Designing Work: A Study Of Collaboration And Concentration In Open-Plan Offices, John Walsh Nov 2015

Designing Work: A Study Of Collaboration And Concentration In Open-Plan Offices, John Walsh

Academic Articles

This article looks at the design of open-plan offices, particularly in relation to the impact of spatial design on different work-modes. It examines the history of the open-plan office, looking at how the open-plan workplace has evolved. It reports the findings of a survey on office design of 150 office workers across multiple industry sectors, job types and age categories. Finally, assuming there will not be a return en masse to the traditional, space hungry, cellular office for most knowledge workers this article considers what have we learned so far, and how spaces can be designed to support different work-modes, …

Biomedical developments in the 21st century provide an unprecedented opportunity to gain a dynamic systems-level and human-specific understanding of the causes and pathophysiologies of disease. This understanding is a vital need, in view of continuing failures in health research, drug discovery, and clinical translation. The full potential of advanced approaches may not be achieved within a 20th-century conceptual framework dominated by animal models. Novel technologies are being integrated into environmental health research and are also applicable to disease research, but these advances need a new medical research and drug discovery paradigm to gain maximal benefits. We suggest a new conceptual …

Physiology Collection

Stereotypies are repetitive and relatively invariant patterns of behavior, which are observed in a wide range of species in captivity. Stereotypic behavior occurs when environmental demands produce a physiological response that, if sustained for an extended period, exceeds the natural physiological regulatory capacity of the organism, particularly in situations that include unpredictability and uncontrollability. One hypothesis is that stereotypic behavior functions to cope with stressful environments, but the existing evidence is contradictory. To address the coping hypothesis of stereotypies, we triggered physiological reactions in 22 horses affected by stereotypic behavior (crib-biters) and 21 non-crib-biters (controls), using an ACTH challenge test. …

Veganism As An Aspiration, Lori Gruen, Robert C. Jones Nov 2015

Veganism As An Aspiration, Lori Gruen, Robert C. Jones

Dietary Choice and Foods of Animal Origin Collection

iven the violence, objectification, domination, commodification, and oppression inherent in industrialized food production, some conscientious consumers have adopted vegan practices. This chapter discusses two conceptions of veganism, lifestyle/identity veganism, VI, and veganism as a goal/aspiration, VA. It argues that due to conceptual and practical flaws with VI, conscientious consumers should adopt VA. It considers and rejects the so-called compassionate carnivore movement. It then explores arguments denying the casual efficacy of adopting any form of veganism. It concludes that VA can make a difference, and those in consumer cultures are obligated to adopt and practice it.

The Breakup: The Declaration Of Independence, Frederick Douglass, And Me, Kristin R. Lindsey Nov 2015

The Breakup: The Declaration Of Independence, Frederick Douglass, And Me, Kristin R. Lindsey

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The Declaration of Independence declared sovereignty and freedom for America predicated upon the inherent equality and rights of its people. The Declaration also invented a revolutionary expectation and right of protest should government fail to deliver and protect those rights. These rights and self-evident truths, this paper argues, were never extended, or intended, for the nation's Black inhabitants. This underlying hypocrisy has led generations of African Americahs, from the nation's beginning through current day, to careen between hope, desp air, fighting back, deciding to leave, or demanding change. This paper explores the meaning of the Declaration, the experience of black …

Demystifying The Welfare State: The Case Of The Republic Of Moldova, Claudette M. Sevcenco Nov 2015

Demystifying The Welfare State: The Case Of The Republic Of Moldova, Claudette M. Sevcenco

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

During the communist era, Eastern Europe and the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics (USSR) shared a similar welfare system in which welfare states were part of an inseparable political and economic system controlled by a totalitarian power i.e., the Communist Party. After the fall of the USSR, in 1989, an end to social provision led to a massive recession that created pressures within the welfare state system. Despite similar pre-transition welfare state structures, the newly independent countries drastically diverged in how they developed their welfare state: some began pursuing integration into the European Union (EU) while others remained uncertain of …

The Africa Command: How The Department Of Defense Has Continued America’S Ad-Hoc Foreign Policies In Africa Through Neo-Orientalism, Katherine T. Roseman Nov 2015

The Africa Command: How The Department Of Defense Has Continued America’S Ad-Hoc Foreign Policies In Africa Through Neo-Orientalism, Katherine T. Roseman

College of Liberal Arts & Social Sciences Theses and Dissertations

The Africa Command (AFRICOM) was established in October 2008 on the premise of a partnership between the United States Department of Defense (DOD) and African militaries in which shared goals were to be pursued and each side was to learn from the other. However, no African counterparts were consulted during the processes leading up to the establishment of the Command. Notwithstanding the oft-repeated rhetoric of “partnerships” by the Bush Administration, in reality, AFRICOM was created to more effectively implement U.S. foreign policy in Africa, most notably containing terrorism after 9/11. This thesis examines the relationship between the U.S. and Africa …

Psychology Faculty Publications

The influence of aggressive and violent media on children and adolescents has been a topic of concern for several decades. Research on this topic has suggested that both short term and long term exposure to aggressive/violent media can negatively impact this population. The purpose of this literature review is to discuss relevant research on the topic and examine various factors that may impact the risk of being influenced by this type of media. These factors can include time spent viewing media, content of the media viewed, gender, age, psychological characteristics, family, and peers. Various theoretical approaches to explaining the influence …

Identification Of Novel Gastric Stem Cell Markers And Investigation Of Intestinal Stem Cell Cre-Mediated Recombination, Theresa M. Keeley Nov 2015

Identification Of Novel Gastric Stem Cell Markers And Investigation Of Intestinal Stem Cell Cre-Mediated Recombination, Theresa M. Keeley

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Very few genetic markers for gastric stem cells are currently described. Identifying new markers is important for increasing our basic understanding of gastric tissues and studying mechanisms of cancer development. Gastric and intestinal tissues share a common developmental program. Thus, intestinal stem cell genetic drivers were investigated for putative expression in gastric stem cells, utilizing Cre/Lox technology for lineage tracing. The recombination efficiencies of reporters with intestinal drivers and the effect of tamoxifen-induced tissue damage were also investigated.

It was discovered that higher doses of tamoxifen do not increase reporter activation in the intestine but induce gastric tissue damage. It …

Caveolin-1 Deficiency Inhibits The Basolateral K+ Channels In The Distal Convoluted Tubule And Impairs Renal K+ And Mg2+ Transport, Lijun Wang, Chengbiao Zhang, Xiaotong Su, Dao-Hong Lin, Wenhui Wang Nov 2015

Caveolin-1 Deficiency Inhibits The Basolateral K+ Channels In The Distal Convoluted Tubule And Impairs Renal K+ And Mg2+ Transport, Lijun Wang, Chengbiao Zhang, Xiaotong Su, Dao-Hong Lin, Wenhui Wang

NYMC Faculty Publications

Kcnj10 encodes the inwardly rectifying K(+) channel Kir4.1 in the basolateral membrane of the distal convoluted tubule (DCT) and is activated by c-Src. However, the regulation and function of this K(+) channel are incompletely characterized. Here, patch-clamp experiments in Kcnj10-transfected HEK293 cells demonstrated that c-Src-induced stimulation of Kcnj10 requires coexpression of caveolin-1 (cav-1), and immunostaining showed expression of cav-1 in the basolateral membrane of parvalbumin-positive DCT. Patch-clamp experiments detected a 40-pS inwardly rectifying K(+) channel, a heterotetramer of Kir4.1/Kir5.1, in the basolateral membrane of the early DCT (DCT1) in both wild-type (WT) and cav-1-knockout (KO) mice. However, the activity of …

NYMC Faculty Publications

The renal phenotype of EAST syndrome, a disease caused by the loss-of-function-mutations of Kcnj10 (Kir4.1), is a reminiscence of Gitelman's syndrome characterized by the defective function in the distal convoluted tubule (DCT). The aim of the present study is to test whether antidiuretic hormone (vasopressin)-induced stimulation of the Na(+)-activated 80-150pS K(+) channel is responsible for compensating the lost function of Kcnj10 in the thick ascending limb (TAL) of subjects with EAST syndrome. Immunostaining and western blot showed that the expression of aquaporin 2 (AQP2) was significantly higher in Kcnj10(-/-) mice than those of WT littermates, suggesting that the disruption of …

Comparison Of Knee Moments And Landing Patterns During A Lateral Cutting Maneuver: Shod Vs. Barefoot, Brianna A. Bisesti, Michael A. Lawrence, Alexander J. Koch, Lara A. Carlson

Athletic Training Student Publications

Non-contact anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injuries often occur during lateral cutting maneuvers where extension, adduction, and external rotation create high loads on the ACL. The aim of this study was to examine knee moments and foot strike patterns during lateral cutting while shod (SD) and barefoot (BF). Fifteen NCAA Division III athletes (7 female and 8 male; age 20.2 ± 1.5 yr; mass 71.5 ± 11.3 kg; height, 1.7 ± .06 m) without lower limb pathologies were analyzed during 5 trials of 45 degree lateral cutting maneuvers for each limb in both BF and SD conditions with the approach speed …

Promoting Transgender Understanding And Acceptance At A Jesuit University, Stefan Rowniak, Chenit Ong-Flaherty

Nursing and Health Professions Faculty Research and Publications

Transgender individuals have faced and continue to face misunderstanding and severe discrimination in society and in accessing the provision of healthcare. Two nursing faculty at a Jesuit university addressed this issue in a Jesuit community dialogue supported by a Jesuit grant. This dialogue was framed within Jesuit teachings and was consistent with the value of social justice, something fundamental to both the profession of nursing and Jesuit teachings. Three transgender individuals and a Jesuit priest each spoke of their personal experience and then opened the dialogue up for questions. Faculty and students overwhelmingly found the dialogue to be helpful and …
