Exploring Classroom Practices In Collectivist Cultures Through The Lens Of Hofstede’S Model, Amrita Kaur, Mohammad Noman Nov 2015

Exploring Classroom Practices In Collectivist Cultures Through The Lens Of Hofstede’S Model, Amrita Kaur, Mohammad Noman

The Qualitative Report

This study explores beliefs and classroom practices of teachers from collectivist nations through the lens of Hofstede’s cultural dimensions. In this grounded theory study, an in-depth investigation of the ways in which six teachers from five different collectivist countries described their beliefs and classroom practices was carried out. Through the constant comparative method, the two authors grouped the findings into categories of beliefs and practices which were then examined through the lens of the six dimensions of Hofstede’s model of cultural difference. Six categories of classroom practices, Pedagogy, Interaction, Student Role, Teacher Support, Differential Assessment, and Behavioral Management and three …

Fathers Caring For Children With Special Health Care Needs: Experiences Of Work-Life Fit, Claudia Sellmaier Nov 2015

Fathers Caring For Children With Special Health Care Needs: Experiences Of Work-Life Fit, Claudia Sellmaier

Dissertations and Theses

Research about employed fathers of children with special health care needs (SHCN) is still limited, leaving fathers without the necessary workplace and community supports to better integrate work and life. Caregivers with exceptional caregiving responsibilities report greater levels of work-family conflict and considerable caregiver strain, as well as negative employment and financial consequences related to their caregiving responsibilities. These caregivers often struggle to access community supports such as childcare, after-school care, and support from friends and neighbors.

This study provides insights into the types of job, home, and community resources that are relevant for fathers of children with SHCN in …

Classical Liberalism, John P. Heaphy Nov 2015

Classical Liberalism, John P. Heaphy

The Kabod

Classical Liberalism is a political philosophy that has stood the test of time. Developed by the English philosopher John Locke, classical liberalism is rooted in the ideals of individual rights and social contract. It is ultimately a Christian philosophy, as it admits the inherent sinfulness of man and the sovereignty of God. The United States of America is the greatest application of this philosophy as it prioritizes the protection of individual liberties and derives its power from the consent of the governed.

Human Language Origins: Icon For Evolution Or A Higher Order?, Dominique Lopiccolo Nov 2015

Human Language Origins: Icon For Evolution Or A Higher Order?, Dominique Lopiccolo

The Kabod

In his text Icons of Evolution, Jonathan Wells endeavors to reveal some of the many discrepancies supported as scientific fact in current evolution literature. His goal, to discredit such falsely contrived theories as Haeckel’s embryos and Darwin’s finches, is successfully managed through the observance of clear, observational evidence. Meanwhile, Wells renders these so-called “icons” of evolution as nothing more than distorted data. The question of human language origins and the evolutionist’s response serves as another icon in the rhetoric of scientific evolution, yet observations pulled from current scientific research appear to disregard this notion altogether and instead, point towards …

Person To Person In England, Raquel Escalera

2015-16 Field Notes

While still in the midst of their study abroad experiences, students at Linfield College write reflective essays. Their essays address issues of cultural similarity and difference, compare lifestyles, mores, norms, and habits between their host countries and home, and examine changes in perceptions about their host countries and the United States. In this essay, Maria Raquel Escalera Gonzalez describes her observations during her study abroad program at the University of Nottingham in England.

Ikamva Youth: Tutor Engagement Plan, Kate Lassalle-Klein, Jake Prince Nov 2015

Ikamva Youth: Tutor Engagement Plan, Kate Lassalle-Klein, Jake Prince

Miller Center Fellowship

IkamvaYouth empowers South African students from under-resourced and under-performing secondary schools to achieve academic results competitive with those of the best-funded schools in the country. The organisation is able to offer extensive tutoring services free of charge due to the hard work of its committed volunteer tutors. As more students, called “learners,” flock to join the programme and IkamvaYouth grows, it faces challenges in attracting and maintaining an optimal amount of volunteer tutors.

We conducted a quantitative online survey of tutors’ demographic information, backgrounds, and experiences with the organisation. Of IkamvaYouth’s approximately 300 tutors, 223 responded. We conducted tutor and …

Fibronectin Signals Through Integrin Α5Β1 To Regulate Cardiovascular Development In A Cell Type-Specific Manner., Dongying Chen, Xia Wang, Dong Liang, Julie Gordon, Ashok Mittal, Nancy Manley, Karl Degenhardt, Sophie Astrof

Department of Medicine Faculty Papers

Fibronectin (Fn1) is an evolutionarily conserved extracellular matrix glycoprotein essential for embryonic development. Global deletion of Fn1 leads to mid-gestation lethality from cardiovascular defects. However, severe morphogenetic defects that occur early in embryogenesis in these embryos precluded assigning a direct role for Fn1 in cardiovascular development. We noticed that Fn1 is expressed in strikingly non-uniform patterns during mouse embryogenesis, and that its expression is particularly enriched in the pharyngeal region corresponding with the pharyngeal arches 3, 4, and 6. This region bears a special importance for the developing cardiovascular system, and we hypothesized that the localized enrichment of Fn1 in …

International Doctoral Students, Their Advising Relationships And Adaptation Experiences: A Qualitative Study, Katherine Najjar Nov 2015

International Doctoral Students, Their Advising Relationships And Adaptation Experiences: A Qualitative Study, Katherine Najjar

Department of Educational Administration: Dissertations, Theses, and Student Research

Thirty four international doctoral students were interviewed to determine what types of advising and mentoring experiences were effective and beneficial, and what experiences had been difficult or unhelpful. The students reported a high level of satisfaction with their advisors and with their program of studies. However, during the interviews, students began to describe other factors that contributed to their well-being and their experiences.

Issues described included language difficulties and problems developing relationships with other students. Although most students developed close, personal relationships with advisors or departmental colleagues, few students reported having large numbers of friends and associates outside of their …

Social Policy And Practice In The Commons, Roger A. Lohmann Nov 2015

Social Policy And Practice In The Commons, Roger A. Lohmann

Faculty & Staff Scholarship

The underlying social policy imperative of the commons theory of voluntary action should be seen as nothing less than a renaissance of the Deweyian objective of recreating the endangered democratic public sphere by revitalizing community life. This is what “citizen participation” and “community development” and “coproduction” are (or should be) all about. Before the emancipatory and enlightening objectives of critical theory can be genuinely understood and applied to policy and practice in the context of the American commons, however, it must be translated fully out of the Marxian-Hegelian perspective in which it arose, and into the pragmatic context.

Justice For Border Crossing Peoples, David Watkins Nov 2015

Justice For Border Crossing Peoples, David Watkins

Political Science Faculty Publications

This chapter seeks to advance the conceptual and normative analysis of what Rogers Smith (2014) calls “appropriately differentiated citizenship” for a particular category of would-be border crossers who have so far been absent from the normative literature on immigration and exclusion: border crossing peoples.

Such peoples are defined by a longstanding history of crossing a particular international border for reasons — cultural, political, and/or economic — central to their collective identity. National territorial rights theorists such as David Miller argue that restrictive immigration policies can be justified via a collectivist Lockean analogy: Private property rights are to individuals as national …

Closed Range Composition Operators On Hilbert Function Spaces, Pratibha Ghatage, Maria Tjani Nov 2015

Closed Range Composition Operators On Hilbert Function Spaces, Pratibha Ghatage, Maria Tjani

Mathematics and Statistics Faculty Publications

We show that a Carleson measure satisfies the reverse Carleson condition if and only if its Berezin symbol is bounded below on the unit disk D. We provide new necessary and sufficient conditions for the composition operator to have closed range on the Bergman space. The pull-back measure of area measure on D plays an important role. We also give a new proof in the case of the Hardy space and conjecture a condition in the case of the Dirichlet space.

Motivation Of Japanese Descending Diaspora Entrepreneurs, Aki Harima Nov 2015

Motivation Of Japanese Descending Diaspora Entrepreneurs, Aki Harima

Studia i Materiały Wydział Zarządzania Uniwersytet Warszawski

This paper explores entrepreneurial motivation of Japanese diaspora entrepreneurs conducting their business in emerging countries. While diaspora entrepreneurs play an increasingly significant role in the modern transnationalizing economy (Newland & Tanaka, 2010), previous scholars have predominantly focused on those who originate from developing countries and migrate to more developed ones. There are, however, also entrepreneurs who originate from developed countries and establish their business in emerging countries. These people are almost invisible in the previous research even though their entrepreneurial activities are assumed to have positive impacts on the local economy. They transfer knowledge, resources and information from developed countries …

Now, We Hear Through A Voice Darkly: New Media And Narratology In Cinematic Art, James Anthony Ricci Nov 2015

Now, We Hear Through A Voice Darkly: New Media And Narratology In Cinematic Art, James Anthony Ricci

USF Tampa Graduate Theses and Dissertations

This dissertation explores the intersection of new media and narrative, as it is presented through a cinematic aesthetic. The narrative language of film is analyzed through the theoretical framework of Bakhtin’s concepts of Heteroglossia, Chronotope, and Dialogism. Bakhtin’s ideas of classifying language act as strong tools for demonstrating how cinematic narrative can inform and alter the perception of its spectators. Lev Manovich’s principles of New Media, specifically Variability, Modularity, and Automation are also utilized to demonstrate how cinema is a constantly evolving paradigm.

Chapter one focuses on the theoretical terminology, outlining the conceptual definitions and illustrating their relevance in precise …

The Costs Of Easy Victory, Michael E. Waterstone Nov 2015

The Costs Of Easy Victory, Michael E. Waterstone

William & Mary Law Review

Studies of law and social change often focus on areas of intense conflict, including abortion, gun rights, and various issues around race, gender, and sexual orientation. Each of these has entered the culture wars, inspiring fierce resistance and organized countermovements. A reasonable assumption might be that social change in less controversial areas might be easier. In this Article, I suggest that it is not that simple. Using the disability rights movement, I demonstrate how flying under the radar leads to unappreciated obstacles. The disability rights movement had a relatively easy path to the passage of the Americans with Disabilities Act …
