Recent Dieback In A Keystone Chaparral Species Is Caused By A Fungal Pathogen, Botryosphaeria Dothidea, Adriana Borges, Frida Morales, Emily Pierce, Mariah Taylor

Biology

Due to the recent drought in Southern California, the abundance of a keystone species, Malosma laurina, within the Santa Monica Mountains (SMM) has been dwindling. This species has a rooting depth that exceeds 13 m, so it typically has little difficulty tapping into the water table. Recently, this species has undergone extensive dieback, which might be attributed to the unprecedented drought in California and predisposition fungal pathogen Botryosphaeria. dothidea. While this fungi appears to be innocuous to M. laurina when the plant is healthy, it is more susceptible to invasion under water stress due to the dry and …

This study investigated the relationship between host efflux system of the non-vertebrate nematode Caenorhabditis elegans and Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) strain virulence. This is the first comprehensive effort to profile host-transporters within the context of Bcc infection. With this aim, two different toxicity tests were performed: a slow killing assay that monitors mortality of the host by intestinal colonization and a fast killing assay that assesses production of toxins. A Virulence Ranking scheme was defined, that expressed the toxicity of the Bcc panel members, based on the percentage of surviving worms. According to this ranking the 18 Bcc strains were …

Governing Water In Canada: The Legislative Experiments In New Governance, Patricia Hania Nov 2015

Governing Water In Canada: The Legislative Experiments In New Governance, Patricia Hania

PhD Dissertations

Governing water in Canada is in transition. Since 2000, episodes of drought, unsafe drinking water, and polluted watersheds have affected local and First Nations communities. In reaction to these crises, provincial regulators entered a new governance phase. This regulatory turn profoundly transforms the traditional environmental regulatory approach by introducing a collaborative new governance arrangement. The legal scholarship is generally supportive of this trend, however, a dearth of empirical research exists to understand how decisions are made under this new regulatory approach.

This dissertation presents an eco-resiliency framework to examine the responsiveness of this new governance mode to environmental change. The …

Quality Of Reporting And Adherence To Arrive Guidelines In Animal Studies For Chagas Disease Preclinical Drug Research: A Systematic Review, Julián Ernesto Nicolás Gulin, Daniela Marisa Rocco, Facundo García-Bournissen Nov 2015

Quality Of Reporting And Adherence To Arrive Guidelines In Animal Studies For Chagas Disease Preclinical Drug Research: A Systematic Review, Julián Ernesto Nicolás Gulin, Daniela Marisa Rocco, Facundo García-Bournissen

Paediatrics Publications

Publication of accurate and detailed descriptions of methods in research articles involving animals is essential for health scientists to accurately interpret published data, evaluate results and replicate findings. Inadequate reporting of key aspects of experimental design may reduce the impact of studies and could act as a barrier to translation of research findings. Reporting of animal use must be as comprehensive as possible in order to take advantage of every study and every animal used. Animal models are essential to understanding and assessing new chemotherapy candidates for Chagas disease pathology, a widespread parasitic disease with few treatment options currently available. …

13C Tracer Studies Of Metabolism In Mouse Tumor Xenografts, Andrew N. Lane, Jun Yan, Teresa W-M Fan Nov 2015

13C Tracer Studies Of Metabolism In Mouse Tumor Xenografts, Andrew N. Lane, Jun Yan, Teresa W-M Fan

Toxicology and Cancer Biology Faculty Publications

Mice are widely used for human tumor xenograft studies of cancer development and drug efficacy and toxicity. Stable isotope tracing coupled with metabolomic analysis is an emerging approach for assaying metabolic network activity. In mouse models there are several routes of tracer introduction, which have particular advantages and disadvantages that depend on the model and the questions addressed. This protocol describes the bolus i.v. route via repeated tail vein injections of solutions of stable isotope enriched tracers including 13C6-glucose and 13C5,15N2-glutamine. Repeated injections give higher enrichments and over longer labeling …

A Comparison Of Site Manager Competencies And Attributes In Ireland With Those Of The Site Superintendent In The United States, David Gunderson, Lloyd Scott, Gene Glockner

Conference papers

The construction industry is one of the oldest internationalized economic sectors dating back more than 100 years. The role of construction site manager or superintendent is one of the most important contributing to project success. In 2013 the authors utilized mixed methods research to determine which Site Manager competencies and attributes were most important for project success in Ireland. These data were compared to a 2010 research project in the United States which used a similar survey to identify construction Superintendents’ competencies and attributes required forsuccess. Forty-two competencies and attributes were identified and ranked in order of importance. Comparing data …

A Comparison Of Macroinfaunal Community Structure Between Artificial Concrete Boulder Reefs And Adjacent Natural Reefs In Broward County, Florida, Amber C. Metallo

HCNSO Student Theses and Dissertations

Relatively little is known about either the biological (i.e., predation) or physical (i.e., current, sedimentation) effects that artificial reefs may have on surrounding benthic infaunal communities. Following deployment of artificial reefs (concrete boulders) between the first and second reefs off Fort Lauderdale, Florida, on 30 October 2009, sediment cores were taken at 4 distances along three replicate 10-m transects on 13 and 26 September 2013, and 24 and 25 May 2014 at each of four artificial reef sites and four of their adjacent natural reef sites using SCUBA. Infauna (>0.5mm) were extracted from the sediment and identified to the …

Bridging The Gap: A Pictorial History Of The Arkansas Affiliate Of The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, Nikki K. Senn

Theses and Dissertations

The Arkansas Affiliate of the Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation, based in Little Rock, Arkansas, functions as a not-for-profit, philanthropic entity within the breast cancer movement, which gained momentum in the 1980s. This process paper delves into how the Susan G. Komen Arkansas piece fits into the puzzle that is the breast cancer movement. I assessed the breast cancer movement and the development of medical philanthropic entities. The paper also covers methodology and guidelines followed throughout the project. Results of my research exist in this process paper that accompanies the actual project portion of the thesis, a coffee table …

Effects Of Phosphorus On Chemical Forms Of Cd In Plants Of Four Spinach (Spinacia Oleracea L.) Cultivars Differing In Cd Accumulation, Aiguo Yin, Zhongyi Yang, Stephen Ebbs, Jiangang Yuan, Jianbin Wang, Junzhi Yang Nov 2015

Effects Of Phosphorus On Chemical Forms Of Cd In Plants Of Four Spinach (Spinacia Oleracea L.) Cultivars Differing In Cd Accumulation, Aiguo Yin, Zhongyi Yang, Stephen Ebbs, Jiangang Yuan, Jianbin Wang, Junzhi Yang

Publications

In order to clarify how cadmium (Cd) chemical forms in planta relate to the genotype difference in Cd accumulation of spinach (Spinacia oleracea L.), two low-Cd and two high-Cd cultivars were compared under a hydroponic experiment with two concentrations of Cd (8.98 or 44.71 μmol Cd L(-1)). The concentrations of phosphorus in the hydroponic system were also adjusted to two levels (0.5 and 1.0 mmol L(-1)) to investigate the influence of phosphorus on the forms and accumulation of Cd in the tested cultivars. Average Cd concentrations in shoots were 8.50-10.06 mg kg(-1) for high-Cd cultivars and 6.11-6.64 mg kg(-1) for …

We report the genome of a Staphylococcus aureus strain (ILRI_Eymole1/1) isolated from a nasal swab of a dromedary camel (Camelus dromedarius) in North Kenya. The complete genome sequence of this strain consists of a circular chromosome of 2,874,302 bp with a GC-content of 32.88 %. In silico annotation predicted 2755 protein-encoding genes and 76 non-coding genes. This isolate belongs to MLST sequence type 30 (ST30). Phylogenetic analysis based on a subset of 283 core genes revealed that it falls within the human clonal complex 30 (CC30) S. aureus isolate cluster but is genetically distinct. About 79 % of the protein …
