Beginnings, Nehal J. Shah

Akesis

The beginning of one thing signifies the end of another – for one to start, another must end. With that said, under karmic and Hindu belief, we are constantly in a cycle of beginnings, and endings, until we achieve “moksha” – true oneness with God. Furthermore, within each cycle, there are four stages of life that one hopes to go through, carrying out the ideal goals and progress of each existence. Therefore, this life ultimately is a new beginning to an old soul – a soul that has traveled and journeyed upon eons of time to find happiness, spirituality, completeness …

"Ushering" In The Fulfillment Of Prophecy, Alison M. Pulliam Dec 2015

"Ushering" In The Fulfillment Of Prophecy, Alison M. Pulliam

Aidenn: The Liberty Undergraduate Journal of American Literature

During the 19th century, a phenomenon known as “Holy Land mania” was sweeping the United States. Americans were intrigued by the state of the Holy Land and whether or not this state matched the images described in biblical prophecy (Robey 62). Interest in Israel’s condition invaded many aspects of American life, including literature. Looking through the lens of historical criticism, it is easy to see how authors of this time period fed on the “Holy Land mania” to include references to prophecy and the Middle East in their writings. In particular, critic Molly K. Robey accurately points out in …

Evaluation Of The Impact Of Instructional Methodology Of The Who/Unicef Breastfeeding Training On Maternal–Child Nurse Knowledge Gain And Perception Of Breastfeeding Support, Shakira Lita Ismay Henderson Dec 2015

Evaluation Of The Impact Of Instructional Methodology Of The Who/Unicef Breastfeeding Training On Maternal–Child Nurse Knowledge Gain And Perception Of Breastfeeding Support, Shakira Lita Ismay Henderson

Open Access Dissertations

Nurses are the largest group of healthcare professionals who support breastfeeding and lactating mothers in maternity facilities. Yet, the most effective instructional methodology to deliver the 20-hour WHO/UNICEF breastfeeding training for maternal-child nurses is still not determined. Breastfeeding knowledge gain and perception of breastfeeding support are two key modifiable outcomes of breastfeeding training that are commonly identified in the nursing literature. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the impact of instructional methodology (classroom versus computer-based) on the maternal–child nurse’s breastfeeding knowledge gain and perception of breastfeeding support for nurses that participated in the 20-hour WHO/UNICEF breastfeeding training. A …

Trm9-Catalyzed Trna Modifications Regulate Global Protein Expression By Codon-Biased Translation, Thomas J. Begley, Wenjun Deng, I. Ramesh Babu, Dan Su, Shanye Yin, Peter C. Dedon Dec 2015

Trm9-Catalyzed Trna Modifications Regulate Global Protein Expression By Codon-Biased Translation, Thomas J. Begley, Wenjun Deng, I. Ramesh Babu, Dan Su, Shanye Yin, Peter C. Dedon

Biological Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Post-transcriptional modifications of transfer RNAs (tRNAs) have long been recognized to play crucial roles in regulating the rate and fidelity of translation. However, the extent to which they determine global protein production remains poorly understood. Here we use quantitative proteomics to show a direct link between wobble uridine 5-methoxycarbonylmethyl (mcm5) and 5-methoxy-carbonyl-methyl-2-thio (mcm5s2) modifications catalyzed by tRNA methyltransferase 9 (Trm9) in tRNAArg(UCU) and tRNAGlu(UUC) and selective translation of proteins from genes enriched with their cognate codons. Controlling for bias in protein expression and alternations in mRNA expression, we find that loss of …

Testing The Selectivity Of Pesticide Effects On Natural Enemies In Laboratory Bioassays, Kaushalya G. Amarasekare, Peter Shearer, Nicholas J. Mills Dec 2015

Testing The Selectivity Of Pesticide Effects On Natural Enemies In Laboratory Bioassays, Kaushalya G. Amarasekare, Peter Shearer, Nicholas J. Mills

Agricultural and Environmental Sciences Faculty Research

The toxic effects of older classes of pesticides on natural enemies are typically acute and exposure usually occurs through direct contact with foliar residues. However, older chemistries are being replaced by newer classes of pesticides that can cause sublethal effects in addition to direct mortality. We developed a set of life table response protocols to quantify the effects of multiple routes of exposure to pesticides on individual-level life history parameters of predators and parasitoids. We then integrated the data into population-level endpoint estimates of population growth rates using stage-structured population models. For this study, we evaluated the impacts of five …

Eet-Dependent Potentiation Of Pulmonary Arterial Pressure: Sex-Different Regulation Of Soluble Epoxide Hydrolase, Sharath Kandhi, Jun Qin, Ghezal Froogh, Houli Jiang, Meng Luo, Michael S. Wolin, An Huang, Dong Sun

NYMC Faculty Publications

We tested the hypothesis that suppression of epoxyeicosatrienoic acid (EET) metabolism via genetic knockout of the gene for soluble epoxide hydrolase (sEH-KO), or female-specific downregulation of sEH expression, plays a role in the potentiation of pulmonary hypertension. We used male (M) and female (F) wild-type (WT) and sEH-KO mice; the latter have high pulmonary EETs. Right ventricular systolic pressure (RVSP) and mean arterial blood pressure (MABP) in control and in response to in vivo administration of U46619 (thromboxane analog), 14,15-EET, and 14,15-EEZE [14,15-epoxyeicosa-5(z)-enoic acid; antagonist of EETs] were recorded. Basal RVSP was comparable among all groups of mice, whereas MABP …

Comparative Effects Of Intranasal Neuropeptide Y And Hs014 In Preventing Anxiety And Depressive-Like Behavior Elicited By Single Prolonged Stress, Esther L. Sabban, Lidia I. Serova, Lishay G. Alaluf, Marcela Laukova, Chandana Peddu

NYMC Faculty Publications

Stress triggered neuropsychiatric disorders are a serious societal problem. Prophylactic treatment or early intervention has great potential in increasing resilience to traumatic stress and reducing its harmful impact. Previously, we demonstrated proof of concept that intranasal administration of neuropeptide Y (NPY) or the melanocortin receptor four (MC4R) antagonist, HS014, prior to single prolonged stress (SPS) rodent post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) model, can prevent or attenuate many PTSD associated impairments. Here, we compare effects of NPY or HS014 given 30 min before or immediately after SPS stressors on development of anxiety, depressive-like behavior and associated biochemical abnormalities. SPS triggered anxiety on …

Background: Admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) may disrupt parent-infant interaction with adverse consequences for infants and their families. Several family-centered care programs promote parent-infant interaction in the NICU; however, all of these retain the premise that health-care professionals should provide most of the infant's care. Parents play a mainly supportive role in the NICU and continue to feel anxious and unprepared to care for their infant after discharge. In the Family Integrated Care (FICare) model, parents provide all except the most advanced medical care for their infants with support from the medical team. Our hypothesis is that …

Physical Activity And Aging Research: A Bibliometric Analysis, A.M. Müller, P. Ansari, N. Ale Ebrahim, S. Khoo

Research Publications (2011 to 2015)

Physical activity and aging research has burgeoned in the past few decades. Despite the increase in scholarly publications no attempts have been made to summarize the publication landscape and to identify works that had great impact to physical activity and aging research. We conducted a bibliometric analysis and collected publication data from 1980 to February 6, 2015 in the Web of Science Core Collection. Of the overall 9,935 publications most were published after 2007 and almost 60% were in the category of Geriatrics and Gerontology or Sport Sciences. Highly cited publications (n = 45) were mostly authored by researchers from …

Postmodernism And Budhism: A Postmodern Woman In A Modernizing Land, Ruthanne Joy Wenger Hughes

Senior Theses

Religion and postmodernism are two paradigms that guide my experience of life. Although it is not necessarily intuitive, these two paradigms do intersect and inform each other, shaping the way I engage with the world. With this understanding, I spent the Spring 2015 semester in the Kingdom of Bhutan and examined my time through a postmodern lens, writing a travel blog at www.bhutanbricolage.weebly.com that mediates my experiences there and my thoughts about Buddhism and postmodernism.

Vulnerability And Resistance: An Evaluation Of Hostile Takeover Defenses Proposed By: Carissa Wilson, International Business & Business Economics, Carissa Laurel Wilson

Senior Theses

Within the context of mergers and acquisitions (“M&A”), hostile takeovers comprise a complex and pivotal area of study. It is hostile takeovers, rather than friendly ones, that give rise to the need for most buy- and sell-side tactics related to strategic M&A. This paper focuses primarily on sell-side tactics, or “target defenses,” used to deflect undesired takeover attempts and prevent changes in corporate control. It will attempt to present a high level, comprehensible, and comprehensive listing of defensive tactics in the target arsenal, with references to related case law.

Target defenses developed preemptively, or before an official takeover offer has …
