Living Your Best Life: Identities Of Televangelist Joel Osteen And His Imagined Audience, Reginald Bell Jr. Nov 2015

Living Your Best Life: Identities Of Televangelist Joel Osteen And His Imagined Audience, Reginald Bell Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

How does one analyze the impact of televangelist Joel Osteen? Attempts have been made to answer this question primarily from a theological perspective and occassionally from cultural and media perspectives. Though these analytical lenses have provided some limited insight into Osteen, his rise to prominence, and the growth of his ministry, none has sufficiently addressed or critcally analyzed Osteen's discursive artistry. Utilizing important analytical principles and research tools from the field of Communication, this dissertation provides three new critical lenses: first persona, second persona, and third persona. These lenses will help televangelist studies uncover the artistry and compliexity of how …

Biology Faculty Publications and Presentations

Mutations in WNK1 and WNK4, and in components of the Cullin-Ring Ligase system, kelch-like 3 (KLHL3) and Cullin 3 (CUL3), can cause the rare hereditary disease, Familial Hyperkalemic Hypertension (FHHt). The disease is characterized by overactivity of the renal sodium chloride cotransporter (NCC), which is phosphorylated and activated by the WNK-stimulated Ste20-type kinases, SPAK and OSR1. WNK kinases themselves can be targeted for ubiquitination and degradataion by the CUL3-KLHL3 E3 ubiquitin ligase complex. It is unclear, however, why there are significant differences in phenotypic severity among FHHt patients with mutations in different genes. It was reported that kelch-like 2 (KLHL2), …

Synthesis Of Agents For The Treatment And Analysis Of Tropical Diseases, Jeanine Yacoub

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Toxoplasmosis is an opportunistic disease caused by the protozoan parasite Toxoplasma gondii. The parasite is usually staved off by a healthy immune system and remains dormant in the body. In immunocompromised patients, the parasite can become active and spread throughout the body causing symptoms such as encephalitis, cognitive disorders, seizures, and death. Combination drug therapy is the usual treatment for toxoplasmosis; however, patients suffer from problems of intolerance, allergic reactions, and cytotoxicity. In an effort to identify new drug targets for toxoplasmosis, a series of compounds have been synthesized that can be used as tools to probe the unique …

Detection Of Sleep Disordered Breathing In Patients Hospitalized With Congestive Heart Failure, Sunil Sharma, Paul Mather Nov 2015

Detection Of Sleep Disordered Breathing In Patients Hospitalized With Congestive Heart Failure, Sunil Sharma, Paul Mather

Department of Sleep Medicine Faculty Papers

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the plethysmographic signal-derived oxygen desaturation index (ODI) as an inpatient screening strategy to identify sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in patients with congestive heart failure (CHF).

BACKGROUND: SDB is highly prevalent among patients hospitalized with CHF but is widely underdiagnosed. We evaluated overnight photoplethysmography as a possible screening strategy for hospitalized patients with CHF.

METHODS: Consecutively admitted heart failure patients with high clinical suspicion of SDB and ODI ≥5 were offered outpatient polysomnography (PSG), which was completed within 4 weeks of discharge. PSG was considered positive if the apnea hypoxia index (AHI) was …

The International Health Regulations 10 Years On: The Governing Framework For Global Health Security, Lawrence O. Gostin, Mary C. Debartolo, Eric A. Friedman

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

The World Health Organization (WHO) and its global health security treaty, the International Health Regulations (2005) (IHR) have lost the world's confidence after the West African Ebola epidemic. The epidemic led to several high-level reviews of the IHR and global health security more broadly. Here, we propose a series of recommendations for operational and legal reforms to enhance the functioning of the FCGH. It is critical that WHO act on them quickly, before the window of opportunity for fundamental reform closes.

WHO should ensure that all states fulfill their obligations to develop national core surveillance and response capacities, including through …

Examining Older Adults' Perceptions Of Usability And Acceptability Of Remote Monitoring Systems To Manage Chronic Heart Failure, Lorraine S. Evangelista, Debra K. Moser, Jung-Ah Lee, Alison A. Moore, Hassan Ghasemzadeh, Majid Sarrafzadeh, Carol M. Mangione

Nursing Faculty Publications

Objective: This study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility, usability, and acceptability of using remote monitoring systems (RMS) in monitoring health status (e.g., vital signs, symptom distress) in older adults (≥ 55) with chronic heart failure (HF). Method: Twenty-one patients (52.4% women, mean age 73.1 ± 9.3) were trained to measure and transmit health data with an RMS. Data transmissions were tracked for 12 weeks. Results: All participants initiated use of RMS within 1 week; 71%, 14%, and 14% of patients transmitted daily health data 100%, ≥ 75%, and < 75% of the time, respectively, for 12 weeks. Overall usability and acceptability of the RMS were 4.08 ± 0.634 and 4.10 ± 0.563, respectively (when scored on a range of 1-5, where 1 = strongly disagree and 5 = strongly agree). Discussion: Findings show …

Olfactory Associative Learning In Two African Stingless Bee Species (Meliponula Ferruginea And M. Bocandei, Meliponini), J. Henske, K. Krausa, F. A. Hager, K. Nkoba, W. H. Kirchner

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Worldwide only a few of the more than 500 stingless bee species has been studied in any detail. Most studies on stingless bees have been conducted in the Neotropics, whereas a very few have been undertaken in Africa. Foraging success is dependent to a greater or lesser extent on olfactory cues or signals. A prerequisite to effective foraging via odors is that the bees are able to associate odors with a nectar reward and memorize this information. In the context of olfactory learning, only five species of stingless bees have been studied using classical conditioning of the proboscis extension reflex …

The Negotiation And Development Of Writing Teacher Identities In Elementary Education, Shartriya M. Collier, Suzanne Scheld, Ian Barnard, Jackie Stallcup

Teaching/Writing: The Journal of Writing Teacher Education

Identity development in writing is a unique process. While many studies have explored the process of developing a professional identity among future teachers, few studies have investigated how teacher candidates develop a writing teacher’s identity. This study explores the development and negotiation of writing teacher identity among 21 pre-service multiple-subject teacher candidates at a large public institution in California. More specifically, the study examines the students’ journeys as they transformed from students of writing in a university methods course to student teachers of writing in a local school district. Our findings indicate that the use of a sociocultural-based approach to …

Signaling Mechanisms That Control Ciliated Cell Differentiation, Benjamin John Gerovac Nov 2015

Signaling Mechanisms That Control Ciliated Cell Differentiation, Benjamin John Gerovac

Open Access Dissertations

An innate front-line defense mechanism termed mucociliary clearance (MCC) occurs in the airway epithelium and is critical for respiratory health. MCC is made possible by the coordinated efforts of goblet and multiciliated cells, two cell types that line the airway epithelium. Maintaining the relative populations of goblet and multiciliated cells is necessary for optimum MCC, however, decreases in the multiciliated cell population and dysfunctional MCC are seen in a variety of respiratory diseases. Despite the clinical relevance, there is still much to understand about the signaling pathways that control multiciliated cell fate. Previous data has shown multiciliated cell differentiation of …

Intercultural Communication Between Forensic And Clinical Psychologists, Brittany Schmeck Nov 2015

Intercultural Communication Between Forensic And Clinical Psychologists, Brittany Schmeck

Graduate School of Professional Psychology: Doctoral Papers and Masters Projects

While working in clinical and forensic psychology settings, a communication difficulty between the two professions became apparent. Forensic psychologists often appeared cold and callous from the clinical psychologist’s perspective, while clinical psychologists often appeared naïve or too client centered from the forensic psychologist’s perspective. I wondered if viewing each subfield of psychology as a culture could facilitate better communication through intercultural communication. Guided by Intercultural Communication in Contexts (Martin & Nakayama, 2010) in approaching intercultural communication between the two professions, I explored factors contributing to each profession’s cultural identities. Once this was established, I attempted to explore the different ways …

The Effect Of Directed Sensory Motor Activity On Attention And Independent Work Skills Of Second Graders, Janene Ruth Johnson Nov 2015

The Effect Of Directed Sensory Motor Activity On Attention And Independent Work Skills Of Second Graders, Janene Ruth Johnson

School of Education and Leadership Student Capstone Theses and Dissertations

The research question asked in this study is, how does consistent sensory motor activity impact student attention and independent work skills? It bases its action on the theory that all higher level learning requires a strong foundation of sensory motor experiences. Two trends are noted. First, our society’s decreasing opportunities for rich sensory motor experiences and second, our legislated push for increased academic demands of students at younger ages. . The resulting increase in inattentive, or sensory seeking, behaviors has become a daily issue for many elementary school teachers. A thorough description of sensory motor development, how the brain processes …
