Introduction To Functions And Generality Of Logic. Reflections On Frege's And Dedekind's Logicisms, Hourya Benis Sinaceur, Marco Panza, Gabriel Sandu

MPP Published Research

This book examines three connected aspects of Frege’s logicism: the differences between Dedekind’s and Frege’s interpretation of the term ‘logic’ and related terms and reflects on Frege’s notion of function, comparing its understanding and the role it played in Frege’s and Lagrange’s foundational programs. It concludes with an examination of the notion of arbitrary function, taking into account Frege’s, Ramsey’s and Russell’s view on the subject. Composed of three chapters, this book sheds light on important aspects of Dedekind’s and Frege’s logicisms. The first chapter explains how, although he shares Frege’s aim at substituting logical standards of rigor to intuitive …

Growing The Practice Of Vocal Sketching, S. Delle Monache, D. Rocchesso, S. Baldan, Davide Andrea Mauro Phd

Computer Sciences and Electrical Engineering Faculty Research

Sketch-thinking in the design domain is a complex representational activity, emerging from the reflective conversation with the sketch. A recent line of research on computational support for sound design has been focusing on the exploitation of voice, and especially vocal imitations, as effective representation strategy for the early stage of the design process. A set of introductory exercises on vocal sketching, to probe the communication effectiveness of vocal imitations for design purposes, are presented and discussed, in the scope of the research-through-design workshop activities of the EU project SkAT-VG.

Perfecting Pamela: Samuel Richardson's Final Revisions To His Earliest Novel, Jennifer S. Elliott Jul 2015

Perfecting Pamela: Samuel Richardson's Final Revisions To His Earliest Novel, Jennifer S. Elliott

Theses & Honors Papers

This author details Richardson’s revision process as he edits his first novel Pamela as the last thing he does before dying. There are three chapters detailing Richardson’s motives behind revising his first novel and his actual revision process, which included three main techniques—substitution, addition, and deletion. Motives considered and argued were: moral purpose and criticism received from others—especially analyzing Shamela, a satire of Pamela—which undermines the morality that Richardson had hoped Pamela accomplished. At the end of the essay, there is an extensive chart complied by the author, spanning a total of 55 pages, of all of Richardson’s …

Writing The World: Preservice Teachers’ Perceptions Of 21st Century Writing Instruction, Kristine E. Pytash, Elizabeth Testa, Jennifer Nigh

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

The purpose of this mixed-methods study was to explore preservice teachers’ perceptions of integrating technology into writing instruction before and after a methods course and the experiences in a methods course that, according to the preservice teachers, influenced these perceptions. Participants were enrolled in two sections of a Teaching Language and Composition course. Data collected included an adapted Likert-scale pre and posttest survey, and focus group interviews. Preservice teachers self-reported salient course experiences, and also discussed the affordances and tensions they felt in thinking about how to use technology to teach writing. This study has implications for teacher education and …

Collaborative Power: Graduate Students Creating And Implementing Faculty Development Workshops On Multilingual Writing Pedagogy, Dorothy Worden, Brooke R. Schreiber, Lindsey Kurtz, Michelle Kaczmarek, Eunjeong Lee

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

The increasing numbers multilingual students in US universities, whether international students or multilingual citizens and permanent residents, have made it clear that students’ language needs can no longer be relegated to the ‘experts’ in specialized courses or tutoring centers. All faculty will teach multilingual students, yet few faculty have received specialized training to prepare them to work effectively with the multilingual writers in their classrooms. While there is a need for professional development efforts designed to help faculty more effectively teach multilingual writing, institutional divisions between first language (L1) and second language (L2) writing instruction pose challenges for the organization …

Learning To Teach Writing In The Age Of Standardization And Accountability; Toward An Equity Writing Pedagogy, Shannon M. Pella Jul 2015

Learning To Teach Writing In The Age Of Standardization And Accountability; Toward An Equity Writing Pedagogy, Shannon M. Pella

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

Qualitative data from over three years of a lesson study project were analyzed through a situated learning theory lens in order to describe the connections between teacher learning and the variety of situations, or contexts that shaped the learning. The lesson study professional development model included planning, observation, and student data analysis protocols. The lesson study was situated in various middle school classroom settings, which provided multiple learning contexts. Additionally, teacher learning was shaped by the larger socio-political context often comprised of accountability rhetoric, standardization, and testing pressure. This study described how two teachers negotiated balance, or theoretical equilibrium, across …

Originalism As Thin Description: An Interdisciplinary Critique, Saul Cornell Jul 2015

Originalism As Thin Description: An Interdisciplinary Critique, Saul Cornell

Res Gestae

My essay was intended as a critique of originalism from the perspective of intellectual history. I pointed out that originalism lacked a rigorous empirical method for analyzing what texts meant in the past. I suppose in some sense it is flattering that Solum has devoted much of his recent article to an attack on my earlier essay. Of course, flattery aside, it would have been more useful if Solum had stated my thesis correctly. For purposes of clarity, I have juxtaposed Solum’s description of my argument with what my essay actually said. Readers will be able to judge for themselves …

Intertextual Connections In Text Sets: Creating Common Core Curriculum For Middle School Readers, Karissa Anne Finley

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research question was, How can I design a curriculum unit that uses a text set to teach middle school English students to integrate knowledge and ideas as indicated by the Common Core State Standards? The capstone explores the challenges and steps to addressing the Common Core State Standards in reading, focusing especially on eighth grade standards of Integration of Knowledge and Ideas (standards seven through nine). Key influences for this capstone were Wiggins & McTighe (2005) and Cappiello & Dawes (2013). The author develops a multimedia text set unit for eighth grade students, using the short story “Flowers for …

Finding Truth In Cause-Related Advertising: A Lexical Analysis Of Brands’ Health, Environment, And Social Justice Communications On Twitter, Aron Culotta, Jennifer Cutler, Junzhe Zheng Jul 2015

Finding Truth In Cause-Related Advertising: A Lexical Analysis Of Brands’ Health, Environment, And Social Justice Communications On Twitter, Aron Culotta, Jennifer Cutler, Junzhe Zheng

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

Consumers increasingly desire to make purchasing decisions based on factors such as health, the environment, and social justice. In response, there has been a commensurate rise in cause-related marketing to appeal to socially-conscious consumers. However, a lack of regulation and standardization makes it difficult for consumers to assess marketing claims; this is further complicated by social media, which firms use to cultivate a personality for their brand through frequent conversational messages. Yet, little empirical research has been done to explore the relationship between cause-related marketing messages on social media and the true cause alignment of brands. In this paper, we …

Reflections Of Practicing School Principals On Ethical Leadership And Decision-Making: Confronting Social Injustice, Mary E. Gardiner, Penny L. Tenuto Jul 2015

Reflections Of Practicing School Principals On Ethical Leadership And Decision-Making: Confronting Social Injustice, Mary E. Gardiner, Penny L. Tenuto

The Journal of Values-Based Leadership

The study objective was to identify leadership dilemmas of practicing school administrators and their own codes of ethics to inform understandings of ethical decision-making. Ethical decision-making underpins leadership practice, theory, and preparation. Existing models for ethical leadership underplay the importance of social justice ethics in decision-making. The research encompassed a qualitative study based upon the constructivist paradigm. Data were collected in the form of interviews, document analyses, and professional observations with practicing school administrators in public schools. Dilemmas reported were analyzed utilizing ethical leadership theories together with social justice constructs. Results indicate ways practicing school administrators, faculty preparing administrators, and …

Speech Acts And Silencing: A Social Account Of Speech Action And Restrictions On Speech, Casey R. Johnson Jul 2015

Speech Acts And Silencing: A Social Account Of Speech Action And Restrictions On Speech, Casey R. Johnson

Doctoral Dissertations

I develop a new, socially sensitive, account of conversation and assertion. According to traditional speech act theory, an utterance is a particular conversational move, like a question or a promise, when it has a particular kind of force. Traditionally, this force – called illocutionary force – has been understood in terms of various conditions, norms, and constraints that utterances either meet or fail to meet. This tradition has led some philosophers to attempt to account for this force by way of a constitutive norm. In my first two chapters, I argue that this way of understanding conversational moves is misguided, …

Increased Resting-State Functional Connectivity Of Visual- And Cognitive-Control Brain Networks After Training In Children With Reading Difficulties, Tzipi Horowitz-Kraus, Mark Difrancesco, Benjamin Kay, Yingying Wang, Scott K. Holland

Center for Brain, Biology, and Behavior: Faculty Publications

The Reading Acceleration Program, a computerized reading-training program, increases activation in neural circuits related to reading. We examined the effect of the training on the functional connectivity between independent components related to visual processing, executive functions, attention, memory, and language during rest after the training. Children 8–12 years old with reading difficulties and typical readers participated in the study. Behavioral testing and functional magnetic resonance imaging were performed before and after the training. Imaging data were analyzed using an independent component analysis approach. After training, both reading groups showed increased single-word contextual reading and reading comprehension scores. Greater positive correlations between …

‘No Protection Against The H-Bomb’: Press And Popular Reactions To The Coventry Civil Defence Controversy, 1954, N Barnett Jul 2015

‘No Protection Against The H-Bomb’: Press And Popular Reactions To The Coventry Civil Defence Controversy, 1954, N Barnett

School of Law, Humanities and Social Sciences

This article examines British popular and media reactions to America's Bravo test shot in April 1954 and Coventry City Council's subsequent decision to abandon civil defence. The article finds that three key motifs emerged which relate to Britain's broader sense of national identity in the 1950s. First, the controversy formed part of a cultural battle for national identity between a conservative and potentially militaristic culture, and one which was more progressive and opposed war and nuclear armaments. Second, opponents labelled the councillors as Moscow stooges and this revealed underlying anti-communism. Third, reactions engaged with a secular strain of Cold War …

Women In Litigation Literature: The Exoneration Of Mayella Ewell In To Kill A Mockingbird, Julia L. Ernst Jul 2015

Women In Litigation Literature: The Exoneration Of Mayella Ewell In To Kill A Mockingbird, Julia L. Ernst

Akron Law Review

This essay explores numerous factors constraining Mayella Ewell’s actions throughout the novel, particularly with respect to her false accusation of Tom Robinson. Some of the forces bearing down on Mayella include class, gender, race, history, morality, as well as familial, social, and legal dynamics. The jury’s verdict convicting Tom Robinson of rape indicates that Mayella received a much more favorable outcome in the trial than she merited.6 Depictions of Mayella within analyses of the novel have portrayed her in an unfavorable light. However, this essay encourages the reader to dig more deeply into the assumptions one must make about justice, …

Taking Credit And Avoiding Responsibility: The Causes And Career Consequences Of Managers’ Strategic Disclosures, Yamin Hao Jul 2015

Taking Credit And Avoiding Responsibility: The Causes And Career Consequences Of Managers’ Strategic Disclosures, Yamin Hao

Open Access Dissertations

This paper provides evidence on the determinants and career consequences of managers’ strategic causal explanations (attributions) for firm performance. Using new textual analysis algorithms, I identify abnormal attributions and find that managers appear to strategically attribute favorable firm performance to internal factors and poor firm performance to external factors. More importantly, I find that strategic external attributions of poor performance are associated with lower CEO cash-compensation sensitivity and forced turnover likelihood. These findings suggest that managers’ career-related incentives affect their disclosure choices. I also find that abnormal attributions are mitigated by greater analyst following, better corporate governance and greater peer …

Using Technology And Phenology To Increase Students’ Observation Skills, Sondra Tokarczyk Jul 2015

Using Technology And Phenology To Increase Students’ Observation Skills, Sondra Tokarczyk

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research question addressed in this study was, will the use of technology and phenology increase students’ observation skills? The catalysts for this capstone were research using observation as an everyday skill fundamental to all scientific disciplines, and the importance of teaching children how to observe and document their observations. The capstone describes the process of integrating phenology, knowledge of the five senses, and iPad technology to teach students the importance of observation and its relevance to their everyday lives. The author concludes that: 1) although the collected data did not show a significant increase in observations, students’ observations became …
