Joan, Sarah Bauerle Nov 2015

Joan, Sarah Bauerle

Master's Theses and Doctoral Dissertations

Joan is an original, programmatic piece for orchestra, with an approximate running time of eight minutes. It is inspired by the life of Joan of Arc, the French heroine at the end of the Hundred Years' War. Themes evoking major characters are presented as the piece unfolds. Along with original material, melodies from several folksongs are used in the themes representing Joan and the English. The English "Agincourt Carol" dates to the Hundred Years' War. Joan's themes, "Bring a Torch, Jeanette, Isabella" and "He is Born," are both familiar French carols. In addition to these two themes, the piece begins …

Structure And Corrosion Behavior Of Sputter Deposited Cerium Oxide Based Coatings With Various Thickness On Al 2024-T3 Alloy Substrates, Yuanyuan Liu, Jiamu Huang, James B. Claypool, Carlos E. Castano, Matthew J. O'Keefe

Materials Science and Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works

Cerium oxide-based coatings from ∼100 to ∼1400 nm in thickness were deposited onto Al 2024-T3 alloy substrates by magnetron sputtering of a 99.99% pure CeO2 target. The crystallite size of CeO2 coatings increased from 15 nm to 46 nm as the coating thickness increased from ∼100 nm to ∼1400 nm. The inhomogeneous lattice strain increased from 0.36% to 0.91% for the ∼100 nm to ∼900 nm thick coatings and slightly decreased to 0.89% for the ∼1400 nm thick coating. The highest adhesion strength to Al alloy substrates was for the ∼210 nm thick coating, due to a continuous …

Emerging Immunopharmacological Targets In Multiple Sclerosis., Mojtaba Farjam, Guang-Xian Zhang, Bogoljub Ciric, Abdolmohamad Rostami

Department of Neurology Faculty Papers

Inflammatory demyelination of the central nervous system (CNS) is the hallmark of multiple sclerosis (MS), a chronic debilitating disease that affects more than 2.5 million individuals worldwide. It has been widely accepted, although not proven, that the major pathogenic mechanism of MS involves myelin-reactive T cell activation in the periphery and migration into the CNS, which subsequently triggers an inflammatory cascade that leads to demyelination and axonal damage. Virtually all MS medications now in use target the immune system and prevent tissue damage by modulating neuroinflammatory processes. Although current therapies such as commonly prescribed disease-modifying medications decrease the relapse rate …

Measured Indoor Temperatures, Thermal Comfort And Overheating Risk: Post-Occupancy Evaluation Of Low Energy Houses In The Uk, Rv Jones, S Goodhew, Wilde P De Nov 2015

Measured Indoor Temperatures, Thermal Comfort And Overheating Risk: Post-Occupancy Evaluation Of Low Energy Houses In The Uk, Rv Jones, S Goodhew, Wilde P De

School of Art, Design and Architecture

There is growing concern in Western Europe that higher insulation and air tightness of residential buildings may lead to increased overheating risk during the summer. This risks undoing the energy savings as it may lead to the introduction of active cooling systems in buildings that so far have been cooled by natural means. This paper discusses temperature monitoring from houses in the Southwest of the UK that were built to low-energy standards (Code for Sustainable Homes Level 5). Results were analyzed using both established static overheating criteria and an adaptive thermal comfort standard. Findings suggest that these houses can be …

The Architecture Of Polish Catholic Churches In Chicago, Victoria Granacki Nov 2015

The Architecture Of Polish Catholic Churches In Chicago, Victoria Granacki

Chicago Catholic Immigrants Conference

Polish church architecture flourished for 40 years in Chicago, beginning with St. Stanislaus Kostka, considered the “mother church” of all Polonia. The Reverend Vincent Barzynski of the Congregation of the Resurrection founded 23 Polish parishes in Chicago from 1872 until his death in 1899. New “national parishes” serving specific ethnic groups continued into the early 20th century. But Cardinal Mundelein arrived in Chicago in 1916 determined to transform the city’s fractured ethnic fiefdoms into a unified American church. By the end of the 1920s the halcyon days of traditional Chicago church design had come to a close. This richly …

Strategies And Resources To Enhance Test Evaluation And Selection, Janet F. Carlson, Nancy Anderson Nov 2015

Strategies And Resources To Enhance Test Evaluation And Selection, Janet F. Carlson, Nancy Anderson

Buros Center: Professional Staff Publications

Testing serves an important function for SLPs in offering an evidence base that is useful in screening, diagnosing, monitoring progress, and documenting outcomes. Tests are used to measure diverse constructs such as communication, literacy, oral and written language, receptive and expressive vocabulary, articulation, phonological awareness and processing, and auditory perception and processing. In addition, specific impairments may require specialized measures to evaluate conditions such as stuttering and orthographic competence.

When using tests to diagnose language impairments, Betz, Eickhoff, and Sullivan (2013) suggest that SLPs consider carefully a test’s psychometric properties, particularly because of the “increasing emphasis on evidence-based practice, specifically, …

Relationships Of Haemosporidian Parasites To Populations Of Their Avian Hosts In Eastern North America, Vincenzo Alexander Ellis Nov 2015

Relationships Of Haemosporidian Parasites To Populations Of Their Avian Hosts In Eastern North America, Vincenzo Alexander Ellis

Dissertations

Avian Haemosporida are common, vector-transmitted blood parasites of birds throughout the world. During my dissertation research, I explored how multiple host species respond immunologically to natural infections in the wild (Chapter 1) and to experimental infections in the laboratory (Chapter 2). Despite their tractability as a model host-parasite system and a burgeoning literature on avian Haemosporida, little is known about how their populations interact across large areas (hereafter “regions”). I present data from parasite surveys of birds across eastern North America suggesting that continental parasite populations track host populations across the region, but also that the host breadth of a …

Cognitive Coaching As Form Of Professional Development In A Linguistically Diverse School, Alla Gonzalez Del Castillo Nov 2015

Cognitive Coaching As Form Of Professional Development In A Linguistically Diverse School, Alla Gonzalez Del Castillo

Dissertations

While American classrooms are described as linguistically diverse, teachers find themselves unprepared to successfully educate such students. Previous studies indicate that cognitive coaching is one form of professional development that can assist teachers in becoming self-directed practitioners who are able to reflect on their practice and adjust it to meet the needs of various learners, including linguistically diverse students (Batt, 2010; Costa & Garmston, 2002; Joyce & Showers, 2002). This study describes elementary teachers’ perceptions of cognitive coaching in a linguistically diverse school: (1) In what ways do teachers perceive cognitive coaching as professional development? (2) How do observed teacher …

What I Taught My Stem Instructor About Teaching: What A Deaf Student Hears That Others Cannot, Annemarie Ross, Randy K. Yerrick Nov 2015

What I Taught My Stem Instructor About Teaching: What A Deaf Student Hears That Others Cannot, Annemarie Ross, Randy K. Yerrick

Journal of Science Education for Students with Disabilities

Overall, science teaching at the university level has remained in a relatively static state. There is much research and debate among university faculty regarding the most effective methods of teaching science. But it remains largely rhetoric. The traditional lecture model in STEM higher education is limping along in its march toward inclusion and equity. The NGSS and Common Core reform efforts do little to help university science teachers to change their orientation from largely lecture-driven practice with laboratory supplements. While it is impossible to address all diverse student groups, the need for accommodations tend to be overlooked. As a Deaf …

Developing Human Capacity For Marine Scientific Research In Myanmar, Roxane S. De Waegh Nov 2015

Developing Human Capacity For Marine Scientific Research In Myanmar, Roxane S. De Waegh

Open Access Theses

Scientists worldwide believe that sustainable resource management must be based on results derived from successful research (Strigl, 2003). Therefore, scientists are constantly engaged in research projects in order to obtain more results and create new knowledge. In this constant pursuit of knowledge, the international scientific community is minimally participating in the development of human capacity, especially when their research is based in low-income countries (LIC) (Strigl, 2003). This research-based agenda benefits scientific societies in developed countries, as they continuously add value to their knowledge-based economy, while the local communities’ education levels remain stagnant. LIC’s needs in education and science are …

The Marriage Of Figaro Nov 2015

The Marriage Of Figaro

Taylor Theatre Playbills

Taylor Theatre presents an original translation of Mozart's comic-opera, "The Marriage of Figaro."

Mozart's "The Marriage of Figaro" whisks us through the events of one crazy day as Figaro, the Lord's valet, tries to wed Susanna, the Lady's maid, before their philandering master can get to her first. Filled with Mozart's glorious music, The Marriage of Figaro is widely regarded to be one of the greatest comic operas ever written. Our production will see its plot of intrigue, mistaken identities, and unexpected revelations unravel in early 20th Century England in which the servants who live downstairs are perfectly capable of …

Mol-Pcr For Snp Based Detection And Characterization Of Stec Non-O157 Strains, Heather M. Mendez Nov 2015

Mol-Pcr For Snp Based Detection And Characterization Of Stec Non-O157 Strains, Heather M. Mendez

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) strains are important food-borne pathogens that have been linked to human illness. In the United States, STEC O157:H7 strains have been attributed to the majority of disease and outbreaks; however, the frequency of disease associated with STEC non-O157 strains have also increased and is often under recognized due to diagnostic limitations. In 2012, the Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) implemented mandatory testing for non-O157 STEC serogroups O26, O45, O103, O111, O121, and O145. Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) have been identified in the O-antigen gene cluster for each of the non-O157 STEC serogroups that can …
