Something’S Happening Here: Popular Music Education In The United States, Bryan Powell, Andrew Krikun, Joseph Michael Pignato

John J. Cali School of Music Scholarship and Creative Works

Although the number of opportunities to learn popular music in the United States continues to grow, popular music education (PME) programs remain exceptional at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels of institutionalized music education. This article provides insight into the unique characteristics of a number of PME initiatives currently operating in the United States. A historical background is established to provide context regarding the history of PME in the United States. Additionally, a focus on an expanding landscape for American PME is included, as is an examination of six specific initiatives that are particularly noteworthy. This review of popular music programs, …

Princess On The Margins: Toward A New Portrait Of Madame Élisabeth De France, Maria Spencer Wendeln

Wayne State University Dissertations

Princess on the Margins: Toward a New Biography of Madame Élisabeth de France, moves past the perpetuation of prior biographies on Louis XVI’s sister which make the princess out to be a “virgin martyr” and instead focuses on the princess’s political agency and place with the political culture of the French Revolution.

Examining Barriers With Implementing Augmentative And Alternative Communication In A Midwest School, Ashley Renee Fields Jan 2015

Examining Barriers With Implementing Augmentative And Alternative Communication In A Midwest School, Ashley Renee Fields

Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies

Many speech-language pathologists (SLPs) in a Midwest urban public school system have experienced barriers that prohibit the effective use of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC). The result has left some students with speech language impairments (SLI) without the communication skills for meaningful relationships and success in and out of school. The purpose of this exploratory case study was to determine the perceived barriers of 8 local school SLPs regarding the successful implementation of AAC and their suggestions for addressing the problem. Data were collected from semi-structured interviews with the SLPs. Data collection and analysis were grounded by Ely's conditions of …

An Alternate Ending To An Akkadian Letter-Prayer To Amurrum (Abb 12, No. 99), Alan Lenzi Jan 2015

An Alternate Ending To An Akkadian Letter-Prayer To Amurrum (Abb 12, No. 99), Alan Lenzi

College of the Pacific Faculty Articles

Twenty-five years ago W. H. van Soldt published an interesting letter-prayer from a man named Ardum to the god Amurrum. In this short note, I offer an alternative translation of the prayer’s final sentence, which explains how a bed-ridden man delivered his prayer to the god and granted others the authority to lay the petition before the deity.

Archaeological And Historical Investigations Of The Robert Newsom Farmstead (23cy497), Callaway County, Missouri, James Adam Halpern Jan 2015

Archaeological And Historical Investigations Of The Robert Newsom Farmstead (23cy497), Callaway County, Missouri, James Adam Halpern

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

Scholarly research on slavery in the U.S. has focused on large commercial plantations in the Old South. Yet a majority of slaveholders and nearly half of the enslaved lived in smaller slaveholding houses and family farms (Burke 2010:4). This study helps redress the dearth of research on small slaveholdings through study of the Robert Newsom Farmstead, or "Celia" Site (23CY497), located in Callaway County, Missouri. The research goal is to model the antebellum spatial organization of the landholding, thereby increasing our understanding of slavery at the Newsom site and on non-plantation slaveholdings generally. This was accomplished through collection and analysis …

Horse-Stealing And Man-Hanging: An Examination Of Vigilantism In The Missouri Ozarks, Connie Sue Yen Jan 2015

Horse-Stealing And Man-Hanging: An Examination Of Vigilantism In The Missouri Ozarks, Connie Sue Yen

Graduate Theses/Dissertations

The purpose of this thesis is to determine what factors did or did not have an impact on the formation of the Slickers, the Regulators, and the Sons of Honor, three vigilante organizations that formed in the Missouri Ozarks during the nineteenth century. Primary source documents indicate that vigilante organizations formed in Missouri, and throughout the United States, for a variety of reasons. This study disproves the theory that vigilante violence in the Missouri Ozarks was based on any social or political struggle between an old or new order. This study contributes to our understanding of Ozarks history, as well …

Celebrating Kate: The Criminal-Celebrity Of Sydney Underworld Figure, Kate Leigh, Leigh Straw Jan 2015

Celebrating Kate: The Criminal-Celebrity Of Sydney Underworld Figure, Kate Leigh, Leigh Straw

Arts Papers and Journal Articles

Combining historical study with cultural criminology, this paper analyses the criminal-celebrity of Sydney underworld figure Kate Leigh. It seeks to demonstrate how the three main factors of public resonance—crime type, context and image—created the celebrated criminality of Leigh. Without public resonance, Leigh would have simply remained another criminal within society. An important element of Leigh’s celebrated criminality was her ability to manage a public image that was accepted within the impoverished, working-class communities of eastern Sydney. Leigh became a criminal icon through an entrepreneurial style based on the anti-authoritarian and egalitarian values of working-class life in eastern Sydney. Criminal-celebrity theory …

Satisfaction Data Collected By Email And Smartphone For Emergency Department (Ed) Patients: How Do Responders Compare To Non-Responders?, Jeffrey Charles Strickler

MUSC Theses and Dissertations

The University of North Carolina ED developed an electronic survey method (Bivarus) which sends a web-link by email or text to patients. This study evaluated this method by considering differences between the key characteristics (age, gender, disposition, race, ethnicity, and payor classification) of the responders and non-responders to this survey from July to December 2013 (22,750 records). An evaluation of the key characteristics showed no difference related to age and disposition, but differences related to sex, race, ethnicity, and payor classes. This difference could therefore lead to under representation of the patient experience from those populations.

Bringing The World Inside: British Modernism And Taste – Gustatory, Social, And Aesthetic, Michael David Becker Jan 2015

Bringing The World Inside: British Modernism And Taste – Gustatory, Social, And Aesthetic, Michael David Becker

Open Access Dissertations

As nineteenth-century scientific and industrial developments in food processing were increasingly applied on larger scales, and to a greater diversity of food items, modernity made its mark on the early twentieth-century consumer’s daily foods. In addition to industrial and scientific developments, World War I and World War II brought significant changes to food production, distribution, and consumption as populations suddenly worried about the availability, allocation, and quality of food items. Early twentieth-century novels demonstrate a preoccupation with the newly modernized and altered foods and explore how food behaviors and tastes change during the period.

This project examines literary representations of …

Editor’S Introduction, Ada Long Jan 2015

Editor’S Introduction, Ada Long

Journal of the National Collegiate Honors Council Online Archive

A typical issue of JNCHC contains a Forum that focuses on a matter of particular significance to honors educators and then presents research essays that are unrelated to the topic of the Forum. This issue, by contrast, has a thematic wholeness. While the first eight essays address specifically the topic of “Honors and the Future of the Humanities,” the two research essays—one of which is a Portz-Award winner—illustrate that the humanities, which all agree play an essential role in honors, are not just alive but robust.

SOLON Law, Crime and History (previously SOLON Crimes and Misdemeanours: Deviance and the Law in Historical Perspective)

Since the 1970s historians interested in the impact of changing social and economic conditions on health outcomes have studied record collections that contain information about adult stature. Fluctuations in mean height by year of birth are potentially informative because they should reflect conditions encountered in utero and during the early years of life. Yet, like all historical records, surviving height series are not necessarily representative of the population as a whole. They are also subject to factors that might change over time. This article uses Tasmania nineteenth century criminal record series to explore these issues in greater depth. It is …

Valuing Illusion: A Comparative Analysis Of Jean Baudrillard And Eihei Dogen, Nicholas Boynton Jan 2015

Valuing Illusion: A Comparative Analysis Of Jean Baudrillard And Eihei Dogen, Nicholas Boynton

USF St. Petersburg campus Master's Theses (Graduate)

The purpose of this thesis is to explore the overlapping themes, ideas, and strategies of Jean Baudrillard and Eihei Dogen. The rationale for such an endeavor lies in the absence of any comparison of Baudrillard and Dogen, when there is a plethora of scholarship that places their respective philosophies into conversation with post-structuralism and Zen Buddhism. I approached this project from the perspective of examining how Dogen’s enigmatic ideas helped in understanding Baudrillard’s complex theory, and vice-versa. By looking more closely at each philosopher’s writing, themes, and concerns, I highlight ideas from separate and distinct socio-historical situations and find ways …

Jimbo's Handy Handbook Of Historiography : The Historiography Of The United States, James Anthony Schnur Jan 2015

Jimbo's Handy Handbook Of Historiography : The Historiography Of The United States, James Anthony Schnur

USF St. Petersburg Campus Faculty Publications

Schnur, a graduate student in history at USF at the time, created this booklet as a study guide to assist in preparations for his comprehensive examinations in the USF History M.A. program. Although most of the focus is on historians prior to the 1970s, this booklet does provide biographical vignettes that may assist those interested in learning about various schools of thought in the American historical profession. Most of the information in this handbook came from Schnur's notes in various classes, as well as other helpful sources, such as the Dictionary of Literary Biography.

Sediment Organic Carbon Fate And Transport In A Fluviokarst Watershed In The Bluegrass Region, Admin Husic Jan 2015

Sediment Organic Carbon Fate And Transport In A Fluviokarst Watershed In The Bluegrass Region, Admin Husic

Theses and Dissertations--Civil Engineering

Mature karst topography is well recognized within the hydrology and geology communities to include subterranean fluid pathways that act as turbulent conduits conveying fluid from surface stream sinks called swallets to sources called springs. However, we find that little knowledge has been reported with regards to the transport and fate of terrestrially-derived sediment organic carbon (SOC) within karst watersheds. This study investigated the hypothesis that karst pathways could act as biologically active conveyors of SOC that temporarily store sediment, turnover carbon at higher rates than otherwise considered, and recharge depleted SOC back to the surface stream within the fluvial system. …

Scholars Of Distinction And The Development Of Educational History In The United States, Karl M. Lorenz Jan 2015

Scholars Of Distinction And The Development Of Educational History In The United States, Karl M. Lorenz

Education Faculty Publications

The paper describes the accomplishments of a select number of distinguished scholars who advanced the cause of the history of education. The evolution of this field of study and inquiry followed its own unique path in the United States, and that at certain moments its trajectory was influenced by the thoughts and actions of celebrated professionals. Each individual contributed in a distinctive way, by either deepening or broadening the study of educational history in educator preparation programs, or by encouraging disciplined research and research-related activities in the area. In this latter endeavor, scholarship was often enhanced by making resources available …
