The Linguistic Adventures Of Leo And Neo, Kenneth Hopkins Apr 2015

The Linguistic Adventures Of Leo And Neo, Kenneth Hopkins

Manuscripts

The problems forced upon civilization by the development of languages are numerous, baffling, and elusive of solution. These problems, furthermore, have never been comprehensively catalogued, and thus have escaped detection by the masses who labor on, under the resulting handicaps, oblivious of the fact that their every action is molded, inhibited, guided and otherwise affected by language...

Panel: The Architectural Touch: Gestural Approaches To Library Search, Andreas Kratky, Virginia Kuhn, Susan Luftschein, Michaela Ullmann

Digital Initiatives Symposium

This panel centers on the LibViz project—a touch and gesture-based interface that allows users to navigate through library collections using visual queries—and the issues surrounding such efforts. The LibViz project, for which we have done initial research and constructed a prototype, aims to increase the discoverability of library materials, particularly those of non-textual objects, which are difficult to access via traditional search and which do not circulate. Many collections are currently preparing large scale digitizing of threedimensional objects and it is imperative to develop appropriate methods to work with this new kind of data. The established methods only do a …

老人与海: The Cultural Classroom Handbook, Jessica Ann Brumley

Mahurin Honors College Capstone Experience/Thesis Projects

Ernest Hemingway’s The Old Man and The Sea has gained global recognition as a literary masterpiece. This novel, although written by an American, is set in Cuba and features cultural elements from Latin America as well as North America. Classrooms around the world use this novel as a means of teaching English to second-language learners because of the comparatively simple grammatical structure and concise word choice.

One specific instance of this is the Chinese classroom, where some students have used The Old Man and the Sea as an introduction to American literature. Hemingway’s work, which has since been translated …

Family Planning, Pregnancy, And Birth In Guatemala: Maya Women And Modern Healthcare, Kelsay Payton Apr 2015

Family Planning, Pregnancy, And Birth In Guatemala: Maya Women And Modern Healthcare, Kelsay Payton

Honors Theses

Within Maya populations in rural Guatemala, childbearing is considered a sacred and spiritual experience, in addition to a physical one. This country is home to some of the highest rates of maternal and infant mortality in Latin America, along with the largest disparities in health care, primarily between the indigenous Maya and ladino women (Schooley 2009). The use of biomedical reproductive services remains surprisingly low among the Maya, while it is continually rising in the ladino populations. To increase the overall reproductive health care in these indigenous communities, attention must be given to the understanding of Maya’s beliefs, therefore enabling …

The lack of consistent wide-spread media coverage of recent events in North America involving violence against Native Americans and African Americans in the U.S., missing and murdered indigenous women, led the authors to a thoughtful discussion about the similar and parallel issues shared by our people. Although the deaths of Michael Brown (August 9, 2014, Ferguson, MO), Eric Garner (July 17, 2014, NY), and Sandra Bland (July 13, 2015, TX) were nationally covered news events; the deaths of Misty Upham, Blackfeet (October 5, 2014, WA); Native American activist Rexdale Henry, Choctaw (July 14, 2015, MS), and Christina Tahhahwah, Comanche (November …

How Can Neuroimaging Inform Our Treatment Of Reading Disorders In Children With Learning Disabilities?, Joseph Rueter Apr 2015

How Can Neuroimaging Inform Our Treatment Of Reading Disorders In Children With Learning Disabilities?, Joseph Rueter

Special Education Masters Program Theses

Neuroimaging technology in the last two decades has allowed a direct 3 dimensional view of the processing activity in an individual’s brain while completing a particular cognitive task enabling the characterization of functional brain areas and typical processing pathways. This meta-synthesis examines current studies of the neuroimaging of reading in both typical proficient readers, and individuals with developmental dyslexia and examines how these studies can inform our treatment of reading disorders. Functional Imaging studies with fMRI, DTI, MEG, and EEG techniques have documented that the brains of individuals with dyslexia have distinct physical differences and an atypical processing of reading …

Language (Re)Appropriation In The Francophone Caribbean Region: Challenges And Perspectives, Marky Jean-Pierre Apr 2015

Language (Re)Appropriation In The Francophone Caribbean Region: Challenges And Perspectives, Marky Jean-Pierre

Doctoral Dissertations

The development of the subject depends on whether the subject re-appropriates his/her creation or remains alienated by it. In Material Culture and Mass Consumption. Daniel Miller describes the challenges and perspectives for the subject to re-appropriate his/her creation and what happens when he or she remains alienated by it. Miller combines the work of Hegel, Marx, Simmel, and Munn in an attempt to frame his theory of culture. The key concept that reverberates throughout Miller’s reflection on Hegel, Marx, Simmel, and Munn is his notion of “objectification;” however, an analysis of his work suggests that perhaps Miller’s greatest achievement …

The role of English as an international language has made its teaching a growing field, especially in French-speaking Africa where the need for English is significant. Despite its unofficial status in countries like Senegal, English is used in all fields of activity and plays an important role in professional areas such as tourism, business, science and technology.Specialization of content in English-teaching curricula is currently increasing, and authors agree that English is not to be studied simply for its own sake, but rather for its communicative uses. EFL teachers are expected to help students develop fluency in English and become familiar …

Migrant Labor In The Arabian Gulf: A Case Study Of Dubai, Uae, Sara Hamza Apr 2015

Migrant Labor In The Arabian Gulf: A Case Study Of Dubai, Uae, Sara Hamza

Pursuit - The Journal of Undergraduate Research at The University of Tennessee

This research explores the topic of labor migration in Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) states – Bahrain, Oman, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates -- and seeks to determine how the subjugation of migrant laborers is initiated and perpetuated. The kafala (sponsorship) system has played a central role in the rapid economic development in the GCC states. Though it has allowed the Gulf States to obtain the resources necessary to develop both economically and cosmetically, the system has had an array of undesirable byproducts that have significantly altered the texture of Gulf societies. The kafalasystem promotes the …

The Effect Of Auditory Pitch Range On Sustained And Selective Attention: A Comparison Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Typically-Developing Children, Hyun-Jung Lee Apr 2015

The Effect Of Auditory Pitch Range On Sustained And Selective Attention: A Comparison Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder And Typically-Developing Children, Hyun-Jung Lee

Open Access Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of pitch range (i.e., high vs low) in a simple, musical context on sustained and selective attention in children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and typically-developing (TD) children. This study also explored the effect of different types of distracting sounds on selective attention in both groups. Existing research indicates that music-based interventions or background music during cognitive tasks can promote attention in children with ASD. However, no published study has yet explored the effects of specific musical elements, such as pitch range, on attention in children with and without ASD. …

Speech Codes Theory, Gerry Philipsen, Tabitha Hart Apr 2015

Speech Codes Theory, Gerry Philipsen, Tabitha Hart

Faculty Publications

Speech codes theory is an account of communication as a deeply cultured human activity. The theory, and the empirical research on which it is built, demonstrate that the kinds of local knowledge people deploy to talk about—to characterize, interpret, and rationalize—their communicative conduct is indeed local, particular knowledge, and that such knowledge can be discovered and described through systematic inquiry. This article describes the key theoretical commitments of speech codes theory, identifies its six propositions, illustrates research within the tradition, and assesses its purposes.

A Redemption Of Meaning In Three Novels By Italo Calvino, Dominick J. Knowles Apr 2015

A Redemption Of Meaning In Three Novels By Italo Calvino, Dominick J. Knowles

English and Creative Writing Honors Papers

In this thesis I present three readings of Italo Calvino’s later novels: Invisible Cities (1972), If on a winter’s night a traveler (1979), and Mr. Palomar (1983). My primary aim is to defend Calvino against dominant scholarly interpretations that position him as a Postmodern nihilist, a literary trickster interested solely in toying with the mechanics of language. My analysis of Calvino’s work re-envisions him as a special breed of Postmodernist concerned with humanity’s ability to create spaces for meaning in spite of an indifferent cosmos. Drawing from psychoanalytic theory, cognitive science, analytic philosophy, and phenomenology, I synthesize my own critical …

An Optimality-Theoretic Analysis Of Syllable Structure In Qassimi Arabic, Sarah Soror Al Motairi Apr 2015

An Optimality-Theoretic Analysis Of Syllable Structure In Qassimi Arabic, Sarah Soror Al Motairi

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This thesis examines syllable structure in Qassimi Arabic (QA), a Najdi dialect spoken in Al-Qassim region in Saudi Arabia. Syllable-related phenomena in QA have not been fully addressed and understood because QA has not received attention in the available literature on syllable structure within Arabic dialects. Thus, the present study aims to provide an analysis of syllable structure in QA and to contribute to the current research on Arabic syllable structure. Adopting the framework of Optimality Theory, this study explores the effect of high vowel deletion on syllable structure and the treatment of superheavy syllables in QA. Results confirm three …
