Differential Modification Of Cortical And Thalamic Projections To Cat Primary Auditory Cortex Following Early- And Late-Onset Deafness., Nicole Chabot, Blake E Butler, Stephen G Lomber Oct 2015

Differential Modification Of Cortical And Thalamic Projections To Cat Primary Auditory Cortex Following Early- And Late-Onset Deafness., Nicole Chabot, Blake E Butler, Stephen G Lomber

Brain and Mind Institute Researchers' Publications

Following sensory deprivation, primary somatosensory and visual cortices undergo crossmodal plasticity, which subserves the remaining modalities. However, controversy remains regarding the neuroplastic potential of primary auditory cortex (A1). To examine this, we identified cortical and thalamic projections to A1 in hearing cats and those with early- and late-onset deafness. Following early deafness, inputs from second auditory cortex (A2) are amplified, whereas the number originating in the dorsal zone (DZ) decreases. In addition, inputs from the dorsal medial geniculate nucleus (dMGN) increase, whereas those from the ventral division (vMGN) are reduced. In late-deaf cats, projections from the anterior auditory field (AAF) …

Engagement With Ehealth Self-Monitoring In A Primary Care-Based Weight Management Intervention, Kathleen Y. Wolin, Dori M. Steinberg, Ilana B. Lane, Sandy Askew, Mary L. Greaney, Graham A. Colditz, Gary G. Bennett

Kinesiology Faculty Publications

Background:

While eHealth approaches hold promise for improving the reach and cost-effectiveness of behavior change interventions, they have been challenged by declining participant engagement over time, particularly for self-monitoring behaviors. These are significant concerns in the context of chronic disease prevention and management where durable effects are important for driving meaningful changes.

Purpose:

“Be Fit, Be Well” was an eHealth weight loss intervention that allowed participants to self-select a self-monitoring modality (web or interactive voice response (IVR)). Participants could change their modality. As such, this study provides a unique opportunity to examine the effects of intervention modality choice and changing …

Analysis Of Grounding Accidents Caused By Human Error, Özkan Uğurlu, Umut Yıldırım, Ersan Başar

Journal of Marine Science and Technology–Taiwan

Despite modern bridge equipment, new technologies, and improved safety measures, maritime accidents still occur, and an analysis of their causes is essential in preventing future accidents. Ship groundings are one of the more frequent types of accidents encountered, and this study examines the maritime accident reports issued for grounded ships between 1993 and 2011. These were sourced using the International Maritime Organization's Global Integrated Shipping Information System and the reports published by the countries and relevant institutions that investigated the accidents. The grounding accidents are analysed using the Analytic Hierarchy Process, and the objective of this study is to act …

Uncapping Compensation In The Gore Punitive Damage Analysis, Shaakirrah R. Sanders Oct 2015

Uncapping Compensation In The Gore Punitive Damage Analysis, Shaakirrah R. Sanders

William & Mary Bill of Rights Journal

BMW of North America, Inc. v. Gore rests, in part, on the “understandable relationship” between a civil jury’s award of compensatory and punitive damages. Gore designates Due Process a protectant against excessive civil jury awards, in effect outmaneuvering the civil jury trial right. Gore identifies three guideposts to determine whether punitive damages are excessive: (1) the degree of reprehensibility of a defendant’s conduct; (2) the disparity between compensatory and punitive damages; and (3) the difference between punitive damages and civil penalties authorized or imposed in comparable cases.

This Article focuses on the second of Gore’s three guideposts, which examines the …

The Aftermath Of Louis Vuitton: Why Bringing A Trademark Infringement Case In The Itc Is A Viable Option, Jake Webb Oct 2015

The Aftermath Of Louis Vuitton: Why Bringing A Trademark Infringement Case In The Itc Is A Viable Option, Jake Webb

Northwestern Journal of Technology and Intellectual Property

In 2012, the International Trade Commission (“ITC”) issued a general exclusion order in favor of Louis Vuitton, prohibiting the importation of any good infringing upon Louis Vuitton’s famous trademarks. This exclusion order applies to any entity importing infringing goods, regardless of their status as a party in the ITC investigation. This type of equitable relief is extremely powerful, and would be preferable over monetary relief to trademark owners in many scenarios. This was one of the first large-scale trademark investigations heard by the ITC, and should lead to a drastic increase in the number of trademark owners who consider the …

Molecular Phylogenetics Reveals Convergent Evolution In Lower Congo River Spiny Eels, S. Elizabeth Alter, Bianca Brown, Melanie L. J. Stiassny Oct 2015

Molecular Phylogenetics Reveals Convergent Evolution In Lower Congo River Spiny Eels, S. Elizabeth Alter, Bianca Brown, Melanie L. J. Stiassny

Publications and Research

Background The lower Congo River (LCR) is a region of exceptional species diversity and endemism in the Congo basin, including numerous species of spiny eels (genus Mastacembelus). Four of these exhibit distinctive phenotypes characterized by greatly reduced optic globes deeply embedded into the head (cryptophthalmia) and reduced (or absent) melanin pigmentation, among other characteristics. A strikingly similar cryptophthalmic phenotype is also found in members of a number of unrelated fish families, strongly suggesting the possibility of convergent evolution. However, little is known about the evolutionary processes that shaped diversification in LCR Mastacembelus, their biogeographic origins, or when colonization of the …

Ethanol Enhances Arsenic-Induced Cyclooxygenase-2 Expression Via Both Nfat And Nf-Κb Signalings In Colorectal Cancer Cells, Lei Wang, John Andrew Hitron, James T.F. Wise, Young Ok Son, Ram Vinod Roy, Donghern Kim, Jin Dai, Poyil Pratheeshkumar, Zhuo Zhang, Mei Xu, Jia Luo, Xianglin Shi

Faculty Publications

Arsenic is a known carcinogen to humans, and chronic exposure to environmental arsenic is a worldwide health concern. As a dietary factor, ethanol carries a well-established risk for malignancies, but the effects of co-exposure to arsenic and ethanol on tumor development are not well understood. In the present study, we hypothesized that ethanol would enhance the function of an environmental carcinogen such as arsenic through increase in COX-2 expression. Our in vitro results show that ethanol enhanced arsenic-induced COX-2 expression. We also show that the increased COX-2 expression associates with intracellular ROS generation, up-regulated AKT signaling, with activation of both …

Psychology: Faculty Publications

Fatigue is a disabling symptom in patients with multiple sclerosis and Parkinson’s Disease, and is also common in patients with traumatic brain injury, cancer, and inflammatory disor- ders. Little is known about the neurobiology of fatigue, in part due to the lack of an approach to induce fatigue in laboratory animals. Fatigue is a common response to systemic challenge by pathogens, a response in part mediated through action of the pro-inflammatory cytokine interleukin-1 beta (IL-1β). We investigated the behavioral responses of mice to IL-1β. Female C57Bl/6J mice of 3 ages were administered IL-1β at various doses i.p. Interleukin-1β reduced locomotor …
