"Just Look At Her!": Sporting Bodies As Athletic Resistance And The Limits Of Sport Norms In The Case Of Caster Semenya, Shane Miller
Strategic Communication Studies Faculty Publications
Using the American sport media’s treatment of South African runner Caster Semenya, this article explores how in the course of defending Caster Semenya the American sport media presented a rigorous challenge to traditional conceptions of sex and gender. Yet these rhetorical efforts to deconstruct sex and gender binaries were undermined by the specific ways in which Semenya’s dual performances—athletic and gender—were visually depicted. A close reading and analysis of US sports media coverage of Caster Semenya provide an opportunity to explore the ways in which the norms of sport may foster progressive treatment of athletes whose genders do not fit …

Here, I Used To Be: Mobile Media And Practices Of Place-Based Digital Memory, Jordan Frith, Jason Kalin
Publications
This article examines how location-based mobile media technologies are affecting the ways individuals experience the relationship between memory and place. We argue that location-based mobile applications that allow people to check in to places or record their routes represent new practices of place-based digital memory. Many individuals are using mobile media to mobilize place and memory together to create new forms of digital network memory from which they may begin to remember their pasts and to write their histories—a kind of rhetorical and poetic memory making. To help illuminate these practices, we analyze applications such as Foursquare and My Tracks …
Philosopher's Stone: The Faustian Geist Of Development, Salikyu Sangtam
Philosopher's Stone: The Faustian Geist Of Development, Salikyu Sangtam
Dissertations
The present study juxtaposes scientific rationality with polyphonic rationality in respect to societal development. This is done to illuminate how scientific rationality provides a narrow and truncated view of development. In order to explicate the exclusion of polyphonic rationalities/knowledges in favor of scientific rationality, several development scholarships are examined along with an episode of developmental scheme and two episodes of development programs. This is done to expound (note: ‘→’ = influences) how scientific rationality → scholarships → organizational/institutional schemes, such as the MDGs → actual applications of development schemes, such as transmigration and compulsory villagization. The present inquest, …

From The Plantation Zone: The Poetics Of A Black Matrilineal Genealogy For The Americas, Eileen S. Chanza Torres
From The Plantation Zone: The Poetics Of A Black Matrilineal Genealogy For The Americas, Eileen S. Chanza Torres
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
In the Humanities, studies on the legacy of enslaved Black women are often split along ethnic, cultural, linguistic and national lines. My dissertation brings together literatures and visual arts from Puerto Rico, Martinique, Suriname, the Dominican Republic and the U.S. representing a myriad of linguistic and cultural traditions that turn to the legacy of the historical Black female body as their myth of creation. I position these works under the heading of Plantation Zone Literatures and Visual Arts, a term I use to indicate the centrality of Black women's genealogy in 20th-century and 21st-century works from the Black Diaspora. Once …
A Pfennig Saved: The Complexity Behind The Self-Perceived Saving Behavior Of German Speakers, Shane Sloan
A Pfennig Saved: The Complexity Behind The Self-Perceived Saving Behavior Of German Speakers, Shane Sloan
2015 Fall Honors Capstone Projects - Archive
This study examined German savings behavior in the light of the recent European Union financial crises and Chen (2013), whose research linked language structure, cultural frameworks, and economic behavior. A specially-designed survey explored the savings behavior of southern Germans during the summer of 2013, augmented in 2015 with a data mining analysis of German social media platforms on the same topic. The results indicated a complex set of reasons for the savings behaviors of Germans, which also aligned broadly with the outcomes reported by Hofstede and provided a more comprehensive picture than Chen's theory.
Women, Higher Education, And The Labor Market: A Cross-Cultural Understanding Of The Impact Of Religion, Allison Fife Hale
Women, Higher Education, And The Labor Market: A Cross-Cultural Understanding Of The Impact Of Religion, Allison Fife Hale
Undergraduate Honors Capstone Projects
How do deeply-held cultural perspectives shape the desire and ability of women to pursue higher education and or careers? More specifically, how do predominant religious and cultural perspectives on the family, the role of women, and the role of education influence a woman's decision to obtain higher education and her perceived ability or desire to seek full-time employment upon graduation? To answer these questions, this research utilized a cross-cultural survey instrument to compare and contrast the perceptions of female, undergraduate students in one predominantly Muslim/Middle Eastern society -- Dubai, U.A.E -- and one predominantly Mormon/Western society -- Utah, U.S.A. We …

“Charleston, Goddam”: An Editorial Introduction To Act 14.2, Brent C. Talbot
Sunderman Conservatory of Music Faculty Publications
In this editorial, I trace the events following the tragic and racist shootings that occurred at the A.M.E. church in Charleston, South Carolina on June 17, 2015. Drawing upon anti-racist scholars and musical activists, I make a case for getting political and for cultivating activism in our classrooms. I ask our field to critically reflect upon our participation in a system that advantages Whites. I suggest that one possibility to engage in dialogue around issues of race is to encourage an environment of musical creativity where—together with students—teachers study and write music that speaks to our times and addresses issues …

Alaska Native-Focused Teacher Preparation Programs: What Have We Learned?, Bernice Ttepon, Diane Hirshberg, Audrey Leary, Alexandra Hill
ISER Articles
There are too few indigenous teachers in Alaska, as fewer than 5% of Alaskas certified teachers are Alaska Native. However, Alaskas Indigenous students make up 80% of student enrollment in the states rural schools, and over 22% of the school population statewide. Moreover, 74 % of teachers hired by Alaskas public schools come from outside the state. Teachers new to rural Alaska typically remain on the job just one or two years, and high turnover rates in Alaska are strongly correlated with poorer student learning outcomes (Hill & Hirshberg, 2013). Many community and education leaders believe rural schools could benefit …

A Greener Dominican?: The Journey Of A University Perched On The Threshold Of Sustainability, Lauren Guittard
Senior Theses
We live in a culture in which we find ourselves disconnected with the natural world and yet suffering from the mounting implications of the impact that our actions as developing industry-based societies have had on the ecological systems of the planet. Institutions of Higher Education, such as colleges and universities, educate most of the people who develop and manage institutions in society. As centers for learning and the dissemination of knowledge, institutions of higher learning have an obligation to promote a culture of sustainability within their communities. This paper that explores concepts of sustainability in relation to higher education with particular …
“The Great Speckled Bird”- Early Country Music And The Popularization Of Non-Secular Song, Kris R. Truelsen
“The Great Speckled Bird”- Early Country Music And The Popularization Of Non-Secular Song, Kris R. Truelsen
Electronic Theses and Dissertations
Perhaps no melody in the country music canon has been as widely recognized and borrowed from as that of the song “The Great Speckled Bird.” This significant song has become resonant and representative of both country music culture and religious culture of the Protestant South.
Through this historiographical study, I have traced the influences that helped shape “The Great Speckled Bird” and in so doing have illustrated distinct movements that led to popularizing the non-secular song through commercial country music. The composer’s use of sentimentality, neo- traditionalism, and religious ideas made it appealing to a rural southern culture struggling with …
Design Research: Typography Within The Israeli Linguistic Landscape, Shayna Tova Blum
Design Research: Typography Within The Israeli Linguistic Landscape, Shayna Tova Blum
Faculty and Staff Publications
A linguistic landscape signifies language used within a physical or virtual public space, in which communication is presented in typographic form, portraying a message to an audience. Within the state of Israel, the linguistic landscape presents a unique situation in which it is common to view municipal and commercial multilingual signs that are designed using Hebrew, English, and Arabic letterforms. By studying the diverse linguistic landscape within Israeli urban environments, the article offers perspectives on the use of multilingual visual language, based on discussions with five Israeli designers in the summer of 2015.
Defining The 99%: A Rhetorical Critique Of The Occupy Wall Street Movement, Molly Forgey
Defining The 99%: A Rhetorical Critique Of The Occupy Wall Street Movement, Molly Forgey
UNLV Theses, Dissertations, Professional Papers, and Capstones
Social actors assume a large task when attempting to legitimize their movement and motivate participation. For Occupy Wall Street (OWS) dissidents this task was even greater given that their grievances lie both with government and with large corporations, two of the most influential entities in the United States. Such obstacles sparked an interest in studying the language strategies OWS rhetors employed when attempting to define the movement. This thesis examines these strategies in order to discover how the movement was framed, and how framing processes relate to the collective’s identity. The discourse analyzed includes the initial call to action published …

Romanticism And Reality On The Gc: Transnational Māori On The Gold Coast, Sarina Pearson
Pacific Studies
This essay examines the controversy surrounding The GC, a New Zealand reality television series that follows young Māori living on Australia’s Gold Coast, and the cultural debates it sparked about Māori identity, representation, and modernity. By analyzing the show’s reception and its challenge to dominant visual and cultural narratives, the essay explores how primitivism continues to shape public discourse and how Māori media productions can disrupt and redefine the boundaries of indigenous representation.

An Ethnography Of Taste: Craft Beer Culture In Hattiesburg, Yingkun Hou
Master's Theses
This thesis studies the craft beer culture in Hattiesburg in order to answer the research question: Is taste what draws people to this culture? Beyond conducting classic participant-observation, I deployed the method of sensory activated participant-observation in my fieldwork. In so doing, this research centers the perspective and the data collected on the senses, especially the taste of craft beer. The purpose of this research is to add to our knowledge of the anthropology of the senses and contribute to the literature on the anthropology of taste.

Chemical and Biochemical Engineering Faculty Research & Creative Works
Silver (Ag) coated bioactive glass particles (Ag-BG) were formulated and compared to uncoated controls (BG) in relation to glass characterization, solubility and microbiology. X-ray diffraction (XRD) confirmed a crystalline AgNP surface coating while ion release studies determined low Ag release (/L). Cell culture studies presented increased cell viability (127 and 102%) with lower liquid extract (50 and 100 ml/ml) concentrations. Antibacterial testing of Ag-BG in E. coli, S. epidermidis and S. aureus significantly reduced bacterial cell viability by 60-90%. Composites of Ag-BG/CMC-Dex Hydrogels were formulated and characterized. Agar diffusion testing was conducted where Ag-BG/hydrogel composites produced the largest inhibition zones …

Believing In "Inner Truth": The Protocols Of The Elders Of Zion In Nazi Propaganda, 1933-1945, Randall L. Bytwerk
University Faculty Publications and Creative Works
Although most leading Nazis realized that The Protocols of the Elders of Zion was a spurious document, they found it useful in promoting belief in the international Jewish conspiracy of which they were already convinced. Authorship and other details were irrelevant, they averred, if the book expressed "inner truth."
Disrupting The City: Using Urban Screens To Remediate Public Space, Jean Dubois, Dave Colangelo, Claude Fortin
Disrupting The City: Using Urban Screens To Remediate Public Space, Jean Dubois, Dave Colangelo, Claude Fortin
School of Film Faculty Publications and Presentations
For over a decade, human-computer interaction (HCI) research placed a great deal of emphasis on studying interaction, engagement, and appropriative practices in online technology-mediated social environments. Moving forward, however, we see computing systems increasingly designed to support digitally-augmented face-to-face interactions in public settings. As far back as the nineteen seventies, new media artists anticipated this interactive potential of digital public displays to foster new forms of situated interactions in urban space, quite distinct from mobile computing in that they altogether exclude online connections or exchanges. Drawing on examples of practice, this paper discusses and show-cases some of the key creative …
Language Policy In Turkey And Its Effect On The Kurdish Language, Sevda Arslan
Language Policy In Turkey And Its Effect On The Kurdish Language, Sevda Arslan
Masters Theses
For many decades the Kurdish language was ignored and banned from public use and Turkish became the lingua franca for all citizens to speak. This way, the Turkish state sought to create a nation-state based on one language and attempted to eliminate the use of other languages, particularly Kurdish, through severe regulations and prohibitions.
Firstly, this thesis traces the language planning policies in the 20th century which resulted in the invisibilization and denial of Kurdish through an attempted linguicide. Through decade long oppressions which resulted in mass killings, arrests, re-location of Kurds, monopolization of education in Turkish and eventually the …

Background: The Afghan community is a priority population for many health and social services within the southeast region of Melbourne, which is home to the largest population of Afghanistan-born people within the state of Victoria. The majority of Afghan women arriving in Australia are of childbearing age, and evidence suggests that they are at increased risk of emotional challenges following birth as a result of the refugee and migration experience. This research aimed to explored the experiences of Afghan women living in Melbourne throughout pregnancy, birth, and early motherhood, and gain insight into the aspects of their experiences that they …
Western Duck Sickness: Avian Botulism And Conservation In The Bear River Marsh, 1910-1933, Andrew J. Simek
Western Duck Sickness: Avian Botulism And Conservation In The Bear River Marsh, 1910-1933, Andrew J. Simek
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This thesis investigates how the Bear River marsh’s protection became a national interest and a cause for conservation in the Progressive Era. The thesis documents how the marsh declined because of irrigation development culminating with an outbreak of avian botulism in 1910, and traces the long process to protect the marshland. The research focused on examining local water development patterns of the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, ornithological research in the 1910s, and the national sportsmen’s conservation movement of the 1920s. Upon examination of these events, it becomes clear that a coalition of ornithologists, sportsmen, and policy makers worked together …

Qualitative Case Study On Cell Phone Appropriation For Language Learning Purposes In A Dominican Context, Gisela Martiz
All Graduate Theses and Dissertations, Spring 1920 to Summer 2023
This research study investigated how a Dominican English language teacher and her students appropriated cell phone features for educational purposes inside and outside the classroom. The dissertation used a qualitative approach that focused on the teacher, and four students selected from a class of 23. Data collection took place for 8 weeks in an English language center located at a public university in the Dominican Republic in the summer of 2014. I collected data through interviews, conversations, classroom observations, and questionnaires. Data were analyzed to identify emerging themes that described how the teacher and students used their cell phones for …

Bildung Culture: Elite Popular Music And The American University, 1960-2010, David Blake
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
Milton Babbitt's 1958 article " The Composer as Specialist" (in)famously aligned the scientific aspirations of avant-garde art music with the university's mission of disinterested research. More recently, musicologists have criticized the alleged resultant hermitage of modernist styles within academia by asserting universities' separation from " public" musical culture. However, the growth of the American university in terms of population and social power since the mid-twentieth century has enlarged rather than mitigated the institution's societal influence. While universities have traditionally been associated with art music rather than popular music scenes, changes in demography, curricula, and student life over the past half-century …
Signal Disruptions: Gendered Tropes And The Feminist Burlesque Of Martha Rosler, Jennifer Mary Kruglinski
Signal Disruptions: Gendered Tropes And The Feminist Burlesque Of Martha Rosler, Jennifer Mary Kruglinski
Stony Brook Theses and Dissertations Collection, 2006-2020 (closed to submissions)
My dissertation reveals the role of burlesque and humor in the feminist art of Martha Rosler. Rosler is acknowledged as a key figure in the feminist art movement, as well as a pioneer in video art, yet the fact that humor was integral to what I call her " feminist burlesque" --Rosler's parodic interpretation and re-presentation of the gendered imagery portrayed by the mass media--has been largely ignored in the literature surrounding her work. As such, this dissertation analyzes Rosler's feminist artwork from the 1970s that directly appropriated tropes of gender from the mass media and popular imagination in relation …
