Cerebellar Mutism Following Closed Head Injury In A Child, Rajeev Kariyattil, Mohamed Ia Rahim, Unnikrishnan Jan 2015

Cerebellar Mutism Following Closed Head Injury In A Child, Rajeev Kariyattil, Mohamed Ia Rahim, Unnikrishnan

Sultan Qaboos University Medical Journal

Cerebellar mutism is a rare occurrence following paediatric trauma. Although it is quite common after posterior fossa surgery in children, this phenomenon has rarely been reported following other insults, such as trauma, and its pathophysiology remains poorly understood. We report a seven-year-old child who presented to the casualty department of Sultan Qaboos University Hospital in Muscat, Oman, in May 2013 with a traumatic right cerebellar contusion. The child presented with clinical features of cerebellar mutism but underwent a rapid and spontaneous recovery. The possible mechanism of this occurrence is discussed.

Understanding English Language Learners: Incorporating Our Own Cultural Narratives In Tesol Education, Burcu Ates, Soonhyang Kim, Yurimi Grigsby

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

Due to increasing globalization and immigration, there has been an increase in culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) student population in the U.S. public school. Educating teacher candidates to become culturally aware, sensitive, and competent in order to meet the needs of this diverse population has been a concern of teacher education programs. As a result, various teaching methods and strategies are being implemented in teacher education programs. The purpose of this study was to explore the use of cultural narratives (CNs) as an instructional strategy in TESOL education. In this article, we share an example of how one teacher educator …

Multicultural Curriculum In Rural Early Childhood Programs, Lydiah Nganga Dr. Jan 2015

Multicultural Curriculum In Rural Early Childhood Programs, Lydiah Nganga Dr.

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

This study investigated the use of multicultural curricula in early childhood programs (licensed and licensed-exempt) in rural communities in Wyoming. In previous studies, little attention has focused on the nature of multicultural education in rural schools. This study specifically explored the ways in which existing instructional strategies and curricula were utilized to address the diverse learning needs of young children, and the ways in which culture and race are embraced and celebrated in early childhood programs in rural communities. Data showed a positive correlation (r= .45 p = < .01) between national accreditation of early childhood programs and the availability and use of multicultural curricula.

Yes, Actually Subjugation Is A Vocabulary Word, Susan E. Dwoskin Ms. Jan 2015

Yes, Actually Subjugation Is A Vocabulary Word, Susan E. Dwoskin Ms.

Journal of Praxis in Multicultural Education

Abstract.

Teaching today is driven by calls for accountability in the form of high-stakes testing and relies on a standardized, de-contextualized approach to education. The results are "one size fits all" curriculum that ignore local contexts of students' lived experience, discourage student engagement and ultimately work against deep understanding of the content. In contrast, a praxis of ethical caring and place-based education that includes a radical-democratic approach, recognizes teaching as political and utilizes the students’ stories, local knowledge, culture, language and community as an integrating context for learning.

Delivering The Parent-Implemented Communication Strategies ( Pics ) Intervention Using Distance Training And Coaching With A Father And His Child Who Is Hard Of Hearing, Marc Daczewitz

Theses and Dissertations

Many children with disabilities (i.e., deaf/hard of hearing; DHH) experience language delays (Sarant, Holt, Dowell, Rickards, & Blamey, 2009). Parents of children who are DHH can mediate their children's language delays with responsive communication (Guralnick, 2011; Pressman, Pipp-Siegel, & Yoshinaga-Itano, 1999; Warren & Brady, 2007). This study is a partial replication of the Parent-Implemented Communication Strategies (PiCS) Project (Meadan, Angell, Stoner, & Daczewitz, 2014). The PiCS project was implemented with 11 parents and their children with various disabilities (e.g., Down syndrome, Autism Spectrum Disorder). These parents were trained and coached to use naturalistic teaching strategies (i.e., environmental arrangement, modeling, mand-model, …

Interpreting Online Discussions: Connecting Artifacts And Experiences In User Studies, Jörgen Skågeby

The Qualitative Report

This paper presents a methodological effort to connect the specifics of technologies to the details of social practices, in an attempt to deepen our understanding of evolving sociotechnical cultures. More specifically, this paper describes a methodological framework that makes use of online discussions as a vital source of data. The reason the paper focuses on online discussion is that the Internet has become a natural habitat for discussions of high-end technologies, be they physical products or online services. The framework combines interpretative research and attribute-consequence-value (ACV) chain theory – a theory commonly applied to market and consumer research – to …
