Learning Language In Autism: Maternal Linguistic Input Contributes To Later Vocabulary, Janet Bang, Aparna Nadig Mar 2015

Learning Language In Autism: Maternal Linguistic Input Contributes To Later Vocabulary, Janet Bang, Aparna Nadig

Faculty Research, Scholarly, and Creative Activity

It is well established that children with typical development (TYP) exposed to more maternal linguistic input develop larger vocabularies. We know relatively little about the linguistic environment available to children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD), and whether input contributes to their later vocabulary. Children with ASD or TYP and their mothers from English and French-speaking families engaged in a 10 min free-play interaction. To compare input, children were matched on language ability, sex, and maternal education (ASD n = 20, TYP n = 20). Input was transcribed, and the number of word tokens and types, lexical diversity (D), mean length …

Quranic Readings In Al-Baydawi’S Interpretation: The Phenomenon Of Hamza (A Phonetic Study), Sahib Munshid Eabaas, Shimaa Mohamed Sabry Mar 2015

Quranic Readings In Al-Baydawi’S Interpretation: The Phenomenon Of Hamza (A Phonetic Study), Sahib Munshid Eabaas, Shimaa Mohamed Sabry

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Among the phonetic phenomena mentioned by Al-Baydawi in his commentary is the phenomenon of gemination (doubling of consonants). He discussed Quranic readings that included both the full pronunciation of the geminated consonant and its various simplifications, such as deletion or assimilation. Our study revealed that Al-Baydawi considered this phenomenon a dialectal feature used by some Arab tribes. He attributed this to the perceived harshness of the geminated sound, which he likened to a hiccup, or to avoid the repetition of similar sounds, or to preserve the original pronunciation—a view shared by other Arabic linguists. Phonetic phenomena occupy a significant portion …

Demand Construction Is A Pragmatic Approach., Walid Shaker Al-Naas, Mahmoud Abdul Hamad Al-Lami, Hamad Adl Al-Ghanimi

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

The topic of sentence structure, particularly imperative sentences, has been extensively discussed by both classical and modern Arabic scholars and researchers. However, I wanted to examine sentence structure from both its classical and modern perspectives, employing a comparative approach based on contemporary theories such as speech acts, indirect speech acts, and pragmatic implicature. I divided my discussion into two main sections: the first addressed the concept and terminology of sentence structure, while the second explored the perspectives of modern linguists, especially those focusing on pragmatics, regarding this linguistic system. The section dedicated to imperative sentences, however, only included the views …

Analysis Of The Verses Of Miserliness In The Holy Quran In Light Of The Integrated Discourses, Bassem Khairi Khudair Mar 2015

Analysis Of The Verses Of Miserliness In The Holy Quran In Light Of The Integrated Discourses, Bassem Khairi Khudair

Uruk Journal of Human Sciences

Integrated pragmatics theory represents an important and advanced stage in the development of pragmatic studies. It builds upon the work of Benveniste and the analytical school, and its most comprehensive formulation can be found in the works of DeCroux and Anscombre. The findings of speech act theory formed the basis for their development of argumentation theory. Integrated pragmatics rejects the idea of separating the levels of language (syntax, semantics, and pragmatics) proposed by Morris, advocating instead for the integration of these three components during discourse analysis. It focuses on both the linguistic and rhetorical levels. At the linguistic level, it …

A Critical Case Study Of Selected U.S. History Textbooks From A Tribal Critical Race Theory Perspective, Gary Padgett Mar 2015

A Critical Case Study Of Selected U.S. History Textbooks From A Tribal Critical Race Theory Perspective, Gary Padgett

The Qualitative Report

The purpose of this study was to describe and explain the portrayal of American Indians in U.S. textbooks selected for review in Hillsborough County, Florida’s 2012 textbook adoption. The study identified which of the textbooks under consideration contained the greatest amount of information dedicated to American Indians and analyzed how that information was portrayed. The exploratory question that guided this study was, under what conditions can Tribal Critical Race Theory help illuminate how American Indians are portrayed in textbooks? The methodology used is a critical case study (Janesick, 2004; Rubin & Rubin, 2005). The Five Great Values, as developed by …

Ethics And/Or Success In Conducting Organization Studies: A Habermasian Account, Fabio Vizeu Mar 2015

Ethics And/Or Success In Conducting Organization Studies: A Habermasian Account, Fabio Vizeu

The Qualitative Report

In the world of Organization research, some words are used by scholarswith a specific political purpose: two of these are ethics and emancipation. The second is used to recall the social purpose ofthe academic community, which can be donefromseveral perspectives (for example, that of Critical Management Studies). Regarding ethics, organization researchers often use this word to denounce managerial practices.Their researchcommonly reports the ideological orientation of such management practices as imply unethical behaviour. In this sense, the unethical orientation of managers has been seen as something masked by a manipulative discourse, which has built the false impression that management practices are …

Mitochondrial Dna Suggests A Western Eurasian Origin For Ancient (Proto-) Bulgarians, D V. Nesheva, S Karachanak-Yankova, M Lari, Y Yordanov, A Galabov, David Caramelli, Draga Toncheva

Human Biology Open Access Pre-Prints

Ancient (proto-) Bulgarians have long been thought to as a Turkic population. However, evidence found in the past three decades show that this is not the case. Until now, this evidence does not include ancient mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) analysis. In order to fill this void, we have collected human remains from the VIII-X century AD located in three necropolises in Bulgaria: Nojarevo (Silistra region) and Monastery of Mostich (Shumen region), both in Northeast Bulgaria and Tuhovishte (Satovcha region) in Southwest Bulgaria. The phylogenetic analysis of 13 ancient DNA samples (extracted from teeth) identified 12 independent haplotypes, which we further classified …

Evaluation Of Desiccated And Deformed Diaspores From Natural Building Materials, Tamas Henn, Robert Pal Mar 2015

Evaluation Of Desiccated And Deformed Diaspores From Natural Building Materials, Tamas Henn, Robert Pal

Biological Sciences

With the increasing sophistication of paleoethnobotanical methods, it is now possible to reconstruct new aspects of the day-to-day life of past peoples, and, ultimately, gain information about their cultivated plants, land-use practices, architecture, diet, and trade. Reliable identification of plant remains, however, remains essential to the study of paleoethno-botany, and there is still much to learn about precise identification. This paper describes and evaluates the most frequent types of deformed desiccated diaspores revealed from adobe bricks used in buildings in Southwestern Hungary that were built primarily between 1850 and 1950. A total of 24,634 diaspores were recovered from 333.05 kg …

Apostle To Burma: A Case Study Of Ecumenical Evangelicalism In The Life Of Adoniram Judson, Jacob Manning Mar 2015

Apostle To Burma: A Case Study Of Ecumenical Evangelicalism In The Life Of Adoniram Judson, Jacob Manning

Library Research Prize Student Works

Adoniram (1788-1850) and Ann Judson (1789-1826) boarded the Caravan along with Samuel and Harriet Newell in Salem, Massachusetts on February 19, 1812 with a directive from the American Board of Commissioners for Foreign Missions to preach the Gospel in the Far East. Four months later, the missionaries arrived in India, but the Judsons sailed once more before they began a life of missionary labor in the kingdom of Burma. Amidst the joys of successful Bible translation and establishment of a Baptist congregation in Burma, Ann and Adoniram suffered tremendous loss: none of their three children survived infancy, and Ann died …

This software system is the second version of pre-introduced software system and it provides more …

Adding Possibilistic Knowledge To Probabilities Makes Many Problems Algorithmically Decidable, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich Mar 2015

Adding Possibilistic Knowledge To Probabilities Makes Many Problems Algorithmically Decidable, Olga Kosheleva, Vladik Kreinovich

Departmental Technical Reports (CS)

Many physical theories accurately predict which events are possible and which are not, or -- in situations where probabilistic (e.g., quantum) effects are important -- predict the probabilities of different possible outcomes. At first glance, it may seem that this probabilistic information is all we need. We show, however, that to adequately describe physicists' reasoning, it is important to also take into account additional knowledge -- about what is possible and what is not. We show that this knowledge can be described in terms of possibility theory, and that the presence of this knowledge makes many problems algorithmically decidable.

Comparing Interaction And Use Of Space In Traditional And Innovative Classrooms, Laura Gurzynski-Weiss, Avizia Long, Megan Solon Mar 2015

Comparing Interaction And Use Of Space In Traditional And Innovative Classrooms, Laura Gurzynski-Weiss, Avizia Long, Megan Solon

Faculty Publications

Despite myriad changes to language teaching methods over time, university-level classroom spaces have largely remained the same—until now. Recent innovations in classroom space design center on technological advances, include movable furniture and coffee-shop style rooms, and are believed to facilitate language learning in several ways. Specifically, compared to traditional classrooms, innovative spaces are designed in the hope of decreasing pre-task set up, increasing student-centered interaction, and facilitating collaborative work with multiple partners—features believed to be important for classroom learning. However, whether or not such features are present in these innovative spaces, or more so than in traditional classrooms, has yet …

Sacred Nakedness Narraphor: The Untold Story Of Shame & Glory, Daniel J. Donohue Mar 2015

Sacred Nakedness Narraphor: The Untold Story Of Shame & Glory, Daniel J. Donohue

Doctor of Ministry

Shame and glory appear to be binary opposites inextricably tied within Scripture. As such, addressing one without the other is comparable to addressing slavery without mentioning freedom. Accordingly, the only way a counselee’s shame and glory can be healed and revealed is if both are held open to God and other people. Herein lies the problem: counselees hide vulnerability for fear of being ashamed, thus veiling the glory of their life. How, then, can a counselee feel more trusting of God and safer with people so their shame and glory can be healed and revealed? The thesis of this dissertation …

Exploring Trends In Disproportionality Of Emotional Disturbance Classification After The Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act (Ideia), Ghirmay Alazar Mar 2015

Exploring Trends In Disproportionality Of Emotional Disturbance Classification After The Individuals With Disabilities Education Improvement Act (Ideia), Ghirmay Alazar

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

The aim of this study was to systematically investigate the trends of disproportionate representation of African American students in special education when compared to Caucasian special education students in emotional disturbance category as well as the trends in disproportionality of emotional disturbance classification after the Individuals with Disabilities Education Improvement Act (IDEIA). African American students in special education are disproportionately represented when compared to Caucasian special education students but uncertainty persists regarding the nature and the extent of the problem (Aud et al., 2010; Countinho & Oswald, 2002; Skiba et al., 2006, 2008). This study employed a mixed methods multiple …

China And India: Globalization With Different Paths, Joseph Tse-Hei Lee, Satish K. Kolluri, Pan Zhen

Global Asia Journal

This occasional paper has three essays written by professors from Pace University and Nanjing Normal University that address a host of structural challenges facing China and India in pursuit of sustainable development in the early twenty-first century. Pan Zhen gives a critical overview of China’s economic policies, and finds the top-down development model to be fraught with tensions. Joseph Tse-Hei Lee argues that the ability of China to pursue sustainable growth and social betterment is largely contingent upon many circumstantial factors, especially the negative attributes of globalization and the rise of domestic discontents. Satish K. Kolluri shifts the focus of …

Engaging The Learning Community With An Integrated E-Learning, Gaming And Social Networking Platform, Tim Thomasma

Journal of Educational Leadership in Action

Our view is that an e-learning platform based on user-created content, gamification, and with an integrated social network, will create a content-dense environment in which all of the stakeholders can maximize their outcomes and in which the best teachers, students, lessons, and organizations will rise to the top. The elements of such an integrated e-learning platform would include: Wizards to enable instructors to quickly create engaging multi-media lessons; Capability to automatically transform lesson content into additional activities, games, and quizzes; The ability for students to take lessons in the form they prefer, including lessons presented as games; Reports and monitoring …

Leadership Development And Language Learning: A Foundational Framework, Sheri Spaine Long, Leanne Derby, Lauren Scharff, Jean W. Leloup, Daniel Uribe

Dimensions

The ACTFL 21st Century Skills Map (2011) proposes incorporating “leadership and responsibility” into language learning (LL). This study offers a foundational framework for combined LL and leadership development (LD) and contains a snapshot of the presence of LD in the language curriculum and observations and attitudes regarding LD in LL courses (using feedback forms and focus groups) at the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA) in 2012. Results suggest a two dimension structure to inform LL (a) generic vs. discipline-specific LD, and (b) implicit vs. explicit incorporation of LD. Lower frequency of explicit, discipline-specific types of LD led to a …

Harmful Recurring Themes In The Media: The Cost Of Fifty Shades And Lovelace, Ashley Sanbonmatsu Mar 2015

Harmful Recurring Themes In The Media: The Cost Of Fifty Shades And Lovelace, Ashley Sanbonmatsu

Communication Studies

The hegemonic threads that are present, in the fictional story of Fifty Shades of Grey and in the “true” depiction of Lovelace, continue to depict gender roles that render to consumers the objectification of women through the use of the male gaze. This consumption can encourage harmful recurring topics, such as rape fantasies and co-dependent relationships that can lead to domestic violence, while concurrently undermining the agency of the woman and simultaneously pitching her against the standards of the Madonna/whore complex.

After reading Fifty Shades of Grey, one is left to ponder how popular texts perpetuate existing patriarchal, hegemonic …

Economic Change And The Redistribution Of Power Among Women In Yemen: A Focus On The Treatment Of Domestic Workers, Molly Foye Mar 2015

Economic Change And The Redistribution Of Power Among Women In Yemen: A Focus On The Treatment Of Domestic Workers, Molly Foye

Spectrum

A shared female identity does not promise solidarity among women in capitalist society. Exploring the prejudices held by Yemeni women over domestic workers exposes class related inequities among women. Recent economic change in Yemen showcases the crystallization of class while local gender identities morph in accordance to overarching capitalist demands. The presence of marginalized domestic workers in upper-class Yemeni homes demonstrates the mutually informative relationship between class status and gender identity. Paralleling greater Yemeni hierarchical and patriarchal society, Yemeni women assert class privilege over low-income domestic workers. Of extreme relevance to better understanding gender and Islam, I argue that Yemeni …
