Cambodian Family-School Partnership: Toward An Evolving Theory, Peter Tan Keo Jan 2015

Cambodian Family-School Partnership: Toward An Evolving Theory, Peter Tan Keo

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

This article explores the current debate around family-school partnerships. Traditional family-school partnership theories do not account for the intended voices of Cambodian families. This article draws from existing research on Southeast Asian families more generally in order to develop a research-based, data-driven family-school partnership conceptual framework for Cambodian American families. It is believed that a pro-ethnic, voice-centric family-school partnership fosters an inclusive, supportive learning environment for Cambodian children. The logic undergirding that belief assumes that this partnership is likely to increase cultural awareness between critical home-school partners. At the very least, the proposed concept model serves as a theoretical building …

A Qualitative Examination Of The Psychosocial Adjustment Of Khmer Refugees In Three Massachusetts Communities, Leakhena Nou Jan 2015

A Qualitative Examination Of The Psychosocial Adjustment Of Khmer Refugees In Three Massachusetts Communities, Leakhena Nou

Journal of Southeast Asian American Education and Advancement

This paper uses a sociological stress process model to explore the Khmer adult refugees' experience in Massachusetts. The analysis is based on the responses of three focus groups in the Khmer communities of Lowell, Lynn, and Revere, Massachusetts. The focus groups provided an in-depth understanding of sources of stress, stress mediators, and psychosocial adjustment/adaptational patterns for Khmer refugees who had experienced the Cambodian genocide. Symptoms and reactions associated with underlying causes of mental health problems had culturally specific relevance to physical illness and mental health.

How A Secondary School As An Organization Defines And Embeds The Term College Readiness, Michele Critelli Jan 2015

How A Secondary School As An Organization Defines And Embeds The Term College Readiness, Michele Critelli

Theses and Dissertations

With the many reforms and initiatives regarding college readiness, understanding how organizations use rhetoric to determine and define what college readiness is and what it looks like can either reinforce dominant institutional structures and practices, or create new definitions and understanding leading to institutional change. Through a rhetorical framework (Alvesson, 1993), members of an organization are not only conformists but also strategic agents who through the use of rhetoric construct and shape knowledge and institutional life. A case study was conducted of one secondary high school that included administrators and teachers who work within the context of college readiness. Through …

The Paradox Of The Obamacare Decision: How Can The Federal Government Have Limited Unlimited Power?, Robert J. Pushaw Jr. Jan 2015

The Paradox Of The Obamacare Decision: How Can The Federal Government Have Limited Unlimited Power?, Robert J. Pushaw Jr.

Florida Law Review

National Federation of Independent Business v. Sebelius, the Supreme Court’s decision upholding the landmark Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA or “Obamacare”), sets forth the most important judicial examination of constitutional power since the New Deal era. The political and media frenzy over the Obamacare case has obscured its actual legal analysis and larger constitutional implications, which warrant more reflective study. This Article seeks to provide such a scholarly perspective.

The Trespass Fallacy In Patent Law, Adam Mossoff Jan 2015

The Trespass Fallacy In Patent Law, Adam Mossoff

Florida Law Review

The patent system is broken and in dire need of reform; so says the popular press, scholars, lawyers, judges, congresspersons, and even the President. One common complaint is that patents are now failing as property rights because their boundaries are not as clear as the fences that demarcate real estate—patent infringement is neither as determinate nor as efficient as trespass is for land. This Essay explains that this is a fallacious argument, suffering both empirical and logical failings. Empirically, there are no formal studies of trespass litigation rates; thus, complaints about the patent system’s indeterminacy are based solely on an …

Moving Toward A More Socially Just Classroom Through Teacher Preparation For Inclusion, Grace Blum, Megan Wilson, Yelena Patish

Catalyst: A Social Justice Forum

The current literature in teacher education for social justice fails to adequately address issues of disability within the equity discourse. In this paper, the authors advocate for a model of social justice teacher education that includes disability as part of the definition of marginalized groups by proposing the use of Response to Intervention (RTI) as a method for promoting inclusion into the social justice-oriented teacher preparation context.

Community Teachers And The Preparation Of Special Education Teachers: A Case Study, John Delport, Christopher Daikos Jan 2015

Community Teachers And The Preparation Of Special Education Teachers: A Case Study, John Delport, Christopher Daikos

Catalyst: A Social Justice Forum

The current context of special education classrooms across America is that of an increasing demographic complexity. There is a disproportionate representation of historically marginalized groups (HMGs) in special education that (re)emphasizes a disconnect between those students, their families, and schools. Coupled with a predominantly White middle-class teaching force not being prepared to effectively teach these students, it furthers the marginalization of HMG special education students. Using a feminist-standpoint theoretical framework, the authors put forward a rationale for special education teacher preparation programs to partner with community teachers working in community-based organizations (CBOs) that serve HMGs. The authors contend that this …

School of Health Professions

Background: Falls are common in people with multiple sclerosis (PwMS). Previous studies have generally included small samples and had varied methods. Objectives: The objectives of this paper are to compile fall rates across a broad range of ages and disease severity and to definitively assess the extent to which MS-associated and demographic factors influence fall rates. Methods: Individual data from studies in four countries that prospectively measured falls for three months were analyzed. We determined fall rates, prevalence of fallers (≥1 falls) and frequent fallers (≥2 falls), location and timing of falls, and fall-related demographic factors. Results: A total of …

The Rostrum Principle: Why The Boundaries Of The Public Forum Matter To Statutory Interpretation, Amy Widman Jan 2015

The Rostrum Principle: Why The Boundaries Of The Public Forum Matter To Statutory Interpretation, Amy Widman

Florida Law Review

This Article explores a normative proposal for statutory interpretation in light of this media-saturated age. The proposal, referred to in this Article as the Rostrum Principle, encourages the Court to interpret ambiguous terms in legislation with a presumption toward the way the legislation was “sold” to the public. This Article further explores the shifting public forum—away from the Congressional Record and formal legal frameworks to include cable news television, newspaper op-eds, and even Twitter. The explosion of popular and social media and politicians’ increasingly sophisticated use of these forms of communication goes far toward setting the debate regarding pending legislation. …

A Comparative Study: Intercultural Communication Experiences Of Students Attending Two-Year Versus Four-Year Universities, Sheryl L. Skibba Jan 2015

A Comparative Study: Intercultural Communication Experiences Of Students Attending Two-Year Versus Four-Year Universities, Sheryl L. Skibba

Communication & Leadership Dissertations and Theses

This thesis assumes that there are some prevalent differences in the intercultural communication experience of both those with a native English speaking background (NESB) and non-native (N-NESB) English speakers associated with campus and community size. This research attempts to unite the communication experiences of international students attending small 2-year campuses within the US, more specifically in southern Wisconsin, with those of undergraduate and graduate students attending 4-year universities of signif icantly larger size. Each student has the right to expect a quality education that minimizes communication misunderstandings due to perceived language deficits, and this is achievable when instructors, staff, and …

Interface Strategies In Monolingual And End-State L2 Spanish Grammars Are Not That Different, María C. Parafita Couto, Virginia C. Mueller Gathercole, Hans Stadthagen-González

Faculty Publications

This study explores syntactic, pragmatic, and lexical influences on adherence to SV and VS orders in native and fluent L2 speakers of Spanish. A judgment task examined 20 native monolingual and 20 longstanding L2 bilingual Spanish speakers' acceptance of SV and VS structures. Seventy-six distinct verbs were tested under a combination of syntactic and pragmatic constraints. Our findings challenge the hypothesis that internal interfaces are acquired more easily than external interfaces (Sorace, 2005, 2011; Sorace and Filiaci, 2006; White, 2006). Additional findings are that (a) bilinguals' judgments are less firm overall than monolinguals' (i.e., monolinguals …

Hacking Trademark Law For Collaborative Communities, Yana Welinder, Stephen Laporte Jan 2015

Hacking Trademark Law For Collaborative Communities, Yana Welinder, Stephen Laporte

Fordham Intellectual Property, Media and Entertainment Law Journal

Collaborative communities create popular work with widely recognized brands, such as Wikipedia, Linux, Android, and Firefox. Trademark law can provide protections to members of these communities and the users of their products so that they can rely on the brands to identify the original projects. This Article explores the conflict between collaborative communities and trademark law. While collaborative communities thrive on openness and decentralization, trademark law requires centralized quality control and various formalities. This Article introduces a descriptive taxonomy of “hacks” that collaborative communities have used to try to mitigate the tensions between their values and trademark law. These hacks …
