Exposure to crystalline silica is suggested to increase the risk for a variety of lung diseases, including fibrosis and lung cancer. However, epidemiological evidences for the exposure-risk relationship are ambiguous and conflicting, and experimental study from a reliable animal model to explore the relationship is lacking. We reasoned that a mouse model that is sensitive to both lung injury and tumorigenesis would be appropriate to evaluate the exposure-risk relationship. Previously, we showed that, Gprc5a-/- mice are susceptible to both lung tumorigenesis and endotoxin-induced acute lung injury. In this study, we investigated the biological consequences in Gprc5a-/- mouse model …

Physiological Effects Of Aquatic Hypercarbia On Seawater Acclimation In The White Sturgeon (Acipenser Transmontanus), Ciaran A.S. Shaughnessy
Physiological Effects Of Aquatic Hypercarbia On Seawater Acclimation In The White Sturgeon (Acipenser Transmontanus), Ciaran A.S. Shaughnessy
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Migratory fishes encounter a variety of environmental conditions throughout their life, including changes in salinity, temperature, and dissolved gases. It is important to understand how these fishes are able to acclimate to simultaneous environmental stressors. This thesis examined the physiological interaction of elevated dissolved CO2 (an acid-base disturbance) on osmoregulation during seawater acclimation (an ionoregulatory disturbance) in juvenile white sturgeon (Acipenser transmontanus). Many ion transport mechanisms at the gill involved with acid-base compensation are also required for the regulation of plasma Na+ and Cl+, the predominant extracellular ions. Thus, the interaction between iono- and acid-base regulation has been hypothesized. In …
Effects Of Multiple Species On Motility In Diatom Assemblages, Amanda L. Wolske
Effects Of Multiple Species On Motility In Diatom Assemblages, Amanda L. Wolske
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
Diatoms are unicellular algae that, like other phototrophs, depend on light in order to survive. Many diatoms are known to have regulated motile responses to light, giving them a competitive advantage in their complex community, often containing many other species of algae. In order for similar diatom species to coexist in the same assemblage it is thought that each species will resource partition; a behavioral response that allows closely related species to be successful and cohabitate by using slightly different resources. Many experiments have demonstrated that other organisms exhibit this behavior, although the effect of co-existing diatom species on motility …
Multiwavelength X-Ray Diffraction, Maziar Saleh Ziabari
Multiwavelength X-Ray Diffraction, Maziar Saleh Ziabari
College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations
The central problem of diffraction theory is determining the structure of an object given only the intensity of its diffraction pattern. In general, both the amplitude and phase must be known to uniquely solve a structure; however a coherent radiation source is usually required in order to measure the diffacted phases (e.g. in holography). In many important cases, coherent sources are unavailable and other assumptions or methods must be employed to substitute for the missing phase information. One method that has been successfully applied to the specific problem of determining atomic structure from X-ray diffraction intensity patterns has been the …
Mass Spectrometry-Based Approaches For Targeted Quantitative Proteomics In Biomarker Development, Mary Joan Castillo
Mass Spectrometry-Based Approaches For Targeted Quantitative Proteomics In Biomarker Development, Mary Joan Castillo
Doctoral Dissertations
The development of disease protein biomarkers and their use in clinical research have great applications in the diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment of complex diseases. Mass spectrometry methods for protein biomarker quantitation have recently gained importance in the early stages of the biomarker pipeline, but their application in the validation phase is limited by their low sample throughput. The technology of ultrathroughput mass spectrometry (uMS) transforms the intrinsic quantitation capability of MS analyte multiplexing to sample multiplexing. Herein, the novel MS-based bioanalytical platform utilized decoupled use of isotopic quantitation reference standard and non-isotopic mass coding reagents to enable one-experiment quantitation of …

Middle-Income Latinos In Middle-Class Communities: A Study On Parental Involvement Dynamics, Rafael Inoa
Middle-Income Latinos In Middle-Class Communities: A Study On Parental Involvement Dynamics, Rafael Inoa
Seton Hall University Dissertations and Theses (ETDs)
The academic underperformance of students of Latino backgrounds is a serious cause for concern in the United States, especially considering the significant portion of the total U.S. population that Latinos constitute. Since parental involvement is known as a powerful resource in helping all students succeed academically, it can be used as a way to counter the achievement gap that Latinos are currently facing. However, middle-class Latinos, who are also plagued by this gap in academic achievement, are continuously overlooked throughout the educational literature. The current study lays focus on this group by centering on the perspectives of middle-income Latino parents …

The Precarious Fate Of Homosexual Emojis, Margaret Mary Ochner
The Precarious Fate Of Homosexual Emojis, Margaret Mary Ochner
Cardozo Arts & Entertainment Law Journal (AELJ) Blog
Shigetaka Kurita had a goal in mind when he set out to create the emoji: to invent a quick and simple way to express emotion without words. Emojis are defined as “[a] small digital pictograph used in electronic communication to express a wide range of emotion and ideas” and are based on Japanese characters. In the past several years, emojis have become popular on many platforms, such as Apple and Android phones, as well as social media sites like Twitter and Facebook. Recently, users have embraced Apple’s decision to add new emojis, such as those depicting different races and homosexual …

Shape Recognition: Convexities, Concavities And Things In Between, Gunnar Schmidtmann, Ben J. Jennings, Frederick A.A. Kingdom
Shape Recognition: Convexities, Concavities And Things In Between, Gunnar Schmidtmann, Ben J. Jennings, Frederick A.A. Kingdom
School of Health Professions
Visual objects are effortlessly recognized from their outlines, largely irrespective of viewpoint. Previous studies have drawn different conclusions regarding the importance to shape recognition of specific shape features such as convexities and concavities. However, most studies employed familiar objects, or shapes without curves and did not measure shape recognition across changes in scale and position. We present a novel set of random shapes with well-defined convexities, concavities and inflections (intermediate points), segmented to isolate each feature type. Observers matched the segmented reference shapes to one of two subsequently presented whole-contour shapes (target or distractor) that were re-scaled and re-positioned. For …

Understanding The Impact Of Multicultural Education Using Experiential Learning Techniques To Foster Cultural Competency Of Medical School Students: A Qualitative Case Study At A Medical School, Jonathan Parker Jones
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Cultural competencies of current medical school students were examined by studying part of the multicultural curriculum at a southeastern United States health science center. This study was a qualitative case study that focused on the impact of a multicultural education training exercise, BaFa' BaFa,' on first-year medical students. This exercise took place during orientation of the student's first year. The theoretical framework for this study was part of Kolb's model of experiential learning, specifically the active experimentation aspect. There were two research questions that guided this study: (1) How does BaFa' BaFa' impact cultural competency on current medical students at …
Attentional Bias In Moderate And Heavy College Drinkers: An Eye-Tracking Study, Ansley Victoria Geno
Attentional Bias In Moderate And Heavy College Drinkers: An Eye-Tracking Study, Ansley Victoria Geno
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
Behavioral economic research regarding alcohol use aims to understand how substance use becomes favored over other rewarding non-substance activities (Meshesha, Dennhardt, & Murphy, 2014). The present study investigated attentional bias as an objective index of the relative valuation of substance-related rewards versus substance-free rewards among college students categorized as either heavy or moderate drinkers. The primary goal of this study was to assess the relative valuation of alcohol-related and alcohol-free rewards using multiple behavioral methods, such as attentional bias for alcohol measured via eye-tracking device, subjective ratings of the pleasantness of alcohol-related and alcohol-free stimuli, and measurement of recent activit …
Hierarchy And Exclusion: The Construction And Maintenance Of Order In First-Generation Puritan Massachusetts, 1630-1660, Scott Roth
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
In 1630, a company of English Puritans established Massachusetts Bay Colony and, in doing so, the settlement that offered a foundation for life in Colonial New England. Facing great change, the colony's leadership developed religious, economic, political and social devices to maintain control throughout the transition, thereby establishing a strict order that permeated the lives of all who settled. Those who sought to transcend their place in this order faced discipline in various ways, though the General Court doled out these punishments unevenly. The inconsistency of application of these devices allowed for progress in some areas but restricted growth in …

Implementation And Assessment Of Novel Functional Hemodynamic Mri Measurements In The Brain For Evaluation Of Disease And Treatment, Adam Martin Winchell
Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive
The characterization and quantification of cerebral hemodynamics can provide critical biological information of current physiology. Divergent hemodynamic processes can provide integral knowledge into different pathophysiologies and aid in the diagnosis and evaluation of treatment. A variety of different magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques were implemented to quantify cerebral hemodynamics in a diverse set of neurological conditions. The first study investigated the association of blood flow and blood volume of a diffuse intrinsic pontine glioma tumor by arterial spin labeling (ASL) and dynamic susceptibility weighted contrast MR as a predictive marker of survival. Higher tumor blood flow and maintenance of higher …

Igf-1r Inhibition Induces Schedule-Dependent Sensitization Of Human Melanoma To Temozolomide, R Ramcharan, T Aleksic, Wp Kamdoum, S Gao, Et Al
School of Biomedical Sciences
Prior studies implicate type 1 IGF receptor (IGF-1R) in mediating chemo-resistance. Here, we investigated whether IGF-1R influences response to temozolomide (TMZ), which generates DNA adducts that are removed by O6-methylguanine-DNA methyltransferase (MGMT), or persist causing replication-associated double-strand breaks (DSBs). Initial assessment in 10 melanoma cell lines revealed that TMZ resistance correlated with MGMT expression (r = 0.79, p = 0.009), and in MGMT-proficient cell lines, with phospho-IGF-1R (r = 0.81, p = 0.038), suggesting that TMZ resistance associates with IGF-1R activation. Next, effects of IGF-1R inhibitors (IGF-1Ri) AZ3801 and linsitinib (OSI-906) were tested on TMZ-sensitivity, cell cycle progression and DSB …

Research outputs 2014 to 2021
This study investigated the effects of preventative ankle taping on planned change-of-direction and reactive agility performance and peak ankle muscle activity in basketballers. Twenty male basketballers (age = 22.30 ± 3.97 years; height = 1.84 ± 0.09 meters; body mass = 85.96 ± 11.88 kilograms) with no ankle pathologies attended two testing sessions. Within each session, subjects completed six planned and six reactive randomized trials (three to the left and three to the right for each condition) of the Y-shaped agility test, which was recorded by timing lights. In one session, subjects had both ankles un-taped. In the other, both …

Systematic Analysis Of Hematopoietic Gene Expression Profiles For Prognostic Prediction In Acute Myeloid Leukemia, Frederick S. Varn, Erik H. Andrews, Chao Cheng
Dartmouth Scholarship
Acute myeloid leukemia (AML) is a hematopoietic disorder initiated by the leukemogenic transformation of myeloid cells into leukemia stem cells (LSCs). Preexisting gene expression programs in LSCs can be used to assess their transcriptional similarity to hematopoietic cell types. While this relationship has previously been examined on a small scale, an analysis that systematically investigates this relationship throughout the hematopoietic hierarchy has yet to be implemented. We developed an integrative approach to assess the similarity between AML patient tumor profiles and a collection of 232 murine hematopoietic gene expression profiles compiled by the Immunological Genome Project. The resulting lineage similarity …
