Aviation Data Mining, David A. Pagels Mar 2015

Aviation Data Mining, David A. Pagels

Scholarly Horizons: University of Minnesota, Morris Undergraduate Journal

We explore different methods of data mining in the field of aviation and their effectiveness. The field of aviation is always searching for new ways to improve safety. However, due to the large amounts of aviation data collected daily, parsing through it all by hand would be impossible. Because of this, problems are often found by investigating accidents. With the relatively new field of data mining we are able to parse through an otherwise unmanageable amount of data to find patterns and anomalies that indicate potential incidents before they happen. The data mining methods outlined in this paper include Multiple …

Psychology: Faculty Scholarship

A major milestone of child development is the acquisition and use of speech and language. Communication disorders, including speech sound disorder (SSD), can impair a child's academic, social and behavioral development. Speech sound disorder is a complex, polygenic trait with a substantial genetic component. However, specific genes that contribute to SSD remain largely unknown. To identify associated genes, we assessed the association of the DYX2 dyslexia risk locus and markers in neurochemical signaling genes (e.g., nicotinic and dopaminergic) with SSD and related endophenotypes. We first performed separate primary associations in two independent samples – Cleveland SSD (210 affected and 257 …

Connecting, Creating, And Composing: A Shared Multimodal Journey, Margaret B. Krause Mar 2015

Connecting, Creating, And Composing: A Shared Multimodal Journey, Margaret B. Krause

Journal of Media Literacy Education

Given the dynamic nature of our society, literacy conceptualizations are constantly being redefined. While print literacy continues to be the primary literacy within elementary classroom, the growing nature of technological capabilities, social networking, and multimodal affordances require educators to delve into explorations of how children can be successful in negotiating meaning in our world. As an elementary educator, university instructor, and mother of three children, the author explores personal views of literacy through a shared multimodal journal experience with her children. This article highlights the experiences of her son through the journaling process and how he selects material for a …

Empathic Encounters: Negotiating Identity In 9/11 Fiction And Translation, Kirsty A. Hemsworth Mar 2015

Empathic Encounters: Negotiating Identity In 9/11 Fiction And Translation, Kirsty A. Hemsworth

The Quiet Corner Interdisciplinary Journal

Dominated by the polarized strategies of domestication and foreignization, conventional literary translation approaches tend to operate on the assumption that source and target cultures, and, by extension, their literary works, are fundamentally irreconcilable on the basis of linguistic, stylistic and ideological differences. Dislocated by the traumatic force of the event, only to be further uprooted by the translation process itself, the identities at stake in American works of 9/11 fiction cannot be so clearly differentiated and securely defined. Moreover, any attempt to fictionalize and translate this real-world trauma inevitably encounters the event as a visual singularity, whereby the image supersedes …

Contextualizing The Writings Of J.R.R. Tolkien On Literary Criticism, Sherrylyn Branchaw Mar 2015

Contextualizing The Writings Of J.R.R. Tolkien On Literary Criticism, Sherrylyn Branchaw

Journal of Tolkien Research

This essay offers a reinterpretation of Tolkien's writings about literary criticism, which are focused on Beowulf, fairy stories, and his own works. Whereas his writings have often been taken to mean that analytic scholarship is not valid and should not be pursued, my essay takes the intellectual climate of the time into consideration and offers an alternative interpretation, according to which he did not mean to forbid these studies outright and indeed intended that scholars should continue writing them. The essay ends with a call to academics not to be discouraged by his strong language from producing analytic studies.

Slenderize Me: Youth's Infatuation With Images In The Media, Madeline W. Collins Mar 2015

Slenderize Me: Youth's Infatuation With Images In The Media, Madeline W. Collins

Line by Line: A Journal of Beginning Student Writing

I began to compose this research paper based on an assignment in my English 200H Writing Seminar. The assignment was to use original and unoriginal research to argue and prove an opinion about a gender-related issue. I began the process by researching online articles about the effects of the images in the media on young adults. Being a young woman in the era of technology made me very interested in how the increased media exposure of today negatively affects the confidence levels and body images of myself and other girls my age. After gathering baseline information from online academic articles, …

Stabilizing De Facto Conflicts In The Post-Soviet Space : The Role Of The European Union In Conflict Resolution In Moldova, Marissa Wyant Mar 2015

Stabilizing De Facto Conflicts In The Post-Soviet Space : The Role Of The European Union In Conflict Resolution In Moldova, Marissa Wyant

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

The European Union (EU) is frequently credited for the peace and stability in Western Europe since World War II. The Union’s creation of the common market and its efforts to promote liberal ideals of democracy, rule of law, and respect for human rights are among the many reasons cited. After the end of the Cold War with the collapse of the Soviet Union, the expansion of the EU through Eastern Enlargement became a prominent topic both within the EU and within the former Soviet states. Resolving conflicts in the region is vital to the stability of the region, and will …

Navigating Collective Activity Systems: An Approach Towards Rhetorical Inquiry, Katherine Jesse Royce Mar 2015

Navigating Collective Activity Systems: An Approach Towards Rhetorical Inquiry, Katherine Jesse Royce

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this formative intervention was to design a professional and technical communications course around rhetorical inquiry. The participants, undergraduate health sciences majors (N=22 for section A, N=20 section B), were observed throughout the fall semester of the 2014-2015 academic year. A rhetorical inquiry framework was applied via activity systems, and data were collected using several methodologies including participant observations, research questionnaires, as well as participant deliverables, and were transcribed using Daisy Mwanza's Eight-Step Model. Results demonstrated students successfully used activity systems as a means of approaching rhetorical inquiry. Furthermore, students indicated a high level of engagement in the …

I Want My Ict: Information Communication Technology, Governance, And Poverty In The Developing World, Jack J. Barry Iii Mar 2015

I Want My Ict: Information Communication Technology, Governance, And Poverty In The Developing World, Jack J. Barry Iii

Doctoral Dissertations

The contradictory findings in studies investigating the impact of Information Communication Technologies on poverty in the developing world compose the primary puzzle I tackle in this dissertation. The argument presented here can be summarized as ‘guardedly optimistic’ about the impact of the Internet and mobile phones as I believe they can contributed to improving the lives of the poor, yet only when their limitations are addressed: primarily cost, education, and language. I posit that good governance is a forgotten, yet vital, missing link in the literature.

The following ten claims are put forth: (1) Internet and mobile phones have more …

Speaking Their Language: Textisms In Today's Communication, Adam Lloyd Drum

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This study is an exploratory look into the use of text-based slang, or textisms, in modern communication. People use textisms in multiple media of communication, whether it is in text messages, emails, and various types of social media. This study asked a focus group about their uses and gratifications from textisms. The focus group delved into their appreciations as both users and receivers. Participants reflected on their personal experience and preferences with textisms for their personal communications as well as their opinion for various types of businesses using them in their larger message design efforts.

The participants were comprised of …

The Weathered Corrugations Of His Face: A Performative Reflection On Nelson Mandela, Self, And The Call For Racial (Un)Becoming, Pauli Badenhorst Mar 2015

The Weathered Corrugations Of His Face: A Performative Reflection On Nelson Mandela, Self, And The Call For Racial (Un)Becoming, Pauli Badenhorst

Teaching and Learning Faculty Publications

On the occasion of the first anniversary of the death of Nelson Rolihlahla MANDELA, this self-exploratory narrative study utilizes a Butlerian performative theoretical framework to both uncover discursively regulated social practices as generative of raced identity ensconced in belonging, and the undoing of such identity through the redeployment of social practices predicated instead on a Weltanschauung of becoming. While the accountable subject of autoethnographic work is concomitantly problematized, fluid subjectivity is itself demonstrated as crucial to historical accountability. A resultant appeal for white South Africans to actively begin the work of defamiliarizing themselves with the sanitized dominant popular …

Theory Of Mind Without A Language Model: Effects Of Social Experience, Education And Language Exposure, Deanna L. Gagne Mar 2015

Theory Of Mind Without A Language Model: Effects Of Social Experience, Education And Language Exposure, Deanna L. Gagne

Master's Theses

Theory of Mind (ToM) abilities, i.e., the understanding that others’ internal states differ from one’s own, and that these states guide behavior, are multiply determined. ToM abilities underlie later social and pragmatic abilities, grossly affecting later life experiences, particularly for deaf children. However, previous studies have not clearly identified the effects of language, hearing status, or other exogenous factors, such as education or executive function abilities, on ToM development. To disentangle these, we studied three understudied populations in Nicaragua: Homesigners, who have not acquired a conventional language but have developed gestural communication systems; users of Nicaraguan Sign Language, an emerging …

An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Inquiry Into Facebook Newcomer Motivations For Participatory Activities, Kristin Raub Mar 2015

An Interpretive Phenomenological Analysis Inquiry Into Facebook Newcomer Motivations For Participatory Activities, Kristin Raub

CCAC Theses and Dissertations

This qualitative study provided insight into the phenomenon of newcomers in social networking, in particular, to understand what role specific Facebook features play in motivating content sharing and contribution among newcomers. Research indicated that the first several months or years of social networking site (SNS) membership are the most crucial in terms of indicating long-term participation and commitment to the SNS. Long-term participation is specifically manifested through interactions with peers who are members of the same website and through interactivity such as content sharing and contribution. A number of quantitative studies have focused on motivations for user contribution in social …

Let's Go To The Carnival: Hybridization Of Heterotopian Spaces In The Films Of Kevin Smith, Anthony L. Sylvester Mar 2015

Let's Go To The Carnival: Hybridization Of Heterotopian Spaces In The Films Of Kevin Smith, Anthony L. Sylvester

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This paper argues against the charges of puerility in the films of Kevin Smith. I analyze Mallrats (1995), Clerks II (2006) and Zack and Miri Make a Porno (2008). To illustrate my contention, I offer close readings of the director's films, particularly the protagonists' bodily/linguistic performances. My efforts will vindicate my assertion that through these specialized performances, through the forceful assertion of their marginal identities, the films' protagonists encroach upon, and finally appropriate, historically dominant spaces. As a result, the spaces they appropriate acquire a new, characteristic hybridity. Michel Foucault's concept of heterotopia provides a framework for delineating the dominant …

Africans In Guangzhou : A Cultural Analysis Of Transnationality Amongst Africans On The Move, Roberto Carlos Castillo Bautista Mar 2015

Africans In Guangzhou : A Cultural Analysis Of Transnationality Amongst Africans On The Move, Roberto Carlos Castillo Bautista

Lingnan Theses

Over the last three decades, the shifts brought about by the ‘rise of China’ as a key player in global capitalism have had implications in a myriad of places, practices and imaginations. One such implication can be seen in the decade long presence of an African population in the southern city of Guangzhou.

In this dissertation, I look into the dynamics informing this presence by focusing on transnational connections, relations and practices. I take up the call (coming from different fields in the Humanities and Social Sciences) for an analysis of transnationality grounded in the everyday experiences of individuals ‘on …
