Identification Protocols In Cryptography, Michael O’Donnell Nov 2015

Identification Protocols In Cryptography, Michael O’Donnell

The ITB Journal

In this paper we examine the role of Identification Protocols in the field of Cryptography. Firstly, the rationale behind the need for Identification Protocols is discussed. Secondly, we examine, in detail, challenge-response protocols, based upon zero-knowledge proofs, that form a subset of Identification Protocols in general. Thirdly, the mathematical tools necessary for the understanding of how these protocols work is given. Finally, we discuss four main Identification Protocols: Fiat-Shamir, Feige-Fiat-Shamir, Schnorr and Guillou- Quisquater. This discussion includes the theory, practical examples and the security aspects of each protocol.

Mental Spaces: Processes For Establishing And Linking Spaces, Brian Nolan Nov 2015

Mental Spaces: Processes For Establishing And Linking Spaces, Brian Nolan

The ITB Journal

This paper reviews the theory of mental spaces as expounded by Fauconnier (1994). In this work he posits a theory in which reference has a structural dimension. Within the theory, this structure is represented using spaces, connectors across the spaces and some general principles that are found to apply. The complexity lies in the interaction between the principles and in the contextual structures that feed into the principles for interpretation. Brugman, in her 1996 paper, makes use of insights from mental spaces theory to conduct an analysis of HAVE-constructions. She notes that Fauconnier has “elaborated a theory of partial possible …

Secure Data Aggregation For Sensor Networks In The Presence Of Collusion Attack Using Local Outlier Factor, Anes Yessembayev Nov 2015

Secure Data Aggregation For Sensor Networks In The Presence Of Collusion Attack Using Local Outlier Factor, Anes Yessembayev

Open Access Theses

Aggregation of data from multiple sensor nodes is usually done by simple methods such as averaging or, more sophisticated, iterative filtering methods. However, such aggregation methods are highly vulnerable to malicious attacks. In this work, algorithms that remove false readings before estimating of true values are developed and evaluated. For detection of false readings local outlier factor (LOF) technique is used.

Convergence Properties Of The Randomized Extended Gauss-Seidel And Kaczmarz Methods, Anna Ma, Deanna Needell, Aaditya Ramdas Nov 2015

Convergence Properties Of The Randomized Extended Gauss-Seidel And Kaczmarz Methods, Anna Ma, Deanna Needell, Aaditya Ramdas

CMC Faculty Publications and Research

The Kaczmarz and Gauss-Seidel methods both solve a linear system Xβ=y by iteratively refining the solution estimate. Recent interest in these methods has been sparked by a proof of Strohmer and Vershynin which shows the randomized Kaczmarz method converges linearly in expectation to the solution. Lewis and Leventhal then proved a similar result for the randomized Gauss-Seidel algorithm. However, the behavior of both methods depends heavily on whether the system is under or overdetermined, and whether it is consistent or not. Here we provide a unified theory of both methods, their variants for these different settings, and draw connections between …

Information Systems and Engineering Management Research Publications

We present new, high-precision Doppler radial velocity (RV) data sets for the nearby K3V star HD 219134. The data include 175 velocities obtained with the HIRES Spectrograph at the Keck I Telescope and 101 velocities obtained with the Levy Spectrograph at the Automated Planet Finder Telescope at Lick Observatory. Our observations reveal six new planetary candidates, with orbital periods of P = 3.1, 6.8, 22.8, 46.7, 94.2, and 2247 days, spanning masses of ${\mathcal{M}}\mathrm{sin}i=3.8,$ 3.5, 8.9, 21.3, 10.8, and $108\;{{\mathcal{M}}}_{\oplus }$, respectively. Our analysis indicates that the outermost signal is unlikely to be an artifact induced by stellar activity. In …

On Some Mathematical Problems Related To The Foundations Of (Classical) Statistical Mechanics, Alexander Grigo Nov 2015

On Some Mathematical Problems Related To The Foundations Of (Classical) Statistical Mechanics, Alexander Grigo

Dynamical Systems Seminar

The study of mechanical systems has a several centuries long history of major scientific advances and discoveries. In particular, within the last 100 years two qualitatively distinct features, namely stability and stochastic-like behavior, have been studied with various success in a variety of contexts (e.g., the solar system and Brownian motion). In this talk, I will describe a few examples which are addressing the question of (1) how it is possible that even simple mechanical systems can behave like a random system, and (2) how it is possible to predict the evolution of mechanical systems with very many constituents. The …

Bacterial Community Dynamics In Marine Sponge Cinachyrella Kuekenthali Under Irradiance And Antibiotics, Nidhi Vijayan Nov 2015

Bacterial Community Dynamics In Marine Sponge Cinachyrella Kuekenthali Under Irradiance And Antibiotics, Nidhi Vijayan

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

The Marine sponge Cinachyrella sp used in this study are commonly found in offshore South Florida and Caribbean waters and appeared to be resilient in closed system aquaculture. Marine sponges host diverse bacterial symbionts that are distinct compared to bacteria found in ambient seawater, however the roles of a large fraction of the bacterial community in marine sponges are unknown. Comparison of symbiotic to aposymbiotic (bacteria-free) sponges could provide information about interactions (metabolic and physiologic) between the bacteria and sponge. In this study, a single Cinachyrella kuekenthali individual was subsectioned into explants (N=240) in order to provide identical bacterial communities …

Progress Toward A Structure-Function Relationship For Novel, Small-Molecule Inhibitors Of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1, Sarah Burke Nov 2015

Progress Toward A Structure-Function Relationship For Novel, Small-Molecule Inhibitors Of Plasminogen Activator Inhibitor-1, Sarah Burke

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1) is a serpin protein whose function is to inhibit tissue-type plasminogen activator (tPA) and urokinase-type plasminogen activator (uPA), and hence, fibrinolysis. This inhibition leads to decreased plasminogen to plasmin conversion, which results in deleterious effects on the organism, such as blood clots. Elevated levels of PAI-1 are implicated in a variety of diseases and conditions. We have synthesized a variety of novel, small-molecule PAI-1 inhibitors in order to establish a structure-function relationship throughout the compounds. This goal was accomplished through an iterative process in which only one aspect of the molecule was altered at a time. …

Narrow Na And K Absorption Lines Toward T Tauri Stars: Tracing The Atomic Envelope Of Molecular Clouds, I. Pascucci, Suzan Edwards, M Heyer, E. Rigliaco, L. Hillenbrand, U. Gorti, D. Hollenbach, M. N. Simon

Astronomy: Faculty Publications

We present a detailed analysis of narrow Na I and K I absorption resonance lines toward nearly 40 T Tauri stars in Taurus with the goal of clarifying their origin. The Na I λ5889.95 line is detected toward all but one source, while the weaker K I λ7698.96 line is detected in about two-thirds of the sample. The similarity in their peak centroids and the significant positive correlation between their equivalent widths demonstrate that these transitions trace the same atomic gas. The absorption lines are present toward both disk and diskless young stellar objects, which excludes cold gas within the …

The acceptance-corrected dielectron excess mass spectra, where the known hadronic sources have been subtracted from the inclusive dielectron mass spectra, are reported for the first time at mid-rapidity ∣yee∣+ Au collisions at √sNN = 19.6 and 200 GeV. The excess mass spectra are consistently described by a model calculation with a broadened ρ spectral function for Mee < 1.1 GeV/c2. The integrated dielectron excess yield at √sNN = 19.6 GeV for 0.4 < Mee < 0.75 GeV/c2, normalized to the charged particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity, has a value similar to that in ln+ln collisions at …

Novel Enzyme Perspectives: Arylalkylamine N-Acyltransferases From Bombyx Mori & 1-Deoxy- D-Xylulose-5-Phosphate Synthase From Plasmodium Falciparum And Plasmodium Vivax, Matthew R. Battistini

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation is dedicated to the research and investigation of novel enzymes and the methods used to study them, with physiological roles ranging from isoprenoid biosynthesis to neurotransmitter production. Using a combination of bioinformatics, recombinant cloning, enzymology, and proteomics, we have contributed to the understanding and exploration of several human illnesses, including malaria, cancer, and endocrine dysfunction.

Our first project involved studying the enzymes responsible for N-acylarylalkylamide biosynthesis in Bombyx mori. Very little is known how these potent signaling molecules are produced in vivo, however, one possible pathway is the direct conjugation of an acyl-CoA to a corresponding …

The Pros And Cons Of Sick Pay Schemes: Testing For Contagious Presenteeism And Shirking Behavior, Stefan Pichler, Nicolas R. Ziebarth Nov 2015

The Pros And Cons Of Sick Pay Schemes: Testing For Contagious Presenteeism And Shirking Behavior, Stefan Pichler, Nicolas R. Ziebarth

Upjohn Institute Working Papers

This paper proposes a test for the existence and degree of contagious presenteeism and negative externalities in sickness insurance schemes. First, we theoretically decompose moral hazard into shirking and contagious presenteeism behavior and derive testable conditions. Then, we implement the test exploiting German sick pay reforms and administrative industry-level data on certified sick leave by diagnoses. The labor supply adjustment for contagious diseases is significantly smaller than for noncontagious diseases. Lastly, using Google Flu data and the staggered implementation of U.S. sick leave reforms, we show that flu rates decrease after employees gain access to paid sick leave.

Fusion Algebras & Accidental Trigonometry, Christopher D. Goff Nov 2015

Fusion Algebras & Accidental Trigonometry, Christopher D. Goff

College of the Pacific Faculty Presentations

Have you ever been working in one area of math, and another area arises unexpectedly? While working on a problem in 2008, we inadvertently discovered some trigonometric identities. This talk will explain fusion algebras, which are relatively simple algebraic objects that demonstrate nice algebraic applications of linear algebra. Then we will see how trigonometry can arise in even this most algebraic of settings.

How Visuo-Spatial Mental Imagery Develops: Image Generation And Maintenance, Mc Wimmer, Kl Maras, Ej Robinson, Mj Doherty, N Pugeault

School of Psychology

Two experiments examined the nature of visuo-spatial mental imagery generation and maintenance in 4-, 6-, 8-, 10-year old children and adults (N = 211). The key questions were how image generation and maintenance develop (Experiment 1) and how accurately children and adults coordinate mental and visually perceived images (Experiment 2). Experiment 1 indicated that basic image generation and maintenance abilities are present at 4 years of age but the precision with which images are generated and maintained improves particularly between 4 and 8 years. In addition to increased precision, Experiment 2 demonstrated that generated and maintained mental images become increasingly …

Consistency Of Estimators In Partially Observed Subcritical Branching Processes With Immigration, I. Rahimov Nov 2015

Consistency Of Estimators In Partially Observed Subcritical Branching Processes With Immigration, I. Rahimov

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

It is known that in subcritical branching process with stationary immigration the average population size for the first n generations and the ratio of the reproduction process to the total progeny are strongly consistent estimators for the mean of the stationary distribution and for the offspring mean, respectively. We prove that the same estimators remain strongly consistent, if we have only partial observations of the population and the number of immigrants. We also show that the rates of convergence of the estimators to the true values of the parameters are the same as in the case of complete observation.

Taylor Series For Survival Function Approximation Using Doubly Censoring With Covariates, Bader A. Aljawadi Nov 2015

Taylor Series For Survival Function Approximation Using Doubly Censoring With Covariates, Bader A. Aljawadi

Journal of Statistics Applications & Probability

In many real epidemiology or clinical trials, doubly censoring is a common practice. Where the generated data sets may result in right or left censored failure times along with complete times. In this article, the nonparametric maximum likelihood estimation technique for approximating the survival function when some covariates are involved under doubly censoring scheme is employed. The Taylor series is used to extract the baseline hazard function in the Cox model and hence the likelihood ratio test is also used to determine the appropriate order for Taylor series. This analytical approach demonstrates by a simulation study followed by a real …
