"Will The Sun Come Up In The Morning?" : The 1999-2000 Conflict Between Summerhill School And The British Department For Education And Employment, Emily Kerwin

Honors Theses

On March 23, 2000 a group of school children sat in the Royal Courts of Justice in London and voted to accept an agreement between Secretary of State for Education David Blunkett and their school, Summerhill School in Leiston, Suffolk. This vote ended a year-long fight to keep the school from closing. Carmen Cordwell, the chair of that meeting later remarked, "This is our charter for freedom. After 79 years, this is the first official recognition that A.S. Neill's philosophy of education provides an acceptable alternative to compulsory lessons and the tyranny of compulsory exams. With this one bound, we …

Destabilizing Property, Ezra Rosser Jan 2015

Destabilizing Property, Ezra Rosser

Connecticut Law Review

Property theory has entered into uncertain times. Conservative and progressive scholars are, it seems, fiercely contesting everything, from what is at the core of property to what obligations owners owe society. Fundamentally, the debate is about whether property law works. Conservatives believe that property law works. Progressives believe property law could and should work, though it needs to be made more inclusive. While there have been numerous responses to the conservative emphasis on exclusion, this Article begins by addressing a related line of argument, the recent attacks information theorists have made on the bundle of rights conception of property. This …

Russian Silver Age Poetry: Texts And Contexts, Sibelan E. S. Forrester, M. Kelly

Russian Faculty Works

Russian Silver Age writers were full participants in European literary debates and movements. Today some of these poets, such as Akhmatova, Mandelstam, Mayakovsky, Pasternak, and Tsvetaeva, are known around the world. This volume introduces Silver Age poetry with its cultural ferment, the manifestos and the philosophical, religious, and aesthetic debates, the occult references and sexual experimentation, and the emergence of women, Jews, gay and lesbian poets, and peasants as part of a brilliant and varied poetic environment. After a thorough introduction, the volume offers brief biographies of the poets and selections of their work in translation―many of them translated especially …

The Growth Of Gothic Identity In Visigothic Spain: The Evidence Of Textual Sources, Erica Buchberger Jan 2015

The Growth Of Gothic Identity In Visigothic Spain: The Evidence Of Textual Sources, Erica Buchberger

History Faculty Publications

In recent years, scholars have made significant progress in understanding the transition from a Roman world to a medieval world in Spain. New archaeological excavations have added to our knowledge of the early medieval landscape, and increasingly analytical discussions of the labels used to describe people and objects have brought new depth to both historical and archaeological studies. In place of black and white visions of Goth vs. Roman and continuity vs. discontinuity, it has become more common to see Visigothic Spain as a complex mix of elements on their own terms. What it was like be a Roman in …

An Examination Of The Relationship Among Iraqi High School Students' Science Achievement And Perceptions Of The Value Of Education, Parent Support, And Peer Support In The United States, Samir F. Al-Mandwee Jan 2015

An Examination Of The Relationship Among Iraqi High School Students' Science Achievement And Perceptions Of The Value Of Education, Parent Support, And Peer Support In The United States, Samir F. Al-Mandwee

Wayne State University Dissertations

The objective of this dissertation was to quantitatively study Iraqi students (N=90) who arrived in the U.S.A. in the last 20 years. A non-experimental, descriptive research design was used for this study, which took place in one of three high schools in a large Midwestern suburban school district, during the 2013-2014 academic year. Three factors, including the students' perception of the value of education, the parental support, and the peer support, were examined using the Facilitating Conditions Questionnaire. The three subscales were part of a larger self-administered questionnaire used by McInerney (1997). In addition to the FCQ survey, a student …

From Local To Global: Purpose, Process, And Product In The Narratives Of Eighth Grade Language Arts Students, Amira Saad Kassem Jan 2015

From Local To Global: Purpose, Process, And Product In The Narratives Of Eighth Grade Language Arts Students, Amira Saad Kassem

Wayne State University Dissertations

Using a convenience sampling of 10 eighth-grade language arts students, this exploratory case study examined in depth the literacy processes used by ten 8th grade students to generate various multimodal artifacts that comprise their final projects and the nature of the literacy transactions that fostered these processes over the course of one year in this language arts classroom. Following closely (via the case studies in Chapter Five) how four of the ten students used the literacy events of the classroom to claim spaces to perceive and perform their voices and visions, the study revealed how these students were able to …

Mythicism And The Making Of Mark, James F. Mcgrath Jan 2015

Mythicism And The Making Of Mark, James F. Mcgrath

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

Carrier’s approach allows him to say that every single thing he finds in the relevant sources is “exactly what we’d expect” if mythicism is true – “as symbolic myth, every oddity is explained, and indeed expected.” This is because “they made this up” is compatible with everything that any text says – especially if one excludes in advance the possibility of using traditional critical methods and criteria for determining that some details may reflect actual historical events.

Of Frogs & Rhetoric: The Atrazine Wars, Carol Reeves Jan 2015

Of Frogs & Rhetoric: The Atrazine Wars, Carol Reeves

Scholarship and Professional Work - LAS

In a scientific dispute over the effects of atrazine on amphibians, chemical industry–funded and publically funded scientists present stunningly contrasting constructions of atrazine's environmental concentrations, persistence, and potential to harm. Considerable scientific uncertainties and variable ranges allow authors to construct preferred versions of the story of atrazine. These incommensurate rhetorical constructions, more the result of competing economic and environmental interests than of any paradigmatic misalignments, have prolonged the dispute not only over atrazine's effects but also over whether its sales should be banned.

The Metaculture Of Law School Admissions: A Commentary On Lazarus-Black And Globokar, Bonnie Urciuoli Jan 2015

The Metaculture Of Law School Admissions: A Commentary On Lazarus-Black And Globokar, Bonnie Urciuoli

Indiana Journal of Global Legal Studies

What does it mean for law school applicants to become, as Mindie Lazarus-Black and Julie Globokar put it, "what the ranking[s] count[]"? What does it mean for foreign applicants to develop responses to the application process by writing essays in certain ways, to project themselves (again as Lazarus-Black and Globokar put it) as "commodified persona[s]"? The application process analyzed by Lazarus-Black and Globokar exemplifies what Greg Urban calls metaculture: cultural forms that point actors toward recognizing and understanding what they do as exemplifying a particular cultural pattern. Metaculture is the mechanism by which culture is reproduced, moving through time and …

Darse Al Diablo: Spanish Literature, Music, And Society In El Diablo Cojuelo (1878) By Composer Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, And Librettists Mariano Pina Domínguez And Miguel Ramos Carrión, Victoria Wolff Jan 2015

Darse Al Diablo: Spanish Literature, Music, And Society In El Diablo Cojuelo (1878) By Composer Francisco Asenjo Barbieri, And Librettists Mariano Pina Domínguez And Miguel Ramos Carrión, Victoria Wolff

Decimonónica

The events of the Glorious Revolution in Spain (1868), the establishment of the First Spanish Republic (1873–1874), and the Restoration of the monarchy (1875) inspired composers and librettists of Spanish musical theater to reflect on the expression of national culture through the unification of music, literature, and performance. Drawing from the well-established practice of refundiciones, or the rewriting of Spanish Golden-Age plays, many composers and librettists were intrigued by the potential for literary works from the national past to serve as foundations for relevant, yet entertaining, musico-dramatic works of the present. One such project was El Diablo Cojuelo: revista …

Spanish-American Travelers At Niagara Falls, 1824-1894: A ‘Real’ Confrontation With Nature And Language, Catherine Vallejo Jan 2015

Spanish-American Travelers At Niagara Falls, 1824-1894: A ‘Real’ Confrontation With Nature And Language, Catherine Vallejo

Decimonónica

In the nineteenth century, many of the intellectuals from Spanish America who traveled to the United Status included a visit to Niagara Falls, a ‘sublime’ experience (as per Burke and Lyotard) that also produced a need in them to write about it. I maintain that these texts demonstrate that the impact of the scene was such that it fundamentally took away the writer-traveler’s capacity to express himself in language, a capacity they all struggled to recover. Based on the narratives of ten travelers who visited Niagara in the seventy years between 1824 (José María Heredia) and 1894 (Paul Groussac), this …

You Don’T Need A Metaphor To Know Which Way The Case Goes: The Senate Reference And Constitutional Metaphors, Richard Haigh Jan 2015

You Don’T Need A Metaphor To Know Which Way The Case Goes: The Senate Reference And Constitutional Metaphors, Richard Haigh

The Supreme Court Law Review: Osgoode’s Annual Constitutional Cases Conference

This article uses the Supreme Court of Canada’s Reference re Senate Reform as a basis for arguing that metaphors are not always appropriate in constitutional adjudication. In that decision, the Court relies on the metaphor of “constitutional architecture” ten times (11 if a subheading is counted). Despite the multiple references, the Court leaves unanswered questions about what the architecture metaphor is doing. Does it help to clarify? Is it the same or different from the text itself? Is it the same or different from “structure”? Is not the metaphor itself capable of multiple meanings? Relying too heavily on metaphors allows …

Calculus For Decision Systems, Jorge Antonio Samayoa Ranero Jan 2015

Calculus For Decision Systems, Jorge Antonio Samayoa Ranero

Open Access Dissertations

The conceptualization of the term "system" has become highly dependent on the application domain. What a physicist means by the term system might be different than what a sociologist means by the same term. In 1956, Bertalanffy [1] defined a system as " a set of units with relationships among them". This and many other definitions of system share the idea of a system as a black box that has parts or elements interacting between each other. This means that at some level of abstraction all systems are similar, what eventually differentiates one system from another is the set of …

Proud To Be Autistic: Metaphorical Construction And Salience Of Cultural And Personal Identity In #Stopcombatingme, Jessica Benham Jan 2015

Proud To Be Autistic: Metaphorical Construction And Salience Of Cultural And Personal Identity In #Stopcombatingme, Jessica Benham

All Graduate Theses, Dissertations, and Other Capstone Projects

Like many other autistic individuals, I struggle to find language to appropriately describe my experiences. Furthermore, within the Autistic community, debates over appropriate language use are frequent, including discussions on person-first language versus identity-first language, functioning language, and medical terminology. Through this research, I examine how rhetorical constructions of Autism gain power, focused on the role of language choice with regard to personal identity and self-advocacy and conduct a discourse analysis of the #StopCombatingMe movement on Twitter. Spearheaded by ASAN, a grassroots organization which seeks to challenge public dialogue on Autism, #StopCombatingMe sought to argue against the reauthorization of the …

Writing About Aj Pop B'Atz': Bruce Grindal And The Transformation Of Ethnographic Writing, Sarah Ashley Kistler Jan 2015

Writing About Aj Pop B'Atz': Bruce Grindal And The Transformation Of Ethnographic Writing, Sarah Ashley Kistler

Faculty Publications

The works of Bruce Grindal teach us many things about anthropology’s humanistic tradition. With examples such as Redneck Girl and “Postmodernism as Seen by the Boys at Downhome Auto Repair,” Bruce Grindal demonstrated how we can creatively engage our ethnographic writing to reflect lived experiences. In this article, I examine Bruce’s influence on my ethnographic writing and collaborative research in the Maya community of San Juan Chamelco, Guatemala. Since 2006, I have worked collectively with a group of Chamelqueños to investigate the story of their local hero, Aj Pop B’atz’. In the sixteenth century, Aj Pop B’atz’ welcomed Spanish invaders …

Clients Want Results, Lawyers Need Emotional Intelligence, Christine C. Kelton Jan 2015

Clients Want Results, Lawyers Need Emotional Intelligence, Christine C. Kelton

Cleveland State Law Review

Thinking requires emotions and emotions enhance thinking. This Article suggests that the emotionally intelligent lawyer is more likely to serve the needs of clients and the legal community than the lawyer who has less understanding of, and control over, emotions. Part II introduces two “emotionally unintelligent” lawyers, Amanda and Rick, and considers how their emotional “unintelligence” affects their new client, psychologist, Dr. Ray Randolph. Part III provides some background on the relevant research on emotional intelligence, including the history of intelligence, from general intelligence, to social intelligence, to multiple intelligences, and to emotional intelligence. Part IV defines and explores the …

What Do Auditors Promise Their Governmental Audit Clients? What Do Governmental Audit Clients Want? Audit Proposal Evidence From Governmental Audit Procurement Processes, Yu-Tzu Chang Jan 2015

What Do Auditors Promise Their Governmental Audit Clients? What Do Governmental Audit Clients Want? Audit Proposal Evidence From Governmental Audit Procurement Processes, Yu-Tzu Chang

Theses and Dissertations--Accountancy

This dissertation, consisting of two studies, analyzes a dataset of audit proposals to investigate auditors’ impression management strategies and audit procurement quality in the public sector. Text based analytic methods are employed to examine the content of audit proposals, which were submitted for government audit engagements in fifteen states.

The first study investigates auditors' marketing language and hypothesizes that CPA firms will project a cooperative, non-independent image in audit proposals to impress potential clients. The results suggest that CPA firms, especially larger ones, project a persona of a cooperative and trustworthy service provider than to present themselves as independent auditors. …

Somaesthetics And Dance, Curtis L. Carter Jan 2015

Somaesthetics And Dance, Curtis L. Carter

Philosophy Faculty Research and Publications

Dance is proposed as the most representative of somaesthetic arts in Thinking Through the Body: Essays in Somaesthetics and other writings of Richard Shusterman. Shuster- man offers a useful, but incomplete approach to somaesthetics of dance. In the examples provided, dance appears as subordinate to another art form (theater or photography) or as a means to achieving bodily excellence. Missing, for example, are accounts of the role of dance as an independent art form, how somaesthetics would address differences in varying approaches to dance, and attention to the viewer’s somaesthetic dance experience. Three strategies for developing new directions for dance …

Experiential Language Learning: A Short-Term Study Abroad Program To Quetzaltenango, Guatemala For Canton High School, Michelle Traub

Capstone Collection

Canton High School (CHS) is a 485 student, small upper-middle class public school located in Canton, Connecticut. The mission of the school involves preparing productive, tolerant and responsible citizens with the character and independence to embrace and contribute to the global world. However, CHS is limited in its ability to provide students with opportunities to connect with the world outside of Connecticut and the United States, both linguistically and culturally. Although the majority of Canton students take a language class freshman year, the number of students continuing on in learning a language drops every year thereafter. Many students state that …
