“We Kill Her, But We Do Not Kill Her:” A Translation And Staged Production Of Antígona Furiosa By Griselda Gambaro, Miranda Margolis

Theses & ETDs

This thesis studies the nature of translation and adaptation, specifically regarding Griselda Gambaro’s Antígona Furiosa. It considers the historical, cultural and linguistic elements of translation, as well as the challenges of performance within the context of translation. The second chapter of the thesis consists of an original translation of Gambaro’s Antígona Furiosa, and the third chapter is a discussion of its performance. A copy of that performance is included on a DVD.

Dancing Out Of Bounds: The Disruptive Image Of The Tavern Dancer In The Babylonian Talmud, Katherine Renee Mullin Jan 2015

Dancing Out Of Bounds: The Disruptive Image Of The Tavern Dancer In The Babylonian Talmud, Katherine Renee Mullin

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the image of the tavern dancer in two passages from the Babylonian Talmud. Using contemporaneous descriptions of dance and taverns in combination with modern scholarship of late antiquity, this thesis unpacks some of the implications of this image in the context of broader concerns in rabbinic literature of the time. Modern dance theories are used to facilitate this exploration, and generate a model for understanding rabbinic anxieties about the body of the tavern dancer. This thesis argues that the body of the tavern dancer is a productive site for the exposition of rabbinic anxieties about how bodies …

Travel Literature In Dialogue: Negotiated Resistance In The Colonial Encounter, Jessica Loeb Jan 2015

Travel Literature In Dialogue: Negotiated Resistance In The Colonial Encounter, Jessica Loeb

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines representation and resistance in the colonial encounter through a literary analysis of the following four books: Joseph Conrad’s Heart of Darkness (1899), Chinua Achebe’s Things Fall Apart (1958), Lady Mary Wortley Montagu’s Turkish Embassy Letters (1763) and Fatima Mernissi’s Dreams of Trespass: Tales of a Harem Girlhood (1995). These books are organized in chapter form in pairs, representing masculine and feminine, colonized and colonizer, Western and native, fiction and non-fiction perspectives. The literature covers a multiplicity of diverse times and places, yet all deal with similar problems, and in many ways are in dialogue with one another …

Talking Landscapes And Ways Of Seeing: An Archaeological Perspective On Oral Tradition Among Turkana Peoples, Katherine M. O'Brien Jan 2015

Talking Landscapes And Ways Of Seeing: An Archaeological Perspective On Oral Tradition Among Turkana Peoples, Katherine M. O'Brien

Theses & ETDs

While archaeology stems from Western colonial practice, there is a need to promote African archaeologies that integrate African ways of seeing the world. Landscape archaeology and oral tradition, used as historical tools, have the potential to create knowledge and interpretation free of the Western system of thought. In Turkana, Kenya, the dry, unpredictable landscape is a repository of Turkana pasts. Using landscape archaeology as a theoretical lens, this thesis is a survey of Turkana historical pasts through the present. Looking at the Turkana landscape as a multilayered and everchanging palimpsest can help one better understand how people live in and …

Rewriting Women’S Stories: Modern Adaptations Of Fairy Tales And Their Feminist Implications, Cassandra Corrado Jan 2015

Rewriting Women’S Stories: Modern Adaptations Of Fairy Tales And Their Feminist Implications, Cassandra Corrado

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines contemporary adaptations of the Grimm Brothers’ Snow White and Hans Christian Andersen’s The Little Mermaid. I argue that following Disney’s popular adaptations of these two tales, feminists responded with adaptations that reflected modern concerns. These adaptations also reflected the ways in which fairy tale heroines are often silenced and pushed into the margins by their authors. The adaptations that I examine include Gail Carson Levine’s Fairest, Barbara Walker’s “Snow Night,” Angela Carter’s “The Snow Child,” Carolyn Turgeon’s Mermaid, and Laura Antoniou’s “The Little Urban Maid.” This thesis is informed by Second- and Third-Wave feminism, and is particularly …

“Always A Blank Page For Each New Hand That Approaches”: The Graphic Novel As Bildungsroman, Emerson Schroer Jan 2015

“Always A Blank Page For Each New Hand That Approaches”: The Graphic Novel As Bildungsroman, Emerson Schroer

Theses & ETDs

The graphic novel, as a form, lends itself well to representing narratives that charter the formative years of the protagonist. The process of identity formation is a central theme in three graphic novels that function on a Bildungsroman model: Fun Home: A Family Tragicomic by Alison Bechdel, Le bleu est une couleur chaude by Julie Maroh, and Darkroom: A Memoir in Black & White by Lila Quintero Weaver. In Fun Home, the narrative focus is on gender and sexual identity; in Le bleu the focus is on sexual identity; and Darkroom focuses on racial identity. While the protagonists eventually claim …

Student Awareness Of New College Of Florida: Associations With Motivation, Success, And Progression, Jason Michael Ryan Thornton Jan 2015

Student Awareness Of New College Of Florida: Associations With Motivation, Success, And Progression, Jason Michael Ryan Thornton

Theses & ETDs

New College of Florida is a small, residential, honors, public liberal arts college in Sarasota, Florida, that uses a unique environment and system of learning contracts to progress students toward a Bachelor’s Degree. Troubling retention statistics from 2008 forward have prompted self-study to help determine causes and possible solutions. Any college loses students during their first year of attendance, but NCF has continued to lose students at every level, such that “New College loses approximately 20% of its students in their first year of enrollment, and loses a larger proportion of students—26%—over the next 5 years.” (NCF QEP 2008, 11). …

From Doing To Saying: Towards A Pragmatic Theory Of Language, Matthew Broerman Jan 2015

From Doing To Saying: Towards A Pragmatic Theory Of Language, Matthew Broerman

Theses & ETDs

Philosophical accounts of discursive practice often take one of two forms. One wants to say what is distinctive about discourse, and so highlight the line that separates us from our non-speaking brethren. The other wants to say what discourse shares with strategies used to prevail over the environment, and so see it as subject to desire, power, and violence. Each account motivates a choice of vocabulary, either logical or natural, and a form of critique, either rational or genealogical. 'The force of the better argument' either refers to the force generated by argument, or the force deployed in argument. We …

Deconstruction At The Foot Of The Mountain: Second And Third Wave Feminist Theater As Collective And Solo Peformance, Amy Bartolotta Jan 2015

Deconstruction At The Foot Of The Mountain: Second And Third Wave Feminist Theater As Collective And Solo Peformance, Amy Bartolotta

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the notion of feminist theater in two chapters. The first chapter looks at the theater collective At the Foot of the Mountain as representative of second wave or cultural feminist theater in the United States. Through a collaborative working method and aesthetic vision informed by feminism, At the Foot of the Mountain strove to create theater as part of a uniquely “female culture.” The second chapter presents an understanding of feminist theater in response to the essentializing tendencies of cultural feminism. That is, if a collective structure represents the universalized sisterhood of cultural feminist theater, solo performance …

The “Foreign Factor” In Shaping The Autonomy Issue Between The Chinese Government And Its Autonomous Regions, Benjamin Normand Jan 2015

The “Foreign Factor” In Shaping The Autonomy Issue Between The Chinese Government And Its Autonomous Regions, Benjamin Normand

Theses & ETDs

This thesis examines the importance of what I call the “foreign factor” in the Chinese Government’s issue with its Ethnic Minority Autonomous Regions, mostly of the Tibetans, Uyghurs and Mongols. By the “foreign factor,” I loosely refer to states, groups or individuals residing outside of the PRC’s border whose interactions with the Chinese government and/or minority regions had or has significant impact on the relationship of the two sides, specifically concerning the issue of autonomy. Few scholars have given enough attention to the effects of foreign influences on this issue. This thesis traces these “foreign factors” from the Qing dynasty …

Ceramics And Glass Beads As Symbolic Mixed Media In Colonial Native North America, Gregory A. Waselkov, David W. Morgan, Billie Coleman Jan 2015

Ceramics And Glass Beads As Symbolic Mixed Media In Colonial Native North America, Gregory A. Waselkov, David W. Morgan, Billie Coleman

BEADS: Journal of the Society of Bead Researchers

During the 17th and 18th centuries, Native Americans rarely adorned ceramic objects with glass beads, despite the millions of beads introduced by Europeans through trade. Bead-decorated ceramics have been reported from only nine sites in North America, perhaps due to a tendency for archaeologists to overlook or misclassify bead-inlaid pottery. The 40 artifacts represent widely divergent ethnic groups separated from each other culturally, as well as by great distances in space and time. Yet they display a remarkable consistency in the pattern of bead arrangement and use of color. Colored glass beads stand in for human eyes in effigy smoking …

From Goal-Striving To "Right Intention": A Grounded Theory Analysis Of Interviews With Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Participants, Julia Field Jan 2015

From Goal-Striving To "Right Intention": A Grounded Theory Analysis Of Interviews With Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction Participants, Julia Field

Undergraduate Review

Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction (MBSR) helps people to manage stress reactivity through contemplative practices such as meditation. The creator of the program, Kabat-Zinn, (1994) defines mindfulness as “…paying attention in a particular way; on purpose, in the present moment, and nonjudgmentally” (p. 4). Shapiro et al. (2006) clarified this definition as consisting of three mechanisms of mindfulness. In particular, their mechanism “intention” captures Kabat-Zinn’s phrase “on purpose.” Historically, mindfulness practices were intended to cultivate compassion and enlightenment; thus, these should be included in a psychological model of mindfulness (Shapiro & Schwartz, 2000). In keeping with their approach, this project explored the …

Cost Effectiveness Of A Mail-Delivered Individually Tailored Physical Activity Intervention For Latinas Vs. A Mailed Contact Control, Britta Larsen, Todd Gilmer, Dori Pekmezi, Melissa A. Napolitano, Bess H. Marcus

Prevention and Community Health Faculty Publications

Background

Physical inactivity is high in Latinas, as are chronic health conditions. There is a need for physical activity (PA) interventions that are not only effective but have potential for cost-effective widespread dissemination. The purpose of this paper was to assess the costs and cost effectiveness of a Spanish-language print-based mail-delivered PA intervention that was linguistically and culturally adapted for Latinas.

Methods

Adult Latinas (N = 266) were randomly assigned to receive mail-delivered individually tailored intervention materials or wellness information mailed on the same schedule (control). PA was assessed at baseline, six months (post-intervention) and 12 months (maintenance phase) …

Elderspeak And Identity Subversion: A Leadership Challenge In Elder Services, Patty Lou Crawford Jan 2015

Elderspeak And Identity Subversion: A Leadership Challenge In Elder Services, Patty Lou Crawford

Theses and Graduate Projects

Using a cross-disciplinary approach, this paper provides an important connection between elderspeak and identity subversion. Elderspeak, sometimes referred to as secondary baby talk, is a modified speech pattern marked by increased volume, simplified syntax, diminutives, collective pronouns, and terms of endearment. It subverts identity by negating ltfe experience and the individuality of an elder. Research has found that elderspeak can lead to a diminished sense of self, yet it is a significant part of the speech environment for elders in institutions that are designed to provide care. For leadership in the growing field of elder services the use of elderspeak …

Theses and Graduate Projects

The purpose of this qualitative study was to better understand how special education teams are making decisions regarding ruling out language proficiency when considering English Learners for a Specific Learning Disability (SLD) evaluation. This information was obtained through the perspectives of multi-categorical special education teachers. Data was collected through interviews with seven teachers from five different elementary schools. Five themes emerged from the data: (a) Let's start with Interventions (Tier 2), (b) Next let's figure out what is going on (Pre-referral team), (c) Who can we rely on to help us? (Trust of team members), (d) What can we use …

Teacher Perspectives On Reading Instruction In The Primary Grades, Emily K. Crook Jan 2015

Teacher Perspectives On Reading Instruction In The Primary Grades, Emily K. Crook

Theses and Graduate Projects

Research shows that teachers have both a passion and desire to teach reading feel conflicted by their pedagogical education, the district in which they teach, and government policies. Research suggests political agendas drive reading programs, reading curriculum, and teacher evaluations. The objective of this qualitative action research paper is to gain insight into primary grade teachers' perspectives on their reading instruction. The teacher participants in the study feel ready and eager to teach reading. However, they routinely feel they are not supported by their individual school district, including the state and local governments, to teach reading effectively. The data collected …

Why Do I Fall For The Elf, When I Am No Orc Myself? The Implications Of Virtual Avatars In Digital Communication, Sercan Sengun Jan 2015

Why Do I Fall For The Elf, When I Am No Orc Myself? The Implications Of Virtual Avatars In Digital Communication, Sercan Sengun

Faculty Publications – Creative Technologies

Various recent research on online avatars debated their authenticity in terms of representing the individuals that manage them. Seemingly users would construct an enhanced or idealized presence of themselves online, yet fail to realize that others also do so when seeking information of other users through their avatars. This phenomenon becomes even more curious inside online video game spaces, since video game avatars are already expected to be unrelated with their players but are still seen as sources of information about them. This study approaches the issue as a communication problem and tries to explain the process through Berger’s Uncertainty …
