The Importance Of Supersaturated Silica Deposition For Base-Metalau-Ag Mineralisation In Western Turkey, Gülcan Bozkaya, David A. Banks Jan 2015

The Importance Of Supersaturated Silica Deposition For Base-Metalau-Ag Mineralisation In Western Turkey, Gülcan Bozkaya, David A. Banks

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

In the Arapuçandere LS-IS epithermal deposit in western Turkey, either well crystallised euhedral quartz or milky amorphous silica occurrences are associated with the precious and base-metal mineralisation. This study has determined the relative importance of the processes precipitating both of these in relation to the deposition of the ore. Analysis by LA-ICPMS of euhedral quartz and amorphous silica show that the latter is associated with much higher metal concentrations and suggests that the process responsible is more important for deposition of ore in the deposit. Mineralisation at Kumarlar and Koru may be similar. Slow cooling precipitates euhedral quartz and some …

The Effects Of Bedding Directions On Abrasion Resistance In Travertine Rocks, Mehmedi̇ Vehbi̇ Gökçe Jan 2015

The Effects Of Bedding Directions On Abrasion Resistance In Travertine Rocks, Mehmedi̇ Vehbi̇ Gökçe

Turkish Journal of Earth Sciences

Travertine rocks are currently used in various architectural applications, cut perpendicular or parallel to bedding planes. Travertine stones used without enough attention paid to the cutting directions easily wear off in locations where pedestrian traffic is heavy and can cause some unexpected complications in practice. This study was conducted to elucidate the effects of cutting directions on the abrasion resistance of travertine stones. Travertine blocks were cut perpendicular and parallel to bedding planes, and their abrasion resistances were determined by means of the Böhme abrasion loss test. Travertine blocks were chosen from 6 different quarries whose products are currently in …

Structures Of Crosslinked Networks, Malia Zee Jan 2015

Structures Of Crosslinked Networks, Malia Zee

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

Two independent sets of studies are conducted on two collections of thermoset coatings, each exploring the molecular-level structures of its subject materials. The first work searches for the sources of durability in a library of paint film samples, prepared using linseed oil and inorganic pigments 1-2 decades before analysis. The second inquiry examines a series of end-linked polymer networks, created using different monomer architectures through molecular dynamics. Investigations proceed by drawing connections between the materials’ local structures and their large-scale properties: for oil paint, guided by questions of whether metal carboxylates are responsible for the films’ cohesion, and if so, …

Synthesis, Characterization, And Applications Of Electroactive Polymeric Nanostructures For Organic Coatings, Abhijit Jagnnath Suryawanshi

Coatings and Polymeric Materials

Electroactive polymers (EAP) such as polypyrrole (PPy) and polyaniline (PANI) are being explored intensively in the scientific community. Nanostructures of EAPs have low dimensions and high surface area enabling them to be considered for various useful applications. These applications are in several fields including corrosion inhibition, capacitors, artificial muscles, solar cells, polymer light emitting diodes, and energy storage devices. Nanostructures of EAPs have been synthesized in different morphologies such as nanowires, nanorods, nanotubes, nanospheres, and nanocapsules. This variety in morphology is traditionally achieved using soft templates, such as surfactant micelles, or hard templates, such as anodized aluminum oxide (AAO). Templates …

Power Efficient Embedded Memory Design For Mobile Video Applications, Xin Wang Jan 2015

Power Efficient Embedded Memory Design For Mobile Video Applications, Xin Wang

Electrical and Computer Engineering

This thesis mainly addresses the issue of low-power technology for streaming media applications. In order to ensure high output video quality under low-voltage supply, the proposed 8-bit pixel memory is sized by different bit positions. A novel MSEpixel estimation method is then developed according to bit failure rates to directly evaluate the video quality for every 8-bit sizing combination. Based on this estimation, one area-priory and one quality-priority mobile video applications are proposed by SPIDER algorithms. The results show that both luma and chroma data should be considered. More than 70% power is saved in memory units by using sizing-priority …

Characterization Of A Structure Consisting Of Magnetostatic Responsive Microscopic Particles And Its Applications In Antennas, Adnan Iftikhar Jan 2015

Characterization Of A Structure Consisting Of Magnetostatic Responsive Microscopic Particles And Its Applications In Antennas, Adnan Iftikhar

Electrical and Computer Engineering

Wireless communication systems often require that a single antenna work at different frequencies. Thus the recon gurable antennas are useful in frequency agile environments to receive a signal over multiple bands. Research on antenna recon gurability using mechanical systems and radio frequency (RF) switches have been implemented in the past years. One problem for these voltage- controlled switches is that they require direct current (DC) bias control lines for operation. The incorporation of DC biasing circuitry also limits designers to explore the recon gurable capacity of many antennas. The DC bias control lines can possibly degrade the antenna performance. Moreover, …

Implications Of Translation: Examining English Word Patterns In A First-Year Spanish University Textbook, Alyssa Renae Miller Jan 2015

Implications Of Translation: Examining English Word Patterns In A First-Year Spanish University Textbook, Alyssa Renae Miller

English

In this study, I examined Vistas, a first-year Spanish university textbook, for its use of Greco-Latinate and Anglo-Saxon words as English translations. Using David Corson’s work as a starting point, I analyzed a foreign language textbook, expanding upon his list of texts organized by their percentage of Greco-Latinate words. By analyzing this one textbook, I hoped to inspire others to question the language preferences being instilled in students. My results indicated a nearly equal distribution of Greco-Latinate and Anglo-Saxon words, but the textbook authors rarely supplied multiple translations with both Greco-Latinate and Anglo-Saxon options. This initial study suggests a move …

Hydroxyl Number Determination Of Dendritic Polyols Utilizing Nir Spectroscopy, Seth Stacey Jan 2015

Hydroxyl Number Determination Of Dendritic Polyols Utilizing Nir Spectroscopy, Seth Stacey

Honors Theses

The goal of this project was to investigate the use of NIR-spectroscopy to quantify the number of OH functional groups attached to poly(amido amine) or PAMAM dendrimers in a manner that is quick, cost effective and easily reproducible. Obtaining the approximate number of hydroxyl functional groups (OH#) in a dendrimer is crucial in determining what role it can play in bonding and reactivity to other molecules. NIR-spectroscopy has the potential to allow for the recovery of the sample or at least to minimize the amount needed for analysis while providing an accurate determination of the OH# of a dendrimer.

Taking Back Migrants: A Theoretical Investigation On The Low Propensity Of Entrepreneurship In Ofw-Dependent Households, Carlo Anton G. Arguelles Jan 2015

Taking Back Migrants: A Theoretical Investigation On The Low Propensity Of Entrepreneurship In Ofw-Dependent Households, Carlo Anton G. Arguelles

Angelo King Institute for Economic and Business Studies (AKI)

In light of different Philippine economic issues, it can be said that this country is evolving and is constant at the same time. This evolution and consistency are present in the opportunity-seeking behavior of Filipino households. One aspect of change is the higher engagement of households in entrepreneurship as reported by GEM (2014a). Data on entrepreneurship presents the Philippines with an early-stage entrepreneurship (TEA) rate of 18.4%. GEM (2014b) stated that this rate is higher than the average start up rates of Asia and Oceania (13%); which implies that Filipino households, relative to their counterparts in these regions, are more …

This paper describes a software tool to assist groups of people in the classification and identification of real world objects called the Classification, Identification, and Retrieval-based Collaborative Learning Environment (CIRCLE). A thorough literature review identified current pedagogical theories that were synthesized into a series of five tasks: gathering, elaboration, classification, identification, and reinforcement through game play. This approach is detailed as part of an included peer reviewed paper. Motivation is increased through the use of formative and summative gamification; getting points completing important portions of the tasks and playing retrieval learning based games, respectively, which is also included as a …

Development Of A Hydraulic Component Leakage Detecting System Using Pressure Decay Signal, Xuanju Shang Jan 2015

Development Of A Hydraulic Component Leakage Detecting System Using Pressure Decay Signal, Xuanju Shang

Dissertations and Theses @ UNI

It is preferable to detect leakage at the earliest phase in the manufacturing process, and then further assembly of hydraulic components with leakage problems can be avoided. Integrating a USB based microcontroller and a pressure sensor; this study developed a hydraulic leakage detection system in using air instead of hydraulic oil as medium, through measuring pressure decay signals captured by a real time data acquisition system. Compared with the conventional hydraulic system using oils, this system shows advantages in safety operation and little environmental concerns due to use a lower pressure clean air.

The low-cost hydraulic leakage detection system was …

Second Hamiltonian Cycles In Claw-Free Graphs, Hossein Esfandiari, Colton Magnant, Pouria Salehi Nowbandegani, Shirdareh Haghighi Jan 2015

Second Hamiltonian Cycles In Claw-Free Graphs, Hossein Esfandiari, Colton Magnant, Pouria Salehi Nowbandegani, Shirdareh Haghighi

Theory & Applications of Graphs

Sheehan conjectured in 1975 that every Hamiltonian regular simple graph of even degree at least four contains a second Hamiltonian cycle. We prove that most claw-free Hamiltonian graphs with minimum degree at least 3 have a second Hamiltonian cycle and describe the structure of those graphs not covered by our result. By this result, we show that Sheehan’s conjecture holds for claw-free graphs whose order is not divisible by 6. In addition, we believe that the structure that we introduce can be useful for further studies on claw-free graphs.

Bounds For The Zero Forcing Number Of Graphs With Large Girth, Randy Davila, Franklin Kenter Jan 2015

Bounds For The Zero Forcing Number Of Graphs With Large Girth, Randy Davila, Franklin Kenter

Theory & Applications of Graphs

The zero-forcing number, Ζ(G) is an upper bound for the maximum nullity of all symmetric matrices with a sparsity pattern described by the graph. A simple lower bound is δ ≤ Ζ(G) where δ is the minimum degree. An improvement of this bound is provided in the case that G has girth of at least 5. In particular, it is shown that 2δ − 2 ≤ Ζ(G) for graphs with girth of at least 5; this can be further improved when G has a small cut set. Lastly, a conjecture is made regarding a lower bound for Ζ(G) as a …

Connection And Separation In Hypergraphs, Mohammad A. Bahmanian, Mateja Sajna

Theory & Applications of Graphs

In this paper we study various fundamental connectivity properties of hypergraphs from a graph-theoretic perspective, with the emphasis on cut edges, cut vertices, and blocks. We prove a number of new results involving these concepts. In particular, we describe the exact relationship between the block decomposition of a hypergraph and the block decomposition of its incidence graph.

Multi-Component Characterization Of Strain Rate Sensitivity In Pharmaceutical Materials, Jeffrey Michael Katz Jan 2015

Multi-Component Characterization Of Strain Rate Sensitivity In Pharmaceutical Materials, Jeffrey Michael Katz

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Powder particles are brought into very close proximity by any number of sequential or concurrent consolidation mechanisms during tableting. It is commonly accepted that plastically deforming materials tend to be more strain rate sensitive than brittle materials, but this sensitivity depends on how fast the material can respond to applied stresses. In addition, since many pharmaceutical materials also demonstrate relatively large amounts of elastic deformation, it can be difficult to identify whether a material's strain rate sensitivity is due to changes in elasticity or due to changes in plasticity at different speeds.

Compaction research is often performed on bench-top or …

Safety Culture Monitoring: A Management Approach For Assessing Nuclear Safety Culture Health Performance Utilizing Multiple-Criteria Decision Analysis, James Harold Warren Jr. Jan 2015

Safety Culture Monitoring: A Management Approach For Assessing Nuclear Safety Culture Health Performance Utilizing Multiple-Criteria Decision Analysis, James Harold Warren Jr.

Engineering Management & Systems Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Nuclear power plants are among the most technologically complex of all energy facilities. This complexity reflects the precision needed in design, maintenance and operations to harness the energy of the atom safely, reliably and economically. Nuclear energy thus requires consistent, high levels of organizational performance by the highly skilled professionals who operate and maintain nuclear power plants (Nuclear Energy Institute [NEI], 2014, p. 1).

A key element for achieving consistent, high levels of performance in a nuclear organization is its safety culture. Nuclear safety culture is for an organization what character and personality is for an individual: a feature that …

Scheduling N Burgers For A K-Burger Grill: Chromatic Numbers With Restrictions, Peter Johnson, Xiaoya Zha Jan 2015

Scheduling N Burgers For A K-Burger Grill: Chromatic Numbers With Restrictions, Peter Johnson, Xiaoya Zha

Theory & Applications of Graphs

The chromatic number has a well-known interpretation in the area of scheduling. If the vertices of a finite, simple graph are committees, and adjacency of two committees indicates that they must never be in session simultaneously, then the chromatic number of the graph is the smallest number of hours during which the committees/vertices of the graph may all have properly scheduled meetings of one continuous hour each. Slivnik [3] showed that the fractional chromatic number can be similarly characterized. In that characterization, the meetings are allowed to be broken into a finite number of disjoint intervals. Here we consider chromatic …

Path-Tables Of Trees: A Survey And Some New Results, Kevin Asciak Jan 2015

Path-Tables Of Trees: A Survey And Some New Results, Kevin Asciak

Theory & Applications of Graphs

The (vertex) path-table of a tree Τ contains quantitative information about the paths in Τ. The entry (i,j) of this table gives the number of paths of length j passing through vertex vi. The path-table is a slight variation of the notion of path layer matrix. In this survey we review some work done on the vertex path-table of a tree and also introduce the edge path-table. We show that in general, any type of path-table of a tree Τ does not determine Τ uniquely. We shall show that in trees, the number of paths passing through …

Critical Pragmatism: Peirce And Marcuse On The Socio-Political Influences On Human Development In Advanced Industrial Societies, Clancy Smith Jan 2015

Critical Pragmatism: Peirce And Marcuse On The Socio-Political Influences On Human Development In Advanced Industrial Societies, Clancy Smith

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

My dissertation brings together representatives from two otherwise antagonistic traditions: Charles Peirce of the pragmatists and Herbert Marcuse of the critical theorists. I demonstrate the affinities between the two philosophers with a focus on their contributions to socio-political thought in advanced industrial societies. After addressing the antagonisms between the two traditions I offer a reading that allows for a Peircean complement to Marcuse's One-Dimensional Man and a Marcusean complement to Peirce's critique of the "method of authority" in his seminal essay, "The Fixation of Belief."

Comparison Between The Asset Ez4 Nco And Impinger Sampling Devices For Aerosol Sampling Of 4,4′-Methylene Diphenyl Diisocyanate In Spray Foam Application, Silvia Puscasu, Simon Aubin, Yves Cloutier, Philippe Sarazin, Huu Van Tra, Sébastien Gagné

Études primaires

4,4′-methylene diphenyl diisocyanate (MDI) aerosol exposure evaluation in spray foam insulation application is known to be a challenge. Current available techniques are either not user-friendly or are inaccurate or are not validated for this application. A new sampler has recently been developed to address the user-friendliness issues with other samplers: the ASSET EZ4-NCO, but the use of this sampler in spray foam insulation applications has not been demonstrated or validated. Because of this, the current work was undertaken to provide a comparison of the ASSET sampler with an impinger method, considered to be the best available method in the context …

Determination Of Triglycidyl Isocyanurate From Air Samples By Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography Coupled With Coordination Ion Spray Mass Spectrometry, Sébastien Gagné, Marielle Carrier, Simon Aubin Jan 2015

Determination Of Triglycidyl Isocyanurate From Air Samples By Ultra-Performance Liquid Chromatography Coupled With Coordination Ion Spray Mass Spectrometry, Sébastien Gagné, Marielle Carrier, Simon Aubin

Études primaires

Rationale

Ultra-performance liquid chromatography (UPLC) coupled with coordination ion spray tandem mass spectrometry was used for the analysis of air samples containing triglycidyl isocyanurate. The method is not affected by any chromatographic interference and the filter extract is compatible with the UPLC system, as opposed to approaches using high-performance liquid chromatography coupled with ultraviolet detection and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry.

Methods

Accu-cap™ filters that had sampled triglycidyl isocyanurate were extracted using a mixture of acetonitrile/acetone (95/5) diluted with 3 volumes of water and were then analyzed. The mass spectrometry method uses sodium as the alkali adduct complexing …

Educational Pathways Of Teachers And The Effects On Students' Performance On High-Stakes Testing In Texas, Patrizia Antoinette Grigsby Jan 2015

Educational Pathways Of Teachers And The Effects On Students' Performance On High-Stakes Testing In Texas, Patrizia Antoinette Grigsby

Educational Leadership & Workforce Development Theses & Dissertations

Meeting the needs of placing "highly-qualified teachers" in the classroom is becoming more challenging every year. One option that many states are using involves certifying potential teaching candidates through alternative pathways, which differs from traditional certification programs. In this study, teacher certification routes were examined to determine if there is a difference in student performance on state standardized tests based on the teacher certification routes. This study compared student test scores of traditionally-certified teachers with test scores from students of alternatively-certified teachers on the State of Texas Assessments of Academic Readiness (STAAR) during the 2011-2012 administration of the test. The …

Uncertainty Estimates And Prediction Interval Development For Internal Strain Gage Balance Calibration Systems, Kenneth G. Toro Jan 2015

Uncertainty Estimates And Prediction Interval Development For Internal Strain Gage Balance Calibration Systems, Kenneth G. Toro

Mechanical & Aerospace Engineering Theses & Dissertations

Currently, there is a lack of the use of mathematically rigorous methods to evaluate the performance of multivariate force measurement systems. The specific problem addressed in the research stems from the practical issues faced by test engineers when wind tunnel models with internal strain gage balances are readied for test. Check loads are applied and the question that needs to be answered is whether or not the balance is reading within acceptable limits. These systems tend to be difficult to characterize uncertainty, primarily due to their multivariate nature, but also due to the desire for an estimate on the explanatory …

Multi-Surface Simplex Spine Segmentation For Spine Surgery Simulation And Planning, Rabia Haq Jan 2015
