Counting The Blades Of Grass: Series, Punctum, And The Averted Gaze In W. G. Sebald's The Emigrants, Lane Glisson
Counting The Blades Of Grass: Series, Punctum, And The Averted Gaze In W. G. Sebald's The Emigrants, Lane Glisson
Dissertations, Theses, and Capstone Projects
W. G. Sebald's novel The Emigrants presents an oblique view of the suppressed history of the Nazi era, through the lives of four emigrants from Germany. Sebald's unique manner of weaving biographical material, evidence, and photographs into his fiction, creates a misty world, neither fact nor fiction, in which the reader is never certain what is true or counterfeit. A series of recurring motifs and visual themes run through all the stories. This work examines how new forms of understanding arise in the spaces between The Emigrants' themes, punctuated by recurring imagery. It examines the nineteenth and twentieth century …
An Investigatory Study Of Relationships Among Selected Theoretical Components Of Letter-Writing Fluency, Pamela C. Reutzel
An Investigatory Study Of Relationships Among Selected Theoretical Components Of Letter-Writing Fluency, Pamela C. Reutzel
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
Research that shows the need for letter-writing fluency as a foundation for being able to attend to higher-level thinking skills in writing calls for more research as to what the components of letter-writing fluency actually are and how they are related to writing efficiency. To study the components of letter-writing fluency, four assessments were used to evaluate 49 kindergarten students’ letter writing abilities. These assessments were made in December of their kindergarten year. The first assessed subskill was letter-naming fluency (LNF), which has previously been shown to be predictive of reading ability. The other two subskills that were assessed focus …
Twenty Years' Evolution Of North Korean Migration, 1994-2014: A Human Security Perspective, Jiyoung Song
Twenty Years' Evolution Of North Korean Migration, 1994-2014: A Human Security Perspective, Jiyoung Song
Research Collection School of Social Sciences
Over the past two decades, there have been notable changes in North Korean migration: from forced migration to trafficking in women, from heroic underground railways to people smuggling by Christian missionaries. The migration has taken mixed forms of asylum seeking, human trafficking, undocumented labour migration and people smuggling. The paper follows the footsteps of North Korean migrants from China through Southeast Asia to South Korea, and from there to the United Kingdom, to see the dynamic correlation between human (in)security and irregular migration. It analyses how individual migrant's agency interacts with other key actors in the migration system and eventually …
The Effects Of Linguistic Distance And Lingua Franca Proficiency On The Stake Taken By Acquirers In Cross-Border Acquisitions, Ilya Cuypers, Gokhan Ertug, Jean-Francois Hennart
The Effects Of Linguistic Distance And Lingua Franca Proficiency On The Stake Taken By Acquirers In Cross-Border Acquisitions, Ilya Cuypers, Gokhan Ertug, Jean-Francois Hennart
Research Collection Lee Kong Chian School Of Business
We study the effects of linguistic distance and lingua franca proficiency on the equity stake taken by acquirers from 67 countries in 59,092 acquisition targets in 69 host countries. We theorize and find that acquirers take lower equity stakes in foreign targets when linguistic distance and differences in lingua franca proficiency between them are high, and take higher stakes when the combined lingua franca proficiency of the parties is high. We also find that linguistic and cultural distance reduce the impact of the combined lingua franca proficiency of the parties on the level of equity taken, which shows that the …

Improvements in image understanding technologies aremaking it possible for computers to pass traditionalCAPTCHA tests with high probability. This suggests theneed for new kinds of tasks that are easy to accomplishfor humans but remain difficult for computers. In thispaper, we introduce Fluency CAPTCHA (FluTCHA), anovel method to distinguish humans from computersusing the fact that humans are better than machines atimproving the fluency of sentences. We propose a wayto let users work on FluTCHA tests and simultaneouslycomplete useful linguistic tasks. Evaluation studiesdemonstrate the feasibility of using FluTCHA todistinguish humans from computers.

Rclinker: Automated Linking Of Issue Reports And Commits Leveraging Rich Contextual Information, Tien-Duy B. Le, Mario Linares Vasquez, David Lo, Denys Poshyvanyk
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Links between issue reports and their corresponding commits in version control systems are often missing. However, these links are important for measuring the quality of a software system, predicting defects, and many other tasks. Several approaches have been designed to solve this problem by automatically linking bug reports to source code commits via comparison of textual information in commit messages and bug reports. Yet, the effectiveness of these techniques is oftentimes suboptimal when commit messages are empty or contain minimum information; this particular problem makes the process of recovering traceability links between commits and bug reports particularly challenging. In this …

Active Semi-Supervised Defect Categorization, Ferdian Thung, Xuan-Bach D. Le, David Lo
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Defects are inseparable part of software development and evolution. To better comprehend problems affecting a software system, developers often store historical defects and these defects can be categorized into families. IBM proposes Orthogonal Defect Categorization (ODC) which include various classifications of defects based on a number of orthogonal dimensions (e.g., symptoms and semantics of defects, root causes of defects, etc.). To help developers categorize defects, several approaches that employ machine learning have been proposed in the literature. Unfortunately, these approaches often require developers to manually label a large number of defect examples. In practice, manually labelling a large number of …
Characterizing Silent Users In Social Media Communities, Wei Gong, Ee-Peng Lim, Feida Zhu
Characterizing Silent Users In Social Media Communities, Wei Gong, Ee-Peng Lim, Feida Zhu
Research Collection School Of Computing and Information Systems
Silent users often constitute a significant proportion of an online user-generated content system. In the context of social media such as Twitter, users can opt to be silent all or most of the time. They are often called the invisible participants or lurkers. As lurkers contribute little to the online content, existing analysis often overlooks their presence and voices. However, we argue that understanding lurkers is important in many applications such as recommender systems, targeted advertising, and social sensing. This research therefore seeks to characterize lurkers in social media and propose methods to profile them. We examine 18 weeks of …
Giving Power Its Due: The Powerful Possibilities And The Problems Of Power With Deliberative Democracy And English Language Learners. A Response To "Deliberative Democracy In English-Language Education: Cultural And Linguistic Inclusion In The School Community", Jarrod S. Hanson
Democracy & Education
The use of deliberation with English Language Learners presents possibilities to both improve language learning, but also expand the potential for civics education for all students. In particular, this response examines the issue of power to extend Liggett's (2014) arguments for using deliberative democracy with English Language Learners and provides practical suggestions on how to address issues of power and improve civic education.

The Wind Of Madness And The Search For Order Through Disorder In Partition Narratives, Sarah C. Longenderfer
The Wind Of Madness And The Search For Order Through Disorder In Partition Narratives, Sarah C. Longenderfer
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
By drawing on Partition theory such as Pandey (2001), Daiya (2008), and Butalia (2000) as well as madness theory by Foucault (1971), this paper explores the way madness is described in Partition texts through characters attempting to regain control over their lives and assert their new national identities. Coinciding with decolonization of British rule, the Partition of India (1947) divided India and Pakistan and led to genocidal violence during the migrations of both Hindus and Muslims to their respective countries. I utilize three short stories by Saadat Hassan Manto: "Colder than Ice" (1950), "The Return" (1948), and "Toba Tek Singh" …
Still, Emily Claire Humberson
Still, Emily Claire Humberson
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
Still is a collection of poetry written for the ENGL470 Seminar: Poetry course, taught by Professor Pineda. The word "still" itself has two definitions: not moving or making a sound, and nevertheless, all the same. The collection seeks to quietly reconcile the inevitable end of all things, while still reporting the difficulties of reaching such a conclusion. The collection blends both narrative and lyric elements. The poems straddle the range between surreal and realistic imagery, juxtaposing the visions of dreams with the hardships of reality. Still explores change over time, witnessed in interpersonal relationships and an aging landscape. It works …
Bending Gender: Perversions In Children's Literature, D. Claire Winkler
Bending Gender: Perversions In Children's Literature, D. Claire Winkler
Departmental Honors & Graduate Capstone Projects
This paper examines the role literary perversions play in children's literature. Specifically, it examines the role they play within the books Charlotte's Web and Bridge to Terabithia. Moreover, it is particularly interested in examining how literary perversions of gender--that is, representations of gender that fall outside of the normative standard of society--effect the narratives and characters of the books in question. The presence of this form of literary perversion in children's books is fascinating because childhood is one of the only times gender fluidity is acceptable. Yet, children are also being prepped for the roles they will be expected …
The Indonesian Verbal Suffix "-Nya"; Nominalization Or Subordination?, Philippe Grangé
The Indonesian Verbal Suffix "-Nya"; Nominalization Or Subordination?, Philippe Grangé
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The suffix nya is one of the most frequent and polysemic suffixes in Indonesian. It can provide definite determination and topicalization. The "Verb nya", which often appears in a topicalized subject Noun Phrase (NP), is generally labelled as a deverbal noun. Nevertheless, many syntactic constraints set it apart from Indonesian deverbal nouns. "Verb nya" must be complemented by a NP, which can easily be reconstructed as a former subject: a sentence is topicalized and thus becomes a noun clause, generally the subject of the main clause Verb Phrase (VP). I argue that "Verb nya" is a subordinate noun clause, almost …

A Case Study Of Professional Coach-Client Communication., Scott Shank
A Case Study Of Professional Coach-Client Communication., Scott Shank
Honors Theses
Organizations increasingly embrace coaching as a core process to improve employee learning, increase overall performance, and develop leaders. Extant research on coaching is increasing, yet communication-based theories are underrepresented in the literature despite the fact that coaching is fundamentally discursive in nature. Further, although the coaching literature suggests that coaching conversations contribute to client identity growth and potential transformation, studies that specifically explore such activities are underrepresented in existing scholarship. Further, there lacks sufficient research examining how coaching contributes to the ongoing identity development of the coaches themselves. To fill this gap, this qualitative study explored the role coaching plays …
Bridging Theories Of Phonological Awareness For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children: Perspectives From Verbotonal Specialists In The United States, Jazmin Rambeau
Bridging Theories Of Phonological Awareness For Deaf And Hard Of Hearing Children: Perspectives From Verbotonal Specialists In The United States, Jazmin Rambeau
Honors Theses
Approaching literacy instruction for children who are deaf and hard of hearing is one of the most significant challenges within global education because there are various evidence-based theories in the literature as to why children who are deaf and hard of hearing often manifest impaired reading abilities compared to children with normal hearing, and how they may acquire literacy skills differently. This study aims to identify agreements within the literature regarding the role of phonological awareness in literacy acquisition for children who are deaf and hard of hearing, and how tools such as the Verbotonal method of auditory therapy may …
The Thesis Of Norm Transformation In The Theory Of Mass Atrocity, Paul Morrow
The Thesis Of Norm Transformation In The Theory Of Mass Atrocity, Paul Morrow
Genocide Studies and Prevention: An International Journal
Theoretical accounts of genocide and mass atrocity commonly embrace the thesis of norm transformation. This thesis holds, first, that individual and institutional participation in such crimes is at least partially explained by transformations in basic norms that structure social and political life. It holds, second, that preventing future occurrences of such crimes requires changing norms that currently govern the actions of particular individual and institutional actors. This paper clarifies, defends, and extends the thesis of norm transformation. It clarifies this thesis by providing a general account of the nature and dynamics of norms. It defends this thesis against charges of …

"Kasi" And "Bikin"; Two Causative Strategies In Melayu Tenggara Jauh (Southwest Maluku, Indonesia), Aone Van Engelenhoven
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This paper discusses the causative constructions found in Melayu Tenggara Jauh 'Far Southeast Malay' (MTJ), which is used as lingua franca in Southwest Maluku. MTJ encodes causatives by means of MTJ features four periphrastic constructions with the verbs bikin 'do/make' and kasi 'give' that signal whether or not the CAUSER (Kemmer and Verhagen 1994) is involved in or has control over the caused event.

Neuter Gender In The Languages Of Aru, Antoinette Schapper
Neuter Gender In The Languages Of Aru, Antoinette Schapper
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
This paper examines gender agreement in three little-known languages of the Aru Islands and places them within the larger pattern of "neuter gender" in eastern Indonesia. For each language, I look first at the variety of agreement targets that are controlled by gendered nouns. Secondly, I look at the semantics of nouns that control agreement. I show that whilst having a strongly semantic base involving animacy, gender in Aru languages is a grammatical category in which many nouns denoting certain types of entities that lack discernable biological animacy are assigned to the same gender as that of animate referents. I …
Causative Constructions In Woirata, Kisar Island (Southwest Maluku, Indonesia), Nazarudin Nazarudin
Causative Constructions In Woirata, Kisar Island (Southwest Maluku, Indonesia), Nazarudin Nazarudin
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
Woirata (or Oirata, see Van Engelenhoven in this volume) is closely related to Fataluku (Timor-Leste) and belongs to the Timor-Leste subgroup of the Timor-Alor-Pantar language family (TAP) together with Makalero and Makasai (Schapper, Huber, and Van Engelenhoven 2012). It has about 1,566 speakers. Taber (1993) suggests that there are 24 languages in Southwest Maluku of which 23 are Austronesian; Woirata is the only non-Austronesian language in the area. It is interesting to research in how far Woirata has been influenced by Austronesian languages. Because the Woirata and other people who live on Kisar Island, like the Meher, are using Melayu …
The Notion Of "Adjective" In Dhao; A Language Spoken In Eastern Indonesia, Jermy I. Balukh
The Notion Of "Adjective" In Dhao; A Language Spoken In Eastern Indonesia, Jermy I. Balukh
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
It is cross-linguistically defined that adjective is a word category that typically denotes quality and attributes. This category basically falls into semantic properties denoting age, dimension, values, and colours. They also indicate human propensities, physical properties, and speed. Syntactically, adjective typically functions as noun modifiers. However, many adjectives also share features with verbs and/or nouns. This makes adjectives not easy to define. Therefore, morphological and syntactic accounts are required, in addition to semantics, to define the prototypical characteristics of adjectives. This paper has shown that majority of lexemes denoting adjectival properties in Dhao share features with verbs. Although the prefix …
Grammatical Relations And Grammatical Categories In Malay; The Indonesian Prefix "Men-" Revisited, Johnny Tjia
Grammatical Relations And Grammatical Categories In Malay; The Indonesian Prefix "Men-" Revisited, Johnny Tjia
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
The lexical roots of Malay are flexible with regard to their grammatical categories, which presents a problem in providing grammatical evidence for their category determination. This paper attempts to propose the use of affixes as one way to deal with the issue. Data from Indonesian and Ambon (Malay) language are among others given for clarification. The grammatical evidence from Indonesian active meN-, together with other affixes, are revisited as they can contribute to our understanding of the matter.
Children's Use Of Bahasa Indonesia In Jakarta Kindergartens, Bernadette Kushartanti, Hans Van De Velde, Martin Everaert
Children's Use Of Bahasa Indonesia In Jakarta Kindergartens, Bernadette Kushartanti, Hans Van De Velde, Martin Everaert
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
At a very young age children living in Jakarta use both Colloquial Jakarta Indonesia and Bahasa Indonesia. The children's first and most used language is Colloquial Jakarta Indonesia. In the formal school setting Bahasa Indonesia is frequently used and stimulated on a daily basis, and the learning process of Bahasa Indonesia is accelerated. The question addressed in this article is: how do these children choose from their repertoire of language varieties at this stage of language development? In our study 63 children (aged three to five), were interviewed in a formal and an informal situation in three playgroups and kindergartens. …
Responsive Turns In Indonesian Informal Conversation, M. J. Van Naerssen
Responsive Turns In Indonesian Informal Conversation, M. J. Van Naerssen
Wacana, Journal of the Humanities of Indonesia
People have all sorts of expectations about how interlocutors will and should behave linguistically when engaged in a conversation. These conversational norms are usually implicit and are sometimes difficult to master in a language that is new to you. This paper presents a model of different types of responses in informal conversation, illustrated with Indonesian examples. It builds upon the conversation analytic notion of preference; distinguishing preferred - or constructive - responses and dispreferred - or competitive - responses. The model is meant as a tool to cross-linguistically compare response behaviour to gain insight in language specific expectations about interaction …
