Plasma Membrane Restricted Rhogef Activity Is Sufficient For Rhoa-Mediated Actin Polymerization, Taofei Yin, Yi I. Wu
Plasma Membrane Restricted Rhogef Activity Is Sufficient For Rhoa-Mediated Actin Polymerization, Taofei Yin, Yi I. Wu
UCHC Articles - Research
The small GTPase RhoA is involved in cell morphology and migration. RhoA activity is tightly regulated in time and space and depends on guanine exchange factors (GEFs). However, the kinetics and subcellular localization of GEF activity towards RhoA are poorly defined. To study the mechanism underlying the spatiotemporal control of RhoA activity by GEFs, we performed single cell imaging with an improved FRET sensor reporting on the nucleotide loading state of RhoA. By employing the FRET sensor we show that a plasma membrane located RhoGEF, p63RhoGEF, can rapidly activate RhoA through endogenous GPCRs and that localized RhoA activity at the …

Objectives: The present study aims to assess mental health literacy (MHL) using a standardised multifaceted 20-item instrument called Mental Health Knowledge Questionnaire (MHKQ) developed by the Chinese Ministry of Health, among a rural Chinese population.
Setting: Four villages in Liuyang county of Hunan province, China.
Participants: This was a cross-sectional study. A multistage cluster-sampling method was adopted, leading to a final sampling frame of 2377 residents aged 18–60 years from four villages of Liuyang county. Included in the study were residents aged 18–60 years living in their village for at least half a year; excluded were those not living in …
The Statistics Of Sensitivity Analyses, Alexander R. Luedtke, Ivan Diaz, Mark J. Van Der Laan
The Statistics Of Sensitivity Analyses, Alexander R. Luedtke, Ivan Diaz, Mark J. Van Der Laan
U.C. Berkeley Division of Biostatistics Working Paper Series
Suppose one wishes to estimate a causal parameter given a sample of observations. This requires making unidentifiable assumptions about an underlying causal mechanism. Sensitivity analyses help investigators understand what impact violations of these assumptions could have on the causal conclusions drawn from a study, though themselves rely on untestable (but hopefully more interpretable) assumptions. Díaz and van der Laan (2013) advocate the use of a sequence (or continuum) of interpretable untestable assumptions of increasing plausibility for the sensitivity analysis so that experts can have informed opinions about which are true. In this work, we argue that using appropriate statistical procedures …

The severe inflammation observed during sepsis is thought to cause diaphragm dysfunction, which is associated with poor patient prognosis. Cerium oxide (CeO2) nanoparticles have been posited to exhibit anti-inflammatory and antioxidative activities suggesting that these particles may be of potential use for the treatment of inflammatory disorders. To investigate this possibility, Sprague Dawley rats were randomly assigned to the following groups: sham control, CeO2 nanoparticle treatment only (0.5 mg/kg iv), sepsis, and sepsis+CeO2 nanoparticles. Sepsis was induced by the introduction of cecal material (600 mg/kg) directly into the peritoneal cavity. Nanoparticle treatment decreased sepsis-associated impairments in …

Support For The Inclusion Of Personal Value Preferences In Decision Support Systems, Donald L. Ariail, Janine Elyse Aronson, Richard Aukerman, Amine Khayati
Faculty Articles
We consider the important issue of including personal value preferences in decision support systems (DSS). Various personal differences have been shown to affect the acceptance, use, and effectiveness of DSS. Decision-making models offer a theoretical basis for the inclusion of various personal differences (including personal value preferences) in decision-making. Research in the field of psychology has long recognized the importance of values in both motivation and choice behavior. Other research has also found personal values to be relevant in decision-making. We posit that since personal values are important in the decision-making process, they should also be important in the support …

Colonization Of Lutzomyia Verrucarum And Lutzomyia Longipalpis Sand Flies (Diptera: Psychodidae) By Bartonella Bacilliformis, The Etiologic Agent Of Carrion's Disease, James M. Battisti, Phillip G. Lawyer, Michael F. Minnick
Biological Sciences Faculty Publications
Bartonella bacilliformis is a pathogenic bacterium transmitted to humans presumably by bites of phlebotomine sand flies, infection with which results in a bi-phasic syndrome termed Carrion's disease. After constructing a low-passage GFP-labeled strain of B. bacilliformis, we artificially infected Lutzomyia verrucarum and L. longipalpis populations, and subsequently monitored colonization of sand flies by fluorescence microscopy. Initially, colonization of the two fly species was indistinguishable, with bacteria exhibiting a high degree of motility, yet still confined to the abdominal midgut. After 48h, B. bacilliformis transitioned from bacillus-shape to a non-motile, small coccoid form and appeared to be digested along with …

Medicare's Post-Acute Care Payment: An Updated Review Of The Issues And Policy Proposals, Sally Coberly
National Health Policy Forum
Medicare spending on post-acute care provided by home health agencies, skilled nursing facilities, inpatient rehabilitation facilities, and long-term care hospitals accounted for about 10 percent of total program outlays in 2013. The Medicare Payment Advisory Commission and others have noted several long-standing problems with the payment systems for post-acute care and have suggested refinements to Medicare's post-acute care payment systems that are intended to encourage the delivery of appropriate care in the right setting for a patient's condition. The Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act of 2010 contained several provisions that affect the Medicare program's post-acute care payment systems, as …

Diagnostic Options And Challenges For Dengue And Chikungunya Viruses., Stacey K. Mardekian, Amity L. Roberts, Phd, D(Abmm)
Department of Medical Genetics Faculty Papers
Dengue virus (DENV) and Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) are arboviruses that share the same Aedes mosquito vectors and thus overlap in their endemic areas. These two viruses also cause similar clinical presentations, especially in the initial stages of infection, with neither virus possessing any specific distinguishing clinical features. Because the outcomes and management strategies for these two viruses are vastly different, early and accurate diagnosis is imperative. Diagnosis is also important for surveillance, outbreak control, and research related to vaccine and drug development. Available diagnostic tests are aimed at detection of the virus, its antigenic components, or the host immune antibody …

Testing The Concurrent Validity Of A Naturalistic Upper Extremity Reaching Task, Sydney Y. Schaefer, C. R. Hennge
Testing The Concurrent Validity Of A Naturalistic Upper Extremity Reaching Task, Sydney Y. Schaefer, C. R. Hennge
Kinesiology and Health Science Faculty Publications
Point-to-point reaching has been widely used to study upper extremity motor control. We have been developing a naturalistic reaching task that adds tool manipulation and object transport to this established paradigm. The purpose of this study was to determine the concurrent validity of a naturalistic reaching task in a sample of healthy adults. This task was compared to the criterion measure of standard point-to-point reaching. Twenty-eight adults performed unconstrained out-and-back movements in three different directions relative to constant start location along midline using their nondominant arm. In the naturalistic task, participants manipulated a tool to transport objects sequentially between physical targets …
