Higher education is coming under increasing scrutiny, both publically and within academia, with respect to its ability to appropriately prepare students for the careers that will make them competitive in the 21st-century workplace. At the same time, there is a growing awareness that many global issues will require creative and critical thinking deeply rooted in the technical STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics) disciplines. However, the existing and ingrained structures of higher education, particularly in the STEM fields, are not set up to provide students with extensive skill development in communication, teamwork, and divergent thinking, which is needed …

There's nothing like dating to turn us into a miserable puddle of falsehood. When we're with the person we like, we fight to play the game and find the right balance of not showing too much interest (so she'll know that you like her) and showing enough (so she doesn't think you don't). It's an art. But when we're only texting, we can behave however we'd like as long as we choose our words carefully; we don't even try to hide our emotions, and the perfect strangers surrounding us see more of our unabashed smile than the object of our …

Applying The Rasch Model To Construct The Shipping Industry Employability Indicators, Tzeu-Chen Han, Ti-Huei Li
Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan
In recent years, with the increase of the unemployment rate, employability has become a popular issue for different industries, as it can enhance the employment rate for industries and project industrial growth. This study examines shipping-related industries using the Rasch model, to construct scientific evaluation items in relation to the professional techniques and skills of the shipping-related industries. It further validates whether the generalized employability in the shipping-related industries is needed. Research findings are reorganized as employability indicators of the shipping-related industries. The findings are expected to serve as references for the shipping industry to evaluate new employees and for …

Virtually all animals have endogenous clock mechanisms that “entrain” to the light-dark (LD) cycle and synchronize psychophysiological functions to optimal times for exploring resources and avoiding dangers in the environment. Such circadian rhythms are vital to human mental health, but it is unknown whether circadian rhythms “entrained” to the LD cycle can be overridden by entrainment to daily recurring threats. We show that unsignaled nocturnal footshock caused rats living in an “ethological” apparatus to switch their natural foraging behavior from the dark to the light phase and that this switch was maintained as a free-running circadian rhythm upon removal of …

Numerous studies have compared dentures fabricated using neutral zone and conventional techniques. However, studies comparing swallowing and phonetic techniques for location and shape assessment of the neutral zone using the same material could not be found in the literature. The purpose of this study was to compare the outline form of the phonetic and swallowing neutral zone impression techniques for the same subject. Five edentulous patients with advanced mandibular ridge resorption were included in this study. For each subject, 2 trays were prepared in autopolymerizing acrylic resin. Impressions were made using the same autopolymerizing resin. Nonetheless, one method used phonetics to …

Bis(Spirolactam) 1,3-Double-Armed Calix[4]Arene Compounds And Their Application As Extractants For The Determination Of Heavy Metal Ions, Fintan Kelleher, Mary Deasy, James Ward, Li Li, Fiona Regan
Articles
A number of double-armed calix[4]arene compounds, with proline-derived spirolactam ligating groups on the lower rim, have been synthesised and investigated as extractants of toxic heavy metal ions from aqueous solution. Pedersen’s extraction technique was employed to determine the capability of these new 1,3-distal derived calix[4]arene spiroalactams to extract selected heavy metal ions (e.g. Pb2+, Cd2+, Zn2+, Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+) from an aqueous phase into an organic phase. The percentage extraction was calculated using UV-vis spectroscopy. All of the compounds synthesised demonstrated good selectivity for the heavy metals selected …

Cosmetic products, such as facial scrubs, have been identified as potentially important primary sources of microplastics to the marine environment. This study characterises, quantifies and then investigates the sorptive properties of plastic microbeads that are used as exfoliants in cosmetics. Polyethylene microbeads were extracted from several products, and shown to have a wide size range (mean diameters between 164 and 327μm). We estimated that between 4594 and 94,500 microbeads could be released in a single use. To examine the potential for microbeads to accumulate and transport chemicals they were exposed to a binary mixture of 3H-phenanthrene and 14C-DDT …

Sensorineural hearing loss is a common and currently irreversible disorder, because mammalian hair cells (HCs) do not regenerate and current stem cell and gene delivery protocols result only in immature HC-like cells. Importantly, although the transcriptional regulators of embryonic HC development have been described, little is known about the postnatal regulators of maturating HCs. Here we apply a cell type-specific functional genomic analysis to the transcriptomes of auditory and vestibular sensory epithelia from early postnatal mice. We identify RFX transcription factors as essential and evolutionarily conserved regulators of the HC-specific transcriptomes, and detect Rfx1,2,3,5 and 7 in the developing HCs. …

In a recent report Title et al. (1) fostered miRNA-375 and miR-200c knock-out pups to wild-type dams and arrived at the conclusion that milk microRNAs are bioavailable in trace amounts at best and that postprandial concentrations of microRNAs are too low to elicit biological effects. Their take home message is flawed. First, the majority of microRNAs in bovine milk are encapsulated in exosomes, thereby conferring protection against degradation and a mechanism for intestinal transport (2). Second, numerous dietary microRNAs have been cataloged among human samples (3). Third, the mere absence of a postprandial increase does not equate with zero absorption. …

Revival Or Revolution: U.S. Trust's Role In The Contracts Clause Circuit Split, Michael Cataldo
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Note argues that U.S. Trust's Contracts Clause test created ambiguities that have spawned varying and conflicting approaches in the circuits. This Note also argues that U.S. Trust's failure to advance the Framers' original intent and departure from precedent has created the doctrinal disagreement that feeds the circuit split. Part I presents the history of the Contracts Clause from the Constitutional Convention up to the decision in U.S. Trust. Part II emphasizes the negative consequences of U.S. Trust's novel approach by detailing the varying approaches the circuits have taken in applying the ambiguous dual standards set out in …

Reexamining School Liability And The Viability Of A Special Relationship Claim In The Aftermath Of Deshaney V. Winnebago County Department Of Social Services, Anita Binayifaal
St. John's Law Review
(Excerpt)
This Note focuses on whether a school deprives a student of a constitutional due process right to bodily integrity and security and thus violates section 1983-when the school fails to adequately protect the student from harm. At the center of this discussion is the special relationship exception that DeShaney carved out. Part I briefly discusses the Fourteenth Amendment, due process, and section 1983 claims. It then examines the facts and holding of DeShaney, which have shaped the boundaries of school system liability.3 1 Part II discusses the majority approach taken by circuit courts in determining the proper duty …
