When Traumatic Stressors Are Not Past, But Now: Psychosocial Treatment To Develop Resilience With Children And Youth Enduring Concurrent, Complex Trauma, Katherine Tyson Mccrea Professor, Deanna Guthrie, Jeffrey Bulanda

Social Work: School of Social Work Faculty Publications and Other Works

The article discusses a project called the Empowering Counseling Program (ECP) conducted in community schools using participatory action and consumer evaluation designs. It addressed the elements of treatment theories used by mental health providers such as values, assumptions and concepts. It cites findings that clients suffering from complex trauma in under-resourced communities, unavoidably traumatized concurrently with treatment do not benefit from treatment guidelines.

Should I Say Something? Dating And Sexual Aggression Bystander Intervention Among High School Youth, Katie Edwards, Robert P. Eckstein, Kara Anne Rodenhizer-Stampfli

Carsey Publications

Using data from a sample of 218 high school youth from three high schools in New England (one rural, two urban), this brief discusses dating and sexual aggression bystander intervention among high school youth. Authors Katie Edwards, Robert Eckstein, and Kara Anne Rodenhizer-Stämpfli report that an overwhelming majority (93.6 percent) of high school students reported having the opportunity to intervene during the past year in situations of dating aggression or sexual aggression; however, in over one-third of the episodes (37.4 percent) students reported not intervening. Girls were more likely to intervene in situations of dating and sexual aggression than boys, …

The Concept Of Mattering As Critical To Nursing-Student Recovery, Ronald Steven Hutchins Nov 2015

The Concept Of Mattering As Critical To Nursing-Student Recovery, Ronald Steven Hutchins

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

This qualitative study using a phenomenological case study and grounded-theory design was conducted to examine the phenomena of nursing-student recovery following a failure in a clinical nursing course. For the purpose of this study nursing-student recovery was defined as: The academic progression of a student who failed a core clinical nursing course, and subsequently successfully completed the course, the nursing program, and passed the NCLEX-RN exam. A literature review was conducted focusing on student academic recovery, and three conceptual theories that support transitional change, growth and stability: Neuman System Model (NSM), Self Determination Theory (SDT), and Schlossberg's Transitional Theory (STT). …

Azithromycin Drives Alternative Macrophage Activation And Improves Recovery And Tissue Sparing In Contusion Spinal Cord Injury, Bei Zhang, William M. Bailey, Timothy J. Kopper, Michael B. Orr, David J. Feola, John C. Gensel Nov 2015

Azithromycin Drives Alternative Macrophage Activation And Improves Recovery And Tissue Sparing In Contusion Spinal Cord Injury, Bei Zhang, William M. Bailey, Timothy J. Kopper, Michael B. Orr, David J. Feola, John C. Gensel

Spinal Cord and Brain Injury Research Center Faculty Publications

BACKGROUND: Macrophages persist indefinitely at sites of spinal cord injury (SCI) and contribute to both pathological and reparative processes. While the alternative, anti-inflammatory (M2) phenotype is believed to promote cell protection, regeneration, and plasticity, pro-inflammatory (M1) macrophages persist after SCI and contribute to protracted cell and tissue loss. Thus, identifying non-invasive, clinically viable, pharmacological therapies for altering macrophage phenotype is a challenging, yet promising, approach for treating SCI. Azithromycin (AZM), a commonly used macrolide antibiotic, drives anti-inflammatory macrophage activation in rodent models of inflammation and in humans with cystic fibrosis.

METHODS: We hypothesized that AZM treatment can alter …

Stream Daylighting Restoration As Green Infrastructure: A Visual Preference Survey For The Future Revitalization Of Dallas' Mill Creek, Ryan Matthew Brown Nov 2015

Stream Daylighting Restoration As Green Infrastructure: A Visual Preference Survey For The Future Revitalization Of Dallas' Mill Creek, Ryan Matthew Brown

Landscape Architecture Masters & Design Theses - Archive

The purpose of this research is to study the visual design elements of stream daylighting through a visual preference survey and apply them to a site along the Mill Creek flowline in Dallas, Texas. This research begins with a study on identifying a specific site location within the Mill Creek watershed. From that study, a visual preference survey determined which visual design elements of stream daylighting were found to be the most desirable. The most desirable visual design elements were then used to digitally depict a suggested stream daylighting outcome through the use of before and after images of the …

Forced Migration, The Human Face Of A Health Crisis, Lawrence O. Gostin, Anna E. Roberts Nov 2015

Forced Migration, The Human Face Of A Health Crisis, Lawrence O. Gostin, Anna E. Roberts

Georgetown Law Faculty Publications and Other Works

Nearly 60 million refugees, asylum-seekers and internally displaced persons (IDPs) fled their homes in 2014, predominately from war-torn Syria, Afghanistan and Somalia. The global response to assisting this vulnerable group has been wholly incommensurate with the need given the profound health hazards faced by forced migrants at each stage of their journey. The majority of forced migrants are housed in lower-income countries that do not have the infrastructure to assist the significant numbers of individuals who are crossing their borders and the humanitarian organizations who seek to assist in the response are grossly underfunded and under-resourced.

Countries have varying responsibilities …

Genetic And Morphological Diversity Along Altitudinal Gradients In The Genus Rhoadsia (Teleostei: Characidae: Rhoadsiinae), Grace Malato Nov 2015

Genetic And Morphological Diversity Along Altitudinal Gradients In The Genus Rhoadsia (Teleostei: Characidae: Rhoadsiinae), Grace Malato

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

The Neotropics have the highest fish species diversity of any area in the world, with some experts estimating that as many as 4000 species of fishes are present in freshwater ecosystems. Elevational gradients are partially responsible for this diversity due to the rapidly changing ecological conditions associated with changes in altitude in rivers. One area where elevational gradients are particularly important is Western Ecuador; this region forms part of a biodiversity hotspot extending south from Panama along the western side of the Andes. Fish species diversity is relatively low because of the small size of most of the river drainages …

Enormous, Rapidly Growing Breast Mass., Vivek Verma, Sanjay Muttineni, Rajesh R. Kulkarni, Edibaldo Silva, William W. West, Robert B. Thompson

Journal Articles: Oncology and Hematology

BACKGROUND: Signs and symptoms of a rapidly enlarging breast mass are not only important for all clinicians to recognize and assess, but also are not uncommon occurrences. We describe a similar but unique case that developed into an enormous, 36 cm exophytic mass.

CASE PRESENTATION: A 51-year-old woman with history of psychiatric conditions presented for signs and symptoms of sepsis. It was determined that the source was an enormous 36 cm mass originating from the breast/chest wall. After stabilizing the patient with antibiotics, she underwent successful resection. Surgical margins were positive, and histopathology demonstrated bland spindle cells with stromal overgrowth. …

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: A New Method For The Treatment Of Aortic Valve Disease, Erin E. Sluyter Nov 2015

Transcatheter Aortic Valve Replacement: A New Method For The Treatment Of Aortic Valve Disease, Erin E. Sluyter

University Honors College

As heart complications increase among the elderly population, transcatheter aortic valve replacement is a new procedure that can treat many aortic stenosis and congestive heart failure patients. Transcatheter aortic valve replacement is a common medical procedure across Europe; this investigates the possibility of the procedure’s adoption as common practice in the United States. Several factors have been identified as key components for adapting to this procedure. Medical institutions must update their catheterization labs and operating rooms as well as train all surgical staff members on the transcatheter valve technology and standard procedures. Intensive care unit and surgical recovery staff must …

Synthesis And Application Of Silica Based Mesoporous Materials For Removal Of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds In Aqueous Solution / Shanmuga Suntharam Kittappa, Kittappa Shanmuga Suntharam Nov 2015

Synthesis And Application Of Silica Based Mesoporous Materials For Removal Of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds In Aqueous Solution / Shanmuga Suntharam Kittappa, Kittappa Shanmuga Suntharam

Student Works (2010-2019)

The economical synthesis route of silica based mesoporous materials using eco-friendly and cheaper chemicals and material was studied. Three mesoporous silica-based materials were successfully synthesized and applied for the removal of endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs): mesoporous silica materials (MSMs) synthesized by reacting pore templating agent Pluronic P123® with silica (SiO2) powder instead of organometallic precursors [i.e. tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS)]; magnetised nanocomposite silica material (MNCM) synthesized by incorporating MSMs with nano magnetite; and N1-(3-Trimethoxysilylpropyl) diethylenetriamine (Tris) coated magnetised nanocomposite silica materials (MNCMT) synthesized by incorporating MNCM with Tris. The synthesized materials were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Brunauer–Emmett–Teller (BET)/Barrett-Joyner-Halenda (BJH) surface …

Prospective Predictors Of Adolescent Bmi: Parenting Style, Gender, And Weight Perception, Trey V. Dellucci Nov 2015

Prospective Predictors Of Adolescent Bmi: Parenting Style, Gender, And Weight Perception, Trey V. Dellucci

College of Science and Health Theses and Dissertations

Obesity affects both adolescents and adults worldwide (Popkin & Doak, 1998). Determining which factors contribute to risk factors to the high prevalence of obesity in America is important because excess weight can negatively affect both physical health and psychosocial functioning (Kolotkin, Meter, & Williams, 2001). Few longitudinal studies have assessed the association between parenting styles and adolescent’s body mass index (BMI; Rhee et al, 2006). Past research has shown that parents greatly influence adolescent’s body image (Al Sabbah et al., 2009). Using data from the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health, the current study examined the influence of parenting styles …
