the known rarity of the shoeprint itself, which is a function of the class characteristics, as well as the complexity, clarity, and quality of randomly acquired characteristics (RACs) available for analysis. To help elucidate the discrimination potential …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
The predicted increase in Spanish speakers within the United States brings to light a new direction for preschool curricula. There are multiple, on-going arguments about the best time for children to learn a second language and what role critical periods for brain development play in second language acquisition. Although there are individual differences in development, the current study demonstrates that children can learn Spanish vocabulary words with an average of 30 minutes of instruction per week. Using a combination of direct instruction with developmentally appropriate practices, hands-on, and engaging activities, the teaching of Spanish vocabulary, themed and age appropriate for …

Addressing Off-Nominal Behaviors In Requirements For Embedded Systems, Daniel Aceituna
Addressing Off-Nominal Behaviors In Requirements For Embedded Systems, Daniel Aceituna
Computer Science
System requirements are typically specified on the assumption that the system's operating environment will behave in what is considered to be an expected and nominal manner. When gathering requirements, one concern is whether the requirements are too ambiguous to account for every possible, unintended, Off-Nominal Behavior (ONB) that the operating environment can create, which results in an undesired system state. In this dissertation, we present two automated approaches which can expose, within a set of embedded requirements, whether an ONB can result in an undesired system state. Both approaches employ a modeling technique developed as part of this dissertation called …
Sliding Window Based Technique To Obtain Correlation Between Field Variables, Harshada Chandrakant Chavan
Sliding Window Based Technique To Obtain Correlation Between Field Variables, Harshada Chandrakant Chavan
Computer Science
In agriculture, finding correlation between field variables such as yield, NDVI, etc. is a classic problem. The most popular solution for finding correlation is to use regression analysis over complete field. In a field, there are numerous soil variables such as soil composition, water content, etc. that affect the correlation and it is not always possible to consider such factors in regression model. These factors adversely affect the accuracy of the correlation model. We demonstrate that it is incomplete and inaccurate to represent such correlation using single regression model for the complete field. We propose a novel technique- Sliding Window …

Region Based Data Mining On Agriculture Data, Babitha Battu
Computer Science
Spatial Data Mining is the process of discovering interesting and previously unknown, but potentially useful patterns from large spatial databases. Most relationships in spatial datasets are regional and there is a great need for regional regression methods that derive regional reflects different spatial characteristics of different regions. A central challenge in spatial data mining is the efficiency of spatial data mining algorithms, due to the often huge amount of spatial data and the complexity of spatial data types and spatial accessing methods. This paper proposes a regional regression technique for regions that are defined by a categorical attribute, in particular …

Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Problem Reports (ETD)
Two objectives for the catalytic reforming of hydrocarbons to produce synthesis gas are investigated herein: (1) the effect of oxygen-conducting supports with partially substituted mixed-metal oxide catalysts, and (2) a segmented bed approach using different catalyst configurations. Excess carbon deposition was the primary cause of catalyst deactivation, and was the focus of the experiments for both objectives. The formation and characterization of deposited carbon was examined after reaction for one of the selected catalysts to determine the quantity and location of the carbon on the catalyst surface leading to deactivation.;A nickel-substituted barium hexaaluminate (BNHA), with the formula BaAl 11.6Ni0.4O18.8, and …
A Data Mining Approach For Identifying Pavement Distress Signatures, Megan Sue Bouret
A Data Mining Approach For Identifying Pavement Distress Signatures, Megan Sue Bouret
Computer Science
This work introduces signature-based data mining of pavement distress data. The goal is to understand the factors that influence pavement distress. The presented approach maintains multiple types of flexible pavement distress scores throughout the analysis and considers them as signatures. The signatures are used to establish the relationship between distress score increases and overweight truck characteristics. Hierarchical clustering of pavement distress signatures provides insights into similarities among road segments. The use of signatures, rather than composite distress scores, is consistent with a data mining approach to the pavement distress problem. One set of experiments showed a relationship between the discovered …

Science education reform documents call for instructional practices that include scientific equipment and materials. Often, these types of resources are inaccessible for schools, especially those which are rural and socio-economically challenged, due largely to budgetary considerations. Science outreach partnerships are able to bridge the gap between what is called for in science education reform documents and the realities of many schools. Science in Motion is a science outreach partnership project located in rural Northwestern Pennsylvania, supported by state funds, that provides equipment, curricular materials, and professional development free of charge for area science educators. Teacher participation in this project is …
A Map Reduce Approach Of K-Means++ Algorithm With Initial Equidistant Centers, Krittika Bhattacharyya
A Map Reduce Approach Of K-Means++ Algorithm With Initial Equidistant Centers, Krittika Bhattacharyya
Computer Science
Data clustering has been received considerable attention in many applications, such as data mining, document retrieval, image segmentation and pattern classification. The enlarging volumes of information emerging by the progress of technology, makes clustering of very large scale of data a challenging task. In order to deal with the problem, many researchers try to design efficient parallel clustering algorithms. In this paper, we propose a parallel k-means++ clustering algorithm based on MapReduce, which is simple like traditional K-means, yet more powerful because the initial centroid selection process is not random. It follows a formula to plot initial centroids at equal …
