English Language Education (Ele) As A Mark Of Social Distinction In Taiwan: Buxibans, Ele Teachers Discourse, And Social Reproduction, Yihfang Pan Jan 2015

English Language Education (Ele) As A Mark Of Social Distinction In Taiwan: Buxibans, Ele Teachers Discourse, And Social Reproduction, Yihfang Pan

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

The purpose of this study is to apply the lens of social reproduction theory to explore how English language educators view English language education (ELE) and to understand how the English language is used to create social distinctions between Taiwanese English language educators and others in Taiwanese society. Unlike other foreign languages, English enjoys a unique status and prestige in Taiwan because it is the preferred language for international communication. The belief in social mobility is the rationale for learning the English language. This study examines how the predominance of the English language creates internal conflicts and competition among groups. …

Language, Literacy, and Sociocultural Studies ETDs

This study focused on the language socialization experiences non-mainstream Indigenous Buriat youth from the Republic of Buriatia, Russian Federation, encountered as they attended a bilingual school in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia, China. They migrated in order to start language studies which would eventually allow them to study alternative Mongolian medicine in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia. Both the Russian Federation and the Republic of China are countries in transition. The Russian educational and economic systems have made dramatic changes after the fall of the Soviet Union in December 1991; currently, the economy and educational opportunities are in decline and there is a widening …

Validating Estimates Of Prevalence Of Non-Communicable Diseases Based On Household Surveys: The Symptomatic Diagnosis Study, Spencer L. James, Minerva Romero, Dolores Ramírez-Villalobos, Sara Gómez

Dartmouth Scholarship

Easy-to-collect epidemiological information is critical for the more accurate estimation of the prevalence and burden of different non-communicable diseases around the world. Current measurement is restricted by limitations in existing measurement systems in the developing world and the lack of biometry tests for non-communicable diseases. Diagnosis based on self-reported signs and symptoms (“Symptomatic Diagnosis,” or SD) analyzed with computer-based algorithms may be a promising method for collecting timely and reliable information on non-communicable disease prevalence. The objective of this study was to develop and assess the performance of a symptom-based questionnaire to estimate prevalence of non-communicable diseases in low-resource areas.

Original Meaning And The Precedent Fallback, Randy J. Kozel Jan 2015

Original Meaning And The Precedent Fallback, Randy J. Kozel

Journal Articles

There is longstanding tension between originalism and judicial precedent. With its resolute focus on deciphering the enacted Constitution, the originalist methodology raises questions about whether judges can legitimately defer to their own pronouncements. Numerous scholars have responded by debating whether and when the Constitution’s original meaning should yield to contrary precedent.

This Article considers the role of judicial precedent not when it conflicts with the Constitution’s original meaning but rather when the consultation of text and historical evidence is insufficient to resolve a case. In those situations, deference to precedent can serve as a fallback rule of constitutional adjudication. The …

New Decisions Highlight Old Misgivings: A Reassessment Of The Foreign Trade Antitrust Improvements Act Following Minn-Chem, Robert D. Sowell Jan 2015

New Decisions Highlight Old Misgivings: A Reassessment Of The Foreign Trade Antitrust Improvements Act Following Minn-Chem, Robert D. Sowell

Florida Law Review

What role does the United States play in policing international commerce? At what point do the laws of the United States end and those of other nations begin? These questions, among others, arise in determining when U.S. antitrust laws apply to foreign conduct. Looking back, the Sherman Act, for some time, has applied to foreign conduct so long as that conduct satisfied certain requirements. However, common law tests proved inconsistent and difficult to apply. As a result, ninety-two years after the enactment of the Sherman Act, Congress intervened with the intent to clarify the common law by way of the …

Intention And Language: On Hirsch's Linguistic Explication Of The Author's Intention, Hong Pang Jan 2015

Intention And Language: On Hirsch's Linguistic Explication Of The Author's Intention, Hong Pang

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

American scholar Hirsch insists on taking the author's intention as the essential premise and the fundamental basis of interpretation, and the main force which maintains his opinions is the explication, exploration and construction in linguistic dimension. Firstly, he indicates that intention is prior to language through the diagnosis of "semantic autonomism" and "ontological linguistics," and shows his critical reflection on the important cultural event — the linguistic turn. In light of this, Hirsch proposes the notion of "speaking subject" and emphasizes that intention can not be completely divorced from language and should be specified and clarified by the role of …

The Poetic Origins Of Media Studies: Some Quantitative Preliminary Understandings, Murvai Peter, Scheffel-Dunand Dominique

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

If the modernist model has dominated the field of literary theory at least since the second half of the 19th Century, does this mean that it also provided a conceptual and discursive framework which was to be adopted and adapted by the field of Media Studies in the 20th Century? The present study gives a tentative answer to this question by shedding light on some of the correlations between concepts found in the modernist aesthetics and in a number of canonical texts in the fields of Media and Communication. More precisely, we propose to conduct a quantitative investigation. Its purpose …

The Logic Of Space: The Internal Relationships Within The Spatial Layers Of Literary Context, Jie Xu Jan 2015

The Logic Of Space: The Internal Relationships Within The Spatial Layers Of Literary Context, Jie Xu

Theoretical Studies in Literature and Art

Just as linguistic context is divided into three layers: verbal context, situational context and socio-cultural context, so the literary context of literature as a language art can be divided into literary textual context, literary situational context and literary cultural context. The textual context is the core layer in literary context, and literary cultural context defines the outer layer of the literary context, with situational context intermediating the inner and outer layers of literary context. Literary situational context is further divided into three interrelated dimensions which may be termed as literary media context, literary discourse context and literary function context. These …

A Pluridisciplinary Treatise Of The Fractal Complexity In John Mukum Mbaku’S Corruption In Africa: Causes, Consequences And Cleanups, Abdul Karim Bangura Jan 2015

A Pluridisciplinary Treatise Of The Fractal Complexity In John Mukum Mbaku’S Corruption In Africa: Causes, Consequences And Cleanups, Abdul Karim Bangura

African Social Science Review

While my extensive search yielded about 20,500 mentions, seven scholarly citations, and three scholarly book reviews of John Mukum Mbaku’s Corruption in Africa: Causes, Consequences and Cleanups (2007), no systematic analysis has been done on the text, even though such potential exists. This is a serious gap in the literature on Africa’s international affairs and development studies because the book is one of the major works, if not the most comprehensive work, on a topic that has significant implications for the continent’s international relations and development. This paper is an attempt to fill this gap. Specifically, I employ the mathematical …

Cultural Competence: New Conceptual Insights Into Its Limits And Potential For Addressing Health Disparities, Shireen S. Rajaram, Susan Bockrath

Journal of Health Disparities Research and Practice

The increasing interest in the role of racism and racialization in health disparities, calls for exploring new paradigms in addressing and eliminating health disparities related to race/ethnicity. Cultural competence is conceptualized as one of the keys ways to address racial/ethnic disparities in public health and healthcare. However, for cultural competence to fulfill this role, it requires a critical understanding of the underlying socio-political and economic processes of power, privilege and institutional racism that create, support and maintain existing health disparities. This paper outlines how the concept of cultural competence can be made more robust, by incorporating concepts such as Public …
