Spatial Transgressions, Anxiety, And The Discourse Of Pussy Riot's "Punk Prayer, Katherine Schroeder
Spatial Transgressions, Anxiety, And The Discourse Of Pussy Riot's "Punk Prayer, Katherine Schroeder
Claremont-UC Undergraduate Research Conference on the European Union
The 2012 performance of Pussy Riot’s “Punk Prayer” in the Cathedral of Christ the Savior in Moscow, their subsequent release of an extended and edited video, and their ultimate arrest for committing “hooliganism” generated a large amount of interest both within Russia and on an international scale. While Western accounts and analyses were marked by their tendency to frame the political content, Russian responses were framed by references to tradition and history. Significantly, there was disagreement amongst the latter with regard to the activist value of Pussy Riot. I argue that this ambiguity arises from a profound socio-spatial anxiety that …

What Command Syntax Tells Us About Book Of Mormon Authorship, Stanford Carmack
What Command Syntax Tells Us About Book Of Mormon Authorship, Stanford Carmack
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The variety of command syntax found in the Book of Mormon is very different from what is seen in the King James Bible. Yet it is sophisticated and principled, evincing Early Modern English linguistic competence. Interestingly, the syntactic match between the 1829 text and a prominent text from the late 15th century is surprisingly good. All the evidence indicates that Joseph Smith would not have produced the structures found in the text using the King James Bible as a model, nor from his own language. The overall usage profile of command syntax seen in the Book of Mormon strongly supports …
Tyndale Versus More In The Book Of Mormon, Royal Skousen
Tyndale Versus More In The Book Of Mormon, Royal Skousen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In 1526 William Tyndale’s English-language The New Testa ment started showing up in England, printed in the Low Lands and smuggled into England because it was an illegal book. It represented an unapproved translation of the scriptures into the English language. In theory, a translation would have been allowed if the Church had approved it in advance. In reality, the Church was not interested in any translation of the scriptures since that would allow lay readers to interpret the scriptures on their own and to come to different conclusions regarding Church practices and doctrine. Moreover, scripture formed a fundamental role …
“Most Desirable Above All Things”: Onomastic Play On Mary And Mormon In The Book Of Mormon, Matthew L. Bowen
“Most Desirable Above All Things”: Onomastic Play On Mary And Mormon In The Book Of Mormon, Matthew L. Bowen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The names Mary and Mormon most plausibly derive from the Egyptian word mr(i), “love, desire, [or] wish.” Mary denotes “beloved [i.e., of deity]” and is thus conceptually connected with divine love, while Mormon evidently denotes “desire/love is enduring.” The text of the Book of Mormon manifests authorial awareness of the meanings of both names, playing on them in multiple instances. Upon seeing Mary (“the mother of God,” 1 Nephi 11:18, critical text) bearing the infant Messiah in her arms in vision, Nephi, who already knew that God “loveth his children,” came to understand that the meaning of the fruit-bearing tree …
The Implications Of Past-Tense Syntax In The Book Of Mormon, Stanford Carmack
The Implications Of Past-Tense Syntax In The Book Of Mormon, Stanford Carmack
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In the middle of the 16th century there was a short-lived surge in the use of the auxiliary did to express the affirmative past tense in English, as in Moroni «did arrive» with his army to the land of Bountiful (Alma 52:18). The 1829 Book of Mormon contains nearly 2,000 instances of this particular syntax, using it 27% of the time in past-tense contexts. The 1611 King James Bible — which borrowed heavily from Tyndale’s biblical translations of the 1520s and ’30s — employs this syntax less than 2% of the time. While the Book of Mormon’s rate is significantly …
Restoring The Original Text Of The Book Of Mormon, Royal Shousen
Restoring The Original Text Of The Book Of Mormon, Royal Shousen
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The Book of Mormon Critical Text Project, under the editorship of Royal Skousen, began in 1988 and is now nearing completion. In 2001, facsimile transcripts of the two Book of Mormon manuscripts (volumes 1 and 2 of the critical text) were published by the Foundation for Ancient Research and Mormon Studies (FARMS). From 2004 to 2009 the six books of volume 4 of the critical text, Analysis of Textual Variants of the Book of Mormon, were published, also by FARMS. Parts 1 and 2 of volume 3 of the critical text, The History of the Text of the Book of …
Say Now Shibboleth, Or Maybe Cumorah, Loren Blake Spendlove
Say Now Shibboleth, Or Maybe Cumorah, Loren Blake Spendlove
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
The Deseret Alphabet represents a bold but failed attempt by 19th century LDS Church leaders to revolutionize English language orthography. As 21st century members of the LDS Church, we can benefit from this less than successful experiment by studying the 1869 Deseret Alphabet Book of Mormon and learning how early church members most likely pronounced Book of Mormon names.
Out Of Control: The Psychological Benefits Of Creative Exercises For Different Levels Of Situational Control, Fusha Del Mar Mitchell
Out Of Control: The Psychological Benefits Of Creative Exercises For Different Levels Of Situational Control, Fusha Del Mar Mitchell
Theses & ETDs
The goal of this research was to examine how different creative exercises benefit people in situations involving low versus high control. To do this, participants were assigned to either a low control situation (in which they did not have many choices for their behavior) or a high control situation (in which they did have many choices for their behavior). Participants then completed either an art-focused creative exercise or a writing-focused creative exercise. Participants completed measures of psychological well-being before and after the creative exercise. Anxiety and depression measures both reduced slightly overall from pre-test to post-test. This is in the …
Played To The Bone: Skeletal Trauma, Assumptions Of Warfare, And An Apalachee Ballgame In Spanish La Florida, Nancy Shipley
Played To The Bone: Skeletal Trauma, Assumptions Of Warfare, And An Apalachee Ballgame In Spanish La Florida, Nancy Shipley
Theses & ETDs
In the study of violence, warfare and conflict are often seen as inherent among certain groups of people. This is especially true for colonial populations wherein the image of the snarling native is preserved so vividly from popular media. In this thesis, I attempt to combat those views by using bioarchaeology to show that trauma in the archaeological record is not always caused by warfare. In the first chapter I discuss a meaning of violence and its use in social context. In the second chapter, I present an overview of bioarchaeology in Spanish La Florida. The third chapter deals with …
The Theory Of Decay As A Musical Technique, Dylan Burchett
The Theory Of Decay As A Musical Technique, Dylan Burchett
Theses & ETDs
My thesis investigates how decay over time affects the life cycle of a musical work and, subsequently, how to incorporate this decay into the musical work. This investigation of decay in music includes investigating decay as a compositional element, how decay influences the identity of an interactive musical work, and how decay in music affects the identities of its environment, audience, and performers and vice versa. I sought to investigate these various questions through a 12-oscillator photosensitive drone synthesizer that I constructed, which played suspended notes whose pitch and speed are altered based on light values it receives. Audience members …

Through The Kaleidoscope Andy Warhol’S Exploding Plastic Inevitable, Postmodern Art And The Rise Of New Media, Jacqueline G. Fockler
Theses & ETDs
Andy Warhol’s remarkable work, the Exploding Plastic Inevitable Show (EPI), serves as an insight into the complex nature of postmodern art. It is a recursive guide, a mise en abyme, of present-day multi-media aesthetics. The show was a progenitor of postmodernist art-production and theory, and explored emerging technology’s role in mediating the sensory and intellectual relationship between art and audience. The EPI show is a conceptual schematic; through its aesthetic juxtapositions it expresses quite elegantly manifold ideas of the meaning of art, life, and culture. I prefer to see the piece as every bit the double entendre – it is …
Developing The New College Soundmap: Toward A Local Listening Community, Sarah Elizabeth Janeway Amos
Developing The New College Soundmap: Toward A Local Listening Community, Sarah Elizabeth Janeway Amos
Theses & ETDs
This text is an exegesis written in accompaniment to the development of the New College Soundmap. The origin and development of soundmap practice and the emergence and development of related environmental sound practices are detailed. The exegesis concludes with an exposition of the development of the New College Soundmap itself. Soundmap practice emerged from the sonic explorations of the World Soundscape Project, who coming out of Simon Fraser University of Burnaby, British Columbia, pioneered the first soundmaps in the early 1970s. From its origins soundmap practice has spread and developed into its current form as a new media practice. This …
Self-Compassion In Lgbtqia+ Individuals, Constantine Dhonau
Self-Compassion In Lgbtqia+ Individuals, Constantine Dhonau
Theses & ETDs
Self-compassion is a growing area of study which has yet to be applied to LGBTQIA+ individuals. The current study seeks to fill this gap in knowledge by examining the relationships between LGBTQIA+ individuals’ levels of self-compassion, how they write about negative experiences based on their sexual and/or gender identity, and their level of involvement in supportive communities. Participants wrote narrative responses about their first and most recent negative experiences disclosing their LGBTQIA+ identities to others, followed by the Self-Compassion Scale, which is centered on being kind to oneself in instances of failure, perceiving one’s experiences as part of the larger …
Selected Essays Of Rosario Castellanos Annotated Translations And Analysis Visions For Women In Community, Sarah Yates Gibson
Selected Essays Of Rosario Castellanos Annotated Translations And Analysis Visions For Women In Community, Sarah Yates Gibson
Theses & ETDs
In this project I have produced annotated translations of seven essays by Rosario Castellanos from the section “Cosas de Mujeres” of the anthology of her periodical articles, El Uso de la palabra. Because of the colloquial appeals in these feminist essays, the annotated translations seek to bridge the gap in context of publication between Castellanos’s originally-intended audience of the Mexico City public in the 1960s and ‘70s to a contemporary English-speaking audience. The essays, previously untranslated, are indicative of Castellanos’s thoughts on women’s rights internationally and of her layered opinions on current events during her life. Rosario Castellanos wove a …
Dehumanization In Varlam Shalamov’S Kolyma Tales, Alan Sachnowski
Dehumanization In Varlam Shalamov’S Kolyma Tales, Alan Sachnowski
Theses & ETDs
This thesis seeks to interpret Varlam Shalamov’s cycle of short stories Kolyma Tales through the unifying theme of dehumanization. Chapter one examines historic and artistic interpretations of Shalamov’s work in order to substantiate the methodology used in interpreting the tales with the notion of dehumanization. The chapter then supplies an analysis of “Lend-Lease” in order to demonstrate the methodology. Chapter two analyzes “Sententious” by tracking the narrator’s body in relation to his surroundings in a story of unusually long duration relative to the quick moments captured in other tales. The story is emblematic of a reversal of dehumanization to the …
Life Through The Lens Of Art: Using The Apollonian And Dionysian To Consider The Ideal Human Life, Dylan Gygax
Life Through The Lens Of Art: Using The Apollonian And Dionysian To Consider The Ideal Human Life, Dylan Gygax
Theses & ETDs
This thesis applies the conception of the Apollonian and the Dionysian, developed by Friedrich Nietzsche in The Birth of Tragedy, to the ways in which an individual interacts with her surrounding environment. Working off the notion that for Nietzsche “life is art,” I use the Apollonian and Dionysian to approach the question of the ideal human life. In Chapter One, I argue that the manifestation of the Apollonian in the individual in her interaction with the universe is best understood as the individual individuating and constructing the universe around her through knowledge. In Chapter Two, I consider the Apollonian will …
Top Girls And The Bottom Line: Defining And Disrupting Binary Oppositions In Caryl Churchill's Top Girls, Morgan Mann
Top Girls And The Bottom Line: Defining And Disrupting Binary Oppositions In Caryl Churchill's Top Girls, Morgan Mann
Theses & ETDs
This thesis analyzes and interprets Caryl Churchill's momentous play, Top Girls. It follows the story of Marlene, a 1980s business woman, and her biological daughter Angie, who has been given to the care of Marlene's sister so she could pursue a career. For three decades, the critical literature surrounding the play has been dominated by binary oppositions. Most notable are the binaries between family & career and socialism & capitalism. These binaries serve as method by which Marlene constructs herself; she lies on the career and capitalism side of the binary and that's that. However, to see Marlene as she …
From Religious Life To The Death Of Politics: The Biopolitical Theology Of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, Connor Manning Wells
From Religious Life To The Death Of Politics: The Biopolitical Theology Of Rabbi Ovadia Yosef, Connor Manning Wells
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores the writings of Rabbi Ovadiah Yosef, former Chief Sephardic Rabbi of Israel. It addresses the political implications of his application of Jewish Law to the institutions of the State of Israel. In light of the history Sephardic experience in Israel and the rise of Rabbi Yosef’s political party, Shas, I ask what political narrative Rabbi Yosef’s theology has to offer for a political Judaism other than Zionism. I intellectually engage the implications of Rabbi Yosef’s political theology from the standpoint of post-‐modern leftist political theory. I look to the theoretical work of Giorgio Agamben, who provides an …
Truth, Lies And Literature: An Examination Of Representations Of Power In Mario Vargas Llosa’S The Feast Of The Goat, Claude Chianesse
Truth, Lies And Literature: An Examination Of Representations Of Power In Mario Vargas Llosa’S The Feast Of The Goat, Claude Chianesse
Theses & ETDs
The Feast of the Goat is a novelistic depiction of the lasting and detrimental effects that one particular individual, in this case the dictator Rafael Leonidas Trujillo, has on the people of the Dominican Republic. The novel creates a portrayal of this individual through which we can see the effects of corruption on his own mind and the unprecedented consequences of his power. With this novel we take a close look into the mind of power and examine the ways in which Trujillo constructed himself up to be an essential aspect of Dominican public and private life virtually without any …
Appropriating “I”: Je Tsong-Kha-Pa’S Philosophy Of Essenceless Continuity And The Practice Of Ceasing Death, Intermediate State, And Rebirth In Highest Yoga Tantra, Devin Enoilia Kruger
Appropriating “I”: Je Tsong-Kha-Pa’S Philosophy Of Essenceless Continuity And The Practice Of Ceasing Death, Intermediate State, And Rebirth In Highest Yoga Tantra, Devin Enoilia Kruger
Theses & ETDs
This study confronts the apparent contradiction in the Madhyamika Buddhist interpretation of emptiness, karma, and rebirth. I explore Thupten Jinpa’s reading of Je Tsong-kha-pa’s philosophy of self, personal identity, and continuity, to determine the strength of this seeming incongruity. The Buddhist tradition also provides an intricate account of complicated processes that detail an individual’s death, transmigration, and rebirth. I present these workings as conceptualized and practiced in Highest Yoga Tantra, examining the role of the selfless person throughout. Finally, I discuss the relationship between Tsong-kha-pa’s thought on selfless continuity and the practices involved in Highest Yoga Tantra.
The Three Horsemen Of The Epistemic Apocalypse: Examining Gender In Philosophy Through Philosophical And Psychological Methods, Olivia Levinson
The Three Horsemen Of The Epistemic Apocalypse: Examining Gender In Philosophy Through Philosophical And Psychological Methods, Olivia Levinson
Theses & ETDs
There is a significant gender divide in philosophy such that the vast majority of published authors and those holding professional positions are male. This project looks at the aforementioned gender disparity by first discussing three forms of Epistemic Injustice. Testimonial Injustice occurs when an individual’s statements and knowledge claims are rejected due to the speaker’s social categories rather than merit or expertise. Hermeneutical Injustice happens when people in marginalized groups are denied the tools necessary to understand experiences that they are having. Inquisitory Injustice occurs when an individual is denied participatory power in a discourse or process of inquiry, thereby …
QʷidiččaʔA·Tx̌ / Makah: Cultural Self-Representation And The Struggle For Sovereignty, Hannah Gilbert
QʷidiččaʔA·Tx̌ / Makah: Cultural Self-Representation And The Struggle For Sovereignty, Hannah Gilbert
Theses & ETDs
The Makah, an American Indian tribe who live on the tip of the Olympic Peninsula, are trying to revive their treaty-protected traditional whaling practice which was, in past years, halted due to endangered populations. Now that the gray whale stock has recovered, the Makah are embroiled in a controversy over Treaty Rights, environmental protection, and heritage. Through the Makah Cultural and Research Center (MCRC) exhibit, public speaking, interpretation, and media coverage, different Makah people represent their culture in order to forward self-determination and human rights goals. This thesis is the result of fieldwork observation at the MCRC. I analyze how …
The Construct Of The Fantastic: Identifying Science Fiction And Fantasy And A Creative Approach To Genre Construction, Tania Russell
The Construct Of The Fantastic: Identifying Science Fiction And Fantasy And A Creative Approach To Genre Construction, Tania Russell
Theses & ETDs
The initial purpose of this thesis was to provide a definition for the genres fantasy and science fiction, and to understand the ways in which these genres differ. I discovered that it is best to view these genres as “fuzzy sets,” meaning that science fiction and fantasy exist as a spectrum of fundamental elements that are commonly manifested in literary works of either kind. In this thesis, I analyze J.R.R. Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings and Frank Herbert’s Dune as the most successful literary examples of how the fundamental elements of science fiction and fantasy are best utilized. In my …
Woody Guthrie As Country Musician, Francis Christopher Alibro
Woody Guthrie As Country Musician, Francis Christopher Alibro
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores the popular history of folk revivalist Woody Guthrie, and the implications of his designated role as a forefather to the Urban Folk Revival in Greenwich Village, New York. By exploring distinctions between concepts of “folk” and “country” music, this work looks back in time, examining the vast repertoire of early country music that influenced Woody Guthrie. I approach this through various angles, such as the historical origin and context of these songs, linguistic analysis, and stylistic analysis. Genre studies by Karl Hagstrom Miller and linguistic anthropological perspective by Aaron Fox are two such perspectives that I incorporate …
Framed Up: Meaning-Making And Collective Identity In Social Movements, Anne Mccabe
Framed Up: Meaning-Making And Collective Identity In Social Movements, Anne Mccabe
Theses & ETDs
In this thesis, I worked with three separate social movements located within Florida. The key research question is: how do social movements utilize cultural resources and symbols and how does this affect whether a movement will succeed or fail? In order to address this question, I looked at how three different movements used frames and how their collective identity both informed and was informed by the symbolic work employed by these movements. By using evidence from multiple sources (participant observation, interviews with participants and organizers, and websites) I analyze the signifying work these movements engaged in.
Reading Of/Writing Through Copy/Paste: An Examination And Practice Of Appropriative Poetry, Taylor Barton
Reading Of/Writing Through Copy/Paste: An Examination And Practice Of Appropriative Poetry, Taylor Barton
Theses & ETDs
This senior project begins with a chronological and theoretical examination of the development of appropriative tactics in poetry and literature over approximately the past one hundred years. Following is a collection of original poetry composed by appropriative means. Following each poem is an examination of the process that brought it about, and a consideration of its theoretical and conceptual implications. I borrowed every word of each poem from preexisting material, reformatted and re-contextualized them, and made them into new works, calling into question traditional notions of authorship, creativity, and originality. I attempted to incorporate experimental, conceptual, procedural appropriation with the …
No Future In “Progress” The Embodiment Of Illegality Among Migrants In Rabat, Morocco, Zachary Natale
No Future In “Progress” The Embodiment Of Illegality Among Migrants In Rabat, Morocco, Zachary Natale
Theses & ETDs
This thesis explores experiences of "illegality in a community of irregular sub- Saharan migrants in Takadoum, a quarter of Rabat, Morocco. Since the early 2000s, increased migration flow from sub-Saharan Africa to the European Union and Europe's exertion of extraterritorial power over its southern Mediterranean neighbors have turned Morocco into a place of immigration rather than a point of transit. Morocco's increasingly punitive measures against irregular migration have "criminalized" migrants, turning them into social pariahs in popular discourse. Through ethnography, I explore the embodied expressions of abjection through the theoretical lens of biopower, or sovereign power over life. First, I …
A Posthumanist Conception Of Consent, M. Gavin Dietrich
A Posthumanist Conception Of Consent, M. Gavin Dietrich
Theses & ETDs
This thesis hopes to provide a framework for a more descriptive, empowering, conception of consent as analyzed through perspectives opened by New Materialist thought. New Materialism provides a valuable lens from which to analyze consent in that it promises to help define the mechanics of consenting, but further it provides a more comprehensive descriptive account of consent. I approach my task by first situating and developing a recognizably New Materialist Framework. I then take up a prominent consent framework in relation to a BDSM discourse, ultimately showing that a “liberal” version of it excludes a large community of people who …
Spicy Curry And Racist Salad: Representations Of India And Indian Americans In U.S. Sitcoms, Kyna Patel
Spicy Curry And Racist Salad: Representations Of India And Indian Americans In U.S. Sitcoms, Kyna Patel
Theses & ETDs
This thesis examines the origins of specific stereotypes and preconceived notions of India and people of Indian descent in the United States and how they are manifested today in American sitcoms. I analyze how some Indian and Indian American characters’ identities are more strongly informed by race, ethnicity, and nationality, which can play a role in perpetuating stereotypes. By looking at story arcs, character development, jokes, and dialogues, I show how varied or homogenous the characters are in the depictions of their identities and to what extent these identities are integral to the series’ comedy.
