Dialogic Discourse In Linguistically Diverse Elementary Mathematics Classes: Lessons Learned From Dual Language Classrooms, Mary Truxaw
NERA Conference Proceedings 2015
This research investigated discourse in linguistically diverse elementary mathematics classrooms on a continuum from univocal (transmitting meaning) to dialogic (dialogue to construct meaning). Although analysis revealed predominantly univocal discourse in these classrooms, it also uncovered verbal moves and promising practices for supporting English learners with dialogic discourse and mathematical understanding.

What Is The Nature Of Appalachian Identity?, Elizabeth Trout
What Is The Nature Of Appalachian Identity?, Elizabeth Trout
Communication Studies Student Scholarship
Personal identity affects the way one views themselves, and the world around them. This in turn affects the way that they interact with others, and how they communicate. The Appalachian region in the United States impresses on its people a strong, undeniable identity that sets them apart from others. This identity is influenced by region and sense of place, race and language. The Appalachian identity is unique and complex in nature.

The primary purpose of this quantitative study was to determine if there is a relationship between fatherly involvement in students' lives and select factors of student descriptors and school success. Specifically, the study sought to discover if there is a significant relationship between fatherlessness and student success and if there is a significant relationship between fatherlessness and select student descriptors. Descriptive statistics and linear regression were used to interpret and analyze the data for the study. There were 1,780 respondents who participated in the study. Respondents included seniors from rural, suburban, and urban public schools. In conducting this study, the …
A Narrative Review Of The Intervention Techniques For Childhood Apraxia Of Speech, Katherine Mahoney
A Narrative Review Of The Intervention Techniques For Childhood Apraxia Of Speech, Katherine Mahoney
Undergraduate Review
Childhood apraxia of speech (CAS) is a speech disorder that affects a child’s ability to communicate verbally. Various intervention approaches have been suggested to treat CAS; however, there is no one standard intervention approach currently available to clinicians. In any clinical profession, an intervention should be selected in accordance to the principles of evidence-based practice (EBP) which incorporates high quality evidence, clinical expertise, and client/stakeholder values in the decision-making processes. The purpose of this narrative review is to provide a comprehensive examination of the supporting evidence for intervention approaches for CAS in the published peer-reviewed literature. The data from this …
Code-Switching In Portuguese Print Media Of Brazilian Immigrant Communities In Massachusetts, Stephanie S. Castellarin
Code-Switching In Portuguese Print Media Of Brazilian Immigrant Communities In Massachusetts, Stephanie S. Castellarin
Undergraduate Review
This study focuses on the phenomenon of code-switching (CS) which is the alternating use of two or more languages in written or spoken form (Poplack 1980). These instances of CS are collected from Brazilian Portuguese print media published by immigrant communities in Massachusetts. Print material in Brazilian Portuguese was gathered from townships and cities in the South Shore of Massachusetts, which have been documented as having large Portuguese-speaking populations. The data were analyzed by tabulating orthographic errors, examples of code-switching, false cognates and language anomalies. The results were compared to those found in Poplack (1980), Gardner-Chloros (2009), and Hill (1993), …

Parody In Trademark Law: Dumb Starbucks Makes Trademark Law Look Dumb, 14 J. Marshall Rev. Intell. Prop. L. 143 (2015), Deborah Kemp, Lynn Forsythe, Ida Jones
UIC Review of Intellectual Property Law
Comedian Nathan Fielder opened a coffee shop which looked like a Starbucks, but he put the word “dumb” in front of the Starbucks name. Fielder justified his behavior based on the argument that he had created a parody of Starbucks. This article explores when a parody of a trademark may be entitled to protection under the First Amendment. If so, what are the limits of this protection, especially when a trademark holder argues that the parody is diluting his or her trademark by either blurring or tarnishment? The article analyzes federal statutes and judicial decisions. It concludes with recommendations to …

Despite the linguistic policies that have attempted to displace Quechua with Spanish and western culture, the use of Quechua in Ecuador has not been extinguished –especially among indigenous communities. Moreover, Quechua today is recognized as one of the languages of a multicultural society and the Spanish that is spoken in this country contains substrates that attest the deep-seatedness of Quechua. This paper consequently explores the presence of Quechua words in phraseological units in Ecuadorean Spanish as evidence of the indigenous substrate. Although Ecuadorean Quechua does no enjoy the same prestige that Spanish relishes, the influence of the Quechua substrate serves …

Building Energy Index And Student’S Perceived Performance In Public University Buildings, S.N.N. Syed Yahya, A.R.M. Ariffin, M.A. Ismail
Research Publications (2011 to 2015)
Numerous studies have shown that students’ learning experience is closely associated with the physical comfort level of their teaching and learning environment. The different strategies or allocation of air-conditioning, mechanical ventilation (ACMV) and lighting systems contribute greatly to the energy performances in the buildings. This study explores the relationship between electricity consumption of academic buildings of a public university in an urban context and its student’s perceived performance. It seeks to find the answer patterns from unsuspected subjects; whether there is a difference from a lower energy-use building then one of a higher energy-use building. To achieve the objective, the …

Since the 11th of September, 2001, the media and American public have been obsessed by all things Islamic and Middle Eastern, as the war on terrorism has been essentially engaged against various countries and peoples believed to be terrorists, including Afghanistan. Since America’s declaration of war on terrorism, people have been flocking to bookstores to find and read up on topics like Islam, terrorism, the conflict in the Middle East, and more. While there have been many documentaries published on the Taliban, Osama Bin Laden, and women’s rights in the region, there were still no works of fiction in English …

"Does Jesus Want Us To Be Poor?" Student Perspectives Of The Religious Program At A Cristo Rey Network School, Ursula Aldana
School of Education Faculty Research
The structure of Catholic schools improves achievement by providing multiple opportunities for face-to-face interaction, the development of meaningful relationships between students, teachers, and other members of the school community, and a shared set of beliefs among all school members (Bryk, Lee, & Holland, 1993). Despite a substantiating body of research for this assertion, few empirical studies exist on how the religious program might impact the intrapersonal and interpersonal development of students. The Cristo Rey Network (CRN) of schools was developed in response to the material realities of students and families living in Chicago (Kearney, 2006). The leaders of the network, …

The Historical Evolution Of The German Present Perfect From The Perspective Of Complexity Theory And Emergent Grammar, Valentina Concu
The Historical Evolution Of The German Present Perfect From The Perspective Of Complexity Theory And Emergent Grammar, Valentina Concu
Open Access Theses
The purpose of this study is to understand the meaning of the present perfect in Modern German and also, to trace its development in the early stages of German. Therefore, the synchronic analysis, in which I analyze articles from a famous German magazine, is combined with the diachronic study of the present perfect attestations in Old High German and Middle High German. This study is conducted within a Complexity-Theory and Emergent Grammar approach in which languages are viewed as dynamic system that changes over time, and grammar is seen as an epiphenomenon and a result of communicative needs among speakers.
The Dictionaries In Which We Learn To Think, Timothy Flanagan Dr.
The Dictionaries In Which We Learn To Think, Timothy Flanagan Dr.
Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles
Taking its title from the discussion of a ‘new Meno’ to be found in Difference and Repetition, through an examination of the link between learning and thinking set out across Deleuze's work this paper charts the important sense in which philosophical thought is characterised by an apprenticeship. The claim is that just as certain aesthetic and biological processes involve inscrutable and non-resembling elements that cannot be known in advance, the experience of learning is one oriented by unforseen encounters. With a view to a peculiarly heuristic use of dictionaries in the case of language learning, the paper shows how …

European Identity And Other Mysteries - Seeking Out The Hidden Source Of Unity For A Troubled Polity, P Jimenez
Philosophy Papers and Journal Articles
The economic crisis in Europe exposes the European Union’s (EU) political fragility. How a polity made of very different states can live up to the motto “Europe united in diversity” is difficult to envisage in practice. In this paper I attempt an “exegesis”—a critical explanation or interpretation of a series of published pieces (“the Series”) which explores, first of all, if European unity (and what kind) is desirable at all. Second, it presents a methodology running throughout the Series —analogical hermeneutics—to approach the problem of unity. Third, it conceptualises the source of unity as political identity (and solidarity). Fourth, it …

John L. Sorenson’S Complete Legacy: Reviewing Mormon’S Codex, Brant A. Gardner, Mark Alan Wright
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
Mormon’s Codex: An Ancient American Book is unquestionably a monument to an impressive career defending, defining, and explaining the Book of Mormon. John L. Sorenson has been for the New World setting of the Book of Mormon what Hugh Nibley was for the Old World setting. From his earliest 1952 publications using anthropology and geography to defend the Book of Mormon to the 2013 publication of Mormon’s Codex, Sorenson has been the dominant force in shaping scholarly discussions about the Book of Mormon in its New World setting.1 With an impressive 714 pages of text with footnotes, Mormon’s Codex is …

Why The Oxford English Dictionary (And Not Webster’S 1828), Stanford Carmack
Interpreter: A Journal of Latter-day Saint Faith and Scholarship
In order to properly consider possible meaning in the Book of Mormon (BofM), we must use the Oxford English Dictionary (OED). Royal Skousen opened the door to this approach,1 but unfortunately many have resisted accepting it as valid or have not understood the advantages inherent in it. The usual method of consulting Webster’s 1828 American Dictionary of the English Language has serious drawbacks. First, that approach is based on the incorrect assumption that the English language of the text is Joseph Smith’s own language or what he knew from reading the King James Bible (kjb). That incorrect assumption leads us …

Intercultural Sensitivity Scale (ISS) is the main assessment tool for measuring intercultural sensitivity as an affective component of intercultural communication competence. The ISS has been developed based on an American sample and therefore there is a need to check possibilities for its application in another cultural context. In this study, we tested whether the factor structure of the original scale is confirmed in a Serbian sample as well. The results show that the compatibility of factor structure is not satisfactory (x2/df = 3.38; CFI = .78; RMSEA = .07) and the application of the scale requires modification. …

Purpose: In this observational study, we examined the interactions of 16 young children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and their parents to investigate (a) differences in verbal responsiveness used by fathers and mothers in interactions with their children with ASD and (b) concurrent associations between the language skills of children with ASD and the verbal responsiveness of both fathers and mothers.
Method: Parent verbal responsiveness was coded from video recordings of naturalistic parent–child play sessions using interval-based coding. Child language skills were measured by the Preschool Language Scale–Fourth Edition (Zimmerman, Steiner, & Pond, 2002).

The purpose of this single case study was to understand the perceptions of Latino Spanish-speaking English learners on the efficacy of developmental education services at a western United States community college. Research questions focused on how the developmental education services contributed to the successful completion of the child development practicum for Latino Spanish-speaking English learners. The primary data collection method was in-depth individual interviews of a purposeful sample of nine successful students. Findings indicated that participants relied on Spanish instruction for comprehensible context, but needed consistent education support services and information from a culturally responsive institution in a language they …

The fatherhood role is influenced by culture, religion, social factors, and economic norms. In Jamaica pregnancy is often treated as a female only event. Women are left to visit their clinics alone and have support from female family members. The man’s focus is providing financial support. In the past fathers were subjected to migrant labor and left their families for long periods. This tradition remained even when they were not working. Today, men are taking on more of the role of fatherhood, becoming involved and supportive and experiencing the privilege of pregnancy though of a secondary nature through their partner’s …
