Lighting Conditions And Optical Filters Effects On Visual Performance Of Speleologists Exposed To Cave Environments, Carla Costa Lança, Nádia Fernandes, Ana Monteiro, Ana Almeida Nov 2015

Lighting Conditions And Optical Filters Effects On Visual Performance Of Speleologists Exposed To Cave Environments, Carla Costa Lança, Nádia Fernandes, Ana Monteiro, Ana Almeida

International Journal of Speleology

The aim of this study is to evaluate lighting conditions and speleologists’ visual performance using optical filters when exposed to the lighting conditions of cave environments. A cross-sectional study was conducted. Twenty-three speleologists were submitted to an evaluation of visual function in a clinical lab. An examination of visual acuity, contrast sensitivity, stereoacuity and flashlight illuminance levels was also performed in 16 of the 23 speleologists at two caves deprived of natural lightning. Two organic filters (450nm and 550nm) were used to compare visual function with and without filters. The mean age of the speleologists was 40.65 (± 10.93) years. …

Influence Of Jail Incarceration And Homelessness Patterns On Engagement In Hiv Care And Hiv Viral Suppression Among New York City Adults Living With Hiv/Aids, Sungwoo Lim, Denis Nash, Laura Hollod, Tiffany G. Harris, Mary Clare Lennon, Lorna E. Thorpe Nov 2015

Influence Of Jail Incarceration And Homelessness Patterns On Engagement In Hiv Care And Hiv Viral Suppression Among New York City Adults Living With Hiv/Aids, Sungwoo Lim, Denis Nash, Laura Hollod, Tiffany G. Harris, Mary Clare Lennon, Lorna E. Thorpe

Publications and Research

Objectives Both homelessness and incarceration are associated with housing instability, which in turn can disrupt continuity of HIV medical care. Yet, their impacts have not been systematically assessed among people living with HIV/AIDS (PLWHA). Methods We studied a retrospective cohort of 1,698 New York City PLWHA with both jail incarceration and homelessness during 2001–05 to evaluate whether frequent transitions between jail incarceration and homelessness were associated with a lower likelihood of continuity of HIV care during a subsequent one-year follow-up period. Using matched jail, single-adult homeless shelter, and HIV registry data, we performed sequence analysis to identify trajectories of these …

Dashing Away Hypertension: Evaluating The Efficacy Of The Dietary Approaches To Stop Hypertension Diet In Controlling High Blood Pressure, Preeya Shah Phd, Kyle D. Maxwell, Joseph I. Shapiro Md Nov 2015

Dashing Away Hypertension: Evaluating The Efficacy Of The Dietary Approaches To Stop Hypertension Diet In Controlling High Blood Pressure, Preeya Shah Phd, Kyle D. Maxwell, Joseph I. Shapiro Md

Biochemistry and Microbiology

The dietary approaches to stop hypertension (DASH) diet has been developed and popularized as a non-pharmaceutical intervention for high blood pressure reduction since 1995. However, to date, a comprehensive description of the biochemical rationale behind the diet’s principal guidelines has yet to be compiled. With rising interest for healthy and reliable life-style modifications to combat cardiovascular disease, this review aims to compile the most recent and relevant studies on this topic and make an informed assessment as to the efficacy of and underlying mechanisms operant in the DASH diet. Specifically, the merits of lowering dietary intake of sodium and saturated …

Cortical Components Of Reaction-Time During Perceptual Decisions In Humans, Jacek P. Dmochowski, Anthony M. Norcia Nov 2015

Cortical Components Of Reaction-Time During Perceptual Decisions In Humans, Jacek P. Dmochowski, Anthony M. Norcia

Publications and Research

The mechanisms of perceptual decision-making are frequently studied through measurements of reaction time (RT). Classical sequential-sampling models (SSMs) of decision-making posit RT as the sum of non-overlapping sensory, evidence accumulation, and motor delays. In contrast, recent empirical evidence hints at a continuous-flow paradigm in which multiple motor plans evolve concurrently with the accumulation of sensory evidence. Here we employ a trial-to-trial reliability-based component analysis of encephalographic data acquired during a random-dot motion task to directly image continuous flow in the human brain. We identify three topographically distinct neural sources whose dynamics exhibit contemporaneous ramping to time-of-response, with the rate and …

Matched, Somewhat-Matched Or Mismatched? Predictors Of Degree-Job Match Among Stem Graduates, Taghreed Ahmed Alhaddab Nov 2015

Matched, Somewhat-Matched Or Mismatched? Predictors Of Degree-Job Match Among Stem Graduates, Taghreed Ahmed Alhaddab

Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)

The current third-generation globalization caused structural, organizational and functional changes in the STEM workforce along with changes in human capital flow. The new globalization shift produced new world order causing the STEM workforce to adopt new frameworks, new skills, and new policy approaches to maintain economic strength and achieve growth and prosperity. Available data indicate that the U.S. secondary and postsecondary education system prepares and produce more than an adequate number of STEM graduates. The perceived crisis in the number of U.S. STEM graduates was not confirmed by any data or policy report. Thus, attention should not be caught simply …
