Surveillance In The Service Of Safety, Rashid Jooma

Section of Neurosurgery

The World Report on Road Traffic Injury Prevention of 2004 recommended that the newly motorizing countries establish road injury surveillance to define the burden, identify highrisk groups, plan intervention and monitor their impact. Despite its stated importance in the literature, very few examples of sustained surveillance systems are reported from low income countries. This presentation shares the results of an urban RTI surveillance program that has been running for the past 8 years since 2007 in the emergency departments of five major hospitals in Karachi, Pakistan. We describe the process of establishing the road injury surveillance system incorporating a multi-institution …

Conclusions

  • We believe our phosphorus levels are at a point that we will no longer include it in our fertilization program except where it can be put in row with a cash crop to aid early establishment.
  • We still need to be adding nitrogen in spite of increased availability because microbiologic activity eats up a lot of N in residue break down. You have to feed the bugs.

Range Beef Cow Symposium

Why Acclimate?

  • Teach cattle to recognize that the home pen is where they want to be.
  • Teach cattle to walk in straight lines -‐-‐ exit the home pen – travel with confidence down the alleyway and into the corral – walk past a handler with some element of trust.
  • Cattle gravitate toward the feed bunk and water tank more quickly; thereby going on feed more smoothly.
  • Enables safer, more effective handler –animal interactions which increases safety at the feed yard.
  • Comfortable Cattle = More efficient feed conversion and higher quality beef.
  • Acclimated cattle are easier to handle and make the …

Seismic Surveys And Marine Turtles: An Underestimated Global Threat?, Sarah E. Nelms, Wendy Dow Piniak, Caroline R. Weir, Brendan J. Godley

Environmental Studies Faculty Publications

Seismic surveys are widely used in marine geophysical oil and gas exploration, employing airguns to produce sound-waves capable of penetrating the sea floor. In recent years, concerns have been raised over the biological impacts of this activity, particularly for marine mammals. While exploration occurs in the waters of at least fifty countries where marine turtles are present, the degree of threat posed by seismic surveys is almost entirely unknown. To investigate this issue, a mixed-methods approach involving a systematic review, policy comparison and stakeholder analysis was employed and recommendations for future research were identified. This study found that turtles have …

The George H. Bradley Black Fly Papers (Diptera: Simuliidae), T. M. Nations, K. T. Edwards, J. Goddard

Midsouth Entomologist

Dr. George H. Bradley, a former USDA and Army entomologist, conducted research on a variety of medically important insects during his career; most notably mosquitoes (Diptera: Culicidae) and black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae). Much of Dr. Bradley’s personal library was donated to the Mississippi Entomological Museum at Mississippi State University after his death. Six of Dr. Bradley’s papers in that library, apparently never published, were discovered concerning the ecology and biology of the southern buffalo gnat, which he called Eusimulium pecuarum, (now known as Cnephia pecuarum). These unpublished works provide much needed and never before seen information on this medically important …

Section of Diabetes, Endocrinology and Metabolism

Objective: To compare mean homeostatic model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) in patients with and without chronicobstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).

Methods: A Case control analytic study was conducted in medical outpatient department of Medial Unit-II of Dow University of Health Sciences from April 2013 to September 2013. All patients with the diagnosis of COPD were included as cases. Controls were age match healthy individuals with minor illnesses. Age, weight, height and forced expiratory volume in one second to forced vital capacity (FEV1/FVC) ratio were documented. Fasting blood glucose and fasting insulin levels were done. Body mass index (BMI) …

Addressing Campus Sexual Assault Awareness Through Service Learning, Eileen J. Coussens

VA Engage Journal

ABSTRACT

This essay focuses on a Service Learning project which a group of students from my Advanced Composition class at Old Dominion University participated in regarding sexual assault awareness on college campuses. Throughout our class, we learned what Service Learning projects consist of and used what we learned to form our own proposals for projects that would reach from the classroom to the surrounding area to address community issues. We have written about our experiences with this Service Learning project in a reflective essay which acts as our final exam. In doing this, we also have attained our course goals …

Socially Responsible And Small: A Quantitative Study Of Corporate Social Responsibility In Small And Medium Organizations In The United States, Abigail Sorenson Berk

Dissertations

Corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a global imperative supported by governments, industry, and citizens alike. In 2000, the United Nations launched the Global Compact to encourage businesses to adopt socially responsible policies. In tandem, businesses became increasingly attentive to their social practices with the vast majority of executives declaring CSR important to their organization’s success. Despite this increase in attention – which occurred among businesses of all sizes – the academic literature on CSR has focused almost exclusively on large, public companies. Ironically, the majority of businesses in the United States are small, private businesses suggesting the existing CSR …

The Detection And Molecular Evolution Of Francisella Tularensis Subspecies, Mark K. Gunnell Nov 2015

The Detection And Molecular Evolution Of Francisella Tularensis Subspecies, Mark K. Gunnell

Theses and Dissertations

Francisella tularensis is the etiological agent of tularemia, a zoonotic disease with worldwide prevalence. F. tularensis is a highly pathogenic organism and has been designated as a potential biothreat agent. Currently there are four recognized subspecies of F. tularensis: tularensis (type A), holarctica (type B), mediasiatica, and novicida. In addition, genomic studies have further subdivided type A tularensis into two subclassifications, type A.I and type A.II. These two subclassifications differ in geographic distribution with type A.I appearing mainly in the Eastern United States and type A.II appearing mainly in the Western United States. Because of differences of virulence among the …

Nephrology Articles

OBJECTIVE: Many societies recommend using estimated glomerular filtration rate (eGFR) rather than serum creatinine (sCr) to determine metformin eligibility. We examined the potential impact of these recommendations on metformin eligibility among U.S. adults.

RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS: Metformin eligibility was assessed among 3,902 adults with diabetes who participated in the 1999-2010 National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys and reported routine access to health care, using conventional sCr thresholds (eligible if

RESULTS: Among adults with sCr above conventional cutoffs, MDRD eGFR ≥45 mL/min/1.73 m(2) was most common among men (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 33.3 [95% CI 7.4-151.5] vs. women) and non-Hispanic …

The Perceptions Of Elementary Stem Schools In Missouri, Kelli Michelle Alumbaugh Nov 2015

The Perceptions Of Elementary Stem Schools In Missouri, Kelli Michelle Alumbaugh

Dissertations

Science, technology, engineering, and mathematics education, or STEM, is an area that is currently growing in popularity with educators (Becker & Park, 2011). A qualitative study consisting of interviews was conducted and data were gathered from three leaders in professional STEM organizations, four principals from elementary STEM schools, and six teachers from elementary STEM schools to gain their perceptions of elementary STEM schools in Missouri. The perceptions of leaders in professional STEM organizations regarding STEM education were consistently all positive, and each leader was a proponent of STEM education at the elementary level. The perceptions of principals and teachers were …
