Inter-Organizational Network Effects On The Implementation Of Public Health Services, Glen P. Mays
Inter-Organizational Network Effects On The Implementation Of Public Health Services, Glen P. Mays
Health Management and Policy Presentations
Background: The Affordable Care Act created new incentives for hospitals, insurers, public health agencies, and others to contribute to disease prevention and health promotion activities, potentially changing inter-organizational relationships and expanding implementation of strategies that improve population health. This study uses data from the 1998-2014 National Longitudinal Survey of Public Health Systems to examine: (1) the extent and nature of change in inter-organizational contributions to public health activities; (2) whether network changes attenuate or exacerbate disparities in public health implementation across communities; and (3) how network changes affect preventable mortality and resource use.
Methods: We follow a longitudinal cohort of …

The Colbert Report aired its final episode on December 18, 2014.1 Nine years earlier, on the first episode, Stephen Colbert coined the word “truthiness.” Truthiness satirized contemporary disinterest in empirical information in a country increasingly “divided between those who think with their head and those who know with their heart.” Truthiness was not just the Merriam-Webster word of the year. Over the past decade, it has been the unspoken mantra of reporters who give equal time to climate science denialists, faith healers, and vaccine refusers. When Justices of the Supreme Court decide questions of scientific or empirical fact—such as whether …

Faculty Perspectives Of A School-Based Mental Health Program In A Rural School District, Jennifer Lynn Massey
Doctor of Education in Teacher Leadership Dissertations
School-based mental health centers provide promising solutions to the nationwide problem of high school dropouts and help students tackle the many barriers that may not only impede their health and well-being, but also their chances for completing high school (Center for School, Health, and Education, 2014). Therefore, gaining and understanding the perspectives of educators will influence the course initiative. The study showed that the services were needed because every participant (n=130) had experienced students who exhibited behaviors associated with mental health problems in the classroom or school environment. Duties regarding the provision of counseling services and behavior-related issues were perceived …

Human Rights States And Societies: A Reflection From Kenya, Willy Mutunga
Human Rights States And Societies: A Reflection From Kenya, Willy Mutunga
The Transnational Human Rights Review
A human rights state is conceptualized as a liberal democratic state with a social democratic content, the modern day version of the capitalist welfare state. With the “collapses” of communism and neoliberalism, the paradigms of human rights and social justice have taken a center state. The birth of transformative constitutions and transformative constitutionalism linked to modern and comprehensive Bills of Rights have enriched the intellectual, ideological, and political debates of human rights and social justice paradigms. On one hand they have the ingredients of mitigating neo-liberalism while on the other hand they reflect some of the features of the paradigms …

Fan Perceptions Of Selling Alcoholic Beverages At A College Football Stadium, Danielle E. Hennessy
Fan Perceptions Of Selling Alcoholic Beverages At A College Football Stadium, Danielle E. Hennessy
Honors Theses
Consuming alcohol while watching a sporting event has become a tradition within the sport commnnity. Almost one in ten sports fans leave major league stadiums with a blood alcohol level over the legal limit, with 40% of spectators consuming alcohol during the game (Lopatto, 2011). Due to this tradition, many colleges and universities have struggled to answer the question, should alcohol be sold at our athletic events? To answer this question research has been done on many factors including binge drinking, violence and safety, alcohol control policies, tailgating and attendance.

On The Use Of The Linear Interaction Energy Method To Predict Affinities Of Charged Aromatic Ammines To Naturally Occurring Clay Minerals, Milinda A. Samaraweera
Doctoral Dissertations
This study presents the use of the linear interaction energy (LIE) method as a predictive tool to approximate the free energies of sorption of organic cations to naturally occurring clay mineral montmorillonite. One objective of this thesis is to explore the applicability and the accuracy of LIE, originated in the biochemistry field, as a predictive tool to estimate the free energies of sorption of organic cations to naturally occurring aluminosilicates. For this purpose, a set of charged aromatic amines sorbing to a prototypical homoionic clay montmorillonite (MMT) with calcium ions were modeled using molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. As the LIE …

Indigenous Rights Before The Inter-American Court Of Human Rights : A Call For A Pro Individual Interpretation, Valerio De Oliveira Mazzuoli, Dilton Ribeiro
Indigenous Rights Before The Inter-American Court Of Human Rights : A Call For A Pro Individual Interpretation, Valerio De Oliveira Mazzuoli, Dilton Ribeiro
The Transnational Human Rights Review
In its traditional conception, international law regulates relations between sovereign states. This definition is challenged by current developments of international law, especially in the area of human rights. The human person is arguably a bearer of rights and duties under international law. However, recognizing this individual legal personality is not enough. International bodies and treaties need to acknowledge that individuals are subjects of international law within a pluralistic world. In other words, the law of nations must crystalize the idea that individuals are, with all their cultural differences, subjects of international law. The Inter-American Court of Human Rights recognizes this …
The Relationship Between Human Rights And Judicial Globalization, Klodian Rado
The Relationship Between Human Rights And Judicial Globalization, Klodian Rado
The Transnational Human Rights Review
There are numerous academic writings about the actors, factors, and mechanisms that shape and drive human rights at national, transnational, and international levels. However, the relationship between human rights and the process of judicial globalization remains underexplored in recent scholarship, and the purpose of this study is to explore such a relationship and its effects. First, we provide a brief theoretical background of both human rights and judicial globalization concepts, and then, we focus on the relationship between them. By investigating existing empirical data, we uncover how judicial globalization is effecting and shaping human rights through various mechanisms and their …

Future shifts in phytoplankton composition and productivity are anticipated given that continuing changes are expected in environmental conditions such as temperature, the partial pressure of CO2 (pCO2) and light climate, all of which regulate phytoplankton communities and their physiology through bottom-up control. Culture experiments revealed that future (elevated) pCO2 had no effect on Thalassiosira weissflogii in the absence of environmental stressors, whereas growth rates drastically decreased under future pCO2 when cells were grown under light and temperature stress. Reduction in growth rates and a smaller decline in cellular photosynthesis under high pCO2 were associated with 2- to 3-fold increases in …
Academic Duty And Academic Freedom, Amy Gadja
Academic Duty And Academic Freedom, Amy Gadja
Indiana Law Journal
On December 31, 1915, the newly formed American Association of University Professors (AAUP) and its Committee on Academic Freedom and Academic Tenure accepted a set of guidelines designed to shape the organization and its work to protect academics against the termination power of their employer-universities. The “General Declaration of Principles,” drafted by approximately a dozen educators who were called from universities across the country, begins with a decided focus on the rights of individuals within the academy: “The term ‘academic freedom’ has traditionally had two applications,” the language reads at the start, “to the freedom of the teacher and to …
Cbt Group Intervention To Increase Cpap Adherence Among Veterans With Sleep Apnea: A Pilot Investigation, Katie Patricia Lang
Cbt Group Intervention To Increase Cpap Adherence Among Veterans With Sleep Apnea: A Pilot Investigation, Katie Patricia Lang
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Sleep Apnea (SA) is gaining increased attention among military populations due to the increasing prevalence rates (40-60%) and risk of serious health complications (i.e., cognitive decline, stroke) when untreated. Unfortunately, adherence to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP; the gold standard treatment) is chronically low. This study examined the efficacy of a 6-week CBT group intervention to increase CPAP adherence among veterans diagnosed with SA and prescribed CPAP treatment. A final sample of 35 veterans was randomly assigned either to treatment as usual (TAU) or TAU plus the CBT group intervention. Participants completed various self-report measures and a therapist-administered cognitive screening …
The Social Value Of Academic Freedom Defended, J. Peter Byrne
The Social Value Of Academic Freedom Defended, J. Peter Byrne
Indiana Law Journal
In his recent book, Versions of Academic Freedom: From Professionalism to Revolution, Stanley Fish renewed his arguments for an “it’s just a job” account of academic freedom, begun in his 2008 book, Save the World on Your Own Time. He claims that academic freedom consists of nothing more than the conditions necessary to follow the established criteria for scholarship and teaching within each discipline. He complains chiefly against the invocation of academic freedom to protect or glorify political advocacy by academics. There is a lot in Fish’s account to admire and agree with. The appropriate sphere of academic freedom needs …
The Government’S Lies And The Constitution, Helen L. Norton
The Government’S Lies And The Constitution, Helen L. Norton
Indiana Law Journal
The government’s lies can be devastating. This is the case, for example, of its lies told to resist legal and political accountability for its misconduct; to inflict economic and reputational harm; or to enable the exercise of its powers to imprison, to deploy lethal force, and to commit precious national resources. On the other hand, the government’s lies can sometimes be helpful: consider lies told to thwart a military adversary or to identify wrongdoing through undercover police work. The substantial harms threatened by some government lies invite a search for ways to punish and prevent them. At the same time, …
Incentivizing The Protection Of Personally Identifying Consumer Data After The Home Depot Breach, Ryan F. Manion
Incentivizing The Protection Of Personally Identifying Consumer Data After The Home Depot Breach, Ryan F. Manion
Indiana Law Journal
The breach of payment card systems at the Home Depot in 2014 resulted in the theft of a wealth of information. This Note will examine the facts and legal consequences of the Home Depot breach under three separate frameworks. First, this Note will examine the Home Depot’s responsibilities arising under existing data breach notification statutes. Second, this Note examines the Home Depot’s potential liability if the recent bill introduced by Senator Leahy of Vermont proposing a federal data breach notification framework becomes law; ultimately, however, this Note finds that state notification statutes fail to adequately protect consumers, and Senator Leahy’s …

Thermally Evolved & Separated Composition Of Atmospheric Aerosols: Development And Application Of Advanced Data Analysis Techniques For A Thermal Desorption Aerosol Gas Chromatograph (Tag), Yaping Zhang
McKelvey School of Engineering Graduate Student Theses & Dissertations
Atmospheric organic aerosols are composed of thousands of individual compounds, interacting with climate through changes in aerosol optical properties and cloud interactions, and can be detrimental to human health. Aerosol mass spectrometry (MS) and gas chromatography (GC)-separated MS measurements have been utilized to better characterize the chemical composition of this material that comes from a variety of sources and experiences continuous oxidation while in the atmosphere. This dissertation describes the development of a novel rapid data analysis method for grouping of major components within chromatography-separated measurements and first application using thermal desorption aerosol gas chromatograph (TAG) – MS data. Chromatograms …
Endogenous Protection In Subarachnoid Hemorrhage, Eric Milner
Endogenous Protection In Subarachnoid Hemorrhage, Eric Milner
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Vasospasm-induced delayed cerebral ischemia (DCI) remains a major source of morbidity in patients with aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH). Moreover, cognitive dysfunction is the primary driver of poor long-term outcome in SAH survivors; modeling such deficits preclinically is thus key for mechanistic and translational investigation. We hypothesized that activating innate neurovascular protective mechanisms by conditioning may represent a novel therapeutic approach against SAH-induced DCI, short-term, neurological deficits, and long-term neurocognitive deficits; and, secondarily, that the neurovascular protection it provides is mediated by endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS) and hypoxia-inducible factor 1α (HIF-1α).In Experiment 1, wild-type C57BL/6 mice were subjected to hypoxic …
Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 Envelope Protein Interaction With Host Cell Coreceptor C-X-C Chemokine Receptor Type 4, Jie Zhang
Arts & Sciences Graduate Student Theses and Dissertations
Human Immunodeficiency Virus Type 1 (HIV-1) envelope protein is the sole determinant for viral entry and tropism. The ability of HIV-1 to infect susceptible host cells depends on the ability of its envelope protein to engage host cell receptor CD4 and coreceptor C-C Chemokine Receptor Type 5 (CCR5) and/or C-X-C Chemokine Receptor Type 4 (CXCR4). Most naturally occurring infections start with a single CCR5-tropic virion. In approximately 50% of HIV-1 Clade B infected patients, the viral population spontaneous develops the ability to utilize CXCR4 at a late disease stage, and this coreceptor shift corresponds to a poor prognosis for the …

Ergonomic Analysis Of Mobile Cart–Assisted Stocking Activities Using Electromyography, Sohyung Cho
SIUE Faculty Research, Scholarship, and Creative Activity
Workers in grocery stores are exposed to numerous musculoskeletal risks that can be reduced using assistive devices while performing stocking tasks. A regional grocery store has recently deployed a mobile cart without comprehension of its ergonomic impact on workers, which this article investigates using normalized electromyography data (%MVC). This article studies not only ergonomic impact based on %MVC values but also work performance represented by a muscle force metric (MFM). The results from this study showed highest muscle groups in %MVC and MFM were the erector spinae and triceps. Interestingly, muscle activations on erector spinae were reduced when mobile cart …
