Data Analysis Of Medical Records In Veterinary Hospital Using Clustering Method And Association Rule, Tsung-Chih Hsiao, Shu-Ling Shieh, Tzer-Long Chen, Chia-Hui Liu, Ying-Chi Yeh

Applied Mathematics & Information Sciences

Since pets have been promoted from working livestock to family companions, pet industry is also progressing with the development of nowadays? society. To reduce the negligence of the diagnostic process, the correlations between the symptoms and treatments of sick pets are collected. Medical records of a veterinary hospital are used as the input dataset. The clustering algorithms and association rules use two methods to investigate the practice. The result indicates that urology, dermatology or internal medicines are highly correlated with possible symptoms. The conclusion could assist doctors to find the association rules between diseases and symptoms of pets. In this …

NYMC Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Infantile spasms (IS) is a devastating epileptic encephalopathy. The ketogenic diet (KD) has been successfully used as a treatment for IS. This study was designed to test whether beta-hydroxybutyrate (BHB), a major metabolite of the KD, is effective in an animal model of IS. METHODS: Pregnant rats received betamethasone on gestational day 15. The offspring received either single [30min prior to NMDA-triggered spasms on postnatal day (P) 15] or prolonged (three per day from P12 to P15) i.p. BHB. An additional experiment used repeated bouts of spasms on P12, P13, and P15 with randomized prolonged BHB treatment initiated after …

Rural Adults Delay, Forego, And Strategize To Afford Their Pre-Aca Health Care, Erika C. Ziller Phd, Jennifer D. Lenardson Mhs, Andrew F. Coburn Phd

Access / Insurance

About 40% of non-elderly adults reported problems paying medical bills or cost-related barriers to obtaining needed medical care in 2012, difficulties that are especially pronounced for the uninsured and underinsured, the chronically-ill, and those with low incomes. Given their lower incomes and higher uninsured rates compared to urban residents, rural residents may face particular cost barriers in accessing health care. Past research has shown that, compared to urban residents, rural residents are more likely to experience higher out-of-pocket costs and delayed or foregone care as a result of cost, even when covered by private health insurance. This study provides detailed …

Student Theses, Dissertations and Capstones

Objective: The purpose of this ex vivo study was to assess the changes in tooth color and existing orthodontic bracket bonding when exposed to a bleaching agent. Methods: 120 freshly extracted human premolars were equally divided into 4 groups: a negative-control group, a positive-control bleaching group, a bracket-bonded group, and a bracket bonded-bleached group. The bleaching protocol was carried out as recommended by the manufacturer of Opalescence Go® – 30 minutes each day for 10 consecutive days. The color value of each tooth was measured daily by spectrophotometry for the negative-control group and the positive-control bleaching group in 6 different …

Viewpoint: A Response To "Screening And Isolation To Control Methicillin-Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus: Sense, Nonsense, And Evidence", Kevin T. Kavanagh, Lindsay Calderon, Daniel Saman

Biological Sciences Faculty and Staff Research

Surveillance and isolation for the prevention of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has become a controversial topic, one that causes heated debate and appears to be surrounded by both politics and industrial conflicts-of-interest. There have been calls from numerous authors for a movement away from rigid mandates and toward an evidence-based medicine approach. However, much of the evidence can be viewed with an entirely different interpretation. Two major studies with negative findings have had an adverse impact on recommendations regarding active detection and isolation (ADI) for MRSA. However the negative findings in these studies can be explained by shortcomings in study …

Doctrine As Pastoral Care At Bethel Lutheran, Gurnee, Illinois, To Support Members Who Are In Multi-Denominational Settings, Benjamin Squires Nov 2015

Doctrine As Pastoral Care At Bethel Lutheran, Gurnee, Illinois, To Support Members Who Are In Multi-Denominational Settings, Benjamin Squires

Doctor of Ministry Major Applied Project

The “doctrine as pastoral care” formation experience process developed for Bethel, and possibly for use by other Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod congregations, will encourage a faithful, confessional, Lutheran perspective for those members who are engaged in conversation and mission with people taught according to different Christian systematics. While the steps of this process might be duplicated with other members for a similar goal of “doctrine as pastoral care” to support multi-denominational engagement, the actual content—and perhaps even specific formation activities—will differ according to the themes from the initial interviews of future participants.

Solution-Focused Strategies For Effective Sexual Health Communication Among African American Parents And Their Adolescents, Sharon Johnson, Sha-Lai Williams Nov 2015

Solution-Focused Strategies For Effective Sexual Health Communication Among African American Parents And Their Adolescents, Sharon Johnson, Sha-Lai Williams

Social Work Faculty Works

The high rates of sexual risk behaviors, particularly among African American youths who may not be aware of their HIV status, provide indication that, unless prevention efforts are enhanced, this vulnerable group of youths will remain at greater risk for negative health status outcomes. Parents are important in efforts to reduce risk among youths and often have a willingness to be sexuality educators for their children; however, communication barriers often impede their ability to provide preventive sexual health knowledge to their youths. Social workers are often presented with opportunities to help parents develop effective sexual health communication skills in informal …

Attention Bias And Anxiety In Young Children Exposed To Family Violence, Margaret J. Briggs-Gowan, Seth D. Pollak, Damion Grasso, Joel Voss, Nicholas D. Mian, Elvira Zobel, Kimberly J. Mccarthy, Lauren S. Wakschlag, Daniel S. Pine

Life Sciences Faculty Scholarship

Background—Attention bias towards threat is associated with anxiety in older youth and adults and has been linked with violence exposure. Attention bias may moderate the relationship between violence exposure and anxiety in young children. Capitalizing on measurement advances, the current study examines these relationships at a younger age than previously possible. Methods—Young children (mean age 4.7, ±0.8) from a cross-sectional sample oversampled for violence exposure (N = 218) completed the dot-probe task to assess their attention biases. Observed fear/anxiety was characterized with a novel observational paradigm, the Anxiety Diagnostic Observation Schedule. Mother-reported symptoms were assessed with the Preschool-Age Psychiatric Assessment …

Rna Interference: Potato/Tomato Psyllid, Bactericera Cockerelli, Oral Delivery Of Double-Stranded Rnai Construct, Bijaya Kumar Sharma

Biology Theses

The potato/tomato psyllid, Bactericera cockerelli (Sulc.), is a serious and economically important pest of the potato, tomato and other solanaceous crops. This insect is the putative primary vector of the phytopathogenic bacterium Candidatus Liberibacter solanacearum which causes the Zebra Chip in potato. This disease has caused millions of dollars loss to the potato industry. While traditional management programs have minimized the negative impacts of this disease system, a sustainable alternative to chemical treatment is needed. Management of this pest by downregulation of endogenous mRNA using RNA interference (RNAi) technology is one of the best molecular method available; however, several technical …

College of Science & Mathematics Departmental Research

IMPORTANCE: Adolescents whose parents have a history of depression are at risk for developing depression and functional impairment. The long-term effects of prevention programs on adolescent depression and functioning are not known.

OBJECTIVE: To determine whether a cognitive-behavioral prevention (CBP) program reduced the incidence of depressive episodes, increased depression-free days, and improved developmental competence 6 years after implementation.

DESIGN, SETTING, AND PARTICIPANTS: A 4-site randomized clinical trial compared the effect of CBP plus usual care vs usual care, through follow-up 75 months after the intervention (88% retention), with recruitment from August 2003 through February 2006 at a health maintenance organization, …

Formalizing Community Interpreting Standards: A Cross-National Comparison Of Testing Systems, Certification Conventions And Recent Iso Guidelines, Jim Hlavac Nov 2015

Formalizing Community Interpreting Standards: A Cross-National Comparison Of Testing Systems, Certification Conventions And Recent Iso Guidelines, Jim Hlavac

International Journal of Interpreter Education

Community interpreting has become a global phenomenon, and the need for standard assurances of practice is being met by credentialing systems that certify a community interpreter through testing and/or training. This paper examines credentialing systems in Australia, Canada, Norway and the UK and poses the questions of whether the spread and development of testing systems has led to a widening of the skills now required for community interpreting, and whether testing alone is a means for the demonstration of all of these skills. Some attributes of credential candidates are pretest admission prerequisites. Testing alone is the common pathway for community …
