Culture Shifting At Warp Speed: How The Law, Public Engagement, And Will & Grace Led To Social Change For Lgbt People, Stacey L. Sobel Nov 2015

Culture Shifting At Warp Speed: How The Law, Public Engagement, And Will & Grace Led To Social Change For Lgbt People, Stacey L. Sobel

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

This Article concludes that in order for culture shifting to occur, there has to be active engagement in advocacy on multiple fronts. The pace of cultural change would have been significantly slower if advocates had not pursued litigation, legislation, and public engagement strategies. Rule shifting and culture shifting would also have occurred more slowly but for the vigorous efforts of LGBT equality opponents. The competing advocacy efforts on both sides of LGBT issues have resulted in lawsuits and laws limiting the rights of the LGBT community in some instances and granting rights in others. These advocacy efforts created a …

The Justice Element Of Promissory Estoppel, Orit Gan Nov 2015

The Justice Element Of Promissory Estoppel, Orit Gan

St. John's Law Review

(Excerpt)

The contribution of this Article is threefold. First, it critiques the current case law for ignoring and neglecting the justice element of promissory estoppel. This goes against the specific wording of section 90 of the Restatement (Second) of Contracts and also against promissory estoppel’s rationale and purpose. Contrary to this approach, this Article suggests a robust justice element based on a theory of distributive justice.

Second, a more robust justice element will make the doctrine of promissory estoppel more meaningful. This will result in better protecting reliance, furthering trust and cooperation among parties, empowering disadvantaged parties, and making the …

Towards A Study Of Situation Types Of Irish, Brian Nolan Nov 2015

Towards A Study Of Situation Types Of Irish, Brian Nolan

The ITB Journal

In this paper we analyse the structure of situation types as found in Irish. We translate these situation types into a logical metalanguage, giving the logical structure of each type. We do this to differentiate, for Irish, the aktionsarten distinctions of state, activity, achievement and accomplishment as they are found within the language. The motivation of this paper is therefore to describe the aktionsart of modern Irish and to determine the logical structure that underpins these situation types.

Fuzzy Logic And Neural Networks - A Glimpse Of The Future, Raymond Manley Nov 2015

Fuzzy Logic And Neural Networks - A Glimpse Of The Future, Raymond Manley

The ITB Journal

In 1965 Lofti Zadeh published his paper on fuzzy set theory , putting it forward as a way of more closely realising the human thought process. Many systems developed to aid human activities have been based on definitive , yes/no, type decision making processes. An example is the way all computers are based on the binary logic system where only two possible and separate logic levels are allowed, a logic 1 or logic 0. However, we know from everyday experience that humans think in terms of vague linguistic categories, for example, the weather is fairly good today. "Fairly good" represents …

Are Call Packages Disregarding The Research On Dealing With Authentic Materials?, Ruth Harris Nov 2015

Are Call Packages Disregarding The Research On Dealing With Authentic Materials?, Ruth Harris

The ITB Journal

Since the advent of the communicative method, authentic materials have been seen as an important source of input for second language acquisition. However they have been noticeably absent from CALL packages. This paper looks at the implications of the research on reading, and explores which areas of work on authentic materials can be successfully done using CALL, and areas which are best left to a classroom, groupwork or semi-autonomous environment. A model of an integrated approach proposes ways of maximising the potential of each, providing new challenges for the teacher and student alike.

Editorial, Brian Nolan

The ITB Journal

It gives me great pleasure to introduce you to this, the first edition of the ITB Journal, the academic journal of the Institute of Technology Blanchardstown. It uniquely offers the opportunity for the members of ITB, visitors and guest contributors to publish an article on their research in a multidisciplinary journal. The hope is that by offering the chance to bring their work out of their specialised area into a wider forum, they will share their work with the broader community at ITB and other academic institutions.

Interpret The Numbers: Putting E-Book Usage Statistics In Context, Maria Savova, Madelynn Dickerson Nov 2015

Interpret The Numbers: Putting E-Book Usage Statistics In Context, Maria Savova, Madelynn Dickerson

Library Staff Publications and Research

E-books have been an integral part of library collections for a long time now, but they are still surrounded by controversy. How much our patrons really use them? That seemingly simple question has a very complicated answer that could depend on a number of factors. The e-books’ usage reports mean very little on their own and leave many unanswered questions. In order to contextualize the usage statistics, the Claremont Colleges Library conducted an analysis of enhanced usage reports in comparison with the total offerings of e-book content available to our users from all major providers, and through all access models. …

“That Sucks?”: An Evaluation Of The Communication Competence And Enacted Social Support Of Response Messages To Depression Disclosures In College-Aged Students, Daniel Vieth Nov 2015

“That Sucks?”: An Evaluation Of The Communication Competence And Enacted Social Support Of Response Messages To Depression Disclosures In College-Aged Students, Daniel Vieth

James Madison Undergraduate Research Journal (JMURJ)

Recent communication research on depression has focused on which response messages are most effective in providing emotional comfort to depressed individuals during depression dialogues. This study investigates the impact that a confidant’s initial response to a disclosure has on the disclosing individual, a key moment of dialogue for those with depression. It examines the relationship between the communication competence of responses to depression disclosures and how individuals rate those responses’ enacted social support, hypothesizing that the higher the communication competence of a confidant’s response (where competence reflects the effectiveness of interdependent communication), the more enacted social support the discloser will …

Like Blood From A Stone: Teasing Out Social Difference From Lithic Production Debris At Kolomoki (9er1), Martin Menz Nov 2015

Like Blood From A Stone: Teasing Out Social Difference From Lithic Production Debris At Kolomoki (9er1), Martin Menz

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Early phases of Kolomoki’s occupation have been characterized as relatively egalitarian, with little evidence for status differentiation. However, patterned variability in lithic raw material use and intensity of production in domestic areas suggests heterogeneity in the community at multiple scales. In light of Kolomoki’s emphasis on communal ceremony, internal divisions between groups of households highlight the tension between public and private expressions of status and social solidarity. New radiocarbon dates from the southern margins of the village have allowed us to assess the contemporaneity of this pattern, and by extension, the chronology of village aggregation.

Do Predictive Brain Implants Threaten Patient Autonomy Or Authenticity?, Eldar Sarajlic Nov 2015

Do Predictive Brain Implants Threaten Patient Autonomy Or Authenticity?, Eldar Sarajlic

Publications and Research

In this commentary, I discuss this Frederic Gilbert's claim that predictive brain implants (PBIs) threaten persons’ autonomy by diminishing their postoperative experience of self-control. Contrary to Gilbert, I suggest that PBIs do not pose a significant threat to patient’s autonomy, as self-control, but rather to his or her sense of authenticity. My claim is that the language of authenticity, already introduced in the recent bioethical literature, may offer a better way to voice some of the concerns with PBIs that Gilbert recognized.

Let’S Move! Biocitizens And The Fat Kids On The Block, Mary Catherine Dickman Nov 2015

Let’S Move! Biocitizens And The Fat Kids On The Block, Mary Catherine Dickman

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This project analyzed First Lady Michelle Obama’s Let’s Move! campaign for how it constructs obesity and health. Let’s Move! is a national internet-based campaign to end childhood obesity. The literature on Let’s Move! is limited and focuses on the privatization and corporatization of children’s physical education in public schools. Taking an intersectional approach to critical fat studies, I use critical discourse analysis to investigate how the language used in the Let’s Move! campaign (re)enforces and (re)signifies cultural notions of fat as a social problem – specifically that fat bodies are diseased, unproductive, and a financial burden. I maintain that the …

The Cultural Adaptation Of The Clinician-Administered Ptsd Scale For Spanish-Speaking Latinos With Limited English Proficiency In The United States, Maria Jose Rendon Nov 2015

The Cultural Adaptation Of The Clinician-Administered Ptsd Scale For Spanish-Speaking Latinos With Limited English Proficiency In The United States, Maria Jose Rendon

Open Access Dissertations

In this study, I conducted an empirically-based adaptation of the Clinician-Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5; Weathers, Blake, Schnurr, Marx, & Keane, 2013b) for Spanish-speaking Latinos with limited English proficiency (LEP). The sample utilized cross-cultural equivalence guidelines posited by the Cultural Equivalence Model (Canino & Bravo, 1994; Flaherty et al., 1988) to achieve content, semantic, and technical equivalence between the Spanish adaptation of the CAPS-5 and its original English version. This process entailed seven steps: (a) the forward translation by a native Spanish speaker, (b) revision by a panel of bilingual Latino mental health professionals (n = 3), (c) revision …

A Tale Of Two Reports: What Recent Publications From The Alzheimer’S Association And Institute Of Medicine Say About The State Of The Field, Peter J. Whitehouse Nov 2015

A Tale Of Two Reports: What Recent Publications From The Alzheimer’S Association And Institute Of Medicine Say About The State Of The Field, Peter J. Whitehouse

Faculty Scholarship

Scientific reports hold a mirror up to a culture, reflecting the beliefs, values, assumptions, practices, technologies, and political-economic interests that shape discourse around particular diseases in particular cultural moments [1]. Indeed, despite their authoritative patina, such reports are “living documents” that invite critical analysis about where discourse in a particular field has been and where it is going. In this spirit, two recent reports from the Alzheimer’s Association (Changing the Trajectory of Alzheimer’s Disease: How a Treatment by 2025 Saves Lives and Dollars) and the Institute of Medicine in the United States (Cognitive Aging: Progress in Understanding and Opportunities for …

Auditory Processing And Linguistic Prosody As Cross-Linguistic Precursors In Reading Development, Wei-Lun Chung Nov 2015

Auditory Processing And Linguistic Prosody As Cross-Linguistic Precursors In Reading Development, Wei-Lun Chung

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

Little is known about the role of prosody in word reading. Mandarin-English bilingual speakers who speak Mandarin as a first language (L1) and English as a second language (L2) are particularly interesting because they must acquire two segmental/phonology systems (Mandarin has simpler syllable structures than does English), linguistic prosody systems (Mandarin tone and English stress), and orthographic systems (Chinese characters and English alphabet). The two papers included in the dissertation implemented correlational designs to examine the contributions of prosodic awareness and other variables to word reading in adult Mandarin-speaking English learners and Mandarin-English bilingual children. The first paper examined English …

Evaluation Of Mammography Screening And Awareness Health Promotion Interventions Targeting Women With Disabilities: A Systematic Literature Review, Frances Irene Esquibel Nov 2015

Evaluation Of Mammography Screening And Awareness Health Promotion Interventions Targeting Women With Disabilities: A Systematic Literature Review, Frances Irene Esquibel

Public Administration ETDs

Research evaluating the effectiveness of health promotion interventions that aim to increase mammography utilization and or awareness among women with disabilities is extremely limited. The purpose of this thesis was to systematically review the literature that does exist, and examine the effectiveness and methodological rigor of various health promotion interventions, that aim to increase mammography utilization among women with disabilities. This thesis followed a five-step systematic review process: framing of the research question, identification of relevant work, extraction of relevant data on outcomes and quality, summarization of evidence, and interpretation of evidence. The sample consisted of eight articles that were …
