Whose Talk Is Walked? It Decentralizability, Vendor Versus Adopter Discourse, And The Diffusion Of Social Media Versus Big Data, Shaila Miranda, Inchan Kim, Dawei David Wang
Business and Information Technology Faculty Research & Creative Works
Discourse plays a central role in organizing vision and computerization movement perspectives on IT innovation diffusion. While we know that different actors within a community contribute to the discourse, we know relatively little about the roles different actors play in diffusing different types of IT innovations. Our study investigates vendor versus adopter roles in social media and big data diffusion. We conceptualize the difference between the two IT innovations in terms of their decentralizability, i.e., extent to which decision rights pertinent to adoption of an organizational innovation can be decentralized. Based on this concept, we hypothesized: (1) adopters would contribute …

Affordable Care Act 2016 Changes, Marilyn R. Schlake
Affordable Care Act 2016 Changes, Marilyn R. Schlake
Cornhusker Economics
Since enacted in 2010, the Affordable Care Act (ACA) has in some capacity affected nearly all individuals and businesses throughout the United States. With its sweeping legislation, insurance companies, health providers, employers and individuals alike have changed how they operate within the health industry. These changes will continue as more ACA regulations go into effect in 2016 and 2017. Understanding how these changes affect you and your family and business is important to successfully navigate through the evolving ACA regulations.

Focus Of The New Journal Health Professions Education, Henk Schmidt
Health Professions Education
Why is there a need for a new journal in the field of health professions education? The simple answer is that the field is expanding. The number of academics and educators interested in understanding what works in health professions education and why, increases. Existing journals turn down up to 90% of submissions and offer little opportunity for young researchers and educators to master the craft of scientific publishing in close interaction with experienced reviewers. Health Professions Education will therefore offer more extended editorial support to young researchers than is possible for existing journals. We encourage beginning authors to start submitting …

Background: The purpose of this article was to review the literature on lecture effectiveness and to suggest avenues for improvements. Methods: Selective literature review with an emphasis on active learning in the classroom setting. Results: Conventional lectures are effective only to a limited extent in attaining important curriculum objectives. They do not promote critical thinking; student attendance tends to be low and so is cognitive engagement; furthermore, the idea that lectures should and can cover all essential subject matter is false. Moreover, empirical literature on what students actually learn from lectures is lacking. A most fundamental problem of lectures is …
Numerical Investigation Of Parameters Impacting The Wall Thickness Of Carbon Nanotubes Manufactured By Template-Based Chemical Vapor Deposition, Yashar Seyed Vahedein
Numerical Investigation Of Parameters Impacting The Wall Thickness Of Carbon Nanotubes Manufactured By Template-Based Chemical Vapor Deposition, Yashar Seyed Vahedein
Theses
Template-based chemical vapor deposition (TB-CVD) is a versatile technique for manufacturing carbon nanotubes (CNTs) or CNT-based devices for various applications. In this process, carbon is deposited by thermal decomposition of a carbon-based precursor gas inside the nanoscopic cylindrical pores of anodized aluminum oxide (AAO) templates to form CNTs. Experimental results show CNT formation in templates is controlled by TB-CVD process parameters, such as time, temperature and flow rate. Optimization of this process is done empirically, requiring tremendous time and effort. Moreover, there is a need for a more comprehensive and low cost way to characterize the flow in the furnace …

Monitoring Of Breathing Activity Using Smartphone-Acquired Signals, Bersain A. Reyes
Monitoring Of Breathing Activity Using Smartphone-Acquired Signals, Bersain A. Reyes
Doctoral Dissertations
Respiratory rate (RR) and tidal volume (VT) are two parameters that a breathing monitor should provide. Several techniques have been developed for monitoring these parameters in clinical and research settings. However, as being designed for such settings, they employ specialized devices that are not translated easily to everyday use due to their high costs, need for skilled operators, or limited mobility. Hence, there is still a lack of portable monitoring devices that can noninvasively estimate RR and VT on a daily basis for the general population. Among VT and RR monitoring methods, respiratory acoustical and noncontact …
Effect Of Labor Epidural Analgesia With Hydromorphone On Neonatal Neurobehavior And Breastfeeding Behavior In The First 24 Hours Of Life, Cynthia French
Effect Of Labor Epidural Analgesia With Hydromorphone On Neonatal Neurobehavior And Breastfeeding Behavior In The First 24 Hours Of Life, Cynthia French
Doctoral Dissertations
Epidural opioids and local anesthetics may depress the neonatal reflexes necessary for breastfeeding success. Literature review yielded no data for hydromorphone and conflicting results for fentanyl. This study investigated whether breastfeeding effectiveness would be less in infants whose mothers received epidural analgesia with hydromorphone compared with those whose mothers received no analgesia, and whether the total amount of drugs given or the presence of multiple stressful events or interventions would be related to the effectiveness of breastfeeding.
Breastfeeding behaviors were studied in 51 infants whose mothers chose epidural analgesia compared with 51 infants whose mothers chose to have no analgesia. …

Effectiveness Of A Dental Students Stress Management Program, Abdullah M. Alzahem, Henk T. Van Der Molen, Benjamin J. De Boerc
Health Professions Education
The dental education stress effects and sources were explored thoroughly in the literature, but the effectiveness of stress management programs received less attention. This study introduced a new stress management program, named Dental Education Stress Management (DESM) program. It showed its effectiveness in a quasi-experimental pretest-posttest-follow-up-control group design. The new program was based on the principle of psychoeducation and consisted of three 90-min sessions, to teach dental students how to better deal with their stress symptoms and to reduce their general stress level. Two instruments were used to assess the level of stress of the dental students, namely the Dental …
Trash, A Curatorial : An Ethnographic And Visual Study Of Waste In Urban Hong Kong, Anneke Coppoolse
Trash, A Curatorial : An Ethnographic And Visual Study Of Waste In Urban Hong Kong, Anneke Coppoolse
Lingnan Theses
This is an ethnography of waste in the streets of urban Hong Kong and a curatorial inquiry into the significance of its visuality. Presented in the form of a triptych, the dissertation probes and portrays fragments of urban life in Hong Kong, consequently opening up a new vista for intellectual and social engagement at the juncture of aesthetics, lived experiences, and power. While urban density provides for its equivalent in trash, much of Hong Kong’s refuse first lands in the streets. It is thereupon regulated to be rendered invisible through government organisation which corresponds with what Gay Hawkins (2007) calls …

Iron-Dependent Gene Expression In Actinomyces Oris, Matthew P. Mulé, David Giacalone, Kayla Lawlor, Alexa Golden, Caroline Cook, Thomas Lott, Elizabeth Aksten, George A. O'Toole, Lori J. Bergeron
Dartmouth Scholarship
Actinomyces oris is a Gram-positive bacterium that has been associated with healthy and diseased sites in the human oral cavity. Most pathogenic bacteria require iron to survive, and in order to acquire iron in the relatively iron-scarce oral cavity A. oris has been shown to produce iron-binding molecules known as siderophores. The genes encoding these siderophores and transporters are thought to be regulated by the amount of iron in the growth medium and by the metal-dependent repressor, AmdR, which we showed previously binds to the promoter of proposed iron-regulated genes.
Research Advances In Conformity To Peer Pressure: A Negative Side Effect Of Medical Education, Tanya Beran
Research Advances In Conformity To Peer Pressure: A Negative Side Effect Of Medical Education, Tanya Beran
Health Professions Education
Curricula in medical education are intended to impart the knowledge, skills, and attitudes that students will require as physicians to meet patient needs. There are additional unarticulated and implicit messages that inherently emerge in medical education. This paper examines one such message: conformity to peers, whereby individuals repeat inaccurate information reported by peer group members. Empirical evidence from 60 years of social-psychological research demonstrates that this phenomenon of conformity occurs across experimental tasks, cultures, and over time. It has yet to be systematically studied in medical education. Emerging studies from the University of Calgary, Canada, and in collaboration with King …

The design and development of wearable biosensor systems for health and wellness monitoring has garnered lots of attention in the scientific community and the industry during the past decade. When it comes to health and wellness monitoring, accurate measurements, analysis and estimations would be vital. One major challenge in achieving a high performance wearable health monitoring system is motion and noise artifacts. This consideration was the basis for this dissertation. This study presents different algorithms and signal processing techniques to address motion and noise artifact detection and vital signal reconstruction from electrocardiogram/photoplethysmogram recordings. Five vital signals including ECG, PPG, Heart …

The College has been preparing for this event for more than ten years and wishes to share its experience with other regional medical colleges. The process of accreditation per se took less than three years to complete and most of the time was spent to prepare for the process; to build-up capacity in addition to implementing curricular reforms and other requirements that were needed to comply with accreditation standards. In the end of this exercise, the College has earned many benefits as …
From Assessment Cocktail To Assessment Symphony: The Development Of Best Assessment Practices, Hanan M. Al-Kadri
From Assessment Cocktail To Assessment Symphony: The Development Of Best Assessment Practices, Hanan M. Al-Kadri
Health Professions Education
Introduction of the best possible assessment practices is a requirement for any institution seeking to foster excellence in its students. Assessment practices have been assumed to drive students' learning. However the extent of which this driving role of assessment negatively or positively influences attainment of curriculum objectives and educational outcomes is not well known. In an effort to improve assessment practices, assessment has moved from an era of strict implementation of assessment of learning and a dominance of the psychometric theory into a focus on assessment for learning. In the latter view, a cocktail of assessments is proposed to enhance …

Validation Study Of A General Subject-Matter Interest Measure: The Individual Interest Questionnaire (Iiq), Jerome I. Rotgans
Health Professions Education
Importance: Interest is considered a significant educational construct. A validated instrument that can reliably be used to measure interest across different subject domains is however not available. Objective: To report the findings of two studies that were conducted to test the validity and reliability of a newly designed Individual Interest Questionnaire (IIQ). Design: Study 1 was a construct validation study involving three independent high school samples from different disciplines. In Study 2 the predictive validity of the IIQ was tested by examining how well the IIQ predicts cognitive engagement and on-task behaviors and attitudes of students. Participants: A sample of …
Dialectical Behavior Therapy In College Counseling Centers: Practical Applications And Theoretical Considerations, Carla Chugani
Dialectical Behavior Therapy In College Counseling Centers: Practical Applications And Theoretical Considerations, Carla Chugani
USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations
Authors over the last two decades have discussed the myriad of challenges present in managing college students with severe mental health disorders. During the same time period, Marsha Linehan developed dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) as an empirically sound intervention for individuals with suicidal and self-injurious behaviors and this treatment grew to be an evidence-based practice for a range of challenging clinical issues. I argue that one solution to continued increases in college students who present for treatment to their college counseling centers with difficult-to-treat mental health issues, including but not limited to, borderline personality disorder (BPD), is to implement DBT …

Journal Articles: Pharmacology & Experimental Neuroscience
UNLABELLED: Vasoactive intestinal peptide (VIP) mediates a broad range of biological responses by activating two related receptors, VIP receptor 1 and 2 (VIPR1 and VIPR2). Although the use of native VIP facilitates neuroprotection, clinical application of the hormone is limited due to VIP's rapid metabolism and inability to distinguish between VIPR1 and VIPR2 receptors. In addition, activation of both receptors by therapeutics may increase adverse secondary toxicities. Therefore, we developed metabolically stable and receptor-selective agonists for VIPR1 and VIPR2 to improve pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic therapeutic end points. Selective agonists were investigated for their abilities to protect mice against MPTP-induced neurodegeneration …
Gender And Attitudes About Mental Health Help Seeking: Results From National Data, Douglas Wendt, Kevin Shafer
Gender And Attitudes About Mental Health Help Seeking: Results From National Data, Douglas Wendt, Kevin Shafer
Faculty Publications
Men often express less emotion than women do, are hesitant to express weakness, and seek professional help much less frequently than do their female counterparts. The lack of help seeking is common across characteristics such as age, race, ethnicity, and nationality. Authors used data from the 2006 General Social Surveys mental health module to suggest that the gender gap in help seeking may be rooted in attitudes regarding help-seeking behaviors generally. Using structural equation modeling, we linked vignette type (depression and schizophrenia) to the endorsement of help seeking from informal and formal sources. Men showed similar support for informal help …

I find that when we ask about beginnings, we are really asking about the present. How did a person come to be who he or she is today? As I try to answer this question about myself, I am finding it easier to express myself in diagrams (pen on scratch paper) than in words. Perhaps this is a product of being a medical student; or perhaps it is because beginnings are a complex amalgam of static forces and fluid experiences that cannot be expressed linearly through prose...Enjoy!

I was a weak child from early on, never able to run or play as much as the other kids in my block. Each month I'd visit doctors, trying my best to recover from common colds and coughs. Luckily, all this changed as I matured and in a way I almost began living a "normal life".
However, when it came to deciding what I wanted to be as an adult, I remembered the sick kid I was and how my doctors were always there for me, helping me "find health." This made me realize that I too, could someday be …

At the start of my second year of medical school I was ecstatic to move away from the study of the normal, healthy human body and to begin to immerse myself in the complex mechanisms behind the pathophysiology of disease. I drew this illustration to connect aspects of my personality with the aspects of medicine I was most excited about exploring deeper. This image was drawn with permanent markers on the cover of a binder dedicated solely to preparing for the first part of the medical licensing exam; I looked at this drawing every day as I drove myself closer …
