Loss Of Glycosaminoglycan Receptor Binding After Mosquito Cell Passage Reduces Chikungunya Virus Infectivity, Amber M. Paul, Dhiraj Acharya, John F. Anderson, Faqing Huang, Fengwei Bai

Chikungunya virus (CHIKV) is a mosquito-transmitted alphavirus that can cause fever and chronic arthritis in humans. CHIKV that is generated in mosquito or mammalian cells differs in glycosylation patterns of viral proteins, which may affect its replication and virulence. Herein, we compare replication, pathogenicity, and receptor binding of CHIKV generated in Vero cells (mammal) or C6/36 cells (mosquito) through a single passage. We demonstrate that mosquito cell derived CHIKV (CHIKVmos) has slower replication than mammalian cell derived CHIKV (CHIKVvero), when tested in both human and murine cell lines. Consistent with this, CHIKVmos infection in both cell lines produce less cytopathic …

The Role Of Quality Health Services And Discussion About Birth Spacing In Postpartum Contraceptive Use In Sindh, Pakistan: A Multilevel Analysis, Hannah Tappis, Anis Kazi, Waqas Hameed, Zaib Dahar, Anayat Ali, Sohail Agha
Community Health Sciences
Introduction: Rapid population growth, stagnant contraceptive prevalence, and high unmet need for family planning present significant challenges for meeting Pakistan's national and international development goals. Although health behaviors are shaped by multiple social and environmental factors, research on contraceptive uptake in Pakistan has focused on individual and household determinants, and little attention has been given to community characteristics that may affect access to services and reproductive behavior.
Methods: Individual and community determinants of contraceptive use were identified using multivariable multilevel logistic regression to analyze data from a 2014 cross-sectional survey of 6,200 mothers in 503 communities in Sindh, Pakistan.

A Comparison Of Static Stretching Versus Combined Static And Ballistic Stretching In Active Knee Range Of Motion, Nathan R. Blackhurst, James C. Peterson, Valerie W. Herzog, Ericka P. Zimmerman
A Comparison Of Static Stretching Versus Combined Static And Ballistic Stretching In Active Knee Range Of Motion, Nathan R. Blackhurst, James C. Peterson, Valerie W. Herzog, Ericka P. Zimmerman
Internet Journal of Allied Health Sciences and Practice
Background: There is continued controversy related to flexibility gains from different stretching protocols and within single protocols. Stretching methods include static, ballistic, dynamic, and proprioceptive neuromuscular facilitation (PNF). A combination of stretching methods may be an improved way to increase active knee range of motion (ROM). This study evaluated a single program formulated with static and ballistic components. Objective: To compare active knee ROM following stretching programs which either included combined static and ballistic stretching (CSBS) or static stretching (SS) alone. It was hypothesized that CSBS would show a greater increase in active knee ROM than SS. Setting …

Open Educational Resources
This document describes a strategy for increasing student leadership and creativity skills through the creation of cartoons. Creating cartoons engages students in divergent thinking and cognitive processes, such as perception, recall, and mental processing. When students create cartoons focused on a particular topic, they are making connections to their already developed schema by representing the idea or concept in a unique way. The cartoons presented in this report were created by an education professor, graduate students, preservice teachers, and third grade students. Many of the cartoons focus on the seven leadership skills articulated in Steven Covey’s “Leader in Me” program. …

Uplc Simultaneous Determination Of Empagliflozin, Linagliptin And Metformin, Bassam M. Ayoub
Pharmacy
© The Royal Society of Chemistry. The first UPLC method for simultaneous determination of empagliflozin, linagliptin and metformin hydrochloride in the different combinations of their pharmaceutical dosage forms was developed. Chromatographic separation was achieved on a Symmetry® Acclaim™ RSLC 120 C18 column (100 mm × 2.1 mm, 2.2 μm) applying isocratic elution based on potassium dihydrogen phosphate buffer pH (4)-methanol (50 : 50, v/v) as the mobile phase. The linearity, accuracy and precision were found to be acceptable over the concentration ranges of 1-32 μg mL-1, 0.5-16 μg mL-1 and 1-100 μg mL-1 for empagliflozin, linagliptin and metformin hydrochloride, respectively. …

A Generation At Risk: The Ties Between Zero Tolerance Policies And The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Mikki L. Smith
A Generation At Risk: The Ties Between Zero Tolerance Policies And The School-To-Prison Pipeline, Mikki L. Smith
McNair Scholars Research Journal
This research will discuss the use of “zero tolerance policies” in public schools across America. These policies have been shown to adversely affect students from urban backgrounds, particularly minority males and those with disabilities. Equally, the use of out-of-school suspension is statistically proven to have a negative impact on high school completion, often resulting in criminal activity and future incarceration for these students, a phenomenon described as the “school-to-prison pipeline.” This research will discuss the history of zero tolerance policies, reveal bias in their use, and review alternative solutions that have proven successful.
College Students Experiencing Homelessness: The Consequence Of Failed Macro Policies, Brialle D. Ringer
College Students Experiencing Homelessness: The Consequence Of Failed Macro Policies, Brialle D. Ringer
McNair Scholars Research Journal
Homelessness among college students is a growing trend, yet the problem is difficult to document due to the stigma associated with the circumstance. Flaws in policies related to jobs and wages, affordable housing, and affordable education interact to increase the risks faced by economically vulnerable students who enter college without secure housing, or who lose it during the course of their studies. A concerted institutional response is needed to mitigate both the risks and the consequences of homelessness, and to reduce the numbers of U.S. college students whose educational attainment is compromised by housing insecurity.

Latinos are one of the prevalent immigrant populations in the United States, and the number of immigrants from the Dominican Republic grows every year. Dominican women are faced with the process of acculturation, and as a result their traditional values and beliefs can be both challenged and changed. The purpose of this research is to compare Dominican women who reside in the United States (U.S.) to Dominican women who reside in the Dominican Republic. We will examine their relationships with men, with a focus on their (1) sexual practices, (2) independence, and (3) sexual health. We anticipate finding marked differences …
