Oxidative Cross-Coupling Of Sp3- And Sp2-Hybridized C–H Bonds: Vanadium-Catalyzed Aminomethylation Of Imidazo[1,2-A]Pyridines, Pinku Kaswan, Ashley Porter, Kasiviswanadharaju Pericherla, Marissa Simone, Sean Peters, Anil Kumar, Brenton Deboef

Chemistry Faculty Publications

The vanadium-catalyzed oxidative coupling of substituted 2-arylimidiazo[1,2-a]pyridines to N-methylmorpholine oxide, which acts as both a coupling partner and an oxidant, has been achieved. This reaction was applied to various substituted imidiazo[1,2-a]pyridine and indole substrates, resulting in yields as high as 90%. Mechanistic investigations indicate that the reaction may proceed via a Mannich-type process. This work demonstrates how oxidative aminomethylation can be used as a useful method to introduce tertiary amines into heterocycles, thus providing an alternative method for conventional Mannich-type reactions.

Characterizing Changes In Protein Quality Attributes To Assess Leachable Risks From Single-Use Bioprocess Containers, Nina Xiao, Colin Medley, Ian Shieh, Gregory Downing, Ankit Patel, Shelly Pizarro, Jun Liu

Single-Use Technologies: Bridging Polymer Science to Biotechnology Applications

Leachables from bioprocess containers (BPCs) are a source of process-related impurities that have the potential to alter product quality and impact patient health. The leachables often exist at low concentrations that are difficult to detect and assess their impact on quality attributes (QA) of biotherapeutics stored in the BPCs. This study examines two monoclonal antibodies in a small-scale stressed model to detect and assess the presence of relevant BPC leachables by monitoring protein QA. The results from this study demonstrate that the stress model can inform a risk assessment of leachables on protein QA during routine manufacturing and assist in …

Impact Of A Toxic Single-Use Bio-Process Container Film Leachable On Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, Heather Nunn, Matthew Hammond Oct 2015

Impact Of A Toxic Single-Use Bio-Process Container Film Leachable On Chinese Hamster Ovary Cells, Heather Nunn, Matthew Hammond

Single-Use Technologies: Bridging Polymer Science to Biotechnology Applications

A high-throughput cell-based assay (HT-CBA) was developed to investigate the impacts of the polymer films used to construct single-use bio-processing equipment such as bio-process containers (BPCs) and single-use bioreactors (SUBs) on the growth and health of Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells. Cell growth media were incubated in BPCs constructed from several different films, and the media thus treated was used to culture CHO cells in 24 deep-well plates. Multiple films negatively impacted culture growth and viability. The compound bis(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl)phosphate (bDtBPP) which leaches at low levels from these films was shown to be highly detrimental to cell growth. The toxic compound …

The Effects Of Irradiation Technologies On Some Polymers Commonly Used In Suds, Olivier Vrain Oct 2015

The Effects Of Irradiation Technologies On Some Polymers Commonly Used In Suds, Olivier Vrain

Single-Use Technologies: Bridging Polymer Science to Biotechnology Applications

Both gamma ray and electron beam irradiation are widely used as a means of medical device sterilisation. However, it is known that the radiation produced by both processes can lead to undesirable changes within biomedical polymers.

This presentation will aim to explain the collaboration between a steriliser contractor and a university to carry out some comparative study on the two key radio-sterilisation methods (gamma ray and electron beam) in order to identify the more detrimental process in terms of the mechanical, structural, chemical and thermal properties of a common biomedical grade polymer, Poly (ether-block-amide) (PEBA).

Therefore, this presentation will have …

Methodological Status And Trends In Expository Text Structure Instruction Efficacy Research, Janet J. Bohaty, Michael A. Hebert, J Ron Nelson, Jessica A. Brown

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This systematic descriptive historical review was conducted to examine the status and trends in expository text structure instruction efficacy research for first through twelfth grade students. The analysis included sixty studies, which spanned the years 1978 to 2014. Descriptive dimensions of the research included study type, research design, treatment fidelity, school level, number of participants, service delivery settings, and comprehensiveness of demographic reporting, text structure instruction, and measurement. Researchers primarily used randomized and quasi-experimental research designs. Analysis of results revealed that (a) a relatively large number of text structure efficacy research studies have been conducted, (b) complete demographic information was …

Spelling Instruction In The Primary Grades: Teachers’ Beliefs, Practices, And Concerns, Antoinette Doyle, Jing Zhang, Chris Mattatall

Reading Horizons: A Journal of Literacy and Language Arts

This study examined Canadian teachers’ beliefs, practices and concerns about spelling instruction in the primary grades. Data from surveys (n = 56) indicated that most teachers believe that spelling is important and plan for spelling instruction. For most teachers, the spelling words and activities used, and the instructional resources they chose, reflected an attempt to incorporate both holistic and traditional approaches to instruction. Teachers reported that substantial numbers of children experience difficulty with spelling. They suggested that greater emphasis be placed on defining spelling outcomes in the curriculum, as well as on teacher education and resources for teaching spelling to …

Post-Polypectomy Electrocoagulation Syndrome: A Rare Cause Of Acute Abdominal Pain., Asad Jehangir, Kyle M. Bennett, Andrew C. Rettew, Opeyemi Fadahunsi, Bilal Shaikh, Anthony A. Donato

Reading Hospital Internal Medicine Residency

While generally safe, the most feared complication of colonoscopy is perforation of the colon, occurring in nearly 1 in 1,000 procedures, and is more common when polypectomy is performed and electrocautery is used. Less commonly known is the post-polypectomy electrocoagulation syndrome, a transmural burn of the colon which mimics the signs and symptoms of perforation as well as the time course, but follows a benign course and can be treated conservatively.
