Improved Hcahp Scores And A Deu Culture Of Excellence, Susan A. Seibert, Angela Stroud, Lillybeth Cassel, Cara Huebner
General Submissions: Academic Settings and Education-based Materials
Two city hospitals launched Dedicated Education Units (DEUs) in collaboration with a Midwest state university. The culture of excellence created by the academic practice partnership produced an improvement in patient satisfaction scores at both hospitals. Hospital Consumer Assessment of Healthcare Providers and Systems (HCAHPS) survey scores improved dramatically within one month of DEU launch. This manuscript presents the pre- and post- DEU HCAHPS scores and relates surprising trending with student presence on the units.

Mariage Et Union De Personnes De Même Sexe Aux États-Unis : Une Affaire Compliquée Par Le Fédéralisme, Olivier Moréteau
Journal of Civil Law Studies
In the United States of America, because of federalism, the power to legislate on marriage and to decide who can marry and with whom, belongs to the legislature of the individual states. However, state legislative power may be curbed by state constitution (under the control of state courts and possible review by the state supreme court) and the United States Constitution (under the control of federal courts and possible review by the United States Supreme Court). The question whether homosexual couples have access to marriage was bound to become a constitutional issue. More and more states opened marriage to same-sex …

Les Unions Entre Gens De Même Sexe Ou De Sexe Différent En Droit Chinois : Perspective Historique, Yuan Fang
Les Unions Entre Gens De Même Sexe Ou De Sexe Différent En Droit Chinois : Perspective Historique, Yuan Fang
Journal of Civil Law Studies
While putting emphasis on the legalization of unions between same-sex individuals, the present paper has to address heterosexual unions as they are the norm in China. The evolution of matrimonial law is explored following a chronological order, without omitting the longstanding existence of cohabitation in Chinese history, the evolution of the social status of women, as well as the legal issues related to the idea of marriage in its current definition. The situation of same-sex couples is then studied, with a focus on its social recognition throughout history, as well as on the present situation, and on the legal expectations …

Who Are You Calling Irrational?, Aneil Kovvali
Who Are You Calling Irrational?, Aneil Kovvali
NULR Online
In the review, Kovvali discusses and critiques certain philosophical underpinnings of "nudges." Nudges are small interventions that change the context in which decisions are made, thus encouraging individuals to make specific choices. Using an analogy to voting paradoxes, Kovvali shows that nudges exploit a type of irrationality that results when citizens attempt to reconcile inconsistent objectives, and concludes that while insights about irrationality are useful when government officials ask how to design an intervention, they often do not provide a convincing justification for why an intervention is needed.

Stress Granules Modulate Syk To Cause Microglial Cell Dysfunction In Alzheimer's Disease, Soumira Ghosh, Robert Geahlen
Borch Department of Medicinal Chemistry and Molecular Pharmacology Faculty Publications
Microglial cells in the brains of Alzheimer's patients are known to be recruited to amyloid-beta (Aβ) plaques where they exhibit an activated phenotype, but are defective for plaque removal by phagocytosis. In this study, we show that microglia stressed by exposure to sodium arsenite or Aβ(1–42) peptides or fibrils form ex- tensive stress granules (SGs) to which the tyrosine kinase, SYK, is recruited. SYK enhances the formation of SGs, is active within the resulting SGs and stimulates the production of reactive oxygen and nitrogen species that are toxic to neuronal cells. This sequestration of SYK inhibits the ability of microglial …

Conducting Qualitative Research On Parental Incarceration: Personal Reflections On Challenges And Contributions, Beth A. Easterling, Elizabeth I. Johnson
Conducting Qualitative Research On Parental Incarceration: Personal Reflections On Challenges And Contributions, Beth A. Easterling, Elizabeth I. Johnson
The Qualitative Report
Methodological challenges of conducting research with protected populations using qualitative methods are abundant. Inmates and children are two vulnerable populations, requiring rigorous processes and permissions to gain access to individuals in these populations. Qualitative research requires intimate interactions and discussions of sensitive topics, posing challenges related to extracting information and creating emotional responses from researcher and participant. Drawing on interviews with incarcerated mothers and children with incarcerated parents, we discuss challenges and benefits of qualitative methodology for research on parental incarceration and offer suggestions for overcoming barriers to access, data collection, and publication.
Situating Vulnerability In Research: Implications For Researcher Transformation And Methodological Innovation, Joyce A. Arditti
Situating Vulnerability In Research: Implications For Researcher Transformation And Methodological Innovation, Joyce A. Arditti
The Qualitative Report
In this paper, I broaden definitions pertaining to vulnerable participants and elaborate on issues in conducting research with justice-involved individuals and their families. I explore how special human subjects protections may inadvertently silence participants and further marginalize them, along with the social inequality that characterizes “at risk” research populations. Finally, I discuss how vulnerability can invite researcher transformation and methodological innovation and highlight the value of researcher reflexivity, community based participatory research and mixed methods approaches.
