Reperformance: Re-Creating And Reinterpreting Performance Art's History, Harry Jacob Weil Aug 2015

Reperformance: Re-Creating And Reinterpreting Performance Art's History, Harry Jacob Weil

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation analyzes the history and theory of reperformance, arguing it as a mode of reproduction for the dissemination and institutionalization of performance art practices. In four chapters, I draw together sources in art history, performance studies, sociology, and anthropology to frame how performances of the past are re-created and reinterpreted, specifically within the context of museums and the art historical canon. While reperformance has been integral to the development of performance art since its inception in the early decades of the 20th century, my focus will turn to how post-World War II practices have been engaged with in recent …

The Text At An Impasse: Authorial, Representational, And Structural Boredoms In Selected Works By Gautier, Flaubert, And Gissing, Ashar Elizabeth Foley Aug 2015

The Text At An Impasse: Authorial, Representational, And Structural Boredoms In Selected Works By Gautier, Flaubert, And Gissing, Ashar Elizabeth Foley

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Théophile Gautier, Gustave Flaubert, and George Gissing deploy tropes of bored readers and writers and dilatory narrative structures in order to register their ambivalence toward the shift from sponsorship of the arts to a literary marketplace. In contrast to popular eighteenth- and nineteenth-century conceptions of the mood as sign of bad character, intellectual deficiency, or elitism, my chosen novelists posit boredom as a site from which to assess and critique their roles in culture. I begin with the problem of boredom's possibility in a literary text: boredom must be dispelled a priori for writing and reading to take place, making …

The Filth And The Filthier: Plumbing The Depths Of Controversial Stand-Up Comedy, Sean Springer Aug 2015

The Filth And The Filthier: Plumbing The Depths Of Controversial Stand-Up Comedy, Sean Springer

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation is a genealogy of the filthy stand-up comedian in the United States. Using case studies of five so-called filthy stand-up comedians, each chapter looks at how the filthy label has functioned as a floating signifier that is applied to certain comedians in ways that conceal what is actually transgressive about their performances. The first chapter compares Lenny Bruce's legacy to Richard Pryor's, arguing that they have misleadingly become equated as two comedians who apparently transcended their filthy words. In actual fact, white critics saw Bruce as a filthy Other because he aligned himself with Jewish and African-American cultures. …

Intrusions: Embodied Ethics In The Films Of Claire Denis, Kristin Lené Hole Aug 2015

Intrusions: Embodied Ethics In The Films Of Claire Denis, Kristin Lené Hole

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

This dissertation develops an account of a feminist cinematic ethics through the films of Claire Denis, along with the philosophy of Jean-Luc Nancy and Emmanuel Levinas. Two facets of this ethics include what I term an ethics of sense and an aesthetic of alterity. I examine how Denis presents a counter cinema to dominant Hollywood film language, by centering non-mastery, opacity, and embodied relationality in her films. Arguing that the importance of her films is best understood through the lens of ethics, I locate these ethics both at the level of the film itself and also in the sensibility the …

Advantageously Adverse: Chinese Cinemas In Transition, 1945-1951, Lunpeng Ma Aug 2015

Advantageously Adverse: Chinese Cinemas In Transition, 1945-1951, Lunpeng Ma

Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)

Gone with the Wind (1939), a Hollywood prestige picture, was translated into Chinese as A Beauty at a Turbulent Time in 1946 and became a box-office hit at Shanghai. Its startling success, however, was soon overwhelmed in every aspect by a domestic film, The Spring River Flows East. This second blockbuster indicates the revitalization of Chinese cinemas in terms of aesthetics, genre, and industry in the aftermath of the Japanese occupation. Nevertheless, the translated title A Beauty at a Turbulent Time subliminally manifested the worries and dreams of China in a chaotic period. In this dissertation I examine postwar Chinese …

Lost, Beat, Blank: The Punk Unconscious In Subversive And Transgressive Cultural Productions, Joel R. West Aug 2015

Lost, Beat, Blank: The Punk Unconscious In Subversive And Transgressive Cultural Productions, Joel R. West

Theses and Dissertations - UTB/UTPA

Although punk was not used as a signifying term for a subculture or its cultural production until the 1970s, the punk spirit can be identified within cultural texts that precede the term. A punk aesthetics includes rejection of societal norms, class-consciousness, and spontaneity, or a do-it-yourself (DIY) approach that is antagonistic toward the modes of production. In this thesis, I claim and develop a concept I call the punk unconscious; in the texts I examine, punk aesthetics can be found just below the surface through the employment of specific theoretical frameworks, namely Fredric Jameson’s political unconscious and Mikhail Bakhtin’s dialogic …

Alaska Natives And The Power Of Perseverance: The Fight For Sovereignty And Land Claims In Southeast Alaska, 1912-1947, Bridget Lee Baumgarte Aug 2015

Alaska Natives And The Power Of Perseverance: The Fight For Sovereignty And Land Claims In Southeast Alaska, 1912-1947, Bridget Lee Baumgarte

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

In 1867, the United States purchased Alaska from Russia. Americans viewed Alaska as a source of natural resources, at first engaging in the dwindling fur trade and then expanding to mining and the commercial salmon fishery by the turn of the century. For Alaska’s Indigenous people, these tumultuous times resulted in the loss of Indigenous land and resources. Although Natives attempted to solve land disputes through diplomacy, Americans rarely listened and often ignored aboriginal land title. In 1912, young Alaska Native leaders formed the Alaska Native Brotherhood (ANB), an organization committed to helping Alaska Natives adjust to the changes brought …

Effects Of Human Maternal Placentophagy On Maternal Postpartum Iron-Status, Laura Kathleen Gryder Aug 2015

Effects Of Human Maternal Placentophagy On Maternal Postpartum Iron-Status, Laura Kathleen Gryder

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Recently, human maternal placenta ingestion, known as placentophagy, has emerged as a rare but growing practice among postpartum mothers in industrialized societies, and is currently found in both home birth and hospital birth settings. The practice is purported to result in certain health benefits for postpartum mothers, some of which could be related to the iron content in full-term placenta (e.g., increased energy and an improved and more rapid postpartum recovery, among others). The aim of this research project was to investigate the effect of encapsulated placentophagy on maternal postpartum iron status via a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled pilot study (n=28). …

What I Wore Today: Gender, Self, And Brand Culture In The Blogosphere, Jennifer Marie Whitmer Aug 2015

What I Wore Today: Gender, Self, And Brand Culture In The Blogosphere, Jennifer Marie Whitmer

UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones

Drawing on qualitative research with personal style bloggers, I examine how contemporary social conditions impact the parameters for the presentation of self in gendered ways. I relate these changes to the struggle for recognition in the face of social anxieties and a lack of stable referents for the self. Bloggers are encouraged to think of themselves as brands. The discourse of self-branding promises greater control over one’s image and life chances, but the practice of presenting a cohesive self-brand to an unseen audience destabilizes the self and increases bloggers’ risk of discreditation and invalidation. Bloggers manage their brands through the …

Coordinate Regulation Of The Wnt And Hippo Pathways By The Novel Ras Effector Nore1a., Marvin Lee Schmidt Jr. Aug 2015

Coordinate Regulation Of The Wnt And Hippo Pathways By The Novel Ras Effector Nore1a., Marvin Lee Schmidt Jr.

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Ras is the most frequently activated oncogene found in human cancer, but its mechanisms of action remain only partially understood. Ras activates multiple signaling pathways in order to promote transformation, but can also exhibit a potent ability to induce growth arrest and death. NORE1A (RASSF5) is a direct Ras effector that acts as a tumor suppressor promoting senescence and apoptosis. Its expression is frequently lost in human tumors and its mechanism of action remains unclear. Here I show that NORE1A forms a direct, Ras regulated, complex with β-TrCP, the substrate recognition component of the SCF-β-TrCP ubiquitin ligase complex. NORE1A also …

Exercise Mitigates The Effects Of Hyperhomocysteinemia On Adverse Skeletal Muscle Remodeling., Lee Winchester Aug 2015

Exercise Mitigates The Effects Of Hyperhomocysteinemia On Adverse Skeletal Muscle Remodeling., Lee Winchester

Electronic Theses and Dissertations

Background: Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) is heavily implicated in diabetes and cardiovascular disease. HHcy is known for causing inflammation and vascular remodeling, particularly through production of reactive oxygen species (ROS) and matrix metalloproteinase-9 (MMP-9). Although its impact on skeletal muscle is rather unclear, HHcy is known to cause skeletal muscle weakness and functional impairment. The impact of HHcy on inflammation makes it seem likely that HHcy causes skeletal muscle fibrosis through induction of inflammatory factors and destructive macrophages. Exercise has been shown to reduce homocysteine levels and therefore, could serve as a promising intervention for HHcy. The purpose of this study was …

Following Kullak's biography, aspects of note-reading, fingering, rhythm, technique, and musicality are discussed and illustrated in specific examples from the music.

The Representation Of The Individualism-Collectivism Cultural Value Dimension In Film Portrayals Of Intercultural Communication, Courtney J. Mcmullan Aug 2015

The Representation Of The Individualism-Collectivism Cultural Value Dimension In Film Portrayals Of Intercultural Communication, Courtney J. Mcmullan

Honors Theses

Globalization and modernization have changed the world in which we live, bringing intercultural communication to the forefront in our daily lives. Cultural values vary around the world, and these values impact the way people communicate with one another. This study focused on the cultural value of individualism-collectivism and how it impacts intercultural, interpersonal communication and the way it is presented in film. The aim of this study was to conduct quantitative analyses of data gathered from intercultural films to identify the way in which nations' individualism-collectivism tendencies are displayed in film in comparison to a cultural value dimension scale and …

Konflik Internal Multikulturalisme Dalam Film Good Bye Lennin!, Resti Nurfaidah

Germany is one of several countries in the world that has ever been upside-down in historical experience. A long history proved that Germany was used to be a union. But unfortunately it had split based on ideological differences. Though was originating from same ancestors, language, culture, it was fallen into an extreme internal multicultural conflict as proved by the establishment of the wall. During these period, a long history of human relations in both German were well recorded. Besides, it was taken as insprirations in many literary or artistic works, including films. Legal Fictions: The Trope Of Criminality In Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Brian D. Breed Jul 2015

Legal Fictions: The Trope Of Criminality In Nineteenth-Century American Literature, Brian D. Breed

Open Access Dissertations

This dissertation investigates some of the ways in which nineteenth-century American literatures interrogate liberal subjectivity through the trope of the criminal. Specifically I argue that the texts treated hereafter employ the trope of criminality to imagine and model transformations of liberal subjectivity. One can divide my argument into two sections, each composed of two chapters. In my first section I discuss how Uncle Tom's Cabin and Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl challenge the legislation enfranchising slavery through narrated dialectics. The second section, which takes as its foci The Blithedale Romance and some of Bret Harte's short fiction …

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article examines the religious transformation of the Muslim middle class and its relationship with the growing sharia market in post-New Order Indonesia. It argues that in the Indonesian neo-liberal era, this spiritual revival considerably influenced the economic realm. The transformation of piety of the Indonesian middle class marked the emergence of new potential economic markets. It was responded to enthusiastically by markets producing selective products with a spiritual content. In its process, the role of spiritual lifestyle agents played a pivotal role in helping and shaping the new urban middle class who consume Islam to mark their Islamic identity. …

Modernitas Dan Tragedi: Kritik Dalam Sosiologi Humanistis Zygmunt Bauman, Robertus Robet Jul 2015

Modernitas Dan Tragedi: Kritik Dalam Sosiologi Humanistis Zygmunt Bauman, Robertus Robet

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

There are only two different occurances in modernity: solid modernity and liquid modernity. Solid Modernity operates to create logic of order, categorization and administration. Liquid Modernity works as an illusion of speed and perpetual changes. Mode of categorization in solid modernity has sparked the logic of partiality and nonpartialitity in society. Holocaust -according to Bauman- is an impact of the incapability of the modernity to define ambivalence subject in the mode of categorization. Jews is historical subject that is ambivalence in the eye of regime of categorization. Based on this historical trauma, Bauman propose a new horison in Sociology: Sociology …

Membangun Bencana: Tinjauan Kritis Atas Peran Negara Dalam Kasus Lapindo, Anton Novenanto

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article begins with the emergence and shared assumptions of the absence of the state in Lapindo case. This article aims to problematize ‘the truth’ of such assumptions. Adopting Oliver-Smith’s definition of “disasters of development,” this article argues that disaster is not just an event but also a process which can be elaborated through an examination of encompassing political agendas. Therefore, it can trigger the awareness of preventive actions prior to a disaster. The argument of the article are based on a series of critical re-reading of public documents related to the case. The result of such reading shows that …

Masyarakat: Jurnal Sosiologi

This article discusses about the process of identity reconstruction of actor in KISS community in the era of cultural globalization. Using a qualitative method and Zygmunt Bauman’s concept of liquid modernity and moral agency as framework analysis, this study shows how the construction of moral identity process begins with the actor disquite over the state of traditional culture in globalization era. Alien Comforts: The Languages And Foodways Of Chinese Americans And Hawaiian Locals In U.S. Popular Culture, Jared Demick Jul 2015

Alien Comforts: The Languages And Foodways Of Chinese Americans And Hawaiian Locals In U.S. Popular Culture, Jared Demick

Doctoral Dissertations

My project deals with how the grotesque and simplifying distortion of Chinese American and Hawaiian Local languages and foodways has been used to promote facile multiculturalist encounters and the ways in which contemporary writers from those ethnic groups have attempted to articulate other ethnic formulations free from what I call minstrel gestures. These writers instead valorize innovation and transformation over an adherence to past traditions already pillaged and stereotyped by hegemonic interests. This strategy—which I dub the creole relational mode—has worked to varying degrees of success in creating the possibilities for oppositional cultural formations. While these oppositional cultural …

Issues In Women's Liberation Struggles In Contemporary Nigeria: A Study Of Ezeigbo's Hands That Crush Stone (2010), Osita C. Ezenwanebe

Journal of International Women's Studies

This paper evaluates some contentious issues in women’s liberation struggles in Nigeria as recreated in Ezeigbo’s play, Hands that Crush Stone. The particularities of gender are neglected in the anti-colonial struggle for Nigerian independence, and women’s issues are subsumed within the nationalist literatures of cultural regeneration. With the influence of feminism, many Nigerian women embark on the identification of women’s personhood by controverting the representations of Nigerian women in male-centered works. African theatre, in particular, is very skeptical about the feminist ideology aimed at changing the status of women in society. Similarly, many people are suspicious of women’s liberation struggle …

Scholars interested in the publishing history of gay and lesbian literature will find key resources available at the McCain Library & Archives at the University of Southern Mississippi. As Curator of Special Collections, I did not set out to create a collection of LGBT materials, but as I worked with items from writers and others with Mississippi connections I noticed a fair amount of books and periodicals related to gay and lesbian topics on our shelves. Curators always hope for multifaceted research potential with the resources we obtain for our libraries, and I was pleased to discover the emerging opportunities …

Looking Behind The Scenes: An Assessment Of The Interdependence Of Brazilian Cultural Industries, Amir Borges Ferreira Neto, Fernando Perobelli, Alexandre Rabelo

Regional Research Institute Working Papers

How important is Brazil’s cultural industries to its economy? We provide an answer to this question by evaluating the interdependence of the cultural activities in the Brazilian production structure and its evolution over the last few years (2005 – 2009). To accomplish this, we disaggregate 13 cultural economic industries in the Brazilian input-output table and calculate several indexes, such as, the production multiplier, linkage indexes, fields of influence and extraction analysis. Results show that the only cultural sector with high links to other sectors in the production structure is Telecommunication, edition and news agencies and that this sector provides the …

Gender Equality, Community Divisions And Autonomy: The Prospera Conditional Cash Transfer Program In Chiapas, Mexico, Óscar F. Gil-García

Sociology & Anthropology Faculty publications

This article examines the gender equality component of Prospera, a conditional cash transfer program in Mexico that provides cash contingent on three nodes of civic engagement: health, nutrition and education. This article draws on ethnographic research in La Gloria, a settlement of indigenous Mayan refugees from Guatemala in the Mexican state of Chiapas. I identify the Prospera program’s neoliberal features, the impact its gender equality measures have in the lives of women, their families, and in the political structure of the community of La Gloria. My findings reveal how Prospera reinforces gender and racial hierarchy, fosters community divisions that …
