Development Of 11-Plex Assay For The Rapid Screening Of Samples For Detection Of Shiga Toxin-Producing E. Coli, Travis Woods

Biomedical Engineering ETDs

Shiga toxin-producing Escherichia coli (STEC) have been identified by the USDA as a serious threat to the nations health stemming from contaminations in the food supply, specifically, the beef chain. I have developed an assay that is able to screen samples for STEC in a rapid and multiplexed format. Multiplex oligonucleotide ligation-PCR (MOL- PCR) is a nucleic acid based assay patented at Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL) that uses flow cytometry and multiplex microsphere arrays for detection of nucleic acid based signatures. By using MOL-PCR for detecting unique STEC DNA signatures in samples from the beef supply chain (farm to …

The Libraries They Are A-Changin’: How Libraries Reorganize, John Novak, Annette Day Nov 2015

The Libraries They Are A-Changin’: How Libraries Reorganize, John Novak, Annette Day

Library Faculty Research

This paper will report on the results of a study of library reorganizations in the literature. The authors identified five steps common to all library reorganizations, and this paper describes those steps as well as two management change theories most mentioned in the literature--the eight-step process of change by John Kotter and Reframing Organizations by Lee G. Bolman and Terrence E. Deal. The paper will draw conclusions formed by a comparison of these theoretical models to the practice and real life experience of reorganizations as described by libraries in the literature.

Research Brief: "Impact Of Parents' Wartime Military Deployment And Injury On Young Children's Safety And Mental Health", Institute For Veterans And Military Families At Syracuse University

Institute for Veterans and Military Families

This brief is about the relationship between the mental health of military children and parental deployment. In policy and practice, healthcare providers and teachers should understand the risks during the post-deployment period and the DoD should implement programs to help military families during the post-deployment period. Suggestions for future research include conducting a study over time on this topic, as well as expanding the sample to include longer and multiple deployments and various age groups of children within military families.

Knowledge, Attitudes And Practices (Kap) On Rift Valley Fever Among Pastoralist Communities Of Ijara District, North Eastern Kenya, Ismail H. Abdi, Hippolyte D. Affognon, Anthony K. Wanjoya, Washington Onyango-Ouma, Rosemary Sang Nov 2015

Knowledge, Attitudes And Practices (Kap) On Rift Valley Fever Among Pastoralist Communities Of Ijara District, North Eastern Kenya, Ismail H. Abdi, Hippolyte D. Affognon, Anthony K. Wanjoya, Washington Onyango-Ouma, Rosemary Sang

All Peer-Reviewed Publications

Outbreaks of Rift Valley fever (RVF), a mosquito-borne viral zoonosis, have previously been associated with unusually heavy rainfall and extensive flooding. The disease is a serious public health problem in Africa and the Middle East, and is a potential global health threat. In Kenya, outbreaks of the disease have disproportionately affected impoverished pastoralist communities. This study sought to assess the knowledge, attitudes and practices (KAP) regarding RVF among the pastoralists of North Eastern Kenya, and to establish the determinants of KAP on RVF. A cross-sectional study involving 392 pastoralists living in Ijara district (Masalani and Ijara wards) was carried out …

Beyond Fruit: Examining Community In A Community Orchard, Emily Jane Becker Nov 2015

Beyond Fruit: Examining Community In A Community Orchard, Emily Jane Becker

Dissertations and Theses

The Fruits of Diversity Community Orchard, located in Portland, Oregon in an affordable housing neighborhood, is a site of alternative food provisioning in which a group of people, organized by two nonprofits, work together to manage fruit and nut producing plants. Through conversations with volunteers who participate regularly and participant observation, this study explores the questions: What does community mean in the context of a community orchard? In what ways does partnering with a nonprofit from outside the neighborhood influence community and the way the project is operationalized?

This thesis situates community orchards within the literature on alternative food networks …

Instruments To Measure The Inpatient Hospital Experience: A Literature Review, Kelly J. Edwards, Kim Walker, Jed Duff Nov 2015

Instruments To Measure The Inpatient Hospital Experience: A Literature Review, Kelly J. Edwards, Kim Walker, Jed Duff

Patient Experience Journal

Healthcare professionals worldwide are increasingly broadening their focus to include the experiences of patients and their family members as a means of assessing quality patient centered care. This paper seeks to identify and discuss instruments specifically designed to measure the inpatient hospital experience. A literature search focusing on pre-identified instruments as per the Health Foundation’s Helping Measuring Patient Centered Care database of measurement instruments (de Silva, 2014) and additional health databases (CINAHL, ERIC, EBSCO, HaPI, MEDLINE, PubMed and Psych INFO) was undertaken. Thirteen relevant instruments and seventeen associated studies (regarding instrument development and or validation) were identified. These instruments provide …

Conceptualising Multiple Conditions In Australia: First Steps To Systemic Change To Meet The Needs Of People With Serious Long-Term Illnesses, Christine F. Walker

Patient Experience Journal

Since the 1970s greater numbers of people are now living with several serious long term illnesses. These include rarer genetic conditions and ‘lifestyle conditions’ as well as those of an idiopathic nature. This article examines the growing need for new terms and concepts that reflect the changes in the lives of people living with long-term serious illnesses.

Members of the Chronic Illness Alliance attended a workshop where they presented their experiences and views of living with multi-morbidities. Consumers were concerned about treatment side-effects, polypharmacy, adverse events and the need for coordinated care. Following this workshop, the Chronic Illness Alliance undertook …

Should I Stay Or Should I Go? Patient Understandings Of And Responses To Source-Isolation Practices, Mary Wyer, Rick Iedema, Christine Jorm, Gary Armstrong, Su-Yin Hor, Claire Hooker, Debra Jackson, Clarissa Hughes, Matthew V.N. O'Sullivan, Gwendolyn L. Gilbert Nov 2015

Gilbert

Patient Experience Journal

Isolation of patients, who are colonised or infected with a multidrug-resistant organism (source-isolation), is a common practice in most acute health-care settings, to prevent transmission to other patients. Efforts to improve the efficacy of source-isolation in hospitals focus on healthcare staff compliance with isolation precautions. In this article we examine patients’ awareness, understandings and observance of source-isolation practices and directives with a view to understanding better the roles patients play or could play in transmitting, or limiting transmission, of multidrug-resistant organisms (MRO). Seventeen source-isolated adult surgical patients and two relatives participated in video-reflexive ethnography and interviews. We learned that, although …
