A Brief Characterisation Of Morphological Causation In Irish, Brian Nolan Nov 2015

A Brief Characterisation Of Morphological Causation In Irish, Brian Nolan

The ITB Journal

In this paper we attempt to characterise some elements of morphological causation as expressed in modern Irish. Three types of causation may be identified: lexical, periphrastic and morphological. In terms of the relative weightings of each type, the morphological causative is the least productive. Its use appears to be highly constrained to two very specific domains and it is signalled by particular morphological affixes. Lexical causatives are more productive than the morphological causative. By contrast, periphrastic or analytical causatives are highly productive and wide-ranging in their deployment. We concentrate in this analysis on some data on morphological causation.

The ITB Journal

I am delighted to introduce the fifth edition of the ITB Journal, the academic journal of the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown. The aim and purpose of the journal is to provide a forum whereby the members of ITB, visitors and guest contributors from other third level colleges can publish an article on their research in a multidisciplinary journal. The hope is that by offering the chance to bring their work out of their specialised area into a wider forum, they will share their work with the broader community at ITB and other academic institutions.

University Supervisors' Perspectives On The Student Teaching Timeframe, Sally E. Arnett-Hartwick, Sarah Bradshaw Nov 2015

University Supervisors' Perspectives On The Student Teaching Timeframe, Sally E. Arnett-Hartwick, Sarah Bradshaw

Online Journal for Workforce Education and Development

Structured Abstract

Objective: The purpose of this research study was to describe university supervisors’ perception of extending the student teaching time frame in a family and consumer sciences (FCS) teacher education program. Background: Recently, a Midwestern State University FCS teacher education program extended the length of student teaching from 10 to 16 weeks. To verify if the student teaching timeframe mattered in enhancing the development of FCS teacher candidates, this study sought the perspectives of university supervisors who worked in both timeframes. Method: Using a qualitative design, interviews were conducted with two FCS university supervisors who supervised student teachers in …

Mental Spaces: Processes For Establishing And Linking Spaces, Brian Nolan Nov 2015

Mental Spaces: Processes For Establishing And Linking Spaces, Brian Nolan

The ITB Journal

This paper reviews the theory of mental spaces as expounded by Fauconnier (1994). In this work he posits a theory in which reference has a structural dimension. Within the theory, this structure is represented using spaces, connectors across the spaces and some general principles that are found to apply. The complexity lies in the interaction between the principles and in the contextual structures that feed into the principles for interpretation. Brugman, in her 1996 paper, makes use of insights from mental spaces theory to conduct an analysis of HAVE-constructions. She notes that Fauconnier has “elaborated a theory of partial possible …

One Island, One People, One Nation: Early Latin Evidence For This Motif In Ireland, Thomas O’Loughlin Nov 2015

One Island, One People, One Nation: Early Latin Evidence For This Motif In Ireland, Thomas O’Loughlin

The ITB Journal

That the island of Ireland is the home of the Irish, and consequently that ‘the nation’ and the territory of the island mutually define one another, has been one of the central assumptions of Irish nationalism. Just as an island is a single discrete entity -- the very icon for something well marked off from other things by ‘clear blue water’ -- so the people on it have been assumed to be a distinct group. More than just a collection of individuals or families, they have been assumed to form a ‘nation’ with a separate identity and destiny from their …

English Language Learners On The Autism Spectrum: Identifying Gaps In Learning, Jennifer Suzanne Reppond Nov 2015

English Language Learners On The Autism Spectrum: Identifying Gaps In Learning, Jennifer Suzanne Reppond

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

This research project reports on questionnaire survey answers that Special Education (SPED) educators, English as second language (ESL) educators, and a speech language pathologist (SLP) currently working in the classroom, on school campuses, and private practices, gave as being a part of this study. Their answers sought to uncover gaps in the environment that might lead to unsuccessful execution of a cross-educational learning environment for the English language learner (ELL) with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD); highlights encompass where the educators felt gaps existed and where these gaps could be bridged for a better, more successful learning outcome. This project …

Passive Voice Constructions In Modern Irish, Brian Nolan Nov 2015

Passive Voice Constructions In Modern Irish, Brian Nolan

The ITB Journal

This paper is about the passive construction, of which modern Irish (a VSO language) has two primary forms, the personal passive and its variants, and the impersonal. An empirical question is posed as to whether a third passive form exists within the language, that of a functionally defined GET-passive. To deliver a unified analysis of the various passive constructions, a perspective that takes account of the complete event is necessary.

A Cognitive Neural Architecture Able To Learn And Communicate Through Natural Language, B Golosio, A Cangelosi, O Gamotina, Gl Masala Nov 2015

A Cognitive Neural Architecture Able To Learn And Communicate Through Natural Language, B Golosio, A Cangelosi, O Gamotina, Gl Masala

School of Engineering, Computing and Mathematics

Communicative interactions involve a kind of procedural knowledge that is used by the human brain for processing verbal and nonverbal inputs and for language production. Although considerable work has been done on modeling human language abilities, it has been difficult to bring them together to a comprehensive tabula rasa system compatible with current knowledge of how verbal information is processed in the brain. This work presents a cognitive system, entirely based on a large-scale neural architecture, which was developed to shed light on the procedural knowledge involved in language elaboration. The main component of this system is the central executive, …

A More Perfect European Union?: The Transnational Networks Of The European Union’S Embassy Open House In Washington, D.C., Timothy Barney Nov 2015

A More Perfect European Union?: The Transnational Networks Of The European Union’S Embassy Open House In Washington, D.C., Timothy Barney

Rhetoric and Communication Studies Faculty Publications

Annually, the Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Washington, D.C., holds an embassy open house day for its 27 member nations to celebrate European culture and educate tourists on the functions of EU politics and international relations. Amidst an ongoing debt crisis and a continuing exploration of its identity as a supranational entity, “Embassy Day” affords an opportunity to see the EU as a spatial network uneasily caught in the tensions between the often nostalgic nationalism of its constituent countries and the future-oriented technocratic transnationalism of its composite alliance. By analyzing the cultural artifacts of Embassy Day from its …

Increasing Language Awareness And Self-Efficacy Of Fl Students Using Self-Assessment And The Actfl Proficiency Guidelines, Elizabeth M. Kissling, M. E. O'Donnell

Latin American, Latino and Iberian Studies Faculty Publications

This study describes how oral language was assessed in an advanced-level college foreign language (FL) conversation course. Learners used the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines to guide self-analyses of their oral production at intervals throughout the course. The intent was to provide opportunities for learners to develop an understanding of what constitutes oral proficiency, gauge their own progress, and set personal goals. Learners’ self-analysis narratives suggested they began to notice different aspects of their speech and to better articulate their abilities and limitations. Broadly speaking, the results suggest that self-assessment of oral performance guided by the Proficiency Guidelines is an effective way …

Transaction Circles With Digital Texts As A Foundation For Democratic Practices, Sally Brown Nov 2015

Transaction Circles With Digital Texts As A Foundation For Democratic Practices, Sally Brown

Democracy & Education

Transaction circles weave together elements of guided reading and literature circles in an open conversational structure that supports students as agentive learners. Discourse within these circles utilizing digital informational texts assist in the development of democratic practices even in a time when federal mandates limit curricula and prescribe programs. The findings of this study reveal the importance of aesthetic learning experiences in knowledge construction and the ways in which thinking through complex issues with others benefits social action.

"How To Be Nice And Get What You Want": Structural Referents Of "Self" And "Other" In Experiential Education As (Un)Democratic Practice, Franklin Vernon Nov 2015

"How To Be Nice And Get What You Want": Structural Referents Of "Self" And "Other" In Experiential Education As (Un)Democratic Practice, Franklin Vernon

Democracy & Education

This critical ethnography explores a social justice program utilizing nontraditional, democratic, "experiential" education practices. The author posits a historical legacy of pedagogy of self obscures its emancipatory, democratic potential while simultaneously expanding on contemporary discourses of self and other as aspects of the educational setting. Students' labors to reference and enact oppressive, capitalistic idealizations of either self or other problematizes pragmatic theories of self, and the author draws upon critical pragmatism to reposition self and other as aspects of pedagogy and curriculum in democratic education.

Mindfulness, Democracy, And Education, Andrea Marie Hyde, James G. Laprad Nov 2015

Mindfulness, Democracy, And Education, Andrea Marie Hyde, James G. Laprad

Democracy & Education

In this article, we explain how mindfulness can enhance a democratic way of being, connecting practices of awareness, reflection, dialog, and action to democratic citizenship and social arrangements. We begin by sharing our understanding of democracy as a philosophy and a political system. We then provide a background for the concept of mindfulness as it is used by those in the field of education and health care and as we connect it to democracy and democratic education. We introduce a mindfulness pedagogy and use this pedagogy to develop our concept of mindfully democratic schools. We use the work of John …

Ethics In Teaching For Democracy And Social Justice, Kathy Hytten Nov 2015

Ethics In Teaching For Democracy And Social Justice, Kathy Hytten

Democracy & Education

In this essay, I offer provocations toward an ethics of teaching for democracy and social justice. I argue that while driven by compelling macro social and political visions, social justice teachers do not pay sufficient attention to the moral dimensions of micro, classroom-level interactions in their work. I begin by describing social justice education. I then discuss the ways in which social justice educators have talked about issues of ethics in their work in terms of broad political visions, and in response to resistant students and charges of liberal bias. I illustrate gaps in these efforts, particularly in relation to …

The Issue Of Minorities In The Balkans, Ilir Zylfiu Nov 2015

The Issue Of Minorities In The Balkans, Ilir Zylfiu

UBT International Conference

The problem of the protection of minorities was raised as an issue in the Treaty of Versailles, completed at the end of the war by the major Allied powers. The Allies had imposed certain obligations on the treatment of minorities to such states that had them in their territories. They also forecasted a trusted international organization with universal character, the League of Nations, the mission to ensure the protection of European minorities. Since the fall of the Berlin Wall and communist regimes, Europe was a witness nationalism outbreak. Whole regions were covered with ethnic conflicts which were a serious threat …

Identifying And Addressing Disproportionality Within A School-Wide Positive Behavioral Interventions And Supports Framework, Kathryn Roose, Ashley Greenwald, Kaci Fleetwood, Jodie Soracco

National Youth-At-Risk Conference, West (Archived)

Over 25 years of research has indicated that minority students are up to two to three times more likely to receive office discipline referrals, school suspensions, and expulsions than their peers. This presentation will address disproportionality by demonstrating how to identify disproportionality using school-wide data systems, and give recommendations on how to reduce disproportionality by intervening at a systems level.
