The Effect Of Altruistic Tendency On Fairness In Third-Party Punishment, Lu Sun, Peishan Tan, You Cheng, Jingwei Chen, Chen Qu Jul 2015

The Effect Of Altruistic Tendency On Fairness In Third-Party Punishment, Lu Sun, Peishan Tan, You Cheng, Jingwei Chen, Chen Qu

Dartmouth Scholarship

Third-party punishment, as an altruistic behavior, was found to relate to inequity aversion in previous research. Previous researchers have found that altruistic tendencies, as an individual difference, can affect resource division. Here, using the event-related potential (ERP) technique and a third-party punishment of dictator game paradigm, we explored third-party punishments in high and low altruists and recorded their EEG data. Behavioral results showed high altruists (vs. low altruists) were more likely to punish the dictators in unfair offers. ERP results revealed that patterns of medial frontal negativity (MFN) were modulated by unfairness. For high altruists, high unfair offers (90:10) elicited …

Global Chaucers: Reflections On Collaboration And Digital Futures, Candace Barrington, Jonathan Hsy

Accessus

Global Chaucers, our multi-national, multi-lingual, multi-year project, intends to locate, catalog, translate, archive, and analyze non-Anglophone appropriations and translations of Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. Since its founding in 2012, this project has rapidly changed in response to scholars’ diverse interests and our expanding discoveries. Almost all these changes were prompted and made possible by our online presence (including a blog and Facebook group), and digital media comprises our primary means for gathering information, disseminating our findings, advertising conferences and events, and promoting the resource to other scholars. Because digital media can help disparate people traverse geographical and linguistic barriers, …

Rebuilding The Slaughter-House: The Cases' Support For Civil Rights, David S. Bogen Jul 2015

Rebuilding The Slaughter-House: The Cases' Support For Civil Rights, David S. Bogen

Akron Law Review

This Article sets forth the Slaughter-House Cases’ support for civil rights. Justice Miller used federalism in order to protect Reconstruction legislatures where significant numbers of African-Americans participated fully for the first time. His recital of the history and purpose of the Civil War Amendments centered on the Amendments’ design to protect African-Americans, and suggested sweeping federal power to accomplish that end. Gutting the Privileges and Immunities Clause compelled the Court to read the Equal Protection Clause broadly, and was indirectly responsible for the reapportionment decisions of the Warren Court. The Slaughter-House Court’s structural analysis and its view of federal protective …

Should Nepal Be A Hindu State Or A Secular State?, Pawan Kumar Sen Jul 2015

Should Nepal Be A Hindu State Or A Secular State?, Pawan Kumar Sen

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

This paper is based on longitudinal public opinion surveys conducted between September 2006 and April 2012. In it I argue that, according to this survey data, the majority of Nepali people still want Nepal to be a Hindu state. However, a significant number of Nepalis wish to see their country as a secular state. The surveys also reveal that the public’s preference toward the Hindu state is not accepted in all sub-national levels; a preference for a secular state is evident in some of the sub-national levels, which cannot be undervalued. This paper also establishes that the public’s opinion on …

Constructing The New Nepal: Religious Billboards In Nepal’S Second People’S Movement, Michael Baltutis Jul 2015

Constructing The New Nepal: Religious Billboards In Nepal’S Second People’S Movement, Michael Baltutis

HIMALAYA, the Journal of the Association for Nepal and Himalayan Studies

Accompanying King Gyanendra’s February First, 2005, efforts to consolidate his loosening grip on national power, the royal Nepali government raised a series of highly visible billboards throughout the cities of the Kathmandu Valley. A small subset of these boards were explicitly religious, encouraging Nepal’s citizens to perform their patriotic bhakti (devotion), karma (action), and dharma (duty). This rhetorical support of a ‘universal’ Hinduism contradicted the inclusivism that was widely regarded as part and parcel of the ‘new Nepal’ and resulted in a contradictory vision of the same: a modern secular nation composed of citizens, rather than of subservient subjects, unified …

Biological Evaluations: Blood, Genes, And Family, Janet L. Dolgin Jul 2015

Biological Evaluations: Blood, Genes, And Family, Janet L. Dolgin

Akron Law Review

The next Part of the Article (Part II) provides a brief overview of the ideology in terms of which society understood the family during the nineteenth, and most of the twentieth, century. Part III then summarizes the increasing readiness of society and of lawmakers since the 1960s, openly to premise delimitations of family on values once associated with the marketplace, but not the home. Parts II and III provide background to Part IV. Part IV, the heart of the Article, focuses on contemporary understandings of family that preserve a central role for the biological correlates of domestic relationships. The Part …

The Eucharist In An Unarticulated World, Tim Sensing Jul 2015

The Eucharist In An Unarticulated World, Tim Sensing

Graduate School of Theology

Ethnographic data from the lived experiences of teenagers participating in the weekly observance of the Eucharist provided rich data for an application of Bakhtinian approaches to discourse in order to inform current practice. Bakhtin’s understanding of dialogism and heteroglossia asserts that all discourse communities are located in historical situations that involve complex interactions. Each utterance takes meaning from its “actual social life.” Bakhtin gives priority to utterances that occur in context and focuses on the intentional negotiation of meaning and interpretation between author and reader, or, in this case, researcher, participant, and community. The research provides opportunity for teenagers to …

A Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Approach Based On Todim And Choquet Integral Within A Multiset Hesitant Fuzzy Environment, Juan-Juan Peng, Jian-Qiang Wang, Huan Zhou, Xiao-Hong Chen Jul 2015

A Multi-Criteria Decision-Making Approach Based On Todim And Choquet Integral Within A Multiset Hesitant Fuzzy Environment, Juan-Juan Peng, Jian-Qiang Wang, Huan Zhou, Xiao-Hong Chen

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Hesitant fuzzy sets (HFSs), which were generalized from fuzzy sets, constrain the membership degree of an element to be a set of possible values between zero and one; furthermore if two or more decision-makers select the same value, it is only counted once. However, a situation where the evaluation value is repeated several times differs from one where the value appears only once. Multiset hesitant fuzzy sets (MHFSs) can deal effectively with a case where some values are repeated more than once in an HFS. In this paper, the new comparison method and corresponding distance of multiset hesitant fuzzy elements …

Impact Of A Teacher Training Program To Increase Cognitively Stimulating Talk: Pretest And Immediate Post-Test Results, Laura E. Fisher

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The literacy skills that students develop in preschool are an imperative aspect of school readiness and later academic success. Research has established that some students begin their educational experience at a disadvantage due to the low socioeconomic status (SES) of their family and, as a result, low levels of conversation between parents and children, restricted access to books, and low values placed on literacy. Past research supports that shared book reading is one of the most beneficial activities in which teachers can partake in order to optimize their students’ language development. The Head Start program is intended to alleviate the …

The Impact Of A Mentoring/Financial Incentive Program On At-Risk High School Students, Sean Timothy Galvin Jul 2015

The Impact Of A Mentoring/Financial Incentive Program On At-Risk High School Students, Sean Timothy Galvin

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This mixed methods study describes some outcomes of "Champions of Wayne," a privately funded mentoring/incentive program at an impoverished high school near Detroit. Over 500 students enroll in the program annually. The program involves providing high school students who choose to participate both adult mentoring and a $200 incentive to improve one's grades each semester. The quantitative component of this study analyzes GPA data, while a multiple case study of six participants explores mentoring relationships and experiences. In a comparison of the GPA of participants versus non-participants, program participants significantly improve their grades when compared to those student who do …

The Relationship Between Bilingualism, Cognitive Control, And Mind Wandering, Leah J. Shulley Jul 2015

The Relationship Between Bilingualism, Cognitive Control, And Mind Wandering, Leah J. Shulley

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The unique linguistic experience of bilingualism purportedly produces cognitive control advantages. Although there is a significant body of evidence supporting this view, there are also several recently published research studies that failed to replicate bilingual advantages. Furthermore, there is some evidence of a publication bias that favors findings supporting a bilingual advantage. The purpose of this study was to address this discrepancy in the literature by examining performance of bilinguals and monolinguals on a variety of cognitive control tasks. A second purpose was to determine how bilinguals are able to achieve better performance if they do indeed have an advantage. …
