Effects Of The Developmental Environment On Oxidative Damage And Antioxidants In Red-Eared Slider Turtle ( Trachemys Scripta Elegans ) Hatchlings, Lisa Allison Treidel May 2015

Effects Of The Developmental Environment On Oxidative Damage And Antioxidants In Red-Eared Slider Turtle ( Trachemys Scripta Elegans ) Hatchlings, Lisa Allison Treidel

Theses and Dissertations

Developmental environments influence many individual phenotypes. However, currently we have a limited understanding of how the developmental environment influences oxidative stress resistance phenotypes. Oxidative stress is defined as a physiological state during which the production of harmful free radicals exceeds the protective capabilities of antioxidants. Variations among adults in susceptibility to oxidative stress can have important consequences for life history strategies and fitness related traits. Our work was aimed at providing insight in to the role that the developmental environment plays on oxidative stress phenotypes in the model oviparous reptile the red-eared slider turtle (Trachemys scripta elegans). Here, we conducted …

Understanding Social Responsibility Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior: The Connecticut Gatekeeper Program, Dwight L. Norwood May 2015

Understanding Social Responsibility Using The Theory Of Planned Behavior: The Connecticut Gatekeeper Program, Dwight L. Norwood

Doctoral Dissertations

The public is often encouraged to engage in socially responsible behaviors for the good of society, sometimes on behalf of those most vulnerable; older adults are one such rapidly growing vulnerable population. Nationally policies trend toward helping older adults remain at home rather than entering skilled nursing facilities when they encounter difficulty looking after themselves due to failing health. Although community supports are available, many are unlikely to access them, due to the very nature of their problems, such as depression and dementia. Across the U.S., gatekeeper programs encourage community members to make referrals to social service agencies which can …

The Contemporary Use Of Nurse Practitioners In U.S. Emergency Departments, Jeffrey L. Bevan May 2015

The Contemporary Use Of Nurse Practitioners In U.S. Emergency Departments, Jeffrey L. Bevan

Doctor of Nursing Practice Scholarly Projects

Problem: The increased demand for emergency care in the United States (U.S.) has been well-documented and there is growing utilization of nurse practitioners in U.S. emergency departments. However, little is known about the nurse practitioner (NP) role in the emergency department setting within the past five years.

Purpose: The purpose of this project was to describe the demographic characteristics of patients, patient conditions treated, diagnostic tests ordered, and procedures performed by nurse practitioners in a national sample of U.S. emergency departments.

Methodology: This secondary analysis used a non-experimental quantitative, descriptive exploratory design to review data from the National Hospital Ambulatory …

Fall Prevention Among Older Adults Living In The Community, Clarissa Silva Lopez May 2015

Fall Prevention Among Older Adults Living In The Community, Clarissa Silva Lopez

Theses & Dissertations

Older adults are within the fastest population growth rate in the United States, and as the population ages, the potential for falls increases (DHHS, 2011). This was a mixed-method explanatory study that investigated the perceptions of older adults regarding the usefulness, adequacy, and positive experience of fall information among older adults living in the community when received from healthcare professionals during physician’s office visits. The research questions were: 1. What is the relationship among perceptions of usefulness, adequacy, and positive experience of fall information among older adults? 2. Is there a difference in the perceptions of usefulness and adequacy among …

Dose Response Relationship Between Aquatic Treadmill Running And Change To Si In Land Treadmill Running, Luke Campbell Roberts May 2015

Dose Response Relationship Between Aquatic Treadmill Running And Change To Si In Land Treadmill Running, Luke Campbell Roberts

All Graduate Plan B and other Reports, Spring 1920 to Spring 2023

Aquatic therapies have been used in some of the earliest human civilizations. Examples can be seen in China, ancient Rome and even in the early history of U.S. settlements.1,2 Over the past few years aquatic environments have become a more common method for rehabilitation, injury prevention, and cross training. Additionally, research has observed that aquatic exercise may assist in pain relief, swelling reduction, and ease of movement due to the pressure and warmth of water.7 Aquatic environments can also be used to reduce forces placed on the lower extremities by reducing the weight of the subject through buoyancy. …

Hearing Sensitivity And The Effect Of Sound Exposure On The Axolotl (Ambystoma Mexicanum), Amy K. Fehrenbach May 2015

Hearing Sensitivity And The Effect Of Sound Exposure On The Axolotl (Ambystoma Mexicanum), Amy K. Fehrenbach

Masters Theses & Specialist Projects

The axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum) has been used as a model organism for studying development, genetics, and regeneration. Although the sensory hair cells of the lateral line of this species have been shown to be able to regenerate, it is not known whether this also occurs in the inner ear. In fact, little is known about the hearing capabilities of the axolotl or other salamander species. I recorded auditory evoked potentials (AEPs) of six axolotls at eleven frequencies (0.1, 0.25, 0.4, 0.6, 0.8, 1, 1.5, 2, 3, 4, and 6 kHz) in order to produce baseline audiograms of underwater pressure sensitivity. …

‘Population aging’ is a growing concern for most of us living in the twenty first century, primarily because many of us in the next few years will have a senior person to care for - spending money towards their healthcare expenditures AND/OR having to balance a full-time job with the responsibility of care-giving, travelling from another city to be with this elderly citizen who might be our parent, grand-parent or even community elders. As informal care-givers, if somehow we were able to monitor the day-to-day activities of our elderly dependents, and be alerted when wrong happens to them that would …

Impact Of Implementing The Geriatric Resource Nurse Model On Fall And Hospital Acquired Pressure Ulcer Rates, And Length Of Stay In Older Adults In An Acute Care Hospital, Elzbieta Kmiecik, Cathie E. Guzzetta, Mary-Michael Brown, Qiuping Pearl Zhou, Desale Sameer

GW Research Days 2015

Background.Older adults are at high risk for adverse care outcomes, such as injuries from falls, hospital acquired pressure ulcers (HAPUs), and prolonged length of stay (LOS). Available evidence suggests outcomes may improve when older adults are cared for by healthcare providers with competence in geriatrics. To improve outcomes, an acute care not-for-profit teaching hospital in Washington DC area implemented a Geriatric Resource Nurse (GRN) model that prepares registered nurses (RNs) as clinical experts on core geriatric principles on four general care wards (three medical-surgical and one cardiac).

Objectives. Toexamine the effects of GRN model implementation on fall and …

An Examination Into The Relationship Between Self-Compassion And Parenting Styles, Jesi L. Hall May 2015

An Examination Into The Relationship Between Self-Compassion And Parenting Styles, Jesi L. Hall

Undergraduate Honors Theses

High self-compassion has been shown to provide many benefits for overall well-being. Some studies have suggested that the environment in which an individual grew up could have some effect on this trait in adulthood. The present research examined the relationship between the parenting style with which an individual was raised and their later adulthood self-compassion and compassion for others. It was hypothesized that the responsiveness of the parent would be directly related to the way that an individual learns to respond to themselves and others. Authoritative parenting style was expected to be related to higher self-compassion and compassion for others …

Examining The Relationship Between Physical Activity Psychological Well-Being And Stress In A College Population, Hannah K. Wike May 2015

Examining The Relationship Between Physical Activity Psychological Well-Being And Stress In A College Population, Hannah K. Wike

Masters Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

The present study evaluated the relationship between perceived stress and psychological well-being moderated by physical activity in college-age participants. Previous research suggests physical activity relates to lower stress levels (Nguyen‐Michel, Unger, Hamilton, & Spruijt‐Metz, 2006). Additionally, research has found physical activity is connected with overall well-being and lower levels of mental health issues. The results from an online survey collection (n=291) suggest that physical activity, at least as operationalized in the study, does not moderate the relationship between perceived stress and psychological well-being. However, perceived stress does have a significant relationship with psychological well-being. Also, the motive for physical activity, …

Effects Of Intergroup Anxiety, And Outgroup Tolerance And Trust On Intergroup Contact Quality Among Emerging Adults And Adults In Bosnia And Herzegovina., Carli J. Mosby May 2015

Effects Of Intergroup Anxiety, And Outgroup Tolerance And Trust On Intergroup Contact Quality Among Emerging Adults And Adults In Bosnia And Herzegovina., Carli J. Mosby

College of Arts & Sciences Senior Theses

Intergroup contact theory (Allport, 1954) holds that positive effects can occur when two or more groups come into contact with one another under specific circumstances. The quality of the contact has been shown to be a better predictor than contact quantity in producing positive results (Schwartz and Simmons, 2001; Viki, Culmer, Eller, & Abrams, 2006). The current study attempted to determine whether Allport's intergroup contact theory could be applied to intergroup anxiety, outgroup tolerance, and outgroup trust; more specifically, whether these three variables would have an effect on intergroup contact quality among the people of Bosnia and Herzegovina and whether …

Reporting Practices, Knowledge And Opinion Of Policy Regarding Drivers With Dementia Among Arkansas Neurologists And Geriatricians, Erika Martin Gergerich

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Background: States have various policies regarding a physician's ability or responsibility to report at-risk drivers with dementia to the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). Some states have mandatory reporting policies, others have optional reporting policies and some have no policy regarding this issue. Arkansas has no reporting policy regarding drivers with dementia to the DMV. Therefore, physicians in Arkansas face the risk of liability if they report a patient against their will to the DMV in good faith. Neurologists and geriatricians are often in a position to diagnose and treat individuals with dementia. Research Questions: The following three research questions …

The Effect Of Balance-Based Torso-Weighting On Mobility, Gait, Balance, Postural Control, And Falls Efficacy In Mobility Limited Older Adults, Jennifer L. Vincenzo May 2015

The Effect Of Balance-Based Torso-Weighting On Mobility, Gait, Balance, Postural Control, And Falls Efficacy In Mobility Limited Older Adults, Jennifer L. Vincenzo

Graduate Theses and Dissertations

Exercise is a known intervention to prevent fall risk among older adults; however, adherence is poor. Therefore, it is of interest to determine if other interventions improve function and decrease fall risk among older adults. Balance-Based Torso-Weighting (BBTW) is a non-exercise intervention that improves functional measures among adults with multiple sclerosis, yet the effectiveness of BBTW has not been assessed among older adults without progressive neurological disorders. We conducted a double-blind, randomized study to analyze the effect of BBTW on functional measures and falls efficacy among community-dwelling, mobility limited older adults after 5 days of wearing BalanceWear® for 4 hours …

Depression: An Investigation Of The Risk Factors Associated With High Depressive Symptoms Among The Latino Immigrant Population, Elizabeth Altamirano

HIM 1990-2015

Depression seems to affect a large portion of Americans living the U.S. Specifically, it has been found to affect the Latino population more so than other ethnicities. When considering Latino immigrants, it is important to take into consideration the additional challenges (e.g. adaptation, acculturation) that may lead to the development of depression. In the current study, the aim is to find a relationship between depression and other psychological constructs (e.g. dominant group and intragroup marginalization, acculturative stress) in order to determine high risk factors for depressive symptoms among Latino immigrants in the Florida community. 128 Latino immigrants (44 males, 81 …
