An In Vitro Assessment Of Liposomal Topotecan Simulating Metronomic Chemotherapy In Combination With Radiation In Tumor-Endothelial Spheroids, Amar Jyoti, Kyle Daniel Fugit, Pallavi Sethi, Ronald C. Mcgarry, Bradley D. Anderson, Meenakshi Upreti

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Low dose metronomic chemotherapy (LDMC) refers to prolonged administration of low dose chemotherapy designed to minimize toxicity and target the tumor endothelium, causing tumor growth inhibition. Topotecan (TPT) when administered at its maximum tolerated dose (MTD) is often associated with systemic hematological toxicities. Liposomal encapsulation of TPT enhances efficacy by shielding it from systemic clearance, allowing greater uptake and extended tissue exposure in tumors. Extended release of TPT from liposomal formulations also has the potential to mimic metronomic therapies with fewer treatments. Here we investigate potential toxicities of equivalent doses of free and actively loaded liposomal TPT (LTPT) and compare …

Craft As A Memorializing Rhetoric, Maria Novotny Oct 2015

Craft As A Memorializing Rhetoric, Maria Novotny

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

This video essay functions as a reflective piece pondering the intersections between craft, family, and the act of memorializing. Specifically, this essay attempts to push beyond traditional assumptions of craft as a discourse related to home projects or food. Instead, suggesting that the craft is a practice that memorializes bodies that have passed away and/or pain and sorrow carried on our own bodies. To make these claims, the author narrates two personal stories of craft as a memorializing rhetoric. The first narrative recounts how she came to realize craft as an essential practice embedded in the passing away of relatives. …

Sex Offender Residency Restrictions: Government Regulation Of Public Health, Safety, And Morality, John Kip Cornwell Oct 2015

Sex Offender Residency Restrictions: Government Regulation Of Public Health, Safety, And Morality, John Kip Cornwell

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

Sex offender residency restrictions have proliferated throughout the United States over the past decade. A number of commentators have likened these laws to medieval banishment, when political outcasts and undesirables are exiled to remote areas where they cannot threaten civilized society. This Article argues first that likening modern residency restrictions to “banishment” largely misconstrues this practice as it has been practiced historically. Instead, these statutory initiatives are better understood as an assertion of governments’ police power to protect public health, safety, and morality. Seen through this lens, this Article evaluates the laws’ constitutional sufficiency with attention to their allegedly punitive …

Analysis Of Efl Academic Writing In A Saudi University, Philline Mary Deraney Oct 2015

Analysis Of Efl Academic Writing In A Saudi University, Philline Mary Deraney

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

This capstone analyzes 25 texts written by female university students in Saudi Arabia using the paradigm of Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL) and genre-based writing focusing on the textual metafunction. The research methodology used was a description of the patterns that emerged in the students’ writing related to features of coherence and cohesion with basic frequency tables to support the qualitative data. The findings illustrate that while the texts showed some clear elements of coherence and cohesion and a partial understanding of the genre used in instruction, similar to international and regional studies, features of academic writing related to the textual …

Trinity, Gwenael Layec, Ryan S. Garten, Song-Young Park, Matthew J. Rossman, Steen Larsen, Flemming Dela, Russell S. Richardson

Health and Kinesiology Faculty Publications

This study sought to determine if qualitative alterations in skeletal muscle mitochondrial respiration, associated with decreased mitochondrial efficiency, contribute to exercise intolerance in patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Using permeabilized muscle fibers from the vastus lateralis of 13 patients with COPD and 12 healthy controls, complex I (CI) and complex II (CII)-driven State 3 mitochondrial respiration were measured separately (State 3:CI and State 3:CII) and in combination (State 3:CI+CII). State 2 respiration was also measured. Exercise tolerance was assessed by knee extensor exercise (KE) time to fatigue. Per milligram of muscle, State 3:CI+CII and State 3:CI were reduced …

Key Navigation Safety Factors In Taiwanese Harbors And Surrounding Waters, Chien-Chang Chou, Yuh-Ling Su, Ren-Fu Li, Chaur-Luh Tsai, Ji-Feng Ding

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

This study investigated navigation safety in Taiwanese harbors and surrounding waters. The key factors that influence navigation safety were summarized by reviewing relevant literature and by interviewing experts. A questionnaire survey was used to assess the degree of importance of these different factors, including human, vessel, harbor traffic, and climatic and environmental factors. A factor analysis was used to design a systematic hierarchical structure for clustering these factors. This study suggests that duty officers can prevent maritime incidents from occurring by taking precautions against the various key factors identified here.

Exploring Police Legitimacy Perceptions Among Arab And Chaldean Business Owners In Detroit, Vaughn J. Crichlow, Edmund F. Mcgarrell

Qualitative Criminology (QC)

"Most agree that police officers cannot do their jobs effectively without the support of community members. However, little is known about the perceptions of small business owners who could potentially make a meaningful contribution to safety and security in such communities. There is also a paucity of research on immigrant-owned businesses in disorderly urban communities. To address the gap, this study explores the attitudes of small business owners toward the police in Detroit, Michigan, a city known for high levels of violent crime and presents an analysis of the qualitative data collected from in-depth interviews with small business owners (n …

Numerical Crashworthiness Analysis Of An Offshore Wind Turbine Jacket Impacted By A Ship, Hervé Le Sourne, Andres Barrera, Jose Babu Maliakel Oct 2015

Numerical Crashworthiness Analysis Of An Offshore Wind Turbine Jacket Impacted By A Ship, Hervé Le Sourne, Andres Barrera, Jose Babu Maliakel

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

The objective of the present work is to understand the crushing behavior of a predefined wind turbine jacket when it is impacted by a ship. To investigate the resulting deformation modes and the repartition of dissipated energy, nonlinear finite element analyses are performed to simulate both rigid and deformable ships colliding the jacket at different velocities. In a first part, a sensitivity analysis to the jacket impacted area is carried out to find the most damaging situation. Then, the influences of gravity loads, wind force, and soil stiffness are studied, considering that the striking ship is rigid. In a second …

Restricted And Repetitive Behaviors As Strengths, Not Weaknesses: Evaluating The Use Of Social Stories That Embed Restricted Interests On The Social Skills Of Children With Autism Spectrum Disorder, Maya Nasr

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

The purpose of this study was to investigate the extent to which the use of social stories that integrate a child’s particular restricted and repetitive behaviors results in differential social outcomes compared to the use of social stories that do not integrate restricted and repetitive behaviors. A non-concurrent multiple baseline experimental design across participants was used to examine the effects of two Social Story interventions on the frequency of appropriate social behaviors made by participants in a school setting. Field notes were also completed during each day of data collection in order to document the social context, events, activities, moods …

The Trial Of Calcium And Vitamin D For The Prevention Of Colorectal Adenomas, John A. Baron, Elizabeth L. Barry, Leila A. Mott, Judy R. Rees Oct 2015

The Trial Of Calcium And Vitamin D For The Prevention Of Colorectal Adenomas, John A. Baron, Elizabeth L. Barry, Leila A. Mott, Judy R. Rees

Dartmouth Scholarship

BACKGROUND Epidemiologic and preclinical data suggest that higher intake and serum levels of vitamin D and higher intake of calcium reduce the risk of colorectal neoplasia. To further study the chemopreventive potential of these nutrients, we conducted a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of supplementation with vitamin D, calcium, or both for the prevention of colorectal adenomas. METHODS We recruited patients with recently diagnosed adenomas and no known colorectal polyps remaining after complete colonoscopy. We randomly assigned 2259 participants to receive daily vitamin D3 (1000 IU), calcium as carbonate (1200 mg), both, or neither in a partial 2Å~2 factorial design. Women …

On Rage, Shame, "Realness," And Accountability To Survivors, Kathleen Ann Livingston Oct 2015

On Rage, Shame, "Realness," And Accountability To Survivors, Kathleen Ann Livingston

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

This essay examines the rhetorical moves made on all sides of the recent conversation on trigger warnings. Calling for accountability to survivors, it positions trigger warnings as one practice of consent. Though in practice trigger warnings bring up issues of censorship, they can be understood as a way for survivors to take their power back by telling a bit of their trauma narrative and requesting accommodations and accountability. Unpacking the histories and the language of trigger warnings reveals how our culture thinks of survivors and how far anti-violence movements have to go.

Buy-It-Yourself: How Diy Got Consumerized, Elizabeth Chamberlain

Harlot: A Revealing Look at the Arts of Persuasion

Looking at do-it-yourself (DIY) fashion blogs as a test case, 'Buy-It-Yourself' considers some of the consumerizing pressures that can turn an anti-consumption movement into another tool of the corporate machine. I examine the punk roots of the DIY movement, the recent flurry of maker activity, and a sampling of DIY fashion blogs from their 2009 heyday through the present. Ultimately, I suggest that online activists consider DIY fashion blogs as a warning tale: as a counterculture movement begins to pick up steam, it can morph into something that betrays its original goals.

Effects Of Cellulase Hydrolysis And Carbonates On The Probiotic Fermentation Of Noni (Morinda Citrifolia), Hui-Hung Lee, Li-Jung Yin, Shann-Tzong Jiang

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

In typical fermentation of noni (Morina citrifolia), nutrients loss, along with unfavorable taste and odor frequently occurred due to the time-consuming fermentation. To improve the quality of fermented noni, cellulase hydrolysis and probiotic fermentation were employed. Four hours of hydrolysis with 100 U/mL of cellulase at 50°C significantly increased the reducing sugar, total phenolic content, reducing power, and trolox equivalent antioxidant capacity. No probiotics tested in this study could grow on the noni slurry and its hydrolysate, except for Pediococcus pentosaceus (BCRC 14053), which was able to grow on noni with 0.6% calcium carbonate. The probiotic count increased to 8.55 …
