Abject Futures: The (Re)Negotiation Of Nafta And The Canadian Power Elite, Dean Ray Jan 2026

Abject Futures: The (Re)Negotiation Of Nafta And The Canadian Power Elite, Dean Ray

Fast Capitalism

This paper draws upon the critical political economy tradition in Canada to examine the renegotiation of NAFTA and the class interests at work in the final agreement. It draws on a range of ethnographic and media sources in its argumentation. The paper provides a comprehensive review of Canadian Political Economy before it turns to the negotiation and the actions of Foreign Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland. It is argued that Freeland was adept at appearance management and manipulating media presentations of herself to make the negotiation seem more laboured then it was. In the end, the agreement protected Canada's crown jewel, …

Land Use And Sovereignty Along The Catawba River, Thomas C. Brugh, Lucile C. Rencher Jan 2026

Land Use And Sovereignty Along The Catawba River, Thomas C. Brugh, Lucile C. Rencher

Student Scholarship

This document-based case study explains how land-use change along the Catawba River Corridor (Lancaster and York Counties, South Carolina) has been produced through the interaction of property rights (dominium) and rule-setting authority (imperium), showing why sovereignty continues to shape development even after land disputes appear “settled.” Through analyzing legal records (Treaty of Nation Ford, the 1959 Catawba Division of Assets Act, the 1986 Supreme Court timing decision, and the 1993 Settlement Act), planning documents, parcel records, and field observations, we trace how shifting jurisdiction and title certainty structured what kinds of land uses were possible and when. We argue that …

Surviving Staten Island: Black Women’S Narratives Of Resilience, Motherwork, And Embodied Trauma, Jazmin Rivera Jan 2026

Surviving Staten Island: Black Women’S Narratives Of Resilience, Motherwork, And Embodied Trauma, Jazmin Rivera

Student Theses

This oral history dissertation centers the experiences of six Black women who had formative experiences navigating hostile school and community-based settings on Staten Island during the 1970s, 1980s, and early 1990s. Guided by a conceptual framework that draws on Black orality, Black feminist thought, and endarkened feminist epistemology, this study demonstrates how Black women were required to cross geographic and social boundaries to survive hostile conditions in Staten Island communities and schools. Findings from this study highlight Black women’s use of community cultural wealth to inform their survival strategies and resilience. At the same time, their experiences indicate the potential …

Atlanta '96: The Games And The South, Beau Bowden Jan 2026

Atlanta '96: The Games And The South, Beau Bowden

ETDs from 2020-2029

The Centennial Olympiad, hosted by Atlanta, Georgia, in 1996, demonstrated key principles of the postsouthern mindset, a movement typically associated with literary criticism that, if applied to historiographic methods, offers valuable insights into how Atlantans confronted competing identities of being a modern international city hailed as the Black Mecca, and a city forever linked to the Lost Cause, Ku Klux Klan, and racial inequality. During the Opening Ceremonies, specifically, Olympic organizers curated a celebration touting the city’s and region’s multiculturalism and corporate might, as described by the Atlanta Committee for the Olympics (ACOG), the body responsible for organizing the games, …

The Influence Of The Mental Health Parity And Addiction Equity Act On Residential Behavioral Healthcare Facility Availability In The United States: A State-Level Analysis, Amanda Mellowspring Jan 2026

The Influence Of The Mental Health Parity And Addiction Equity Act On Residential Behavioral Healthcare Facility Availability In The United States: A State-Level Analysis, Amanda Mellowspring

ETDs from 2020-2029

The need for accessible, quality behavioral healthcare (BH) has increased dramatically over recent decades. The availability of BH services for patients has long been complicated by high cost, lack of insurance coverage, and location accessibility. BH organizations face ongoing challenges to meet the demand for services including costs of operation, worker shortages, and navigating the payer landscape. The history of BH in the U.S. provides the foundation to conceptualize federal regulations and attempts at parity. Literature regarding federal legislation, such as the Mental Health Parity Addiction and Equity Act (MHPAEA), the Affordable Care Act, and Medicaid expansion; BH facilities and …

Iterative Data Augmentation For Enhancing Deep Learning Performance With Limited Training Data, Avinash Singh Jan 2026

Iterative Data Augmentation For Enhancing Deep Learning Performance With Limited Training Data, Avinash Singh

ETDs from 2020-2029

Deep learning models have demonstrated impressive performance across different domains; however, their effectiveness heavily depends on large, well annotated datasets. In practice, data are often limited in size, leading to overfitting, poor generalization, and degraded model robustness and performance. Moreover, conventional augmentation techniques are typically static in nature, lack adaptability during training, and can produce geometrically inconsistent or unrealistic mixed images. This dissertation addresses three major challenges in data augmentation and model generalization: (1) the scarcity of labeled data and limited dataset size, (2) the absence of adaptive mechanisms for dynamically adjusting learning parameters during training, and (3) the creation …

Publications and Research

This report offers a statistical snapshot of micromobility across the city over a three-week period in late 2025. Our team of trained researchers systematically observed over 1,700 micromobility vehicles at 155 separate intersections across the five boroughs of New York City. Our primary findings describe overall patterns in the demographics of micromobility and vehicle behavior at city intersections, and show how this behavior is shaped by variations in infrastructure as well as individual-level attributes.

Metaverse-Enabled Digital Twins For Business And Smart Cities: Toward A Human-Centered Framework For Digital Transformation, Rasem Qudaih, Nicholas Caldwell, Imen Ben Salem, A. Karthi Jan 2026

Metaverse-Enabled Digital Twins For Business And Smart Cities: Toward A Human-Centered Framework For Digital Transformation, Rasem Qudaih, Nicholas Caldwell, Imen Ben Salem, A. Karthi

All Works

Digital Twin (DT) technologies are increasingly changing how businesses and cities model, assess, and enhance complex systems. Traditional DTs have served as static representations of tangible assets, providing monitoring and predictive functionalities. However, minimal stakeholder engagement and a focus on specific sectors have often limited their full potential. The rise of the metaverse, reinforced by Extended Reality (XR) technologies, presents a unique chance to evolve DTs into immersive, interactive, and human-centered platforms for collaborative decision-making. This integration allows stakeholders to visualize and engage with multidimensional data in real time, facilitating predictive analysis, scenario planning, and participatory governance. In business environments, …

Liturgies Of The Self: Contemporary American Cult Fiction, Identity, And Narrative Evangelism, Kerry Hillis Goff Jan 2026

Liturgies Of The Self: Contemporary American Cult Fiction, Identity, And Narrative Evangelism, Kerry Hillis Goff

Electronic Theses and Dissertations Archive

“Liturgies of the Self: Contemporary American Cult Fiction, Identity, and Narrative Evangelism,” examines how American novels from 1980 to the present stage cultic logic as a cultural grammar of belonging. Across two cohorts—1980–2000 and 2001–present—the project demonstrates how narratives of consumerism, violence, embodiment, race, and simulation reveal identity as liturgical performance rather than autonomous selfhood. The first cohort—Don DeLillo’s White Noise (1985), Chuck Palahniuk’s Fight Club (1996), Bret Easton Ellis’s American Psycho (1991), Douglas Coupland’s Generation X (1991), and Katherine Dunn’s Geek Love (1989)—dramatizes cultic rituals through spectacle, grotesque display, and overt performance. DeLillo stages consumer spectacle as collective liturgy; …

Thinking Otherwise With Children In Cities: A Storying Approach To Co-Researching With Children And Teachers, William A. Parnell, Sally Guyon

Leadership, Learning and Counseling Faculty Publications and Presentations

This Children in Cities research project examines an approach to storying research that foregrounds collaborative meaning-making between educators and young children in their city. Through exploring how educators and young children might “think otherwise” about teaching, learning, and participation with history, Place noticing and entanglements between humans, more-than-human, and non-humans, three stories and a metaphor surface in the data. Drawing on three stories, metaphor is employed as an analytic and integrative device to deepen interpretation of lived experiences. Central to the methodology is a democratic orientation that seeks to reduce hierarchical boundaries, engaging children aged 3–5 as co-researchers in the …

Minding Machines: A Note On Alienation, Sascha Engel Jan 2026

Minding Machines: A Note On Alienation, Sascha Engel

Fast Capitalism

This paper discusses an underrepresented dimension of contemporary alienation: that of machines, and particularly of computing machines. The term 'machine' is understood here in the broadest sense, spanning anything from agricultural harvesters to cars and planes. Likewise, 'computing machine' is understood broadly, from homeostatic machines, such as thermostats, to algorithmic universal machines, such as smartphones. I suggest that a form of alienation manifests in the functionalist use and description of machines in general; that is, in descriptions of machines as mere tools or testaments to human ingenuity. Such descriptions ignore the real and often capricious existence of machines as everyday …

Ignoring Goethe's Faust: A Critical-Theoretical Perspective On American Ideology, Harry F. Dahms Jan 2026

Ignoring Goethe's Faust: A Critical-Theoretical Perspective On American Ideology, Harry F. Dahms

Fast Capitalism

The neglect of Goethe, his work in general, and Faust in particular, in English-speaking countries, is notorious. While Shakespeare's plays have been prominent and widely performed in German-speaking countries, the same is not true for Goethe in the English-speaking world. Focusing non-exclusively on Faust, and cutting a link to Thomas Mann's Doctor Faustus, I will endeavor to delineate problematic aspects of American ideology, and what it would take, within U.S. sociology, to be cognizant of the latter.   Georg Lukacs wrote about Goethe and Faust, and so did Theodor W. Adorno and Leo Loewenthal, highlighting its importance to critical theory. The …

Pitfalls Of Multiplied 3d Landforms Projection: Mapping Deep Multilevel Cave Systems In The Alps (Gamssteig Cave System, Göll Massif), Mateusz Golicz, Jacek Szczygieł Jan 2026

Pitfalls Of Multiplied 3d Landforms Projection: Mapping Deep Multilevel Cave Systems In The Alps (Gamssteig Cave System, Göll Massif), Mateusz Golicz, Jacek Szczygieł

International Journal of Speleology

Cave mapping represents one of the most complex challenges in geomorphological cartography, as it must convey the true three-dimensional geometry of subterranean spaces such as overlapping passages, irregular cross-sections, and variable ceiling and floor morphologies, within a two-dimensional framework. This study examines the methodological and interpretive challenges of cave mapping, utilizing the Gamssteighöhle cave in the Austrian Alps as a case study. During the 11 years of exploration, over 10 km of passages were surveyed using the DistoX vector survey method. Yet, the complex morphological forms necessitated deviations from the standard symbology recommended by the International Union of Speleology. Several …

Extracted data were synthesized using a multi-level analytical framework encompassing individual, organizational, …

Balls, Boots, And Bats: Indo-Fijian Women Reimagining Sport, Masculinity, And Identity In The Global South, Rohini Balram Jan 2026

Balls, Boots, And Bats: Indo-Fijian Women Reimagining Sport, Masculinity, And Identity In The Global South, Rohini Balram

Journal of Global South Sport Studies

In Fiji, physicality and hegemonic masculinity are largely defined by rugby and the military, institutions dominated by Indigenous Fijian men, who are predominantly Christian, often marginalising other races, genders, religions, and sports. While research in the Global South has examined intersections of race and gender, little is known about how masculinity is understood across different sports, sporting icons, and contexts—particularly from the perspective of South Asian migrant women in Oceania with hybrid identities. This paper investigates how young Indo-Fijian women negotiate masculinity, identity, and agency through sport, Bollywood cinema, social media, and cultural narratives. Drawing on a year-long, multi-method participatory …

Gis-Based Multi-Criteria Land Suitability Analysis For Five Tropical Forage Legumes In Highland Agroecosystems, Cori Qamara, Dwi Yuzaria, Fuad Madarisa, Anugrah Budiarsa

Jurnal Ilmu Ternak Universitas Padjadjaran

In this study, GIS-based land suitability analysis is used to optimize the cultivation of forage for goat production in Limapuluh Kota Regency, West Sumatra. We assessed five important forages—cassava, Calliandra calothyrsus, Gliricidia sepium, Sesbania grandiflora, and Leucaena leucocephala—by incorporating a multi-criteria evaluation (including slope, soil characteristics, and climate conditions). Results show clear agroecological niches: cassava flourishes extensively, even on marginal lands, C. calothyrus and G. sepium need specific adaptations to soil and climate, Sesbania grandiflora excels as a high-protein choice in various zones, whereas Leucaena leucocephala requires strict geographic targeting. Processing protocols (sun-drying, co-feeding) and species-specific …

Rethinking “Moroccan Personality”: Historical Grounding And Interpretation In Ṭayeb Biad’S Al-Šakhṣiyya Al-Maġribiyya: TaʾṢīl Wa-TaʾWīl, Taoufik Ait Bouchgour Jan 2026

Rethinking “Moroccan Personality”: Historical Grounding And Interpretation In Ṭayeb Biad’S Al-Šakhṣiyya Al-Maġribiyya: TaʾṢīl Wa-TaʾWīl, Taoufik Ait Bouchgour

Faits de Langue et Société (FLS)

This article offers an academic discussion of Ṭayyib Biyāḍ’s al-Šakhṣiyya al-Maġribiyya: Taʾṣīl wa-Taʾwīl (Tīṭwān, Editions Bāb al-Ḥikma, 2024), arguing that the book reframes a highly politicized identity question into a historical problem open to critical inquiry. The discussion highlights three main analytical operators: (1) space (al-insān wa-al-maǧāl) as a key to understanding circulation, borders, and social recomposition; (2) the longue durée as a safeguard against essentializing “personality”; and (3) the use of historical thresholds—baṣmat al-islām (the imprint of Islam) and ṣadmat al-ḥadāṯa (the shock of modernity)—together with the notion of al-izdiwāǧiyya (duality) to interpret contemporary tensions. In dialogue with classic …

Recent Trends And New Evidence In Economics And Finance Education Jan 2026

Recent Trends And New Evidence In Economics And Finance Education

Journal of Economics and Finance Education

The teaching of pre-college economics has been widely researched for over 45 years with studies focused upon teacher training and improving students’ understanding. This paper reviews that research base, and reports the results of a new national survey, as well as a summary of several recent developments in the field of economic education. Young people can learn economics best when taught by knowledgeable teachers using well developed curriculum materials. But, to accommodate expanding state requirements, pertinacious state bureaucracies must increase teacher training and curriculum standards.
