Character Strengths And Service Leadership, Daniel T. L. Shek, Lu Yu
Character Strengths And Service Leadership, Daniel T. L. Shek, Lu Yu
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
Character strengths refer to the moral aspects of personality that have multiple dimensions. As a basic requirement of a service leader, character strengths provide the most inherent power for fulfilling different tasks and pursuing continuous development. In this paper, a lecture that aims to foster character strengths in undergraduate students is introduced. The theoretical foundation of the lecture on character strengths is first presented, including the concepts and theories related to character strengths, their relevance to service leadership and methods to promote the development of character strengths. The basic content and activities designed for this particular lecture are then outlined …
Subjective Outcome Evaluation Of A University Subject On Service Leadership, Daniel T. L. Shek, Jianqiang Liang
Subjective Outcome Evaluation Of A University Subject On Service Leadership, Daniel T. L. Shek, Jianqiang Liang
Pediatrics Faculty Publications
University students (n=58) responded to a 45-item subjective outcome evaluation scale after taking a credit-bearing elective subject titled “Service Leadership” at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University in the first semester of the 2013–14 academic year. Results showed that the students generally displayed positive perceptions of the program content and the instructors, and most of them perceived the subject to be beneficial to different aspects of their development. As predicted, three subscales of the scale (Program Content, Program Implementer, and Program Benefits) were significantly correlated. Similar to the previous studies, perceived quality of the program but not quality of instructors and …
Occupancy Modeling Of Herpetofauna And Grassland Nesting Birds At Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, Kasandra A. Brown
Occupancy Modeling Of Herpetofauna And Grassland Nesting Birds At Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, Kasandra A. Brown
Master's Theses or Doctor of Nursing Practice
Only about 11% of native grasslands remain in the United States (North America Bird Conservation Initiative, 2011). Grasslands are a considerable source of biodiversity and play a crucial role in nutrient cycling (Suttie et al. 2005; Holechek et al. 2011). Stewards, such as the US Fish and Wildlife Service, are essential to grassland conservation, especially in Kansas, where less than one percent of land is under federal stewardship or public trust (Holechek et al. 2011). Quivira National Wildlife Refuge, an 8,900 hectare refuge located in Stafford County, has traditionally been managed as a stopover for migratory birds, but is now …

This is the first State of the Commonwealth Report. It is jointly sponsored by the Strome College of Business at Old Dominion University and the Virginia Chamber Foundation. While the report represents the work of many people connected in various ways to the university, it does not constitute an official viewpoint of Old Dominion or it's president, John R. Broderick. Similarly, it does not represent the views of the Virginia Chamber of Commerce or it's president and CEO, Barry DuVal.
The goal of the report is to stimulate thought and discussion that ultimately will make Virginia an even better place …
The Family Mealtime Study: Parent Socialization And Context During And Surrounding Family Mealtimes, Car Mun Kok
The Family Mealtime Study: Parent Socialization And Context During And Surrounding Family Mealtimes, Car Mun Kok
College of Education and Human Sciences: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
Past research showed that family mealtimes positively impact youth's dietary behaviors. However, the processes through which these benefits occur are unclear. Understanding the aspects of family mealtimes such as parent socialization and mealtime context can increase the understanding of how family mealtimes may benefit youths’ dietary behaviors. This mixed methods study identified occurrences around family mealtimes that might impact youths’ dietary behaviors. One hundred parent-child dyads completed surveys. A subsample of 40 families participated in family mealtime observations and 20 parents were interviewed. Quantitative findings showed that parents engaged in various food- and mealtime-related socialization behaviors like parent modeling, parent …
Construction Of An Anti-Mexican American Bias Scale And Its Validation, Leslie N. Martinez
Construction Of An Anti-Mexican American Bias Scale And Its Validation, Leslie N. Martinez
Department of Psychology: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research
The purpose of the dissertation is to develop a meaningful measure of Anti-Mexican American attitudes and to test that measure for its utility in predicting biased attributions for Mexican Americans. Attention has mainly focused on bias against Blacks, and this has produced important gaps in the understanding of race/ethnic bias that must be addressed. For the past few decades, the number of racial minorities, especially the number of Latinos/Hispanics, has been on the rise. The psychometric properties and validation of the new Anti-Mexican American Attitude Scale (AMAAS) were investigated through study 1 and study 2. The principal components analysis pulled …

Skin-Only Closure For Surgical Closure Of The Difficult Abdomen With Massive Visceral Edema :A Case Report, Wisuttiluk Satawathananont
Chulalongkorn Medical Journal
A 51-year-old woman presented with anemia and cholangitis. Abdominal computedtomography scan was done; the result revealed a periampullary mass and distal obstructionof the common bile duct. Exploratory laparotomy was performed and an unresectableperiampullary tumor that invaded the branches of the mesenteric vein was found. Accidentally, intra–abdominal bleeding from the branches of the mesenteric vein occurred during theoperation; the bleeding was stopped by suturing. The patient received a large amount offluids resuscitation and bowel edema also developed so much that the fascia could not beclosed. The skin-only closure was performed as an alternative method of abdominal wallclosure. Postoperatively, the patient did not …

Sanders-Brown Center on Aging Faculty Publications
The ABCC9 gene and its polypeptide product, SUR2, are increasingly implicated in human neurologic disease, including prevalent diseases of the aged brain. SUR2 proteins are a component of the ATP-sensitive potassium (“K ATP ”) channel, a metabolic sensor for stress and/or hypoxia that has been shown to change in aging. The K ATP channel also helps regulate the neurovascular unit. Most brain cell types express SUR2, including neurons, astrocytes, oligodendrocytes, microglia, vascular smooth muscle, pericytes, and endothelial cells. Thus it is not surprising that ABCC9 gene variants are associated with risk for human brain diseases. For example, Cantu syndrome is …

The Effect Of Teacher-Child Interactions On Child Outcomes, Jean R. Ubbelohde
Student Work
There is a strong body of research that suggests teacher-child interactions have a positive impact on child outcomes. Quality preschool programs include a focus on intentional positive interaction between teachers and children. To support positive developmental gains in young children, early childhood settings must include responsive and cognitively stimulating daily interactions between adults and children (Hamre, 2014). Children with more responsive teachers show improved outcomes across social, behavioral and cognitive domains (Hamre, Hatfield, Pianta, & Jamil, 2014). The purpose of this correlation study was to determine the effect of teacher-child interactions on child outcomes. This focus of the study was …

A Novel Approach To Identify Shared Fragments In Drugs And Natural Products, Ashkay Balasubramanya, Ishwor Thapa, Dhundy Raj Bastola, Dario Ghersi
Interdisciplinary Informatics Faculty Proceedings & Presentations
Fragment-based approaches have now become an important component of the drug discovery process. At the same time, pharmaceutical chemists are more often turning to the natural world and its extremely large and diverse collection of natural compounds to discover new leads that can potentially be turned into drugs. In this study we introduce and discuss a computational pipeline to automatically extract statistically overrepresented chemical fragments in therapeutic classes, and search for similar fragments in a large database of natural products. By systematically identifying enriched fragments in therapeutic groups, we are able to extract and focus on few fragments that are …
