On The Persistence And Attrition Of Women In Mathematics, Katrina Piatek-Jimenez Jan 2015

On The Persistence And Attrition Of Women In Mathematics, Katrina Piatek-Jimenez

Journal of Humanistic Mathematics

The purpose of this study was to investigate what motivates women to choose mathematics as an undergraduate major and to further explore what shapes their future career goals, paying particular attention to their undergraduate experiences and their perceptions of the role of gender in these decisions. A series of semi-structured, individual interviews were conducted with twelve undergraduate women mathematics majors who were attending either a large public university or a small liberal arts college. This study found that strong mathematical identities and enjoyment of mathematics heavily influenced their decisions to major in mathematics. At the career selection stage, these women …

From Aporia To Identity Formation: The Perilous Passage Of African American Women's Dramatic Discourse, Thallam Sarada Jan 2015

From Aporia To Identity Formation: The Perilous Passage Of African American Women's Dramatic Discourse, Thallam Sarada

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper analyses the dramatic discourse of two African American women dramatists, Sonia Sanchez and Ntozake Shange. It uses as its critical framework Erik Erikson’s theory of identity formation to examine their discourse, which challenges patriarchy and contemporary Anglo American feminist writings. It analyses the multiple ways in which Sanchez and Shange invent standard American English to present a unique African American women’s perspective. Their discourse, this paper argues, thus challenges the prevailing notions of power, truth, knowledge and ideology to give voice to the previously silent black women.

Vulnerability Of Elderly Women To Witchcraft Accusations Among The Fipa Of Sumbawanga, 1961-2010, Hamisi Mathias Machangu

Journal of International Women's Studies

Witchcraft accusations have led to the killings of elderly women in many parts of sub-Saharan Africa. For many years, the violence has had major effects on people’s health. Witchcraft accusations have been the source of people’s loss of limbs and deaths among elderly women in Africa. Although these problems have had effects on elderly women, there has been very little reconstruction of their history in Tanzania. Thus, the aim of this article is to rewrite the history of the vulnerability of the elderly women to witchcraft accusations among the Fipa of Sumbawanga district of Tanzania.

This article focuses on the …

Barriers To The Utilisation Of Provisions Of The Zimbabwean Domestic Violence Act Among Abused Christian Women In Zimbabwe, Excellent Chireshe Jan 2015

Barriers To The Utilisation Of Provisions Of The Zimbabwean Domestic Violence Act Among Abused Christian Women In Zimbabwe, Excellent Chireshe

Journal of International Women's Studies

The Domestic Violence Act of Zimbabwe was enacted in response to an escalation in cases of domestic violence. In spite of the enactment of the Act, domestic violence continues and there is limited utilisation of the provisions of the law. This paper seeks to identify factors that militate against the utilisation of provisions of the Act by victims of domestic violence. Twenty-two Christian women who were abused by their male intimate partners participated in the study on which this paper is based. A qualitative design, influenced by the feminist perspective, was adopted for this study. Purposeful sampling was applied in …

Veiling And Blogging: Social Media As Sites Of Identity Negotiation And Expression Among Saudi Women, Hala Guta, Magdalena Karolak

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper aims at assessing how Saudi Arab young women use social media for negotiating and expressing their identity. Through in-depth interviews with a sample of seven Saudi females aged 20-26, the research revealed that the internet, with its protection of individual privacy, provided the participants a space to negotiate the boundaries imposed on them by cultural and societal rules. Participants employed several tactics of negotiation such as using nicknames, concealing their personal images and using first names only in order not to be identified by their family names. Using multiple accounts is also popular among participants. Without gatekeepers, the …

The Meaning Of Hijab: Voices Of Muslim Women In Egypt And Yemen, Kenneth E. Jackson, Elizabeth Monk-Turner Jan 2015

The Meaning Of Hijab: Voices Of Muslim Women In Egypt And Yemen, Kenneth E. Jackson, Elizabeth Monk-Turner

Journal of International Women's Studies

This work explores how Muslim women in Egypt and Yemen understand the hijab, or head scarf. Based on data (N = 100) from a self-administered questionnaire written in Arabic, differences about the meaning of hijab are examined from the perspective of women who wear or are expected to wear the head scarf. When asked what the hijab means, Egyptian women focus on religious reasons and Yemeni women emphasize a cultural (or modesty) understanding. When probed further about their understanding of hijab, Egyptian women split between religious and gendered explanations. Significant numbers of women in our Egyptian sample report …

Operating Islamic Jurisprudence In Non-Muslim Jurisdictions: Traditional Islamic Precepts And Contemporary Controversies In The United States, Mustafa R. K. Baig Jan 2015

Operating Islamic Jurisprudence In Non-Muslim Jurisdictions: Traditional Islamic Precepts And Contemporary Controversies In The United States, Mustafa R. K. Baig

Chicago-Kent Law Review

With the recent public furor in the United States regarding “Shari‘a,” studies into the content of Islamic jurisprudence concerning Muslims living under non-Muslim jurisdiction are more pertinent than ever in the U.S. context. As “anti-Shari‘a” rhetoric has increased in fervency, informed input into the debates could go some way in correcting the peddled misconceptions. The paper begins by assessing how Muslim scholars viewed a Muslim’s travel to and residence in non-Muslim lands, and the obligation to abide by the laws of the land. It will focus on the jihad (siyar) section in Islamic jurisprudence and the section on …

Until Justice And Peace Embrace: Worship That Announces And Shapes Reconciliation, David M. Bailey, Shannon Jammal-Hollemans, Mwenda Ntarangwi, Kathy Smith, Sandra Maria Van Opstal, Nicholas Wolterstorff, David Rylaarsdam Jan 2015

Until Justice And Peace Embrace: Worship That Announces And Shapes Reconciliation, David M. Bailey, Shannon Jammal-Hollemans, Mwenda Ntarangwi, Kathy Smith, Sandra Maria Van Opstal, Nicholas Wolterstorff, David Rylaarsdam

Symposium on Worship Archive

Public worship and reconciliation are deeply connected. In worship, we announce the good news of reconciliation in Christ in sermons and songs. But we don’t speak or sing about it. In worship, we also practice habits that are fundamental building blocks of reconciliation: we confess sin, pass the peace to each other, and gather in unity around Christ’s table. At its best, public worship both announces and participates in Christ-shaped reconciliation. Yet this is not easy, especially when congregations are marked by divisions and conflict. What about churches that sing about reconciliation and unity, but seem unwilling or unable to …

A Defeasible Reasoning Framework For Human Mental Workload Representation And Assessment, Luca Longo Jan 2015

A Defeasible Reasoning Framework For Human Mental Workload Representation And Assessment, Luca Longo

Conference papers

Human mental workload (MWL) has gained importance in the last few decades as an important design concept. It is a multifaceted complex construct mainly applied in cognitive sciences and has been defined in many different ways. Although measuring MWL has potential advantages in interaction and interface design, its formalisation as an operational and computational construct has not sufficiently been addressed. This research contributes to the body of knowledge by providing an extensible framework built upon defeasible reasoning, and implemented with argumentation theory (AT), in which MWL can be better defined, measured, analysed, explained and applied in different human–computer interactive contexts. …

Sustaining Nigeria’S Democracy: Public Libraries As An Indispensable Instrument In Anambra State, Amaka Florence Nwofor, Ilorah Hope Chinyere Mrs

Library Philosophy and Practice (e-journal)

A survey of the historical and contemporary facts and figures presents Nigeria as a Nation battling to entrench the values of democracy. Much remains to be done to reinforce this progress and prepare the nation for the political realities of democracy in the 21st Century. The citizens need to be enlightened and informed to actively participate in the democratic process. The role of the library as a social utility institution in this respect is indispensable and significant. The paper examined the public library as an agent of social and political transformation in Anambra State. It reviewed the services, activities, …

The Aesthetics Of Friends' Meeting Houses, Roger Homan Jan 2015

The Aesthetics Of Friends' Meeting Houses, Roger Homan

Quaker Studies

In an attempt to identify a Quaker aesthetic as it applies to English meeting houses, this article draws upon the physical evidence of English Meetings past and present, upon the records of discussions preceding the design and construction of meeting houses, upon interviews with Friends at some thirty meeting houses and upon the observational and interpretative literature. The main part of the discussion is structured around the moral principles of plainness, worthiness and simplicity. A distinction is made between the effect of plainness, which has in the past been regulated, and simplicity, which is here explored as a moral attribute …

Did William Penn Diverge Significantly From George Fox In His Understanding Of The Quaker Message?, T. Vail Palmer Jr. Jan 2015

Did William Penn Diverge Significantly From George Fox In His Understanding Of The Quaker Message?, T. Vail Palmer Jr.

Quaker Studies

Melvin Endy argues that George Fox and William Penn shared similar goals for Quakerism, and that in light of their close working relationship, scholars who argue for significant differences between Fox's and Penn's views of Quakerism must account for Fox's failure to criticise Penn's views. This paper proposes that the lynchpin of Fox's understanding of Quakerism was an empathetic reading of the Bible, so that the authority of Scripture was internalised. In Penn's writings, the Bible is appealed to as an external authority. Because Fox lacked sophistication in the relevant areas of thought, he was unable to identify the core …

'What They Seek For Is In Themselves': Quaker Language And Thought In Eighteenth- And Nineteenth-Century American Literature, James Peacock Jan 2015

'What They Seek For Is In Themselves': Quaker Language And Thought In Eighteenth- And Nineteenth-Century American Literature, James Peacock

Quaker Studies

This paper argues that Quakerism was an important influence on a number of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century American writers. Looking at the work of, amongst others, Charles Brockden Brown, Robert Montgomery Bird, Ralph Waldo Emerson and John Greenleaf Whittier, it demonstrates that both the stereotyped depiction of Quakers and the use of Quaker ideas, such as the inward light in literature of the period, helped writers tackle some of the paradoxes of democracy in a young nation. The perceived mystery of Quaker individualism is used in these texts first to dramatize anxiety over the formation of American 'character' as either fundamentally …

Co-Teaching Partnerships For Excellence In The Age Of Accountability: A Preliminary Study Of The Effects Of Co-Teaching In Student Teaching, Jeanne Delcolle, Claudine Keenan Jan 2015

Co-Teaching Partnerships For Excellence In The Age Of Accountability: A Preliminary Study Of The Effects Of Co-Teaching In Student Teaching, Jeanne Delcolle, Claudine Keenan

NERA Conference Proceedings 2014

Accountability measures for educators have made districts reluctant to accept teacher candidates for clinical experience in a traditional take-over model. Difficulty placing teacher candidates prompted Richard Stockton College to research innovative student teaching models to strengthen clinical partnerships with P-12 districts. Studies of co-teaching in student teaching from St. Cloud State University showed a model that provided many benefits to the teacher candidate and cooperating teacher, as well as notable gains in student achievement. That research inspired this pilot study, whichidentified co-teaching strengths in professionalism, teaching time, student learning, and cooperating teacher growth, with implications for strengthening future research.

Exploring A Trainee's Response To Visiting Refugees In Jordan: A Bifocal Art Exploration, Daniela Marie Montañez Jan 2015

Exploring A Trainee's Response To Visiting Refugees In Jordan: A Bifocal Art Exploration, Daniela Marie Montañez

LMU Theses and Dissertations

This arts-based research investigated the personal responses of a trainee art therapist working with displaced refugees in Jordan. This inquiry is based on the belief that it is important for a new trainee to cultivate a broader appreciation of cross-cultural issues for both personal and professional applications. The art-based data, analyzed through Betensky's (1995) phenomenological approach, inspired a profound exploration of the refugee experience while simultaneously exploring the role and identity of the trainee. The author presented seven prominent themes that emerged from the refugee and trainee experiences: displacement, survival, connection, loss of control, safety, competence, and countertransference. Between both …

In recent years The Anchor moved to monthly print issues and a more frequently updated website. The Anchor is now published in print twice per academic semester. Occasionally, the volume and/or issue numbering is irregular.

Collaborating To Ruin? Us National Laboratories And The Impact Of International Research Partnerships, Gerald Hendrickson Jan 2015

Collaborating To Ruin? Us National Laboratories And The Impact Of International Research Partnerships, Gerald Hendrickson

Economics ETDs

Following the Cold War, Russian and US research institutions forged new collaborative ties to take advantage of perceived complementarities in conducting scientific research as part of US nonproliferation initiatives. These ties appear to have been successful in the broader nonproliferation context as relatively few Russian nuclear scientists emigrated to perceived rogue states like Iran and North Korea in the years that immediately followed the dissolution of the Soviet Union. Early on, the research benefits of these ties appeared to be significant. Today, as the Russian science and technology cadre is going through a demographic transition and the Russian state is …

The Development Of Preschoolers' Living Kinds Concept: A Longitudinal Study, Jordan Tessa Margett Jan 2015

The Development Of Preschoolers' Living Kinds Concept: A Longitudinal Study, Jordan Tessa Margett

Psychology ETDs

The overarching goal of this study was to examine the structural organization of preschoolers living kinds concept and the nature of developmental change in that concept from roughly 3.5- to 4.5-years-old. Specifically, this study was designed to assess whether preschoolers' living kind conceptual development involves progressive elaboration of an existing biologically based skeletal framework or conceptual reorganization. Unlike previous studies, this study employed a longitudinal design, an extensive stimulus set, alternate indices of understanding, and complementary statistical analyses. Thirty-five 3.0- to 3.5-year-olds participated in four testing sessions over the course of one year; each testing session included three phases that …

The Changing World In Microcosm: The Dying Languages Of Liberia, Sierra Leone, And Guinea, George Tucker Childs Jan 2015

The Changing World In Microcosm: The Dying Languages Of Liberia, Sierra Leone, And Guinea, George Tucker Childs

Applied Linguistics Faculty Publications and Presentations

Observers have become increasingly aware of how the world is changing due to the forces of globalization, be it in the form of neo-colonialism, the scramble for natural resources, or the various extractive industries. The recent alarm over Ebola illustrated another pernicious fallout of increased communication and travel. The effect of globalization has also been great on indigenous peoples and their cultures, in particular on what many consider to be an integral component of culture, the local languages.

I report on recent research devoted to the documentation of endangered languages in Sierra Leone, Guinea, and Liberia (the Ebola countries). Most …

Collaboration For Success In Young Adults With Traumatic Brain Injury, Barbara Cechanowicz

Nursing ETDs

Aim. The aim of this study was to explore self-efficacy and success in young adult survivors of traumatic brain injury (TBI) and provide the opportunity for participants to communicate their perceptions, thoughts, emotions, and concerns. Background. Many of those affected by TBI are young adults who are establishing their social and work lives. Young adults face challenges and choices that are pivotal in establishing a course for their lifetime. Self-efficacy theory provided the conceptual framework for the study. The TBI Self-Efficacy Questionnaire and General Self-Efficacy Scale were used to measure self-efficacy, and the Glasgow Outcomes Scale-Extended was used to measure …
