Bone tissue has a significant potential for healing, which involves a significant the interplay between bone and immune cells. While fracture healing represents a useful model to investigate endochondral bone healing, intramembranous bone healing models are yet to be developed and characterized. In this study, a micro-computed tomography, histomorphometric and molecular (RealTimePCRarray) characterization of post tooth-extraction alveolar bone healing was performed on C57Bl/6 WT mice. After the initial clot dominance (0 h), the development of a provisional immature granulation tissue is evident (7 d), characterized by marked cell proliferation, angiogenesis and inflammatory cells infiltration; associated with peaks of growth factors …

One Plus One More Than Two : University-Community Partnerships For Elderly : An Interdisciplinary Service-Learning Project, Chia Hui Chiu, Fang, Megan Liu
Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Service-Learning 亞太地區服務研習會議
Faculties at Taipei Medical University developed an interdisciplinary courses cluster which consists of Chinese History, Nutrition, Elderly Activity Design, and Physical Examination. In this course cluster, faculties, students, teaching assistant, and NPO/community members serve the same elderly over two years by providing health related care in accordance with the courses objectives. In this project, not only students' soft abilities, such as problem-solving skills, team work abilities, and communication abilities, are improved, but also develop some pilot devices for the elderly, such as remote health examination and instant soft meal. The paper will describe this model of interdisciplinary service-learning in health …

Communication Faculty Publications
In a series of in-depth interviews, ten older adults described their use and experience with mobile technologies (e.g., E-readers and tablets). The results reveal that while older adults may not be leaders in new technology adoption, they do utilize mobile technology when they find it useful. The participants expressed both satisfaction and some frustration with their mobile devices. Participants suggested that the devices allowed them to partake in behaviors they might not be able to otherwise enjoy for a variety of physical and social reasons.
Social Media As Support For Partners Of Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Susan L. Ruiz, Lee Stadtlander
Social Media As Support For Partners Of Veterans With Posttraumatic Stress Disorder, Susan L. Ruiz, Lee Stadtlander
Journal of Social, Behavioral, and Health Sciences
Researchers have established that partners of veterans who isolate socially because of posttraumatic stress disorder are also socially impacted. It is not known how partners cope with their own social isolation and the influence of social media on the isolation while maintaining commitment to their veteran partners. Weiss’ theory of the syndrome of loneliness was used as the basis for this phenomenological study investigating social experiences in 10 female participants drawn from social media groups. Although the study was open to male or female partners, only female partners of male veterans chose to participate. Qualitative email interviews established how the …

More than one third of adults ages 65 years old and older fall each year in the United States. This can result in trauma, hospital admissions, and potential death. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of waist-pull perturbation training on balance in the elderly. There were two experimental groups, elderly non-fallers (n=9) and elderly fallers (n=5) between ages 65-86, and a control group comprised of young, healthy subjects (n=10) ages 21-31. All subjects underwent baseline and post-training measurements using EMG recordings of the tibialis anterior, gastrocnemius, vastus lateralis and semimembranosus. Training was performing using repeated waist-pull …

Migration Signatures Across The Decades: Net Migration By Age In U.S. Counties, 1950−2010, Kenneth M. Johnson, Richelle Winkler
Sociology
Background: Migration is the primary population redistribution process in the United States. Selective migration by age, race/ethnic group, and spatial location governs population integration, affects community and economic development, contributes to land use change, and structures service needs.
Objective: Delineate historical net migration patterns by age, race/ethnic, and rural-urban dimensions for United States counties.
Methods: Net migration rates by age for all US counties are aggregated from 1950−2010, summarized by rural-urban location and compared to explore differential race/ethnic patterns of age-specific net migration over time.
Results: We identify distinct age-specific net migration ‘signatures’ that are consistent …

Impacting Patient Care Experiences with Hourly Rounding
My global aim consists of cultivating communication and staff responsiveness within a busy, nursing unit in an urban setting within a San Francisco hospital; thereby improving the patient’s perception of staff responsiveness by reducing call lights and patient falls by 25% within three months. The patient population consists of cardiovascular and thoracic post-operative surgical patients of all ages primarily adults. The implementation of the evidence based practice of hourly rounding has been proven to increase overall patient satisfaction by improving staff responsiveness and increasing patient safety within many hospitals. The measurement of effectiveness …
Challenges, Experiences, And Future Directions Of Senior Centers Serving The Portland Metropolitan Area, Melissa Lynn Cannon
Challenges, Experiences, And Future Directions Of Senior Centers Serving The Portland Metropolitan Area, Melissa Lynn Cannon
Dissertations and Theses
A growing body of research emphasizes the development of an understanding of the relationship between older adults and their physical and social environments (Wahl & Weisman, 2003). Researchers, planners, policymakers, and community residents have been increasingly interested in shaping urban environments as places that foster active aging and independence among older adults. Senior centers have served a critical role in their communities as focal points for older adults, as individuals or in groups, to participate in services and activities that support their independence and encourage their involvement in and with the community (NCOA, 1979). The aging of the population and …
Dementia In The Context Of Disability, Rosanne Dizazzo-Miller, Fredrick D. Pociask
Dementia In The Context Of Disability, Rosanne Dizazzo-Miller, Fredrick D. Pociask
Department of Health Care Sciences
Patients and caregivers often associate dementia with devastation and a loss of productive contribution to society. People with dementia are often depicted as confused individuals struggling through embarrassing episodes, followed by a loss of independence. The burden and devastation of the diagnosis on the families of people with dementia is exacerbated by their assumption of the role of caregiver with inadequate preparation or training. Disability scholars, in contrast, offer physical and occupational therapists a nontragic view of disability that recognizes the importance of countering the stigma and discrimination that too often accompany dementia. This case example of a woman diagnosed …
The Impact Of Communication Impairments On The Social Relationships Of Older Adults, Andrew Demetrius Palmer
The Impact Of Communication Impairments On The Social Relationships Of Older Adults, Andrew Demetrius Palmer
Dissertations and Theses
Communication forms the foundation of social interaction. For older adults, however, there is known to be an increased risk of developing conditions that interfere with the ability to communicate. These conditions may occur for a variety of reasons, including age-related changes in physical or sensory functioning, injury, and disease. It is estimated that 55% of all Medicare beneficiaries have a communication impairment of some kind. Social contact is known to be vital for older adults' mental and physical health but, because communication impairments often co-occur with other types of disability, it is difficult to generalize about the relative impact of …

A 433 MHz antenna is proposed for integration with the insole of footwear for a body area network. The folded dipole design with an asymmetric groundplane radiates from its edges and considers the close proximity of the human foot and ground surfaces. It functions for different ground conductivity conditions and an on-body communication link with an Inverted F Antenna in the upper body area was evaluated on a static and dynamic human subject. The antenna solution was compliant with Specific Absorption Rate requirements, remains matched and links with upper-body nodes regardless of the body posture and node location.

Human Movement Variability And Aging, Nicholas Stergiou, Jenny A. Kent, Denise Mcgrath
Human Movement Variability And Aging, Nicholas Stergiou, Jenny A. Kent, Denise Mcgrath
Journal Articles
An optimal level of variability enables us to interact adaptively and safely to a continuously changing environment, where often our movements must be adjusted in a matter of milliseconds. A large body of research exists that demonstrates natural variability in healthy gait (along with variability in other, healthy biological signals such as heart rate) and a loss of this variability in aging and injury, as well as in a variety of neurodegenerative and physiological disorders. We submit that this field of research is now in pressing need of an innovative “next step” that goes beyond the many descriptive studies that …

Nurses' Self-Efficacy For Managing Elder Abuse, Alana Anderson
Nurses' Self-Efficacy For Managing Elder Abuse, Alana Anderson
Nursing Theses and Dissertations
Elder abuse is a serious issue that negatively affects physical and mental health in a significant portion of the older population. Abuse of older adults is not adequately detected or reported. Nurses have frequent contact with older victims of abuse, providing them the opportunity to play a significant role in detecting, reporting, and intervening in such cases. Nurses are reluctant to intervene due to lack of education on elder abuse and lack of self-efficacy in their ability to properly manage elder abuse. This quantitative, descriptive study was designed to determine whether educational content on elder abuse, perceived capability, and self-efficacy …
Specialty Selection In The Face Of An Aging Demographic In Taiwan, Ian Christensen, Michael Barnes
Specialty Selection In The Face Of An Aging Demographic In Taiwan, Ian Christensen, Michael Barnes
Journal of Undergraduate Research
As of the end of August, 2013, senior citizens accounted for 11 percent of Taiwan’s population1. According to a report published by Taiwan’s Ministry of the Interior earlier this year, Taiwan’s population is predicted to be “hyper-aged”,with 20% of the population 65 or over, by 2025. With the world’s lowest birth rate (less than 0.9 children per woman)2 and a universal health care system, the aging of Taiwan’s population constitutes a massive challenge for the Taiwan health care system. Such a challenge is not, however, unique to Taiwan. Many populations, especially in developed nations such as those …
Helicopter Parenting And Parent-Child Attachment, Kaitlin S. Fitzgerald
Helicopter Parenting And Parent-Child Attachment, Kaitlin S. Fitzgerald
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Helicopter parenting is the colloquial term that refers to a unique patterning of parenting dimensions that result in a style both high in behavioral control and levels of warmth and support, and low in autonomy-granting (Padilla-Walker & Nelson, 2012). Parental attachment–distinct from helicopter parenting–typically involves the initial relationship between parent and child which affects the child’s overall life satisfaction and well-being (mainly in areas associated with relationships, motivation, and health-related behaviors). Despite what areas may overlap between parent-child attachment and helicopter parenting, little research has been done on the relation among these variables. The current study examined the associations among …
The First Year: The Relationship Between Loneliness & Wellness Among College Freshmen, Isabel M. Jimenez-Bush
The First Year: The Relationship Between Loneliness & Wellness Among College Freshmen, Isabel M. Jimenez-Bush
Senior Honors Projects, 2010-2019
Loneliness is common in the majority of first-semester college students, but if left unaddressed, long-term loneliness may cause physical health problems. The purpose of this study was to investigate the relationship between perceived loneliness and physical health among college freshmen at James Madison University using a Qualtrics survey. The relationship between loneliness and health was assessed using the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance Survey (BRFSS) to gauge physical health and the UCLA Loneliness Survey (UCLA-LS) to gauge perceived loneliness. Contrary to the hypothesis, results indicated there was no relationship between loneliness and physical health. It was thought the BRFSS was a …

When you leave a job where you have participated in a 401(k) plan, you may have a number of different options about what to do with the money in that account. This fact sheet explains those options and offers guidance about the pros and cons of each option.
Here are some frequently asked questions answered in this face sheet:
Q. Can I leave my money in my former employer’s plan?
Q. What are my other options?
Q. If I decide to withdraw the account balance from my former employer’s plan, how do I do that, and how long should it …
