Human Capital, Immigration, And Growth: A State-Level Dynamic Panel Study, William R. Cooper
Human Capital, Immigration, And Growth: A State-Level Dynamic Panel Study, William R. Cooper
Graduate Theses and Dissertations (2019 - present)
This study examines whether who immigrates, rather than how many, matters for state economic growth in the United States. It integrates a policy-relevant proxy for skill (H-1B approvals) into an augmented Solow framework that separates immigration's quantity channel from its human capital channel and estimates dynamic effects in a balanced quarterly panel of 50 states (2010 to 2023 ). The empirical strategy estimates a two-step difference GMM Arellano-Bond model that reinforces identification using a double/debiased machine learning (DML) variant that orthogonalizes high-dimensional nuisance components via cross-fitting. This design targets the distinct roles of immigrant headcount versus skill in per capita …
Defending The Homeland: An Archaeoethnodemographic (Aed) Analysis Of Population Dynamics And Settlement Patterns In The Navajo Dinétah, Ad 1720–1745, Kurt Mantonya
Dissertations and Doctoral Documents, University of Nebraska-Lincoln, 2023–
This dissertation presents an innovative archaeoethnodemographic (AED) analysis of Navajo population dynamics during the Middle Period (AD 1720−1745) of the Gobernador Phase in the Dinétah, the ancestral Navajo homeland in northwest New Mexico. During this critical quarter-century, intensified Ute and Comanche slave-raiding and Spanish military expeditions forced the Diné to abandon traditional dispersed settlement patterns in favor of defensive aggregation around fortified pueblitos—small masonry defensive structures built on boulder-tops and mesa-rims throughout the region.
The study employs an AED framework that systematically integrates archaeological site analysis, ethnographic household organization data, historical documentation, and demographic modeling to reconstruct population dynamics during …

Mississippi Dugout Canoes: An Ethnohistorical And Archaeological Analysis From 1538-1900s, Sean N. Mccraw
Master's Theses
Watercraft remains an overlooked aspect of Southeastern historical and archaeological scholarship. A more complete understanding has the potential to illuminate aspects of the human social process in anthropology and a more accurate construction of historical events. Recent Developments in Southeastern Archaeology, published in 2012, mentions the importance of the connections that water travel facilitated, but the work does not mention any serious investigation. While history has investigated the role native trails played in the development of the region, and while Andrew Lippmann has illustrated the agency that boat skills and watercraft gave Natives in the coastal North American region during …
The Matter Of Production And Forms Of Sharing: Transformations Of Food Economies In Lowland South America, Clarice Cohn, Diego Madi Dias, Adriana Athila
The Matter Of Production And Forms Of Sharing: Transformations Of Food Economies In Lowland South America, Clarice Cohn, Diego Madi Dias, Adriana Athila
Tipití: Journal of the Society for the Anthropology of Lowland South America
This special issue of Tipití presents a critical examination of ‘food economies’ and their transformations within Indigenous communities in Lowland South America. Stemming from seminal ideas in its Anthropology that directly or indirectly discuss ‘food’ (and much of what goes along with it), this edited volume focuses on the materiality of relations as a strategic lens for understanding contemporary Indigenous lives and their transformations, according to how they are perceived by Indigenous peoples themselves and others such as health care professionals and the state. The articles explore how Indigenous foodways—from acquisition to consumption, including sharing and distribution—reveal key aspects …
The Dynamics Of Terrorism And Counter-Terrorism: The South Africa Experience, Oluranti Samson Afowowe
The Dynamics Of Terrorism And Counter-Terrorism: The South Africa Experience, Oluranti Samson Afowowe
Journal of Terrorism Studies
Defining Terrorism within the context of South African government promulgated Terrorism Act of 1967 as’ action(s) that endanger the maintenance of law and order’, innocuously suggest that the phenomenon of terrorism in South African political space is not a recent development. This study examines the historical, socio-economic and demographic dis-equilibrium as indicative factors of terrorism within the context of South Africa. Theoretical postulations on the phenomenon of terrorism within the context of South Africa state experience also engaged the attention of this study. Attempts are made to identify the nexus between social relationships and the nature, essence and political dimensions …
Navigating The Ethical Landscape: A Field Reflection On The Dynamics Of Informed Consent In Qualitative Research, Khim Raj Subedi, Peshal Khanal
Navigating The Ethical Landscape: A Field Reflection On The Dynamics Of Informed Consent In Qualitative Research, Khim Raj Subedi, Peshal Khanal
The Qualitative Report
Our paper analyses the practical dimensions of obtaining informed consent in qualitative research, drawing on the reflective insight from fieldwork conducted as part of a study on the professional identity of primary (elementary) teachers in community schools in Nepal. Our study builds on and extends the understanding of informed consent as a legal and ethical requirement (Kadam, 2017) while considering the complexities of fieldwork. Drawing on interactions with six teachers and using the first author's detailed fieldnotes and reflexive memos, our study explores the challenges researchers face in securing consent during qualitative interviews. We argue that the consent-seeking process should …
Impact Of Community Factors On Naloxone Overdose Reduction In Ohio, Theophilus Oduro Frimpong
Impact Of Community Factors On Naloxone Overdose Reduction In Ohio, Theophilus Oduro Frimpong
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The opioid crisis in Ohio, driven by fentanyl, persists due to inequitable access to naloxone despite its proven effectiveness. This study examined how socioeconomic status (SES), race/ethnicity, population density, and hospital availability per capita predicted naloxone overdose reversals (dependent variable) in Ohio. Social-ecological theory guided this quantitative historical correlational analysis of Ohio’s Project DAWN index data (N = 5,280). Inclusion criteria included individuals ages 18 to 65 with naloxone-related overdose reversals (dependent), naloxone distribution (moderator), and community factors (independent). Multiple linear regression results showed that SES (p >.50), race/ethnicity (% White, p = .588; % Black, p = .495; % …

Islamic Political Anti-Theology: A Discursive Practice Of Contingency Beyond Sovereign Politics, Jason Andrus
Islamic Political Anti-Theology: A Discursive Practice Of Contingency Beyond Sovereign Politics, Jason Andrus
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Contributing to the field of political theology from outside the European Christian tradition, this dissertation develops a description of the distinct logics that Islamic theology generates from its metaphysical assumptions. These logics in turn make possible a discourse of political anti-theology where politics operates through contingency rather than sovereignty. Political theology scholarship has excavated how modern politics derives from secularized Christian theological concepts—particularly transcendent sovereignty. This study demonstrates that Islamic theology's absolute insistence on divine transcendence (tawhid) produces something fundamentally different: a politics that renders sovereign authority conceptually impossible. I identify this discursive practice of political anti-theology through …

Sinkholes contributed to persistent human inhabitation of the northern Yucatán peninsula of Mexico for more than two millennia. Building on previous work on the use of sinkholes central to the town of Tahcabo and elsewhere in the Maya area, this study presents pollen, soil carbon isotope, radiocarbon, and artifactual evidence from four geomorphic features. They include the perennially wet cenote situated in the town center and three dry sinkholes (rejolladas) located in the commonly held lands (ejido) of the town. These features demonstrate striking variability in multispecies engagements with and within sinkholes, especially over the past …

Growing A Church Worship Band, Charmaine Landrum
Growing A Church Worship Band, Charmaine Landrum
Masters Theses
Many churches either leave the music to the professionals, or let untrained musicians blunder their way through the service, distracting their congregations. Little research has been done pertaining to the development of average or inexperienced musicians for Sunday Services. Considering the shift in worship music and technology, there is a need to train the next generation of worship team members. There is a lack in research pertaining to the best methods for training untrained musicians who want to volunteer but may not be ready for the platform. One particular church, Revolution Church in Canton, Georgia, is solving their dilemma by …

A Comparative Analysis Of K–12 Public School Music Teacher Burnout From 1986 To 2025, Veronica A. Rovatti
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This historical comparative analysis assessed five different sources to understand the effect stress and burnout have had on public school music educators over the last fifty years. In the United States, music educators are facing stress and burnout in their teaching careers, which can result in attrition from their profession. In this research study, four studies pertaining to music educator burnout are analyzed through a narrative compilation of research already established. Also analyzed is a supplementary recent article providing contemporary relevance. The criteria for source selection included studies or articles that primarily researched stress and burnout among K-12 public school …

Curriculum Insertion Proposal For The Academic-Military Education: The Rising Of Unmanned Aerial Systems (Uas/Drones) In Modern Combat, Tiago Marques Dos Santos Filho
Journal of Peace, Conflict, and Security Studies
The use of drones in the latest generation of combat has revolutionized military operations, offering new tactical and strategic-operational capabilities. Based on the author's practical experience and reference literature, using UAS in urban combat, peacekeeping missions, and jungle operations has proven to be extremely effective, providing significant advantages in terms of intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance, and air support. Equipped with high-resolution cameras and advanced sensors, drones allow the collection of real-time critical information, assisting quick and accurate decision-making. This background raises the question of whether it is relevant to formally address this topic in academic-military undergraduation. The main hypothesis, that the …
Agricultural Extension In Ireland: A Century Of Continuity And Change, Mícheál Ó Fathartaigh, Áine Macken-Walsh, Monica Gorman
Agricultural Extension In Ireland: A Century Of Continuity And Change, Mícheál Ó Fathartaigh, Áine Macken-Walsh, Monica Gorman
European Journal of Food Drink and Society
In 1901, Ireland had the largest publicly funded professional extension service – agricultural scientists helping farmers to farm better – relatively, in the world. Utilising a wide range of historical sources and contemporary data, this paper provides a snapshot of the education and work of Irish advisors and their extension activities then and now. It identifies what has changed and what has not, showing key influences on Ireland’s current advisory services. Education for advisors 100 years ago was characterised by gender segregation, with less capacity and diversity. Continuity in the work of advisors then and now is shown in a …
Why The Irish Don’T Eat Offal, Niall Toner
Why The Irish Don’T Eat Offal, Niall Toner
European Journal of Food Drink and Society
In the past fifty years or so, the diverse and colourful displays of animal offal and organ meats that used to be seen in butchers’ shop windows in Ireland, as well as in the UK and America, have all but disappeared. In Ireland, which has seen a gastronomic renaissance in more recent times, these traditional foodstuffs appear to have been slow to return to our plates. But have offal and organ meats a place in the future of the cuisine, and can the increased consumption of offal and organ meats, produced locally, contribute towards a more sustainable food production system, …

“Add What You Think Proper”: Exploring The Culinary Narrative Of Newbridge House Through The Cobbe Recipe Book (1806–1838) And Archive, Cathal Dowd Smith
European Journal of Food Drink and Society
Newbridge House, in north County Dublin, was built in 1747 by Archbishop of Dublin, Charles Cobbe to designs by prominent architect James Gibbs. Having arrived in Ireland in 1717, acquiring land and ecclesiastical promotion, Cobbe settled in north Dublin and built a house in the Palladian vision for his family. In 1755 his heir and sole surviving son Thomas married Lady Elizabeth ‘Betty’ Beresford, daughter of the 1st earl of Tyrone. Together Thomas and Lady Betty assembled an art collection at Newbridge, extending the house for that purpose. Included in that extension were more bedrooms, but, importantly here, increased servants’ …

Who Intervenes When Jews Or Muslims Are Persecuted? Replicating A Profile Pattern From Holocaust Rescuers, Magnus Lindén, Fredrik Björklund, George R. Wilkes
Heroism Science
This study examined whether the characteristics that motivated non-Jews to rescue Jews during the Holocaust also predict morally courageous intentions among contemporary high school students. A sample of Swedish students (N = 231) completed a survey measuring parental role modelling, empathic concern, risk-taking, and identification with outgroups, and then indicated whether they would intervene to help persecuted Jews and Muslims in various hypothetical scenarios. All factors were significant predictors of intention to intervene; however, parental role modelling lost significance in a hierarchical regression analysis. Risk-taking accounted for the largest proportion of explained variance, followed by empathic concern, with a significant …

Importance: Studies suggest that everolimus may reduce the risk of rejection, cardiac allograft vasculopathy (CAV), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and cytomegalovirus (CMV) after heart transplant. Everolimus use is controversial because of data demonstrating higher infection deaths when everolimus is introduced de novo after transplant. It is unclear whether everolimus is safe and effective when initiated at 6 months posttransplant in children, a population in which median graft survival is limited to 15 years and randomized clinical trials are lacking.
Objective: To evaluate the safety and efficacy of everolimus combined with low-dose tacrolimus to prevent major adverse transplant events (MATEs) in …
Orientalist Discourse And The Hermeneutics Of Literature-Religion Relations: Critical Perspectives On American Models, Mohammad Humaydi Al-Malki Dr.
Orientalist Discourse And The Hermeneutics Of Literature-Religion Relations: Critical Perspectives On American Models, Mohammad Humaydi Al-Malki Dr.
Journal of Arabic Sciences and Humanities
This study explores how Orientalism has critically shaped Western perceptions of Arabic literature and Islam. It begins by analyzing the evolving role of religion in Western thought - shifting from ecclesiastical control to individual interpretation-then traces how European Orientalists approached Islamic civilization with both religious and economic motives. After World War II, American institutions inherited Orientalist frameworks, repurposing them to align with political interests. This shift led to cultural and Middle Eastern studies replacing deep literary engagement in academia. Given the lack of Arabic literature specialists, the research spotlights three prominent American scholars: Grunebaum, Yaroslav, and Susan. The study concludes …

Home Health Agency Ownership As A Predictor Of 30-Day Readmissions In Illinois, Tonya Gray
Walden Dissertations and Doctoral Studies
The health outcome of reducing 30-day Medicare readmissions continues to be a constant measurement of quality patient care. Post-acute services, like home health care, play a vital role in national efforts to improve patient care, contributing to cost reductions. This quantitative study explored the relationship between home health agency (HHA) ownership (for-profit vs. nonprofit) and Medicare 30-day readmissions by race, age, and gender. The three research questions addressed the independent variable, type of HHA ownership (for-profit vs. nonprofit), and the impact on the dependent variables, 30-day Medicare readmissions by race, age, and gender in Illinois. Binomial logistic regression was used …

A Phenomenological Study Of Parent And Educator Perceptions Of Inclusive Education For Individuals With Disabilities, Karin Elizabeth Kawagoe
Doctoral Dissertations and Projects
This phenomenological qualitative study, grounded in disability theory, explores the lived experiences of parents and educators regarding inclusive education. At present, laws and regulations promote the inclusion of individuals with disabilities. Inclusion has evolved since the mid-1950s. The biblical foundation for inclusion draws on the life of Jesus. This study examined how concepts of belonging, willingness, perceptions of inclusion, and evidenced based practices manifest in perceptions of advocacy, empathy, flexibility, and collaboration. Data was collected using interviews with parents and educators. Thematic analysis revealed that parents’ experiences centered on advocacy, resilience, empathy, and compassion, reflecting feelings of isolation and being …
