Cities And The Environment: Eight Years Of Urban Ecology Research And Practice, Eric G. Strauss, Laurel Hunt, Michele Romolini, Dexter H. Locke

Cities and the Environment (CATE)

Since its inception, Cities and the Environment has sought to showcase a broad range of urban environmental research and practice. Thus, as we celebrate the closing of our eighth anniversary, the purpose of this paper is to remind (or, for some, introduce) researchers and practitioners of the aims and scope of the journal by describing the first eight years of its history, and to outline our vision for the next eight years.

Rhetorical Strategies Of Visual Pleasure In Situation Comedies: 'Friends' And Female Body Image, Deanna Sellnow, Jonna Reule Ziniel Nov 2015

Rhetorical Strategies Of Visual Pleasure In Situation Comedies: 'Friends' And Female Body Image, Deanna Sellnow, Jonna Reule Ziniel

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

The visual messages conveyed by and about the female characters on Friends reinforce hegemonic ideals of femininity and an ideal female body image that is excessively thin. Messages of narcissism, voyeurism, and fetishism draw adolescent female viewers to identify with the images, characteristics, and behaviors of Rachel and Monica as models and to distance themselves from the images, characteristics, and behaviors of Phoebe and “Fat Monica” as anti-models. The messages sometimes overtly and often covertly perpetuate hegemonic stereotypes about women. Messages advocate that the ideal female body image is a sex object, and the most desirable sex objects are excessively …

Communication Is 93% Nonverbal: An Urban Legend Proliferates, David Lapakko Nov 2015

Communication Is 93% Nonverbal: An Urban Legend Proliferates, David Lapakko

Communication and Theater Association of Minnesota Journal

Perhaps the best-known numbers within the communication field are those that claim the total meaning of a message is “7 percent verbal, 38 percent vocal, and 55 percent facial.” Despite the fact that this finding is derived from two 1967 studies with serious methodological limitations, these percentages have appeared in a wide variety of communication textbooks. This study takes the investigation a step further, beyond the academic environment, to determine if the 7-38-55 “formula” has now become the equivalent of an “urban legend” about communication in our society-at-large. Overall, this article finds that the formula in question has been widely …

Body Weight Supported Treadmill Training And Overground Gait Training In The In-Patient Setting For An Individual With Chronic Stroke: A Case Report, Stephanie Bordignon Nov 2015

Body Weight Supported Treadmill Training And Overground Gait Training In The In-Patient Setting For An Individual With Chronic Stroke: A Case Report, Stephanie Bordignon

Case Report Posters

795,000 people in USA have a new or recurrent stroke each year, leaving them with spatiotemporal gait abnormalities. Following D/C from in-patient rehab, many patients continue to experience activity limitations & participation restrictions secondary to limited walking ability. The use of BWSTT & overground GT has been shown to improve bilateral coordination and gait symmetry for patients with chronic stroke. Evidence for BWSTT rather than overground GT is mixed and does not include representation for the young stroke population. The purpose of this case report was to describe the outcomes of gait speed, efficiency of gait, and fall risk in …

Use Of Complete Decongestive Therapy And A Task-Oriented Approach In Treating Secondary Lymphedema And Improving Ambulation In A Patient Following A Stroke: A Case Report, Snezhana Rudakova Nov 2015

Use Of Complete Decongestive Therapy And A Task-Oriented Approach In Treating Secondary Lymphedema And Improving Ambulation In A Patient Following A Stroke: A Case Report, Snezhana Rudakova

Case Report Posters

Every year, approximately 795,000 people in the United States experience a new or recurrent stroke. More than 30% of the survivors cannot walk independently six months following a stroke. Of those who are able to walk independently, only a small proportion can walk with sufficient speed and endurance to be able to function within the community. Paralysis of the extremities leads to a decreased and ineffective muscle pumping action, resulting in lymph stasis. Lymphedema is the tissue fluid accumulation that arises due to impaired lymphatic drainage. Fluid accumulation further increases difficulty with ambulation post stroke. The purpose of this case …

A Case Study: The Development Of Safety Tip Sheets For Atv Use In Ranching, Elise Lagerstrom, David P. Gilkey, John Rosecrance, Stacy Hibiske

Safety Health & Industrial Hygiene

Use of all-terrain vehicles (ATVs) has become standard practice on the modern ranch. The unique operating conditions present on a ranch, subject the occupational ATV user to hazards requiring awareness and specialized training. The purpose of this study was to apply social marketing methods to address a specific environmental health and safety issue present in the agricultural industry. A series of four ATV tip sheets were created in topic areas specific to the challenges that ATV operators encounter on a ranch. In order to evaluate the intended audiences’ perception of the tip sheets, a questionnaire was administered to all agriculture …

How Healthy Is Your Library? Diagnosing Culture And Curing The Patient, Emily A. Hicks Nov 2015

How Healthy Is Your Library? Diagnosing Culture And Curing The Patient, Emily A. Hicks

Roesch Library Faculty Presentations

Every library has a distinctive organizational culture with norms, values, rules, beliefs, and basic assumptions that have developed over time and are shared by the people who make up the organization. This culture shapes the perceptions and assumptions of the library’s personnel. A healthy culture can evoke a passion for the work, a loyalty and commitment to the organization’s mission, and a deep-seated belief in the organization’s value.

Libraries with a healthy culture are resilient, responsive, and inclusive. The health of an organization is the responsibility of every member, not just the formal leadership.

Transitioning Towards Inclusion: The Quest For Equality At The Collegiate Level, Kade Joseph Lee Patterson

University Honors Program

The research inquires into the reception that members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) community receive in general, especially transgender people in particular. Different scholars and researchers have pointed out that the states have not legislated adequately or have entirely failed to legislate protection for the rights of transgender people. Other scholars have equally pointed out that there is segregation and discrimination against transgender people at the collegiate level. The research reviews the findings of various scholars who have conducted surveys on the topic. The next standard of the research is a practical investigation done on various respondents …

Abt-199 (Venetoclax) And Bcl-2 Inhibitors In Clinical Development, Shundong Cang, Chaitanya Iragavarapu, John Savooji, Yongping Song, Delong Liu

NYMC Faculty Publications

With the advent of new agents targeting CD20, Bruton's tyrosine kinase, and phosphoinositol-3 kinase for chronic lymphoid leukemia (CLL), more treatment options exist than ever before. B-cell lymphoma-2 (BCL-2) plays a major role in cellular apoptosis and is a druggable target. Small molecule inhibitors of BCL-2 are in active clinical studies. ABT-199 (venetoclax, RG7601, GDC-0199) has been granted breakthrough designation by FDA for relapsed or refractory CLL with 17p deletion. In this review, we summarized the latest clinical development of ABT-199/venetoclax and other novel agents targeting the BCL-2 proteins.
