The Birth Of The Federation: Origins Of The Russian Struggle For Democracy, Nikita V. Chirkov Nov 2015

The Birth Of The Federation: Origins Of The Russian Struggle For Democracy, Nikita V. Chirkov

Modern Languages & Literatures Honors Theses

Introduction

Boris Yeltsin and his trusted deputies gathered around the table. A big question was supposed to be decided that day: a question that would fundamentally change the course of a nuclear superpower for decades to come. The anxiety in the room was unbearable: some deputies wiped their sweat with napkins, others silently tapped their feet underneath the table, and the rest hid their eyes in the notebooks full of information that was already well memorized by everyone inside. At last, Boris Yeltsin stood up, took several long sips from the water bottle, placed it firmly on the desk beside …

Novel Mode Of Defective Neural Tube Closure In The Non-Obese Diabetic (Nod) Mouse Strain, J. Michael Salbaum, Claudia Kruger, Jacalyn Macgowan, Nils J. Herion, David Burk, Claudia Kappen Nov 2015

Novel Mode Of Defective Neural Tube Closure In The Non-Obese Diabetic (Nod) Mouse Strain, J. Michael Salbaum, Claudia Kruger, Jacalyn Macgowan, Nils J. Herion, David Burk, Claudia Kappen

Faculty Publications

Failure to close the neural tube results in birth defects, with severity ranging from spina bifida to lethal anencephaly. Few genetic risk factors for neural tube defects are known in humans, highlighting the critical role of environmental risk factors, such as maternal diabetes. Yet, it is not well understood how altered maternal metabolism interferes with embryonic development, and with neurulation in particular. We present evidence from two independent mouse models of diabetic pregnancy that identifies impaired migration of nascent mesodermal cells in the primitive streak as the morphogenetic basis underlying the pathogenesis of neural tube defects. We conclude that perturbed …

A Combination Approach To Treating Fungal Infections, Sanjib K. Shrestha, Marina Y. Fosso, Sylvie Garneau-Tsodikova Nov 2015

A Combination Approach To Treating Fungal Infections, Sanjib K. Shrestha, Marina Y. Fosso, Sylvie Garneau-Tsodikova

Pharmaceutical Sciences Faculty Publications

Azoles are antifungal drugs used to treat fungal infections such as candidiasis in humans. Their extensive use has led to the emergence of drug resistance, complicating antifungal therapy for yeast infections in critically ill patients. Combination therapy has become popular in clinical practice as a potential strategy to fight resistant fungal isolates. Recently, amphiphilic tobramycin analogues, C12 and C14, were shown to display antifungal activities. Herein, the antifungal synergy of C12 and C14 with four azoles, fluconazole (FLC), itraconazole (ITC), posaconazole (POS), and voriconazole (VOR), was examined against seven Candida albicans strains. All tested strains …

Competing For Attention: A Comparative Study Of Social Movements And News Media In Abortion Debates, Katherine Eugene Lebreton Hunt Nov 2015

Competing For Attention: A Comparative Study Of Social Movements And News Media In Abortion Debates, Katherine Eugene Lebreton Hunt

Department of Political Science: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Why do some social movements in abortion debates get more attention from the news media than others? Do movements that support the status quo receive more attention than those opposing the status quo? Through quantitative content analysis of eight major newspapers in South Korea, Ireland, and Canada and fieldwork in South Korea and Ireland, I theorize that antistatus quo groups – whether they are for or against abortion rights – may reopen debate conditions in their countries by strategically using international human rights norms and frames and gaining standing in the news media in environments that tend to be hostile …

Borders Up In Smoke: Marijuana Enforcement In Nebraska After Colorado’S Legalization Of Medicinal Marijuana, Jared M. Ellison, Ryan E. Spohn Nov 2015

Borders Up In Smoke: Marijuana Enforcement In Nebraska After Colorado’S Legalization Of Medicinal Marijuana, Jared M. Ellison, Ryan E. Spohn

Criminology and Criminal Justice Faculty Publications

With the passage of Amendments 20 (2000) and 64 (2012), Colorado legalized the medicinal and recreational use of marijuana. Nebraskan law enforcement in border counties subsequently reported increases in arrests and reductions in jail space. In response, the Nebraska state legislature passed LR-520 to study the potential increased costs incurred by criminal justice agencies in border counties. To investigate this situation, we compare trends in drug arrests and jail occupancy across three areas: border counties, those that contain Interstate 80 (I-80) as a major transportation route, and the remaining counties in the state of Nebraska from 2000 through 2013. We …

Direct And Indirect Effects Of The Caribbean Cymothoid Parasite Anilocra Haemuli On Host Energetics, Behavior, And Trophic Interactions, Rachel Lynn Welicky Nov 2015

Direct And Indirect Effects Of The Caribbean Cymothoid Parasite Anilocra Haemuli On Host Energetics, Behavior, And Trophic Interactions, Rachel Lynn Welicky

Student Theses and Dissertations

The majority of coral reef research focuses on organisms that are familiar to humans, yet 80% of coral reef animals are parasites. Research on the direct effects of parasitism has suggested that hosts may undergo both behavioral and physiological changes. These changes may manifest at the ecosystem level, yet evidence of such changes are scarce. The objectives of this study were to investigate the direct and indirect effects of the Caribbean cymothoid parasite Anilocra haemuli on Haemulon flavolineatum (French grunt) energetics, behavior and trophic interactions. I conducted field surveys to measure A. haemuli prevalence of infection and determine its association …

Soybean Irrigation Initiation Timing Using Evapotranspiration And Soil Moisture Sensor Cues, Justin Chlapecka Nov 2015

Soybean Irrigation Initiation Timing Using Evapotranspiration And Soil Moisture Sensor Cues, Justin Chlapecka

Student Theses and Dissertations

Expanded use of irrigation management tools is needed to improve water use efficiency in eastern Arkansas soybean (Glycine max) production. Irrigation initiation timing was studied on a furrow irrigated, sandy loam commercial field in Mississippi County. A major objective was to develop, validate, and expand use of irrigation timing cues, incorporating local weather station data, atmometers, and soil moisture measurements. Four timing treatments were evaluated: early, recommended, late, and rainfed, and the crop and pest response to each. With above average rainfall in 2014 and 2015, results showed little variation of soybean yield. Yield monitor data indicated penalties only within …

Quality Of Life In Adolescents With Cancer, Alexis Guastella Nov 2015

Quality Of Life In Adolescents With Cancer, Alexis Guastella

Honors Theses

There is no current universally accepted definition for quality of life (QOL). One source defined the concept of QOL as how an individual measures the goodness of different aspects of their life. These assessments include one’s emotional reactions to life events, disposition, sense of fulfillment, and satisfaction with personal relationships and work (Theofilou, 2013). Another definition encompasses the person’s level of functioning and overall satisfaction and well-being of their life (Lavdaniti & Tsitsis, 2015). QOL can be influenced by many factors, including physical health and certain disease processes. One disease in particular that can significantly affect one’s QOL is cancer. …
